COME TOGETHER The holidays are a time to get together with family and friends from all walks of life. With the divisive political climate, it raises the question of whether we can forgive, forget, and celebrate the season with the love and openness that it’s supposed to represent.

Apparently my red-nosed colleague had a little accident tonight, and the big man moved me up to replace him,” Blitzen said. “Accident huh? That’s one way to put it,” I said. “Another way is that someone rubbed him out so they could be back in the number one spot this Christmas.” Blitzen stopped shuffling the cards
and looked up at me. “Just what are you getting at?” he growled. “Don’t play dumb with me, you big galoot,” I shot back. “You led the sleigh for years until Rudolph showed up. All that fame. The fortune. It was all yours until Rudy came along with his oh-so-bright nose and left you playing second fiddle.” “Enough!” Blizten slammed his hoof on the table knocking over the towers of chips in front of him. “Yeah. I admit it. I hated that little goodie-goodies’ guts!” he said. “I busted my hump for years working up to the head of the pack, and that rookie just waltzed in and took my place!” “So you did bump him off,” I said. Blitzen stood up from the table. It wasn’t until then that I realized just how sharp his antlers were. I set my jaw and tried to look tough, but my legs were shaking, and the damn bells on my shoes were jangling uncontrollably. “I won’t lie. I’m glad he’s dead. But I didn’t kill the little pipsqueak,” he said. “I was here with the boys playing poker all night. Just ask anyone in this room.” I looked around at the crowd of very angry reindeer surrounding me, and knew I was outnumbered. I knew I had the short end of the stick, and so did he. “Now unless you’ve got some proof, I suggest you stop making these unseemly accusations and make like a Christmas tree and leave.” “You win, for now,” I said turning toward the door. “By the way, smart guy, Christmas trees don’t have leaves.” CHRISTMASTOWN continued page 13

IV. I woke up in a pile of snow outside the Crooked Antler with black eye and a knot on my head the size of light bulb. “I guess it’s true what they say about reindeer having no sense of humor,” I muttered as I brushed myself off. Suddenly, I heard a voice call out to me from a darkened alley behind the club. In the shadows, I saw a skinnylooking reindeer beckoning me. “Hurry,” he said. “There’s something you need to see.” “I don’t know,” I said. “The last time I mixed it up with reindeer all I got for my troubles was a knock on the noggin.” “I can help you,” the reindeer whispered. “Hurry, before anyone sees us.” I was intrigued, so I followed him through a winding maze of unfamiliar alleyways. At some point he stopped and, in hushed tones, introduced himself as Comet, one of the old veterans who had pulled the sleigh during the good old days along with Blitzen and the others. “Do you know who bumped off Rudy?” I asked. “It’s bigger than Rudolph,” Comet said, his eyes darting back and forth. “I liked Rudy, but he was a naïve dogooder, always sticking that big glowing nose of his where it didn’t belong. This time it got him in big trouble.” “So you’re telling me Blitzen didn’t punch his card to snatch back his spot leading the sleigh?” I said. “So what happened?”
“Rudolph found this,” Comet said, handing me a thick ledger. I didn’t want to ask where he’d been keeping it all this time. The book was massive and bound in red velvet. I recognized it immediately. “This is the naughty and nice list,” I said with awe. “The very one,” he said. “Turn to page 104 and tell me what you see.” I flipped to the page and scanned down it before landing on a name. Timmy Green. He was listed as “nice” and next to the entry was a neatlywritten sum of $2,000. “That name sound familiar?” Comet asked. Of course it did. Everyone is Christmastown knew Timmy “the terror” Green. He was a legendarily naughty kid. Back talking, spitting in public, tripping old ladies in church— the kid’s rap sheet was miles long. No way the Big Guy would confuse this little brat with someone on the nice list. “My god,” I stammered. “Someone’s taking bribes to move bad kids onto the nice list,” Comet said. “Rudy found it and passed it on to me for safekeeping. After I heard what happened to him, I knew I had to get outta town. It’s too dangerous. I think they’re onto me!” “They who?” I asked. “Who … ” I didn’t get a chance to finish my question. I felt something hard slam against the back of my head. My vision tunneled as I went down. I tried to keep a tight grip on the ledger, but I felt it slipping. The last thing I remembered before the

SHARING Pozole has been a traditional holiday dish that I look forward to every year.
Next is the pork. Like I said earlier, every family has a different twist on the pozole but it’s commonly made with pork. You can use chicken or beef. Cut the meat into small chunks and put in a large pot, filled more than half way with water. Cut an entire white onion into thin slices and put into the pot. Dice three garlic cloves and add them to the pot as well. Bring to a boil and then reduce the heat to medium/low. During this process, grease and foam will formulate at the top of the pot; carefully skim it with a spoon. Let the ingredients simmer for about two hours, until the pork is tender. Next, open two 26-ounce cans of Juanita’s Foods Mexican Style Hominy (any brand of hominy will do). Drain the liquid from the cans and use a spoon to add the hominy to the pot of ingredients. Now it’s finally time to add in the chili sauce that we started with. Add salt to taste. Let the stew simmer for about 45 minutes to an hour. As a kid, when it was time to serve I glowed with pride as my mom would tell everyone at the table how I much I
had helped make their dinner. Now I don’t just help, I’m my mom’s copilot—but I still glow with pride when my mom relays my efforts. Once it’s finished cooking, serve the pozole in a bowl with a side of corn tortilla chips. The stew can be garnished with shredded lettuce, diced onions, and a wedge of lemon. We usually have a plate of the garnishes so each person can add as much as they’d like to their bowl. We enjoy our pozole Christmas Eve for dinner, feeding six people, and we serve it for breakfast on Christmas Day. Not only do I enjoy making pozole and later devouring it, I love the time I spend with my mom making it. My family lives in Southern California, a good 4-hour drive from San Luis Obispo. Sure, we talk on the phone all the time, but making our holiday stew together is a time to really catch up. I’ve never missed a Christmas in the kitchen with my mom. y

FIRST COME LIGHTS A string of twinkling lights is the first item Leigh Collier trims her trees with. She fills her home with six Christmas trees, yards of garland, lights, ribbons, wreaths, and more each year.
PHOTOS BY CAMILLIA LANHAM
BACK FLUFF A combination of tulle, mesh, and ribbons are a must for holiday decorating, according to Leigh, who generaously tucks them into garland and between tree branches.
When it comes to filling a house with holiday cheer, it’s all about excess and magic by camillia lanham
ou have to start with a Hallmark Christmas movie,” Leigh Collier says without a trace of irony in her voice. She laughs as I audibly groan, a moment that describes our friendship perfectly. On this particular Monday at the end of October, Marry Me at Christmas kicks it all off. It’s a new release, fresh for 2017’s countdown to Christmas, starring Rachel Skarsten as a bridal boutique owner planning a Christmas wedding and Trever Donovan as the bride’s brother. I’ll give you one guess to figure out what happens. We’re about to replicate some of that scenestealing Christmas movie magic right here in Leigh’s living room by squeezing a little more holiday cheer into the space. We shove the light blue leather armchairs toward the middle of her family room, and she gently maneuvers a fake tree out of the corner. She already has three trees finished: The red and green tree, under which the family’s presents will eventually pile up and on top of which a mossy colored, light-filled, felt top hat is perched where a star would normally be. In the upside-down tree hanging above the dining room table, her grandmother’s 44 silver goblets (originally meant to serve water, wine, cordials, and champagne for 12) take the place of ornaments. A white and silver one has a village of glittering houses tucked between the branches; it was added to the Collier Christmas tree show last year. She’s about to start my favorite tree (and it’s hard to choose), a gold and blue number with 12 ceramic plates surrounded by plastic pine needles, ribbons, tulle, and ornaments. The pale-hued “12 Days of Christmas” collection from Havalin LeMoge is also a family heirloom, slowly purchased at one per year throughout the 1970s. Even more trees will get put up before Thanksgiving. It’s a tradition at the Collier household. Leigh starts lugging boxes of ornaments and garbage bags of ribbon and tulle out the attic in the garage around the end of October. She progresses through the house methodically, one tree at a time, then circles into the front and back yards to hang gigantic plastic ornaments from trees and ensconce all available trim with lights and garland. The house transforms into what can only be described as a Christmas wonderland. When everything is finished, it’s like stepping into a childhood Christmas fantasy—a Hallmark experience, if you will. And she loves every minute of it.

A handy list of holiday tree decorating dos. 1. Take out that string of lights and get cracking. 2. Tulle of your choice. If your tulle is crumpled from last year, just throw it in the dryer for a little bit (but not too long, as it will melt). 3. Mesh. Yes, I didn’t know this was a thing either. But don’t wrap any of this stuff around the tree too tightly, you want to keep things a little loose. 4. Ribbon, preferably of more than one design or color. And you don’t want to wrap the tree in it. Cut it into long strips and sort of tuck it in lengthwise. “You don’t want to see where it begins and ends,” Leigh says. Plus, she adds: “It’s just easier.” 5. For the ornaments: You’ve got to start with the big ones. Work your way from the top of the tree to the bottom. 6. Tuck some of the smaller ornaments toward the back of the tree to give things some depth. 7. Fluff, tuck, and resettle ornaments to your desire. 8. Don’t forget the tree skirt!
THREE FRENCH HENS Anything can make a good Christmas ornament. “The 12 Days of Christmas” ceramic plates collection from Havalin LeMoge was a collectors item in the 1970s. Passed down from a close family friend, Leigh decided to build a tree theme around them.

Jar o’ holiday cheer
Pickled things
Note that I say pickled things, because really they sky is the limit here. Over cucumbers? Try carrots, cauliflowers, Brussels sprouts, or even green beans.
Supplies needed: Mason jars, salt, sugar, vinegar, Kirby cucumbers or desired produce, pickling spices, garlic, fresh dill, hot peppers.
T
COOLEY PHOTO BY RYAH
DIY: Start off by loosely unscrewing the tops off your jars and placing them in a big covered pot filled with water. Bring to a boil and let cook for 15 minutes before removing and drying. This is to sanitize the jars. While that’s going on, make your brine by mixing one part vinegar (say 2 cups) with three parts water (so 6 cups) in a pot on the stove along with 2 teaspoons of sugar and 2 tablespoons of salt. While this mixture comes to a boil, slice up your Kirby cucumbers into long strips and place in jars along with pickling spices, fresh dill, whole cloves of garlic, hot peppers, or whatever seasonings your little heart desires. Pour the hot brine so that it fills the jars. Screw those lids on tight and let sit until cool. Let them marinate for at least a week before eating. The pickles can be stored in the cupboard, but after they’re open, keep them in the fridge.

Searching for Kwanzaa O
ne hot week in August of 1965, the Watts area of Los Angeles exploded in a riot after 21-yearold black motorist Marquette Frye was arrested on drunk driving charges, leading to a roadside argument that escalated into a full-blown fight. Marquette was driving his mother’s ’55 Buick with his brother Ronald in the passenger seat, and after CHP Officer Lee Minikus radioed for the car to be impounded, Ronald walked to their nearby house and returned with his mother, Rena Price. Then things escalated quickly as a crowd gathered amid rumors of police brutality toward Marquette. Back-up was called. The fight escalated. A 46-square-mile area of L.A. became a combat zone, and over the next six days, 34 people died, more than 1,000 were injured, and more than $40 million in property damage occurred. Six months earlier Malcolm X had been assassinated. The Civil Rights Act of 1965 was a deeply divisive issue nationally. Basically, race relations were in the toilet. That’s when Maulana Karenga, an activist and eventually professor of Africana Studies at Cal State Long Beach, and Malcolm X’s cousin Hakim Jamal, formed the US Organization, a black
nationalist group, complementary to the California Black Panther Party. “Wherever US is, we are” was their slogan; the organization stood for black people versus their oppressors. The idea was to promote African-American cultural unity. Toward that aim, the following year Karenga invented the Kwanzaa Festival, designed as the first specifically African-American holiday, to be celebrated from Christmas to the New Year. At the time, Karenga said his goal was to “give blacks an alternative to the existing holiday and give blacks an opportunity to celebrate themselves and history, rather than simply imitate the practice of the dominant society.” Kwanzaa was inspired by African “first fruits” traditions, more like American Thanksgiving, and the name came from the Swahili phrase “matunda ya kwanza,” meaning first fruits. Following the African communitarian philosophy, it features seven principles of African heritage: “Umoja (unity) of family, community, nation, and race; Kujichagulia (selfdetermination) to define, name, create, and speak for ourselves; Ujima (collective work and responsibility) to build and maintain a community and solve problems together; Ujamaa

The SLO County NAACP presents a Multicultural Holiday Celebration and Fundraiser honoring Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Native American, Mexican, and African-American traditions on Sunday, Dec. 10, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in SLO (981 Marsh St.). (cooperative economics) to build our own businesses and profit from them together; Nia (purpose) to make our collective vocation to develop a community and restore our people to greatness; Kuumba (creativity) to leave the community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it; and Imani (faith) in our people, parents, teachers, leaders, and the righteousness of our struggle.” The seven principles are represented in a candelabra with three red, one black, and three green candles, which is the centerpiece of a shrine that includes a mat (Mkeka) on which various symbols are placed, including the candelabra (Kinara), the seven candles (Mishumaa Saba), field crops (Mazoa), corn (Muhindi), a unity cup (Kikombe cha Umoja) for ceremonial toasts of thanks (Shukrani) to African
ancestors, and gifts (Zawadi). The traditional greeting is “joyous Kwanzaa,” and though originally the celebration was meant to replace other religious celebrations, over the years many Christian AfricanAmerican families blended the two and continue to celebrate Christmas and New Year’s. In a 2006 speech, Karenga claimed 28 million people celebrated Kwanzaa, though a 2004 National Retail Foundation marketing survey found only 1.6 percent of those surveyed said they planned to celebrate the holiday, which would be about 5 million people nationwide. The only community Kwanzaa celebration New Times could find locally is the SLO County NAACP’s Multicultural Holiday Celebration and Fundraiser honoring Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Native American, Mexican, and African-American traditions on Sunday, Dec. 10, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 981 Marsh St., SLO.
