SPRING/SUMMER 2018

he rain fell just in time to make you wonder if spring would actually come to the Central Coast this year. It was cold and made you yearn for that sunny warmth that brings a seat outside, a cold beer, and some farm-to-table nibbles. Well, sun’s out, fun’s out, and so is the annual Spring/Summer Menus, which can take you to that special spot and more if you open it up and take a peek. Find out what’s new, classic, and refreshing at Old San Luis BBQ Co., the Madonna Inn, and the Apple Farm. Or if you simply want to take yourself to that wine place, Opolo Vineyards and Peachy Canyon Winery can show you the way.

ure, you know Apple Farm for its delicious from-scratch comfort food, but did you know this beloved SLO restaurant also serves up farm-tofork freshness and a host of vegan and vegetarian dishes daily? Enjoy plant-based meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner— and we’re talking about way more than your average salad. Just ask Chef Steven Smeets, who focuses on serving farmer’s market fare with a comfort twist. “For lunch we have a rotating vegan special of the week, like our grilled portobello mushroom burger with sprouts, avocado, and glazed balsamic,” Smeets said. “Our bakery also includes gluten-free items, too. Yes, we’re a classic, meat and potatoes kind of place, but—more than that—we’re a family restaurant and we want to be able to accommodate everyone and make them feel welcome.” This warm sentiment echoes Apple Farm’s longstanding commitment to hospitality in SLO. This year marks the eatery’s 40th birthday—a huge accomplishment and a source of pride for the entire staff. “From 1978 to 2018, the Apple Farm owes its longevity to the fact we treat our customers like friends and we’re sure to feed them that way, too,” Smeets said of the milestone. A lot has changed at the restaurant over the years—which now includes a beautiful patio strung up with twinkle lights and lush greenery—but a lot has also stayed the same. For one? Quality. Each menu item is made from scratch the old fashioned way. Perfect for large parties, intimate gatherings, and chill date nights, special requests and dietary restrictions are no bother for this notoriously-friendly waitstaff. If the idea of an albacore tuna fish sandwich with tart granny smith apples, sprouts, and shaved carrots inspires a

spring in your step, you’ll want to swing by this iconic local favorite for a memorable meal just like mom used to make. Well, sort of like mom used to make, but way better. You might even be surprised— all apps, entrees, lunches, and dinners are served with a fresh twist. Rosemary crusted striped bass served with sautéed kale, lemon, and wild rice pilaf; the Caesar salad with roasted garlic; and bruschetta topped with juicy tomatoes, cucumber, peppers, and goat cheese pesto offer up a light, seasonal vibe. That said, you can still get loaded mac and cheese, turkey pot pie, and a blackened, Cajun-spiced black and bleu burger topped with cambozola cheese. As a proud partner of the local wine country scene, Apple Farm also offers up fine wines from Edna Valley to Paso Robles. This is a wine list you have to see to believe. Each month from May through October, the restaurant partners with a different local winery to create an epic paired experience. The best part for you? All the hard work of pairing is done ahead of time. You’ll savor six courses including passed appetizers when you arrive (and yes, that starts off with California sparkling to get you in the mood). Here in SLO, spring is the perfect time to eat under sunny blue skies. Why not lounge on the patio and enjoy live acoustic music? The Apple Farm features a full bar and all of your favorite classic cocktails, including signature drinks like the SLO Mule, Spiced Sangria, and Nutty Apple. In the mood for something sweet? Break out the forks and share a generous dessert, including almond bread pudding, apple crisp, fruit cobbler, or chocolate truffle cheesecake. “From breakfast to dessert—no matter your preference or taste—Apple Farm is sure to feed whatever you’re craving,” Smeets said. “We welcome you in, whether for the first or four-hundredth visit.” 2

Flour House is the project of a husband-and-wife team – one Italian by birth and the other by blood – who bring Italy’s modern aesthetic and obsession with quality to the Central Coast restaurant scene. Their shared love for Italian culture and cuisine compelled them to open Flour House, a modern eatery offering house-made pasta, aperitivi, and specializing in Pizza Napoletana, a heritage style so precious that it’s guarded by Italian law: simple, light, fresh, flavorful, and delicious. In the hands of someone who knows how to use them, even the humblest of ingredients like flour and water can be transformed into delicious pizzas and pastas. Combine that expertise with the abundant produce of the Central Coast and the only authentic, imported Stefano Ferrara wood-burning pizza oven between Los Angeles and San Francisco, and you have an establishment like none other in San Luis Obispo.

hy deal with all the annoyances of travel when you can enjoy all the luxuries of a weekend getaway without even having to leave town? For world travelers and locals alike, there is no place quite like Madonna Inn to recharge, indulge, and enjoy. Under the Madonna Inn’s shimmering pink roof, many experiences await. Relax with a facial or massage at the spa before splashing into the hotel’s iconic beachentry pool and hot tubs; energize the senses with live music, enjoy mingling, dancing, and cocktails at the SILVER Bar Cocktail Lounge; or take in an afternoon hike complete with wildlife, rolling hills, and ocean views. You can also gallop horseback along green pastures on an adventurous trail ride. Where else can you feast your innermost desires so readily? Nosh on a small plate of avocado toast paired with an expertly crafted cocktail, dig into a world famous slice of Champagne cake at the Copper Cafe, or dig into a hearty steak dinner with all the fixings in the Gold Rush Steak House. Local wine is always ready for pairing— just check out the hotel’s killer wine room, as beautiful as it is well stocked. You already know that San Luis Obispo is one of the best places to enjoy a range of craft beers, but did you know that Madonna Inn is ground zero for discovering cool local brews? In addition to hosting various food, wine, and beer festivals in the Madonna Meadows, Madonna Inn now features unique bottled craft beers at the SILVER Bar Cocktail Lounge, including Barrel House Mango IPA, brewed in Paso Robles. Of course, there’s no outshining the longstanding star of the bar: Madonna Inn’s signature cocktails. Bar Manager Jimmy Berlow and his team of highly-

trained bartenders are always coming up with new twists on old classics, as well as totally inventive seasonal specials. You can bet that every highball, martini, or tumbler is filled with the freshest ingredients, too. “We are hyper local, using ingredients like mint and Meyer lemons found on the ranch. Plus, we always make all of our own house-made syrups from scratch,” Berlow said. As you already know, Madonna Inn’s decor is always celebratory, seasonal, and totally fun. The inn’s drink menu—whether featuring a holiday drink with chocolate and mint or an over-the-top Easter PeepTini—is always full of surprises. To complement these festive drinks, Madonna Inn has also rolled out a line up of savory appetizers, like Hearty Pick ‘n Shovel Sliders, served on a house-made bun, with a brie cheese and garlic aioli sauce. You might work up an appetite after dancing to the inn’s nightly live music, which fills the ballroom with excitement and energy. Why not order up a plate of Truffle Fingerling Potatoes, Portobello Fries, or an Artisan Cheese Plate for the table? Be sure to also try the steak and lobster special offered nightly. “The bar and kitchen are very similar in philosophy; we don’t take any short cuts because we want everything to taste the best it possibly can,” Berlow said. Whether your visit is for the full weekend or just a quick drink after work, Madonna Inn’s accommodating staff, whimsical atmosphere, and outstanding menu offerings make it the ideal choice. The Madonna Inn restaurants, hotel, spa, and horseback riding opportunities are open to the public. Spa services include cookies and tea with every treatment and spa guests are welcomed to use the pool. 2

pring is here, and you know what that means. Yes, plenty of weddings, family reunions, and birthday parties happening here on the sunny Central Coast. Whether you’re celebrating at the beach or in your very own backyard, give your friends and family what they really want. I’m talking about the old school Central Coast classics: flavorful Santa Maria style barbecued tri-tip and chicken, tender and juicy pulled pork, fresh salads, garlic bread, corn pie, and plenty of pinquito beans to go around. Old San Luis BBQ Co.’s been cooking up these tried-and-true f lavors for years—and now you can get that iconic barbecue grub anytime, anywhere. It’s easy. Just fill out their online catering form and choose your service style (full cook-on-site, limited staffed buffet, or delivery or pick-up). At Old San Luis BBQ Co., it’s all about the warm, inviting lifestyle of the Central Coast. A longtime local hangout, Old SLO expanded last fall to accommodate growing demand. A newly renovated taproom (once the home of West End Coffee)—decked out with a clean modern-industrial style, big TVs, bright windows, a beautiful limestone wall, concrete tabletops, and shelves stacked high with tabletop games— makes for a chill atmosphere for all ages. College students and longtime locals agree: The perfect way to wash down all this barbecued goodness is a frosty craft beer. The new taproom boasts a top-of-the-line self-serve beer tap system featuring 46 craft taps. Just open a tab with the attendant and use the microchipped beer card to pour a taste or a pint. Set the card on the tablet above the tap of your choice, then pour yourself

something delicious. Of course, local beer is a given, but not exclusive. Their new taproom offers craft beer, wine, and cider from around the world. “Come in and hang out; stay a while,” owner Matt Pearce said. “We want people to feel welcome to enjoy their food, try a few beers, and experience this new technology. We are only the second location in the county to offer this experience. It’s cutting edge.” Pearce, a Cal Poly grad, aims to give back to the community that has supported him with fair prices and discounts to students, clubs, and all downtown employees. He recalls, “I was a student once, and I remember what it was like trying to stretch every dollar.” The restaurant also works with several local nonprofits for fundraisers throughout the year. Whether it’s 2 p.m. or 2 a.m—catered to your event or ordered at the restaurant— you’ll still find the same high quality delivered to every plate. From the handtrimmed USDA certified Angus tri-tip to the perfectly spiced pinquito beans, Pearce believes in delivering consistent quality products that represent the culture of the Central Coast. “It’s simple really; just salt, pepper, and garlic. But when we cook it over the oak, magic happens,” Pearce said. “For the past five years, we’ve worked hard to bring the best quality and most traditional Santa Maria style barbecue flavor to the SLO community. I’m really happy that we’ve been able to share our love for this unique cuisine—and now—with our curated craft taproom, our love of beer, too.” Old San Luis BBQ Co. is conveniently located in downtown. In addition to the taproom, they also offer scenic creekside seating and a grab-and-go takeout window. 2

We had used the term “The Chronic” to describe likable objects before, but we had never considered it a suitable descriptor for wine. Great Times, Award-Winning Wines

T

o visit Opolo Vineyards is to take a step into an unforgettable experience. After an idyllic drive through vineyards and beautiful countryside, guests are welcomed into a tasting room full of culture and tradition, with an equally present sense of uniqueness and individuality. As a nod to Quinn’s Serbian heritage, the name Opolo stems from a rose discovered on the Dalmatian Coast. Co-owners Rick Quinn and Dave Nichols bottled their first vintage in 1999, opening the tasting room in 2001. On property it is evident that Opolo is synonymous with fun. The team strives to maintain a welcoming atmosphere that encourages guests to embark on a casual and genuine tasting experience. The perfect pairing of knowledgeable, passionate attendants and approachable wines proves that wine tasting can be engaging and enchanting in the same sitting. Opolo weaves its Old World tradition with day-to-day happenings by serving homemade Balkan sausage, or cevapi, with artisan wood-fired pizza expertly paired with a glass of wine and vineyard views. Claiming nearly 300 acres of vines on the east and west side of Paso Robles, Opolo Vineyards is privy to a wide range in climate, soil, and growing potential— allowing more than 32 varietals to flourish. The westside vineyard is located in the Willow Creek AVA, offering

temperatures nearly 10 degrees cooler than the eastside counterpart, with a crisp ocean breeze that creates a cooling effect on the grapes. This allows Opolo to produce typically cooler-climate wines such as Pinot Noir and Roussanne. In contrast, the eastside vineyards are arid, providing the ideal climate for varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel, Opolo’s flagship varietal. Because of the ranging terroir, Opolo specializes in unique single varietals and strikingly creative blends. Not only home to delectable wines, Opolo Vineyards has become home to special events. Most notably the annual Harvest Festival, the third week in October, where guests throw caution to the wind and stomp grapes with bare feet overlooking acres of vines and enjoy free-flowing wine, delicious dinner, and Serbian entertainment. While the options range from quintessential vineyard weddings and exclusive winemaker’s dinners to cheerful wine club pick-up parties—new events and offerings are continually being introduced increasing opportunities to experience Opolo’s lively personality beyond the tasting room. Be sure not to miss new announcements from the Opolo family for events, releases, and promotions. Follow on social media @opolowines or check the website for the latest events and offerings. 2

Celebrating 30 Years

O

By Hayley Thomas Cain

ne taste of Peachy Canyon’s famed zinfandel, and you’ll instantly know why this longtime winery has become an icon of Paso Robles Wine Country. The winery celebrates its 30th year in 2018, but that doesn’t mean that all things have stayed the same. Since 1988, the family-owned winery and tasting room—located on Paso’s famed westside—has produced some of the finest wines in the world. That isn’t the kind of goal you ever stop working toward, as founders Doug and Nancy Beckett will tell you. “We’re all about quality, not quantity,” Doug Beckett said. “Great soils, good weather, and a team that will not settle for anything less than producing the finest wines the Central Coast has to offer. Peachy Canyon Winery is all about family, from our cellar workers to our tasting room staff, farm crew and sales team, we are all a part of Peachy Canyon and dedicated to this goal.” Decades ago, the winery’s ‘Especial’ Zinfandel was listed as Wine Spectator’s 100 Best Wines ever, and—since then— the accolades have continued rolling in. Many Peachy wines are ranked with 90-point-plus scores, often for multiple vintages. Today, a limited selection of choice Peachy Canyon wines are distributed in the US, Canada, UK, Japan, Korea, and China, with the most limited-allocation, low production wines available direct from the winery in the US. Zinfandel has long been Peachy Canyon’s flagship varietal—oftentimes with multiple vineyard designates in production. These reds range from elegant and restrained to fruit forward, each an exemplary call to its own terroir.

Still, the family keeps its vibe as localfriendly as possible, even offering a “VIPeachy” program for SLO County residents that includes complimentary glasses of wine during select times and exclusive discounts. The Peachy Canyon Old School House tasting room, located in the heart of Paso Robles’ wine country on Highway 46 West, remains a landmark attraction. Live music at the old fashioned gazebo has become a tradition and the gift shop is always well stocked with perfect holiday gifts each winter. Although zinfandels do dominate the tasting menu, you will also find cabernet sauvignon, merlot, malbec, petite sirah, viognier, and more available to sample at Peachy Canyon, including a series of premium Bordeaux-style wines. These wines are epitomized by Peachy’s Para Siempre, a top-tier Bordeaux blend based in petit verdot, cabernet sauvignon, and cabernet franc; Ms. Behave Malbec, a rich multi-award winning Malbec; and Peachy Canyon’s newest offering, Ms. Behave Petit Verdot. Want more than just a taste of the Peachy lifestyle? Reserve a room at the Canyon Inn and take in panoramic views of a stunning 50-acre vineyard. The vacation rental sleeps up to six and features two bedrooms, two and a half baths, living room, family room, full kitchen, dining area, and barbecue for entertaining, Paso style. Peachy Canyon has been instrumental in establishing Paso Robles’ reputation as a key California wine region. “We continue to focus on our roots as Zinfandel producers and as ambassadors for the great wines of Paso Robles,” Beckett said. 2

MAXIMAG PAGE ARCHITECTURE EVEN-NUMBERED (left hand) PAGE Please note all of the following prior to preparation of your document:

The yellow area (within the dark blue guides) represents the live image area (9.25”w x 11.75”h, resulting in am equal .5” white space edge margin on all 4 sides when the product has been folded and trimmed). Please keep all elements other than those that bleed off the page within this area. You may place a horizontal or vertical folio line (i.e. a line of type containing your publication name and the respective page number) immediately outside of the live image area within the green area (.25” beyond the live image area). The pink area represents the final trim area (10.25w” x 12.75”h). The blue area represents the bleed area (10.5”z x 13.25”h), is identical to the overall size of this template document, and extends .25” beyond the above mentioned trim dimensions on top, bottom, and outside). Please extend all elements that are to bleed off of whichever trim edge(s) to cover these respective .25” space(s). The grey area (.5”w x 11.75”h) represents the gutter area, spanning from the interior edge of the live image area to the fold line. Decorative content such as tint areas, background images/illustrations etc. may also be placed within this area, critical text and image matter however should not be placed within this area as its vicinity to the fold will obscure whatever is placed in it. The one exception is in the case of the centerfold position (the center-most page pair aka true doubletruck), which may be constructed as one continuous area being that it will be so physically when the publication is being read.
