e’ve got a delicious idea: Flip open this spring edition of Menus and choose a restaurant. A winery. A market. Then make a point of dropping by that establishment in the next week. You might be revisiting an old favorite, or you could be venturing outside of your comfort zone and exposing your taste buds to new and exciting flavors. Either way, you’re sure to find great food and drink produced by people who are as passionate about this region as they are about what they serve to their hungry guests. Another idea: Make this a monthly ritual to carry you through the spring and summer—until our next Menus publication comes out in the fall.

Family owned since 1954

A 60 year old Pismo Beach tradition that lives on! Our Story:

Brad & Helen Phillips bought “The Hut,” a small hamburger stand in 1953. “The Hut” burned down in 1955, & the new “Brad’s” restaurant was built in 1956. In 1973, the family purchased the lot adjacent to the restaurant for use as a parking lot. After 20 fruitful years Brad & Helen retired in 1976, leasing the restaurant outside the family. Following Brad’s death in 1979, the family began talking about re-opening the restaurant. In 1981, Helen Phillips, with the help & support of her daughters & grandchildren, opened the third edition of Brad’s restaurant. The parking lot turned into a patio in 1983, & forever changed the business. Formerly known as a coffee shop, with a strong breakfast trade, Brad’s became a full-fledged restaurant, with a growing reputation for Seafood, Clam Chowder & Barbecue. Helen Phillips died on Christmas Day in 1990, & the restaurant passed to her daughters, MaryAnn Becker, Sharlene Bryant, & Gerry Graham. Brad’s has always been managed by a family member & has always been known for delicious home cooking & “member of the family” service.

J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines

In 1988, perfect climatic conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon led Jerry Lohr to Paso Robles, where his estate vineyards now encompass over 2,300 acres of Bordeaux and Rhône reds. The J. Lohr Paso Robles Wine Center, a facility certified by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance, pours daily from four award-winning tiers of estatesdriven, vineyard-focused wines including J. Lohr Estates, the Vineyard Series, the Cuvée Series and the Rhône-inspired Gesture series.

After spending 30 years working with large dry farm vineyards and making wine, Kevin Healey knows how to produce some of the most sought after wines in California. His partner, Sherman Smoot, spent 30 years in commercial aviation sampling wines from all over the world. Sherm developed a palate for unique wines and used his degree in Biological Sciences to help him understand Enology and Viticulture. Together they produce award-winning wines.

Chronic Cellars

10

The concept of Chronic Cellars came about in the midst of harvestin 2004. We had used the term “The Chronic” to describe likable objects before, but we had never considered it a suitable descriptor for wine. We sat alongside the crush pad one evening in our wine stained clothes and wet boots laugh-ing about the idea of a wine that targeted a casual lifestyle. From dream to reality, our fi rst wines went public in 2008. Stop by Chronic Cellars and try our handcrafted wines in a fun and casual atmosphere. Hang out in a cozy booth by the fi replace while you and your friends play some pool or picnic outside under our covered patio. Open Daily 11:30am-5:30pm.

As a family with an agricultural heritage dating back 8 generations, the Merrill’s pride themselves on producing premium wines through sustainable practices. As a SIP certified winery, these beliefs are shared by Pomar Junction’s Head Winemaker, Jim Shumate, who is involved every step of the way. Together, they choose the finest blocks of grapes from the Pomar Junction Estate, as well as from vineyards located in Santa Barbara & Monterey Counties.
