Tri-Tip and Taps

t Old San Luis BBQ Co., it’s not about having too many choices— it’s about having the right choices. And deciding couldn’t be easier; whether you pick their classic Santa Maria style tri-tip, slow cooked pork shoulder, or juicy barbecued chicken, you’re sure to love it. To top it all off, you can now pair that delicious barbecue grub with a tasty brew from one of their 46 self serve taps! It’s effortless. Just open a tab with the attendant and use the microchipped beer card to pour a taste or a pint, it’s up to you! Just set the card onto the tablet above the tap of your choice, then pour yourself something delicious. Explore a wide range of ever-changing craft beer offerings as well as wine and cider, too. The best part? You can try just a sip of each beer until you find just the right offering to fit your taste. Never has discovering your new favorite lager, stout, sour, or IPA been this much fun. The longtime local hangout, popular with college students and families alike, Old San Luis BBQ has recently expanded to accommodate growing demand. A newly renovated taproom— once the home of West End Coffee— is now open to the public and decked out with a clean modern-industrial style, big TVs, bright windows, a beautiful limestone accent wall, concrete tabletops, and shelves stacked high with tabletop games make for an inviting atmosphere for all ages. “Come in and hang out; stay a while,” said owner Matt Pearce. “We want people to feel welcome to enjoy their

food, try a few beers, and experience this new technology. We are only the second location in the county to offer this experience; it’s pretty cutting edge.” Whether it’s 2 p.m. or 2 a.m., you’ll still find the same high quality delivered on every plate. From the hand trimmed USDA certified Angus tri-tip to the perfectly spiced pinquito beans, Pearce believes in delivering consistent quality that represents the culture of the Central Coast. “It’s simple really, just salt, pepper, and garlic. But, when we cook it over the oak magic happens,” Pearce said. “For the past five years, we’ve worked hard to bring the best quality and most traditional Santa Maria style barbecue flavor to the SLO community. I’m really happy that we’ve been able to share our love for this unique cuisine, and now with our curated craft taproom, our love of beer too.” Old San Luis BBQ Co. is conveniently located in downtown, offering scenic creekside seating and a grab-and-go take out window. Pearce, a Poly grad, aims to give back to the community that has supported him with fair prices and student discounts. Of course, local beer is a given, but not exclusive. Their new taproom offers craft beer and wine from around the world. Old San Luis BBQ invites everyone in SLO to come on in and taste through the wide selection on the new self-serve tap system. You’ll find it’s the perfect accompaniment any authentic, Santa Maria style barbecue meal. 2

Comfort is King

T

By Hayley Thomas Cain

he holidays are all about spending quality family time, kicking back with good friends, and counting our blessings for the year. You know what that means. It’s finally time to celebrate while digging into some truly satisfying comfort food. However, not all comfort food is created equal. At Apple Farm, each menu item is made from scratch the old fashioned way. Ingredients are always fresh, often procured from a local farmer’s market. Perfect for large parties, intimate gatherings, and chill date nights, special requests and dietary restrictions are no bother for this notoriously friendly waitstaff. If the idea of classic, stick-to-your-gills fall favorites like the meatloaf, pot roast, and turkey pot pie have you feeling cozy as can be, you’ll want to swing by this iconic local favorite for a memorable meal just like mom used to make. Well, sort of like mom used to make, but way better. You might even be surprised—all apps, entrees, lunches, and dinners are served with a fresh twist. The Rosemary Fried Chicken is stuffed with prosciutto and smoked Gouda; the beet salad is laden with goat cheese fritters and drizzled with blood orange vinaigrette; and the loaded mac and cheese sports cowboy sausage, tasso ham, and chicken. Be prepared to experience the quality of bygone goodness crafted in a new light. As a proud partner of the local wine country scene, Apple Farm also offers

up fine wine from Edna Valley to Paso Robles. This is a wine list you have to see to believe. “The Winemakers Dinner Series is my favorite part of my job,” said Apple Farm Chef Steven Smeets. “Each month, we partner with a local winery and feature them in several ways in the hotel and restaurant. We always taste through a winery’s entire selection and decide which flavors will really enhance the food.” The best part for you? All the hard work of pairing is done ahead of time, so you can just kick your feet up and enjoy the moment. You’ll savor six courses including passed appetizers when you arrive (and yes, that starts off with California sparkling to get you in the mood). Sweet tooths, listen up: dessert is paired with late harvest or port wine when available. Here in SLO, winter weather is often just as gorgeous as the spring. Why not lounge on the heated patio and enjoy live acoustic music? Be sure to admire the gorgeous table arrangements put together by the talented gift shop team and visit them on your way out for all your holiday gift needs. “You will get to meet the winemaker and the chef and get the opportunity to hear about the winery and the thought process of pairing the food with the wine,” Smeets said of the unique winemaker dinners. “This is a special experience, fine dining food with a truly comfortable and relaxed ambiance.” 2

ne taste of Peachy Canyon’s famed zinfandel, and you’ll instantly know why this longtime winery has become an icon of Paso Robles Wine Country. The winery celebrates its 30th year in 2018, but that doesn’t mean that all things have stayed the same. Since 1988, the family owned winery and tasting room—located on Paso’s famed westside—has produced some of the finest wines in the world. That isn’t the kind of goal you ever stop working toward, as founders Doug and Nancy Beckett will tell you. “We’re all about quality, not quantity,” Doug said. “Great soils, good weather and a team that will not settle for anything less than producing the finest wines the Central Coast has to offer. Peachy Canyon Winery is all about family, from our cellar workers to our tasting room staff, farm crew and sales team, we are all a part of Peachy Canyon and dedicated to this goal.” Decades ago, the winery’s Especial Zinfandel was listed as Wine Spectator’s 100 Best Wines, and—since then—the accolades have kept rolling in. Many Peachy wines are ranked with 90-pointplus scores, often for multiple vintages. Today, a limited selection of choice Peachy Canyon wines are available for distribution in the U.S., Canada, UK, Japan, Korea, and China, with the most limitedallocation, low production wines available direct from the winery in the U.S. Zinfandel has long been Peachy Canyon’s flagship varietal—oftentimes with multiple vineyard designates in production. These reds range from elegant and restrained to fruit forward, each an exemplary call to its own terroir.

Still, the family keeps its vibe as local friendly as possible, even offering a “VIPeachy” program for SLO County residents that includes complimentary glasses of wine during select times and exclusive discounts. The Peachy Canyon Old School House tasting room, located in the heart of Paso Robles’ wine country on Highway 46 West, remains a landmark attraction. Live music at the old fashioned gazebo has become a tradition and the gift shop is always well stocked with perfect holiday gifts each winter. Although zinfandels do dominate the tasting menu, you will also find cabernet sauvignon, merlot, malbec, petite sirah, viognier, and more available to sample at Peachy Canyon, including a series of premium Bordeaux-style wines. These wines are epitomized by Peachy’s Para Siempre, a top-tier Bordeaux blend based in petit verdot, cabernet sauvignon, and cabernet franc; Ms. Behave Malbec; a rich multi-award winning Malbec; and Peachy Canyon’s newest offering Ms. Behave Petit Verdot. Want more than just a taste of the Peachy lifestyle? Reserve a room at the Canyon Inn and take in panoramic views of a stunning 50-acre vineyard. The vacation rental sleeps up to six and features two bedrooms, two and a half baths, living room, family room, full kitchen, dining area, and barbecue for entertaining, Paso style. Peachy Canyon has been instrumental in establishing Paso Robles’ reputation as a key California wine region. “We continue to focus on our roots as zinfandel producers and as ambassadors for the great wines of Paso Robles,” Doug said. 2

ood things tend to happen when you look up from your iPhone. This fall, make a date with Thomas Hill Organics and experience just how fresh, seasonal produce can bring you back to what really matters. Good conversation; live jazz on Friday nights; incredible beer, wine, and cocktails are waiting. All you have to do is put down the distractions. Ascend the steps of Monterey Street’s newest dining destination and choose between the intimate outdoor patio or the laid back modern dining room, punctuated by moody lighting, exposed brick, and a cozy bar perfect for enjoying small plates with friends. Both spaces are available for all your seasonal party needs, whether a sparse shindig with friends or a large office party. “We have the best ambiance in the county for parties and events between both restaurants,” said THO Owner Debbie Thomas. New Executive Chef Kurt Metzger is currently playing with the best of fall flavors at both the SLO and original Paso Robles locations. The celebrated chef’s long list of culinary credits include his acclaimed Kitchen 4140, The Spotted Cow Catering and Pop-Up Dinner Co. in San Diego. “The Central Coast is my new home, and I love it. I’m smack in the middle of farmers and vineyards. Being able to walk out my kitchen door and be on a farm or

at a vineyard within 20 minutes is just amazing,” Metzger said. The chef ’s braised short ribs with smoked crispy polenta (included in Food Network show The Best Thing I Ever Ate) is now cooking in THO’s wood fire oven in Paso Robles. The SLO location, Thomas Hill Organic Kitchen, reflects a coastal influence with oysters, sesame crusted ahi tuna, and a fantastic smoked salmon BLTA with crispy bacon, heirloom tomato, slaw, and lemon-herb aioli served on two slightly charred slices of thick levain bread. Eight years ago, Thomas vowed to take on a hefty goal: To use fresh, local, and organic ingredients in her Paso Robles restaurant. Who could have predicted that a simple, green dream could evolve into a true Central Coast dining phenomenon? Now, her Monterey location is celebrating its anticipated one year anniversary. Thomas invites the community to celebrate along with staff, friends, family, and area farmers. Stop by on Nov. 14 from 5 to 8 p.m. for a farm fresh bash featuring live music by Matthew Kim and Donna Lu, complimentary appetizers and bubbly. “Debbie and I share a love of great food and great wine—the idea that simple and fresh ingredients can be combined to create something unexpected,” Metzger said. “Join us as we celebrate the past year and look toward a bright future ahead.” 2

Owner/Chef Brian Appiano PHOTO BY SHANNON McMILLEN PHOTOGRAPHY

Three bold Locations By Hayley Thomas Cain

T

he Rib Line has not risen to the top of its game by cutting corners. Since the get-go, chef/owner Brian Appiano has strived to create delicious barbecue with the finest ingredients available. That means quality cuts of meat are wood-fired or slow smoked to perfection, the pulled pork is always tender, salads are always crisp, and the honey corn bread is always moist and fresh. “Our Santa Maria style Black Angus tri-tip is truly ‘the cut of the Central Coast,’ seasoned with our housemade dry rub and slow cooked over red oak to medium rare,” Appiano said. “We don’t do anything the easy way, and you can truly taste the difference in every bite.” Indeed, that particularly tasty tri-tip was famously featured on The Food Network’s popular show, Man vs. Food Nation. Want to try some barbecue for yourself? With two locations in SLO—the original Los Osos Valley Road and Broad Street locales—plus a new Grover Beach eatery, it’s never been easier to grab some ribs, a pulled pork sandwich, and a few handmade sides. Eat in or grab your order to go; the ambiance is always friendly and casual. Plus, feeding the whole family is made easy with well-portioned barbecue plates of chicken, pork, and beef paired with classic wholesome fixin’s like beans, sweet potato fries, cole slaw, and sourdough garlic bread. Did I mention they also have free delivery in SLO County? You may even be surprised to see lighter fare, too. Fish and shrimp

tacos and lemon grilled salmon, plus vegetarian options, are offered alongside staples like the popular “Piggy” pulled pork sandwich and “King’s Dream,” a tri-tip sandwich layered with bacon and avocado on a brioche bun with pepper jack and barbecue sauce. New this year, The Rib Line is also rolling out unique craft beer and barbecue pairings the likes of which the region has never before experienced. Stop in and taste what happens when local barbecue collides with the best local brews. Updates to beer and wine pairings are always changing and posted to social media. Catering continues to be a large part of the business, and The Rib Line sure does get around. The chef’s reputation precedes him, which is a humbling experience: The Rib Line has won several local food competitions, and its chili even won First Place People’s Choice in the World Food Championship in Las Vegas. Born and raised in the Bay Area, Appiano fell in love with the Central Coast after graduating from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Raised in a family that loved to prepare big family meals, the budding chef cut his chops feeding the brothers of Phi Kappa Psi. Truth be told, the chef also used his culinary prowess to woo the love of his life, Krystal. Together with his wife and three kids, this hard-working familyowned business has woven family cooking traditions into each and every plate. Try it for yourself and you’ll see why Appiano has dedicated his life to providing the highest-quality barbecue to local customers he proudly calls friends. 2

## 3 Chronic Cellars

## 9 Twin Coyotes Winery

The concept of Chronic Cellars came about during the harvest in 2004. We had used the term “The Chronic” to describe likable objects before, but we had never considered it a suitable descriptor for wine. One evening we laughed about the idea of a wine that targeted a casual lifestyle. From dream to reality, our fi rst wines went public in 2008. Stop by and try our handcrafted wines in a fun and casual atmosphere.

Twin Coyotes Winery is owned and operated by twin brothers Steve and Stu Thompson and their families. We believe in good wine, fun times, and environmental sustainability. Our wines are handmade in small batches, using hand-picked grapes that are at their fullest flavor. We sometimes work late into the night and can often hear the local coyotes howling, so, of course, we howl along with them—wine is meant to be fun.

o visit Opolo Vineyards is to take a step into an unforgettable experience. After an idyllic drive through vineyards and beautiful countryside, guests are welcomed into a tasting room full of culture and tradition, with an equally present sense of uniqueness and individuality. As a nod to Quinn’s Serbian heritage, the name Opolo stems from a rose discovered on the Dalmatian Coast. Co-owners Rick Quinn and Dave Nichols bottled their first vintage in 1999, opening the tasting room in 2001. On property it is evident that Opolo is synonymous with fun. The team strives to maintain a welcome atmosphere that encourages guests to embark on a casual and genuine tasting experience. The perfect pairing of knowledgeable, passionate attendants and approachable wines proves that wine tasting can be engaging and enchanting in the same sitting. Opolo weaves its Old World tradition with day-to-day happenings by serving homemade Balkan sausage, or cevapi, with artisan wood-fired pizza expertly paired with a glass of wine and vineyard views. Claiming nearly 300 acres of vines on the east and west side of Paso Robles, Opolo Vineyards is privy to a wide range in climate, soil and growing potential— allowing more than 32 varietals to f lourish. The westside vineyard is located in the Willow Creek AVA offering

temperatures nearly 10 degrees cooler than the east side counterpart, with a crisp ocean breeze that creates a cooling effect on the grapes. This allows Opolo to produce typically cooler-climate wines such as Pinot Noir and Roussanne. In contrast, the eastside vineyards are arid providing the ideal climate for varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel, Opolo’s flagship varietal. Because of the ranging terroir, Opolo specializes in unique single varietals and strikingly creative blends. Not only home to delectable wines, Opolo Vineyards has become home to special events. Most notably the annual Harvest Festival, the third week in October, where guests throw caution to the wind and stomp grapes with bare feet overlooking acres of vines and enjoy free-flowing wine, delicious dinner and Serbian entertainment. While the options range from quintessential vineyard weddings, exclusive winemaker’s dinners, cheerful wine club pick-up parties—new events and offerings are continually being introduced to increasing opportunities to experience Opolo’s lively personality beyond the tasting room. Be sure not to miss new announcements from the Opolo family for events, releases and promotions. Follow on social media @opolowines or check the website for the latest events and offerings. 2
