CENTRAL COAST BUSINESS REVIEW 2013

“Eat Pray Love” meets “Sew Cook Talk” Ellen Hudachek had a dream. She wanted to create a warm and welcoming place where people who like to sew and cook could come together to share their stories, skills, tricks, and recipes and just generally enjoy being together—in short, a gathering place. In his book, The Great Good Place, sociologist Ray Oldenburg laments the increasing scarcity of social gathering places, displaced by today’s fast-service, high-volume business “success” model. Believing that the “third place” (the first two being our homes and offices) is essential to happier healthier communities, he stresses the need for more third places—places where people can meet, makes friends, discuss issues, and exchange information. Welcome to The Sewing Café, one of the county’s most complete sewing and quilting stores, and the realization of Ellen’s dream. Opened in Pismo Beach in April of this year, The Sewing Café has actually been in business for more than 40 years, with its first and still thriving location in Santa Maria. But loyal customers who used to drive all the way from Paso Robles and Atascadero to find just the right thread, machine, and fabric for their latest project kept asking for a closer store, so Ellen decided it was time. The Sewing Café carries the full line of machines—Baby Lock, Husqvarna Viking, Pfaff,

Bernina, and Singer, and when you purchase a machine, you get a lifetime of excellent machine mastery classes offered once every few weeks. For novices and experts alike, these classes are heaven-sent for craftsmen of all sorts. Men? Yes, says Ellen, more and more men are showing up to purchase machines and learn to sew. “Men make excellent quilters,” she says, “because they see angles and patterns so differently!” Customers range in age from 8 to 98 and come in both genders and from every walk of life. That’s what makes the “café” part so successful. Now people

with like interests can gather to cook, to sew, and to celebrate being together. Now there’s something new to do when friends want to get together, something besides the usual dinner and a movie. Cook, you say? Yes! People kept asking for cooking classes too, so Ellen had a world-class kitchen installed in the store and engaged renowned retired chef Gary Hamel to teach classes. The cooking school is by membership; buy four classes and get one free. Groups of almost any size can reserve the kitchen or other part of the store for cooking or sewing or both. This month, 18 members of the Santa Maria Home Sewing Guild had their annual potluck at The Sewing Café. Located at 541 Five Cities Drive next to California Fresh Market in the Pismo Coast Shopping Center, The Sewing Café is a bustling but friendly place, and Ellen Hudachek couldn’t be happier. After four decades in the sewing business, she is the expert’s expert, gladly doling out advice, tips, and guidance to a legion of loyal customers. And now she is also host to her dream-cometrue gathering place. Enthusiasm is high for this new “Great Good Gathering Place” where you can meet, make new friends, discuss, exchange, and enjoy … all with not one text, nor one tweet, no smart phones, no i-pads, and no computers. Just real, friendly, interesting people, like the ones you see at your favorite coffee shop.

Twelve Locations. One Family Legacy. When George M. Murphy became a real estate agent almost forty years ago, never did he imagine that his passion for helping buyers and sellers would turn into his own franchise with Coldwell Banker, let alone twelve highly successful branches spanning California’s Central Coast and Central Valley. Today, with his son and Vice President, Shay Murphy, Coldwell Banker Premier Real Estate has become one of the most distinguished sources for buying and selling property in California. Built from one of the largest and most recognizable brands in real estate, Coldwell Banker Premier Real Estate operates from an unwavering foundation of integrity, in that they always strive to do right by their clients. Their number one priority is providing exceptional customer service while fi nding innovative solutions for buyers and sellers alike. Their hope is that each client with which they interact is considered more family, than a number on their sales board. This mantra of integrity is one that George M. Murphy has echoed since his first days in real estate – and even before he sold his first home. Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Mr. Murphy joined the U.S. Army in 1965 and served in Vietnam as an

Artillery First Lieutenant, where he was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor. His son, Shay Murphy, also followed in his footsteps in serving in the U.S. Army and later as a Green Beret. Since completing their military service, both gentlemen have dedicated their careers to carrying on the legacy that Mr. Murphy began. Following his military service, George M. Murphy attended Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma and then officially began his career into real estate in 1973. Just eight years into his bustling career, Mr. Murphy was named Realtor of the Year for Lawton, Oklahoma Board of Realtors. Shortly after, he purchased his own company and became affiliated with the Coldwell Banker brand. In June of 1989, he moved to Fresno, where he held the Vice President position for Coldwell Banker Dan Blough & Associates and received yet another Realtor of the Year award, this time from the Fresno Association of Realtors. In June of 2006, the company launched under its new name, Coldwell Banker Premier Real Estate – with Mr. Murphy as the sole owner. Since then, Mr. Murphy has served as the President of the Fresno Association of Realtors and has chaired several committees at the state

Laurus College has once again been affirmed in their accreditation status by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS). During a recent visit ACICS, a national accreditation body recognized by both the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education, conducted an extensive review of Laurus College’s programs, teaching methods and operational capabilities. Redmond, Chief Executive Officer at Laurus College. “The most important outcome however for Laurus College continues to be the day-to-day appreciation we receive from our students. Santa Maria Valley Native Plant Garden to Surround the Natural History Museum The dream of a Native Plant Garden surrounding the Natural History Museum first came to light in 2003 when Isabelle Green, a nationally renowned landscape architect, spoke at a Museum Speaker’s event. She designed the initial plans that would serve as the catalyst for the future Native Garden Project. In 2011 the Museum’s Penny Drive raised $10,000 to initiate the project. With the enthusiastic backing of the Community, the Board and Volunteers, the dream of the Native Garden was on its way to becoming a reality! The Native Garden Committee has been hard at work planning, researching and fundraising for the Garden based on Isabelle Green’s original vision to create an attractive, inviting environment where students and the greater community will become engaged in the native plant history of the Santa Maria Valley. The garden will demonstrate historic uses of plants focused on the time of the late 1700’s and will encourage water conservation and sustainable practices. The garden will become an extension of the Museum experience and will also provide a gathering place for community events.

If you would like to be a part of this important project or you would like to learn more about sponsoring an area of the Native Garden, please contact: Georgia Schrager at 805-937-0388 - georgia.schrager@gmail.com or Tahir Masood at 805-266-0955 - tahir57@gmail.com

Donna Randolph Knows Your Name! “A person who always puts your needs ahead of their own is a good person to have on your side,” says Donna Randolph, owner of Santa Maria’s State Farm Insurance agency on 1650 South Broadway, (next to CASA MANANA). With more than 20 years’ experience with the State Farm company specifically, Donna knows her products and her customers well. She was only 16 years old when she met the man who would become her State Farm mentor for life. An 8-week “job experience” class in high school introduced her to State Farm agent Muril Clift, who inspired her to pursue and achieve the dream of one day owning a State Farm agency in her home town. Six years ago, Donna opened her own State Farm agency and eventually bought the little house that would become exactly the kind of “good neighbor” office she’d always wanted. The white stucco house next to Casa Manana restaurant in the heart of Santa Maria has been recognized at the highest level by the corporate office for its uniquely friendly ambience, its caring and efficient team, and the full range of insurance services—from home and auto to renters, business, and life. One of Donna Randolph’s commercials uses the theme song from Cheers, “Everybody Knows Your Name.” And that’s just what her clients have come to expect. Donna isn’t just an insurance

agent; she’s been active in the city all her life. Today, she serves as the incoming Chairman of the Board for the Santa Maria Chamber of Commerce, as President of the Santa Maria Women’s Network, has been active in Relay for Life, the YMCA, and at Pioneer High School where her daughters went to school. It’s all about building relationships, she says. And as agent in her community, Donna Randolph doesn’t just say it, she lives it. “I really am your hometown girl,” she smiles. When she first opened her doors, referrals made up only 3% of her business. Today word-of-mouth referrals make up a full 30%! So whether you walk in, call in, or click in to Donna Randolph’s State Farm agency, she’ll make you feel like you are the most important client she has. You’ll feel like family; you’ll feel like you’ve just met someone who will put your needs ahead of their own—a good person to have on your side. Drop by 1650 S. A practice older than its patients … Pediatric Medical Group of Santa Maria celebrates 50 years of service! Five decades ago, the world was a very different place. Gas cost 19 cents a gallon, bread was 22 cents a loaf, and you could get into the movies for a quarter. Cell phones and computers were fantasies from the future, childhood obesity was a non-issue, and polio was prevented by a vaccine taken in a simple lump of sugar. Oh yes, and house calls were a thing of the present! It was into this world, in 1963, that Dr. Roger Ikola opened the doors to Pediatric Medical Group of Santa Maria. Seven years later, he was joined by Dr. George Robertson, and together they built one of the largest and bestrespected pediatric practices on the Central Coast. In 1990, Dr. Ikola’s son, Dr. David Ikola, became the second generation to join the practice; recently added in the last 10 years Dr. Joseph Nunez and Dr. Shane Rostermundt to the fold. Part-time physicians Dr. Abram, Dr. Kayumi, and Dr. Kielty round out the impressive roster of doctors on staff. In the new millennium, the practice has changed and grown, embracing the wonders that leading edge technology make possible, and fostering a culture of care that blends the personalized service of the ‘60s with the miraculous advances of modern medicine. Seven physicians and 40 staff ensure that every patient gets superior care in a practice whose members treat children as if they were their own.

Today, advancements in technology and the use of computers have drastically improved charting, billing, and patient safety. Today, there is better access to care for all patients; better drugs and medications; safer medication packaging; more vaccines to prevent serious illnesses; and groundbreaking neonatal advances—all of which means fewer serious illnesses, less hospitalization, and fewer invasive surgeries. Now doctors can focus on the kind of care that prevents illnesses and injuries before they happen. 50 years is a significant landmark event for the Pediatric Medical Group of Santa Maria…and for the patients and families who have supported us. Thank you! And here’s to another half century of service to your children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. In five decades, the world will be a very different place.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Your Health Conditions! Silvana Bilicska grew up surrounded by healing, with both parents as professionals in the medical field. Over the years she has gravitated towards holistic medicine. She has a strong belief that our bodies should be treated as a whole, rather than focusing on a single condition or symptom.

Invested in their clients, for more than 20 years! … Central Coast Investments, a professional real estate brokerage

When her husband was diagnosed with lymphoma a few years back, Silvana purchased a Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen chamber. While assisting him in the healing process she discovered that Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) could also help with a myriad of other conditions such as Stroke, Traumatic Brain Injury, Autism, Lyme Disease, joint pain, headaches, and more. Those findings led her to open up her clinic. HBOT helped her husband reach partial remission from his condition. This unique healing modality has also worked for others that she has treated, and she continues to make HBOT accessible to help people heal themselves from the various ailments that trouble them. Contact Silvana today to learn more, and discuss how using Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can create your desired picture of health.

The Best Defense. Bad things sometimes happen to good people. When they do, you’re going to need a good criminal defense lawyer with a proven track record. It has been said that 95% of legal clients are essentially good, hard-working people who have never been in trouble before. Should you find yourself in need of a criminal defense lawyer, here are 3 key qualities to look for: 1. Experience: It’s not just about having a law degree; but having years of experience dealing with a wide variety of personalities and legal challenges. Each criminal case, from DUI mis-

Approachability: An experienced lawyer will present and explain all possible legal options as well as help you understand the legal principals and procedures that you will need to deal with in order to have a sense of calm and understanding while your case is resolved. 3. Credibility: The cornerstone of an effective lawyer is his ability to establish a high level of trust with clients, judges, and even the opposing counsel. This trait is earned over time through involvement in the local court system and years of trying cases and relationship building. If you are in need of legal council, count on a highly skilled and reputable attorney. Eat, Shop & Be Entertained in Downtown Paso Back in the late 80s we had 33 vacancies downtown. If not for Main Street’s program through the office of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, we could have closed the door and tossed the key on our downtown. Walmart had just moved in on the edge of town. The Main Street program brought our merchants and some property owners together with a format for change under the name of the Downtown Paso Robles Main Street Association. We picked ourselves up by our own bootstraps and now, 28 years later, rents have quadrupled downtown and spaces rent as soon as, if not before, when vacated. The Main Street program WORKS – if you WORK it! Since 1988, when the Paso Robles Main Street Program was established, our greatest accomplishments include: · Zero vacancy factor · Proliferation of new restaurants· Awarded Main Street District of the Year for 2001 by the State of California · Awarded the Great American National Main Street Award in 2004 by the National Main Street Center · Opening a nine-plex cinema and securing agreement from the City that no new theatre complex would be built unless it was built in the downtown core. · Restoration of historic ballrooms, buildings & bandstand · Return of the sulfur baths to downtown Being designated a “Main Street Demonstration City” has provided tremendous credibility to our goals and efforts in revitalizing Downtown Paso Robles. Since

1988, downtown has re-emerged as the center of the city. Through Main Street, we have a thriving retail center that utilizes its historic landmarks and has a clear-cut identity. We have become an example to other cities of what is possible with a dedicated community. Restaurants and wine bars have opened and the expansion is beginning to move into our second stories as additional shops and restaurants are development around the edges of downtown. We do not have a parking problem, we now have a success problem. Although parking can be difficult at some peak times if you want to park in front of the store you intend to visit, for the most part there is plenty of free parking downtown with a block or two of the action. The Downtown Paso Robles Main Street Association has brought thousands of residents and tourists into the downtown through events held in the downtown core, such as the Olive Festival, Central Coast Lavender Festival, Taste of Downtown, Wedding and Special Event EXPO, and our numerous holiday events and parade. The merchants and property owners of Downtown Paso Robles will continue to grow and change in order to provide the community with a downtown where families and tourists can come to shop and be entertained.

When Does a Bar Become a Bistro? In Avila Beach, the answer is: when a bona fide foodie and former Cal Poly student with old-world Italian roots purchased Cuvée, initially just a champagne bar. Frank Radogna thought it was about time that the undiscovered treasure that is Avila Beach became a known destination spot, with a truly write-home-and-rave-about-it eatery offering first-class champagnes and wines. In February of this year, Cuvée
