Simply the

best.

Y

es, being the best is hard work. Getting to the top of your field or industry takes determination, tenacity, sacrifice, and more—but when you really break it down, success is simple. Once you set your sights on achieving your goal, on bringing your dream to life, the complications fade away. There’s no waffling, no hemming and hawing. You simply work until you make it. And then you keep working. Don’t get us wrong—simple doesn’t mean easy. It means focus, clarity, and purity of purpose. It means paring down the distractions until the only thing on your plate is the only thing that matters. We at the Sun wanted to reflect that elemental ideal with this year’s Best Of. It’s classy, it’s clean, and it’s uncomplicated—like you, our winners and readers. To that end, we won’t waste any words in our introduction to this issue: Find fine food and drink in Wine, Dine, and Devour [6]. Get a dose of culture with Arts and Entertainment [28]. Shop till you drop with Burnin’ Cash [32]. Treat your body right in Feelin’ Good [47]. Keep an eye on the area with Community On My Mind [54]. And celebrate romance and life with our newest section, For Love and Money [58]. To all who made this Best Of a joy to put together, thank you. Congratulations to our winners, and a tip of our impeccable hat to the readers, voters, ballot counters, designers, photographer—especially the visual coordinators!—writers, salespeople, publishers, and more who made this edition possible. We’re simply thrilled.

One word, people: bacon. kay’s Country kitchen has done much to earn the distinction of “Best Breakfast” for many years now, but the thing that brings the loyalists back is the bacon. thick-cut, smoked bacon is the key. and pair that with a fluffy, buttery biscuit? Breakfast is done! Of course, kay’s also has a full array of lunchtime sandwiches and salads, all made with fresh delicious ingredients, but try going to this old-timey breakfast joint without ordering the “too-Much-to-Drink-last-Night Omelet.” Filled with some of the best items on the menu—including their juicy chicken-fried steak—the stickto-your-ribs item can cure any hangover, or it ain’t kay’s. —Joe Payne

a white wine can be a sterling example of the perfect geography and climate of a region. Cambria Winery, which tied for first place for Best Local White Wine, rests on the sloping hills of inland Santa Maria Valley, where the precious grapes slowly but surely plump on the vine. Cambria is especially known for its distinct chardonnays, relying on clonal diversity to help ensure the wine’s complexity. The chardonnays run a range from light and fruity, to a rich and buttery nectar. Cambria ages much of its white wine first in stainless steel and then finishes it in sweet oak barrels. This ensures that the flavor isn’t overpowered by the oak, but is still aged well in the traditional method. —Joe

Classic noir is usually shot in black and white, so it shouldn’t take humphrey Bogart to show that the best coffee in town is at Café noir. But then again, exactly what to order at Café noir is a challenging question, as it will take a professional investigator to find the perfect item on the menu of goodies here. The flavor of a steak comes from the cow it’s been cut out of, the way the beef is aged, and the way that piece of meat is grilled. For Terri Stricklin at the Hitching Post in Casmalia, that steak always comes from small meat packers out of the Midwest. “It’s the best,” Stricklin said. The steaks are so good, the restaurant’s brought in the same Midwest-based supplier’s beef for three decades. As far as cooking it goes, the Hitching Post has done it the Santa Maria way since 1944—by filling up its open-pit barbecue with red oak and letting the flames and the smoke work their magic. —Camillia Lanham

Nick and Caterina agate brought their friendly spirit and family recipes from Italy to Chicago in 1969. after nearly two decades, they relocated to lompoc and have remained ever since, offering memorably delicious and authentic Italian favorites to Central Coast diners. “You won’t be able to eat chicken marsala anywhere else again,” one patron raved on the restaurant’s Facebook page. Customers will be treated as a member of the family at la Botte, and since 1981, it’s remained a comfortable place to dress up or bring all the kids. the lompoc establishment pleases more than the palate with its homemade minestrone and Nick’s own meat sauce. most weekend nights, the line to get a table at Jocko’s Steakhouse is significant and long. according to urban Spoon reviews, the reason it’s worth the wait is the restaurant’s laid-back atmosphere. In addition to the steaks, of which there are many cuts—and they’re gigantic. Jocko’s fires its meat on a Santa maria-style oak-pit barbecue behind the restaurant after rubbing it down with a special rub (which you can also buy). another big reason Jocko’s is so popular is that it’s been around forever, in one form or another. the bar itself has been around since 1886, barbecued meats came in after World War II, and they’ve been feeding folks ever since. —Camillia

Variety is the spice of sushi rolls at yanagi Sushi and Grill. Boasting more than 200 dishes, owner and sushi chef Jay Chung modifies the taste of traditional sushi and throws teppan-yaki style cooking into the mix. a telltale sign of teppan-yaki is the iron griddle used to cook food in front of yanagi’s guests. Chung brings more than 25 years of experience in Japanese-fusion to the Central Coast, and while he doesn’t necessarily man the grill at each of his restaurants, the yanagi website states that he’s constantly scouting for new teppan chefs and trying to reinvent the roll. —Camillia

He said all his electricians have 40 hours or more of training to upgrade their skills each year in order to keep up with changes in the industry. “The other thing is we never sell anybody on something they don’t need. If we can fix something, we fix it.” —Shelly

On those days, maybe you just need to adjust your perspective. And sometimes a good spinal adjustment can tweak your entire perspective for the better. Or you might know him as the co-owner of Parallel Edit, a recently opened clothing store in Santa Maria. Or you could know him from the law firm where his wife’s the attorney. Or maybe it’s the property management and construction he oversees. Sun estimates that his wife and he put in at least a combined 100 hours a week on their various enterprises. Any parent knows that when it comes to childcare, nothing can be left to chance. Locals know that when it comes to their kids, the YMCA is the place they can trust. The YMCA does much to supplement local, in-classroom after-school programs, but it’s what happens at the YMCA itself that really brings the shine. In Santa Maria alone, the safe-and-sane skate park, pool, sports facilities, rec rooms, games, and camp programs give local kids a lot of exposure to fun, interesting activities. “We’re very family oriented here, and everybody here just wants to help out,” said Nadia Frakes, a children’s activities coordinator, “and that’s the whole point of a nonprofit organization: … helping each other.” —Joe

The Boys and Girls Club of Santa Maria has served the community since 1966. There are opportunities that should suit everyone’s liking. Helpful locals can volunteer for the gift shop, hospice, extended-care center, and elsewhere. “A lot of people who come through, like the volunteers, feel good about volunteering,” Padilla said. “It is a great feeling to serve those in need.” —Rebecca

Science has shown us that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. So when someone starts messing with this country’s bedrock ideals, Andy Caldwell gets in motion. “I have a passion to defend the liberty and freedom that makes America great and affords the opportunity for one and all to pursue the American Dream,” he noted. “I believe, like our founding fathers, that our rights come from our Creator, not government, and the only purpose of government is to secure and respect these rights.” Much of his work is through the Coalition of Labor, Agriculture, and Business, but that’s not all that burns within him. “I have been fortunate to emerge as a Central Coast opinion leader, who happens to be the executive director of COLAB,” he told the Sun. “I am afforded the opportunity to speak, write, and opine in the course of the radio shows and op-eds from my personal perspective and that of COLAB, although the organization itself doesn’t take a position on very many political, social, or cultural issues. COLAB’s primary focus is on regulations, taxes, efficient and effective government, and constitutional rights.” —Ryan

After choosing his tux style from one of two catalogs in the store, the customer’s measurements are taken to Martinez’s exacting standards. No amount of corporate swag can beat the skill, quality, and service found at the locally owned Melby’s Jewelers. Current owner Mark Melby is one in a long familial line of jewelers, who learned the art from his father and grandfather before him. “My grandfather started in 1922, and my father started working after he got out of the service in World War II, so this is our 91st year,” he said. “We get a lot of word-of-mouth referrals, our name pops up frequently.” Melby’s name comes up because he makes sure his customers are taken care of.
