BEST SANTA MARIA RESTAURANT

Shaw’s Steakhouse 714 S. Broadway, Santa Maria The best restaurant in Santa Maria had better be a tri-tip staple—in these here parts, them’s the rules. And this year’s votes hit that nail on the head. Shaw’s Steakhouse, which also won for Best Tri-Tip, is taking the cake for the best restaurant in Santa Maria. General Manager Eric Spies said Shaw’s customers get the best possible products, including “top-quality tri-tip” aged nearly a month before it’s cooked. But earning “best restaurant” takes more than just good food—it’s about having the best customer service, too: “We keep working with the staff to spoil the customers,” Spies said. “And they keep coming back.” —Brenna Swanston Runner up: The Swiss Restaurant & Bar

BEST NIPOMO RESTAURANT

Jocko’s Steak House 125 N. Thompson Ave., Nipomo About the only institution in Nipomo older than the

historic Dana Adobe is Jocko’s Steak House, which has served up its traditional and regional ranchers dinner for more than a century now. It’s hard not to think Jocko’s when you think Nipomo. During any given visit, you might be seated next to local farming families, politicians, or people traveling along Highway 101. They all have one thing in common: They know Nipomo means Jocko’s, and Jocko’s means a barbecue dinner that can’t be beat. Hardly changed in decades, from the food to the décor, and totally unpretentious, Jocko’s holds a special place in everyone’s belly, not just Nipomo residents’. —Joe Payne Runner up: Rancho Nipomo Deli & BBQ

BEST ORCUTT RESTAURANT

Trattoria Uliveto

385 Broadway St., Orcutt It doesn’t take many Google searches to learn why Trattoria Uliveto is so well-loved—it’s hands-down the highest-recommended as far as Italian food goes, and as far as I’m concerned, really good Italian restaurants make for really good overall

restaurants. But chef and owner Alfonso Curti accepted voters’ praise humbly: “I don’t think I’m the best. I think I’m one of the best,” he said. The restaurant’s customer service and high-quality food are points of particular pride, and the produce is always fresh and the menu accomodates vegetarians and pescatarians as well as fancy cocktaillovers. —Brenna Swanston Runner up: Jack’s in Old Orcutt

BEST LOMPOC RESTAURANT

La Botte Italian Restaurant

812 North H St., Lompoc From the time Mama Caterina and her husband, Nick, started La Botte 36 years ago, diners have been flocking to the restaurant to indulge in classic Italian dishes, homemade breads and desserts, and, on occasion, Mama’s singing. Nowadays, daughters Marlena and Francesca, along with the grandchildren, work alongside Mama as they continue the family legacy of preparing fresh meals and providing a welcoming, inviting atmosphere. “Dining at La Botte is like coming into

an Italian home,” says Mama Caterina. “We work hard to make sure everyone enjoys their meal and feels welcome here—that’s my policy.” —Meagan Friberg Runner up: Scratch Kitchen

BEST GUADALUPE RESTAURANT

La Simpatia 827 Cabrillo Highway, Guadalupe Although La Simpatia closed its doors a few years ago for seismic retrofitting, the small-town Mexican restaurant has returned with a vengeance, winning diners’ hearts all over again. The beloved Highway 1 pit stop, which first opened in 1944, has attracted visitors from far and wide, whether to enjoy their famous cheesy chile relleno or an ice-cold beer in the bar, coined Pancho’s Hideaway. Owner Rosa Quiroga has kept the restaurant close to what it looked like originally, adding to its popularity; the counter, cash register, and an oldfashioned ice box all greet present-day customers in the way the restaurant did in the ’40s. —Jamie Guista Runner up: Guadalupe Restaurant

BEST LOS ALAMOS RESTAURANT

Full of Life Flatbread

225 Bell St., Los Alamos Everyone loves a good flatbread, and Full of Life Flatbread’s really got it goin’ on in Los Alamos: a diverse rotating menu with unique starters, rich entrees, and exotic desserts; an extensive event calendar boasting tons of private parties; and fresh, locally grown, organic ingredients to boot. At the Sun, Full of Life Flatbread is no newbie to the winners’ circle. “Full of Life Flatbread is honored to have won the Sun’s readers’ poll again,” Chef Clark Staub said. “Los Alamos is an awesome place for a brief getaway, and we are proud of the role we have played in its development.” —Brenna Swanston Runner up: Charlie’s

BEST LOS OLIVOS RESTAURANT

Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Cafe 2879 Grand Ave., Los Olivos Great food and an impressive and extensive

wine selection? Yes, such a place exists, and it’s right in downtown Los Olivos at Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café. “We are honored to be voted as your Best Los Olivos Restaurant,” owner Shawnda Marmorstein said. “We offer an award-winning wine list with a focus on our local California Central Coast wines, along with farm fresh produce [much of which is grown from our own Cafe Farm] and a delicious menu, with something for everyone.” —Shelly Cone Runner up: Sides Hardware & Shoes A Brother’s Restaurant

BEST BUELLTON RESTAURANT

BEST SOLVANG RESTAURANT

Paula’s Pancake House

1531 Mission Drive, Solvang While in Solvang, you do what the locals—or, rather, the Danish—do. Indulging in the sweet fare is just one of the many perks of the unique city, and Paula’s Pancake House appropriately captures its Danish feel with thin, powdered-sugar hotcakes served by waitresses wearing traditional blue and white dresses. Aside from the obvious nod to the European culture, the success of Paula’s Pancake House can be attributed to the commitment to exceptional food quality and genuine down-home

hospitality, explained owner Paula Greenwald. “Everything is prepared in house using only the freshest and local ingredients,” she said. “Paula’s has become an institution in the world of breakfast restaurants. When people think Solvang, people think Paula’s.” —Jamie Guista Runner up: TIE Root 246 and Solvang Brewing Company

BEST SANTA YNEZ RESTAURANT

S.Y. Kitchen

110 Faraday St., Santa Ynez A partnership between Mike and Kathie Gordon and Chef Luca Crestanelli, S.Y. Kitchen has become a favorite of locals and visitors alike since opening in 2013. Enjoy a “decidedly different Italian dining experience” courtesy of Chef Luca and his brother, Chef Francesco, along with their friendly and welcoming team that serves up fresh, authentic, unique, and simply scrumptious dishes daily. “We buy the best ingredients; we don’t take shortcuts, and our specials are always our staff favorites,” Chef Luca said. Visit the Italian-inspired farmhouse, featuring indoor and outdoor seating, for the

perfect group gathering or a romantic dinner for two. —Meagan Friberg Runner up: Brothers Restaurant at the Red Barn

BEST OVERALL RESTAURANT

The Hitching Post

3325 Point Sal Road, Casmalia Since Casmalia is often described as a former cattletown of the Old West, it’s not a surprise that its renowned restaurant has been named the best overall yet again. But the Santa Barbara County Historical Landmark, which was originally the Casmalia Hotel in the early 1900s, has a secret to its success—owners Bill and Frank Ostini closely follow the barbecue method mastered in the Western days by using an indoor pit with red oak wood from a scrub oak tree along with the finest beef, aged to perfection. As the Ostini family attests, the eatery focuses on giving patrons an enjoyable evening filled with some classic Old West hospitality. —Jamie Guista Runner up: Jack’s In Old Orcutt

BEST NEW RESTAURANT OF 2015

Jaffa CafE 2530 S. Broadway, Santa Maria One new restaurant in Northern Santa Barbara County got a lot of attention when it opened up, like a Bengal tiger jumping through a fire hoop level of attention. Jaffa Café has attracted crowds ever since it opened in 2015, serving up fresh and authentic Mediterranean food. “What makes our restaurant very unique is the recipes, it’s very authentic,” owner Ali Saleh said. “Most of the recipes we had are my mom’s recipes, like the hummus, the tabouli, the rice, and the falafel.” The food is always fresh, Saleh said, because he gets ingredients delivered daily, sometimes even twice a day. —Joe Payne Runner up: TIE Niya and Scratch Kitchen & Wine Bar

Try the tacos al pastor, tacos de lengua, and the Cali fries. —Ariel Waterman Runner up: Cubanissimo

BEST BREAKFAST

Kay’s Country Kitchen 135 E. Clark Ave., Orcutt The quality blend of homecooked food, fresh produce, and a warm, inviting atmosphere are three of the reasons Kay Tims, owner of Kay’s Country Kitchen, believes the restaurant was voted Best Breakfast for the 16th consecutive year. Since opening in 2000, the hot spot has been cooking up local favorites such as the Hangover Omelet and the Old Town Orcutt Burger. Tims, a born-andraised Orcutt resident who was a server before taking

ownership, said she is always honored by the recognition. “What an accomplishment for this restaurant and for all the people that have supported it through the years,” she said. —Jamie Guista Runner up: Jack’s in Old Orcutt

BEST BAKERY

Gina’s Piece of Cake

307 Town Center East, Santa Maria Gina’s Piece of Cake opened 12 years ago and was originally located at Town Center West in Santa Maria. A little more than six years ago, Martin was offered a sweet spot in the mall where you can now fulfill just about any of your pastry fantasies. Whether it’s cake pops or strawberry shortcake, Gina’s probably has it. What makes Gina’s so successful? “It’s not just one thing,” Martin said. But if she were to pinpoint some of those ingredients for success, it’s consistency and quality of product, hard-working staff, and—of course—the customers. —David Minsky Runner up: Jovi’s Delights

The Jetty Restaurant

135 E. Foster Road, Santa Maria Where do hungry Sun readers go when they want delicious seafood? The Jetty Restaurant of course! What else sets The Jetty apart from the rest? “It’s our food quality and service. Those are the most important things for us,” Stice said. And with a nautical décor and old-timey fishing photos on the wall, The Jetty offers a fun atmosphere. Fantastic atmosphere, yummy pizza, and you get to throw the peanut shells on the floor. Eclectic décor and the cozy Alaskan atmosphere add to the appeal. Irvin Kiger, who owns Klondike along with his wife, June, said part of the appeal is that Klondike has been in the city for more than 20 years. “We really stress the quality of our product, the freshness of our product, and the consistency of

our product,” Irvin said. And with events like the Tuesday Chowdown, where you get all you can eat of more than 25 varieties of pizza, it’s no wonder it was named Best Pizza by Sun readers. —Shelly Cone Runner up: Patricio’s Pizzeria

Jocko’s Steak House in Nipomo takes steak very seriously. Every cut of beef served there has been aged for days. You can actually buy uncooked steaks to take home too, a total game changer. BEST TRI-TIP SANDWICH

Shaw’s Steakhouse 714 S. Broadway, Santa Maria When it comes to tri-tip, Santa Maria (where the specific cut of beef originates) style is the best. So, narrowing the best tri-tip sandwich down to one local eatery can be a challenging task. Shaw’s Steakhouse, however, proves time and time again that it’s the deserving winner. With a special blend of house seasonings and mild salsa, the sandwich has been made the same for years. “We buy the best products we possibly can, and we try to be consistent every day,” General Manager Eric Spies said. “We buy topquality tri-tip. We never skimp on that, and we make sure it’s aged 25 to 30 days before we start cooking it.” —Jamie Guista Runner up: Jack’s in Old Orcutt

BEST SALSA

Burrito Loco 4869 S. Bradley Road, No. 101, Orcutt When judging the excellence of Mexican

restaurants, many will note, “It’s in the salsa.” For regular patrons of Burrito Loco, they have known it was in their salsa all along. The restaurant—which was also awarded the title of best salsa in 2011, 2013, and 2015—is made in both hot and mild, blended with a delightful mixture of chiles and tomatoes. Each order comes with a complimentary side of chips and salsa, while traditional Mexican dishes like burritos, quesadillas, tamales, enchiladas and more also fill the menu. —Jamie Guista Runner up: Le Mejor de Jallisco

Broadway, Santa Maria You’ll go crazy for the burritos at Burrito Loco! Located in the Acorn Shopping Center, this place has been rolling burritos right for years. Chef Blanca Zamora said the most popular burrito is the ranchero, a fresh tortilla stuffed with pork chile verde, rice, boiled beans, topped with more chile

verde sauce, cheese, onions, cilantro, guacamole, and sour cream. “I hope readers will get hungry and come here,” Zamora laughed. El Herradero has been enticing taste buds since 2001. Owner Selina Medina said her most popular burrito is the breakfast burrito made with a homemade tortilla packed with ham, bacon, eggs, rice, beans, jalapeños, and fried potatoes. “We are so thrilled readers love our burritos,” Medina said. “It’s just wonderful, and we appreciate the people voting for us.” La Unica has been a Santa Maria fixture for 25 years, and Mario Chavez has been managing the place for 24 of those years. “We make everything fresh and work to get it just right,” Chavez said. Their award-winning burritos are proof that they do. “Our California burrito is most popular,” he said. Filled with carne asada, french fries, cheese, guacamole, and sour cream in a fresh tortilla, it rocks! Vaqueras’ carne asada burrito is enormous, moist, and packs a power cowpunch of flavor! Generously packed with meat, the Cali burrito is a massive, sinful bundle of deliciousness,

Besides burgers, the Natural Café also serves veggie sandwiches, pizza, pasta, and more. —Jamie Guista Runner up: Moxie Café

Jack’s in Old Orcutt

156 Broadway St., Orcutt Jack’s in Old Orcutt has been through a series of changes over the past year. In June of 2015, Chris and Terri Salazar, a local couple with extensive experience with various restaurants throughout the coast, took ownership. While the pair kept many of the old customer favorites on the menu, including the famously large portion sizes and all-day breakfast, lunch, and dinner, they added a beloved new component—Santa Maria-style barbecue. Since then the restaurant, which has attracted many new regular customers based on the additions, has had lines out the door. —Jamie Guista Runner up: Maya Mexican Restaurant

The Hitching Post

3325 Point Sal Road, Casmalia In 1957, the Hitching Post had no menus and only one meal was available—an 18-ounce steak with french fries, shrimp cocktail or tomato juice, tossed green salad, a beverage, and ice cream for dessert. The dinner cost a mere $3.75. While inflation has made it impossible to get the same deal today, the meal, which is virtually the same, is well worth the extra change. Mouth-watering ribs, chicken, quail, lamb, and seafood were added, creating an enviable menu and securing it as the best place to impress. —Jamie Guista Runner up: The Garden Room at the Santa Maria Inn

2059 S. Broadway, Santa Maria What kid, or adult for that matter, would not love eating their food and throwing the remains on the floor afterward? Klondike Pizza satisfies this primitive desire, giving customers complimentary peanuts with every purchase and letting them toss the shells on the floor once they are finished. Owners Irvin and June Kiger take pride in providing a fun and quality atmosphere. Irvin said they stress good customer service to their staff and take their Best Of nominations seriously. “We don’t take these things for granted. We’re really thrilled,” Irvin said. The restaurant, which has an Alaska-themed setting, also boasts arcade and board games and a self-playing piano. But do not forget about the pizza. The menu features local favorites like Roadkill pizza, which is topped with reindeer and Italian sausage, pepperoni, salami, and Canadian-style bacon. —Jamie Guista Runner up: Straw Hat Pizza

BEST GROCERY STORE

Spencer’s Fresh Market

3580 Orcutt Road, Orcutt When you do not want the crowds of a supermarket but still crave the selection, Spencer’s Fresh Market is your best bet. The store also has an “indoor farmers’ market” featuring produce from many area growers, bakery products, and meat from Harris Ranch—the state’s largest beef producer. Several unique specials are also a given, including homemade salsa and sausages. Aside from the products, customers say the best thing about Spencer’s is you are greeted with a smile, no matter how much you buy. —Jamie Guista Runner up: Trader Joe’s

BEST WINERY FOR RED WINE

Riverbench Vineyard & Winery 6020 Foxen Canyon Road, Santa Maria One of the fantastic things about living on the Central Coast is the abundance of terrific wine. For red wine lovers there is one winery that stands out among the rest: Riverbench Vineyard & Winery. According to Wil Fernandez, communications director for Riverbench Vineyard & Winery, the winery focuses on the three primary grapes of Champagne—chardonnay, pinot meunier, and pinot noir—so people with a taste for Burgundian red and white wines naturally

gravitate toward Riverbench’s style, too. “We’re extremely proud to be producing some of the best wines in the country from our small vineyard right here in the Santa Maria Valley,” Fernandez said. —Shelly Cone Runner up: Margerum Wine Company

BEST WINERY FOR WHITE WINE

Cambria Winery 5475 Chardonnay Lane, Santa Maria Why did readers choose Cambria Winery as the best place for white wine this year? It might have something to do with winemaker Denise Shurtleff’s expert knowledge of wine grapes.

The Santa Maria Valley is already known for growing some of the finest chardonnay grapes on the Central Coast, but Cambria Winery uses other white grape varieties such as viognier, coming from the Rhone region of France, and pinot gris, which comes from the Burgundy region. All wine at Cambria is estate bottled, meaning the wine comes from grapes grown at the winery. In addition to the grapes, Shurtleff credits Cambria’s long-tenured and knowledgeable staff for creating a fantastic tasting experience that’s made Cambria a top destination for oenophiles. —David Minsky Runner up: Presqui’ile Winery

BEST WINERY FOR SPARKLING WINE

Riverbench Vineyard & Winery

6020 Foxen Canyon Road, Santa Maria There’s nothing more uplifting than a few bubbles. When it comes to capturing them in a glass, no one does it better than Riverbench Vineyard & Winery, at least according to Sun readers. Wil Fernandez, communications director for Riverbench Vineyard & Winery, said that when it comes to the availability of great wines, local wine lovers have so many choices right in their backyards. “I think that they know Riverbench is one of the few vineyards on the Central Coast dedicated to growing our own estate fruit specifically for sparkling wine,” Fernandez said. —Shelly Cone Runner up: Costa de Oro

BEST BREWERY

Figueroa Mountain Brewing Company

560 E. Betteravia Road, Santa Maria People adore the Figueroa Mountain Brewery—obviously in part because of the beer. But according to current Buellton taproom manager David Esdaile, the local aspect of the brewery also has something to do with it. A lot of beers are named after local landmarks (the brewery’s namesake, for one), which locals like. The brewery can’t seem to stay confined to just one location. Opening in 2010, Figueroa Mountain has since built six additional taprooms spanning from Westlake Village to Arroyo Grande. It’s this kind of growth that landed the brewery on Inc. magazine’s list of the top 5,000 fastest-growing companies in 2015. —David Minsky Runner up: Santa Maria Brewing Company

BEST TASTING ROOM

Presqui’le Winery

5391 Presquile Drive, Santa Maria It’s not like North County is exactly lacking in tasting rooms, so when one gets singled out as the best, you know it’s the real deal. Manager Cameron Porter said the key to standing out in the land of many wines is to give your customers’ experience some dimension: “Wine is first and foremost about bringing people together, so from culinary events and vineyard walks to concerts and parties, we provide a dynamic environment for our community to connect,” he said. And it doesn’t hurt to also be the best when it comes to hospitality! —Brenna Swanston Runner up: Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co.

For the last 35 years, Ever-Ready has been providing electricians to fix any electrical problem in your home or business. Notable projects have included the Far Western Tavern in Orcutt and the Central Coast Family Care medical offices in Santa Maria. —Jamie Guista Runner up: Coastal Community Builders

Santa Barbara County Animal Services has worked with animals for almost 20 years. “It’s adventurous. I never know what I’m going to see,” he said. He once chased a loose emu. A wildlife expert told him to put a sock over its head and it will relax. “So I did and it took off running with the sock on its head!” he laughed. “It took six people to catch it!” He focuses on rabies control, enforcement of state and city laws for animal welfare, emergency wildlife response and transport to rescue groups, animal welfare checks, and handling loose or aggressive animals. “We spay and neuter, strive to get animals adopted or reunited, have behaviorists, vets, and trainers,” Clinton said. “I do Facebook outreach to reunite lost animals with owners. We offer Camp Hope for children to learn about pet care and how the shelter operates.” —Ariel Waterman Runner up: Sgt. Sandra Brown, Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department

Instagram: @cubanissimofoodtruck Because a Cubanissimo food truck is mobile, the best way for them to connect with their customers is through social media. “They go hand-in-hand,” said Crystal Trenado, wife of food truck owner Arqui Trenado. And they’ve made solid use of Instagram and Facebook to let their fans know where the truck will be next. Cubanissimo dishes out its authentic Cuban cuisine everywhere from Santa Barbara to Paso Robles. The typical menu includes mainstays like Cuban and media noche sandwiches, ropa vieja, pollo con papas, and Cuban sodas such as Havana Cola and Iron Beer.
