sLo 2012
It began with Pong Star power, working princesses, street fights—New Times presents all of this and more as we unveil the winners of our 26th Annual Best of SLO County readers poll. We’ve created a one-stop cheat sheet to direct stalwart locals on their quest to discover and utilize the best businesses and services in the realm—or SLO County. Dine out in style with your favorite videogame couple, or gobble your grub Pac-Man style, with insight into the best eats around the county [6]. Activate your invincibility star and dive headlong into the After Hours scene with some menacing—depending on your perspective— StreetFighters (though we encourage you to enjoy the various bars and lounges peaceably, practicing the way of the open palm rather than that of the closed fist). (Jade Empire, folks. I know it’s not quite an oldie, but it is certainly a goodie) [28]. Draw inspiration from Tetris as you allow the various stars of the arts and entertainment community to fall snugly into place in your datebook. I’m not sure which shape best befits a local playhouse—perhaps the versatile “z,” which can easily denote comedy or tragedy depending on how the game is going [39]. Try to keep up with Sonic as he burns money (or rings, in his case) at various local stores. There’s a good chance he’ll stop off at a local shoe store—footwear is his trademark, after all—or possibly a jewelry purveyor looking to recover some of those lost rings [47]. Take a relaxing me day with Link as he indulges in a pedicure to give his feet a break from his wandering ways. There’s a good chance it’s not his final stop of the day; he may be taking trusty steed Epona through the car wash [57]. Or Get Out on a nice, non-combative hike with Donkey Kong and Princess … and that snotty little plumber who can’t seem to leave them alone [69]. And get swept up in Community Watch to help keep tabs on your public heroes and villains [75]. Here we go! ASHLEY SCHWELLENBACH MANAGING EDITOR

In-N-Out Burger

Just like bonuses and other secrets hidden in Super Mario Bros. games, In-N-Out features a notso-secret secret menu for those in the know. Not everyone who takes advantage of the easy-on, easy-off Highway 101 location of Atascadero’s Best Restaurant wants to order from the limited menu posted at In-N-Out, featuring hamburgers, cheeseburgers, fries, and shakes. The secret menu also offers extra patties, extra cheese, chopped chiles, mustard-grilled patties, even root beer floats. And don’t forget the popular “animal style,” with grilled onions added to your burger or to your fries. Wonder if Mario knows there’s even a rumored “gorilla style” burger? —Kathy Johnston runner-up: Sylvester ’ s Burgers

How about a create-your-own breakfast omelet? Or a giant Belgian waffle? Are you hearing Pac-Man smacking his lips? Six cuts of steak, an oak pit grill, local king salmon and other seafood, wines by the glass or bottle, a variety of specialty appetizers, fresh salads, desserts … and the adjoining building, housing Mr. Rick’s, regularly provides live music if you need to dance off those calories. —Kathy runner-up: Olde Port Inn BEST CAMBRIA RESTAURANT

BEST MORRO BAY RESTAURANT
Windows on the Water 699 Em ba rc a d E ro, mo r ro bay
Executive Chef Neil Smith feels sorry for Pac-Man, who doesn’t stop to see, smell, or perhaps even taste what he eats, let alone appreciate the view. At Windows on the Water, Smith creates exquisite original art on every plate. The beauty goes beyond skin deep, with the chef focused on using only the finest sustainable, organic, local produce and protein for his edible art. He selects seafood based on the guidelines of the Seafood Watch program of Monterey Bay Aquarium. The meat is humanely raised, such as Hearst Ranch grass-fed free-range beef. And the market-driven menu is printed daily, depending on what’s available. “People like the quality,” says Smith. “And you can’t beat the view.” —Kathy runner-up: Taco Temple BEST NIPOMO RESTAURANT

They’ll learn what the locals know: that the Santa Maria-style Large Spencer at Jocko’s packs a punch! Waca, waca, waca, waca … They can wink at fellow diner, college track and field superstar Jordan Hasay, who names Jocko’s as her favorite local restaurant, too. She always orders the filet mignon. When John “Old Juan” Verdin opened his restaurant 35 years ago, he offered family hospitality, good food, and good service. That philosophy hasn’t changed after all these years, and remains the same now that it’s run by his daughter Eva and his son Adam. According to manager Joseph Morales: “We’ve always focused on good food and good service. We’ve had the same servers and cooks here over 20 years.” Morales started there as a busser and moved on to get experience in managing other restaurants. Six year later, he returned home to be part of Old Juan’s “family,” and he treats guests like family, too, as if they’re visiting the Verdin home. —Kathy Marcks Hardesty runner-up: Rock & Roll Diner BEST PASO ROBLES RESTAURANT

Novo
726 H i gu e r a S t., S LO
If you ask around SLO Town, you’ll find everybody seems to have a different take on why Novo is regularly voted Best SLO Restaurant. The menu is unique, the martinis are tasty, and the atmosphere is simply the best in town. The overwhelming consensus is that there just isn’t any other restaurant like it; it’s hard to pin down. One regular called it “casually upscale, just like SLO.” Maybe that’s why our readers have consistently identified with Novo for the past six years. I’m likely preaching to the choir here, but bring the family for a classy creekside meal in the back patio, or drop in for cocktails and the best people-watching spot in town at the front window. —Matt Fountain runner-up: Ciopinot BEST SANTA MARGARITA RESTAURANT
The Range
22317 e L C a m i n O r e a L , Sa nta m a rga r ita
With its retro Western music and decor, super-friendly staff, and relaxed atmosphere, the Range is quintessentially Santa Margaritan. Stir in chef/owner Jeff Jackson’s creative flair with fresh, local ingredients—from free-range, grass-fed beef to fresh vegetables just barely out of the earth—and it’s no wonder the Range is a top choice. Jeff says he thinks a big draw is the old-school country music from his personal collection, with classic album covers lining the walls and speakers inside and out. He’s so old-school he prefers pinball to video games, but his wife, restaurant manager Lindsay Jackson, is a “fiend for Pac-Man.” The rotund character would be out of luck if he’s looking to gobble up leftovers, though. Even with the plentiful portions at the Range, diners always clean their plates. —Kathy runner-up: The Porch

Ms. Pac-Man would do well to put on her red bow and spend every Saturday enjoying a leisurely alfresco meal at the top pick on Shell Beach Road, Zorro’s. She may be tired of chomping power pellets, but it’s difficult to decide between the delicious grilled cod sandwich, the local favorite (California burger), and the decadent chile rellenos. The menu at Zorro’s Café and Cantina offers a marvelous mix of Mexican and traditional American breakfast, lunch, and dinner entrees. And it seems like they’re open anytime you’re looking for fresh, home-style food. (However, no pac-dots on the menu.) —Wendy runner-up: Lido at Dolphin Bay BEST TEMPLETON RESTAURANT

The small-town Templeton charm beams from McPhee’s Grill, quaintly housed in the oldest (built in 1885) commercial building in town. Chef Ian McPhee dishes up the finest steaks and seafood, plus fresh local produce and ever-changing specials, “depending on what walks in the door” on offer from local farmers. “Pac-Man would gobble up our food,” according to McPhee, who confesses to a continuing passion for planning menus and cooking for his many customers. Locals and visitors alike are appreciative of the fact that the same menu applies at lunchtime and dinnertime, so they can choose a meal of any size, any time. —Kathy runner-up: AJ Spurs

726 H i gu e r a S t., S LO
When Novo owner Robin Covey learned his restaurant once again earned this exclusive category, he respectfully credited his loyal chefs and servers. Like Sonic the hedgehog and his furry posse, Novo’s team easily navigates their way through the tricky, multi-level dining room that’s always jam packed with hungry characters. Most of the staff has been with Covey five years straight. Novo fans love this eatery’s versatile, flavorful menu and wide range of prices that make it affordable for most. “The reason it is so many people’s favorite is that no matter who you are, it’s never pretentious—it’s California relaxed,” Covey said, adding proudly, “Novo has become iconic and part of the SLO experience.” —KMH runner-up: Shalimar
Eureka Burger

When I first saw the signs for Eureka Burger’s impending arrival in downtown SLO, I thought, “Yeah, because we need another burger joint in town.” But even a quick look at the menu reveals this isn’t simply another bun-and-meat delivery system. Their jalapeño burger comes loaded with all the spice you’d expect—plus a fried egg. I want to say that again, in italics: A fried egg. Be careful when you bite into it, ravenously, as I did; the yolk may squirt onto your jeans. Aside from the creative combos (the Catalina Bison Burger comes with bacon-infused jalapeño jam; the LULU Burger boasts a lamb-and-chuck patty with sweet mint aioli), thirsty diners can find rotatinghandle beers chalked up on a wall-sized board and steal-the-glass events. Add some truffle fries, calamari with Thai chili, or a short-rib quesadilla if you still have room. —Ryan Miller runner-up: Sidecar

Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a vegetable in a video game. If I based my life on what games taught me, actually, I’d probably be looking for whole turkeys buried in breakable walls that can save your life. Maybe games aren’t a good basis for nutrition. The Natural Café, on the other hand, does vegetables right, according to all you readers who voted it the Best Vegetarian Fare in SLO County. Elaine Truong and her husband Eric opened Mandarin Gourmet 20 years ago, and they’re still in the same location. But she’s recently put Mandarin Gourmet on Facebook and remodeled the restaurant, two things she wanted to emphasize. More importantly, the restaurant began serving pho about two years ago. Elaine and her husband hoped the new item—a Vietnamese-style soup—would draw in Cal Poly students, but it ended up becoming one of the most popular dishes for locals, which is actually how they like it there. “It’s just like a family,” Elaine says. —Colin runner-up: Golden Gong

“It’s-a me, Mario!” If Mario takes a break from trying to rescue the princess to make a reservation for SLO County’s Best Italian Food at Giuseppe’s, he’ll just have to wait for a table, because they don’t take reservations. Giuseppe DiFronzo has advanced quite a few levels since he started the restaurant as a Cal Poly senior project in 1988. Always devoted to using the best imported and local ingredients for his authentic Italian recipes, he now grows heirloom tomatoes and other vegetables, as well as wine grapes, on his own farm in Arroyo Grande. A wood-burning oven from Italy is used for Giuseppe’s from-scratch bread that’s baked daily, and for the always-popular pizzas. Try something from Palazzo Giuseppe at 1010 Court St. in San Luis Obispo, too! —Kathy runner-up: Rosa ’ s Ristorante Italiano BEST MEDITERRANEAN FOOD
Thai Palace
1015 c Ou R t S t., S LO
I know what you’re thinking, and no, I won’t resort to silly puns like, “It’s to Thai for!” or “You’ll be tongue Thai-ed!” because this place just doesn’t need any spicing up. SLO County residents like their Thai cuisine, and there’s no shortage of places to pick from. But Thai Palace has consistently lead the pack with New Times readers since 2007, and the reasons are as obvious as Ryu’s crush on Chun-Li. If you’re new to Thai, the menu sports plenty of options to start you off right, like the pad Thai noodles. If you fancy yourself as something of a connoisseur, put your money where your mouth is and take on the spicier dishes like pad kee mow noodles, the jumbo prawns, or my favorite, the pad dha calamari. Of course, a spicy dish deserves to be washed down proper with a tall glass of Singha beer. —Matt runner-up: Thai Classic

The SLO location has the sort of faded awning that only well-established local hangouts seem to have; the new location in Arroyo Grande boasts a stylish metal sign hanging over the sidewalk. Both shops welcome diners eager to take a culinary voyage; hungry patrons load up on shawarma of the lamb, beef, or chicken variety; kifta patties; and gyros. In Arroyo Grande, build a combo plate by choosing three tasty items off a list that includes falafel; hummos; garden salad with lamb, beef, chicken, or gyros; and grape leaves, plus grilled veggies, chicken pesto, and angel hair pasta. Or top pitas with three cheeses or zucchini, bell peppers, yellow squash, tomatoes, and feta. Finish off with a sticky-sweet morsel of baklava. Want to bring the Mediterranean to you? Call about catering for crowds of 15 to 1,500. “No kidding!” the eatery’s website says. Just give them 48 hours’ notice. —Ryan runner-up: Petra

What’s that you say? You’ve never seen a grill cook turn an onion into a volcano? You think all Japanese food is served raw? Not so, my friend. The Land of the Rising Sun produces more than delectable slices of seafood. In fact, Yanagi—with locations all over SLO County and one spot in Santa Maria—will cook a meal before your very eyes at its WOW Pismo Beach location. Even if you’re not in the mood for a show with dinner, all Yanagi locations offer an array of cooked Japanese dishes in addition to the sushi and sashimi variety. This isn’t an all-you-can-eat kind of place. They proudly ship their ingredients straight from Japan, and that’s where Sonic and Mario were born, so it’s gotta be good, right? —Colin

Shalimar
2115 B roa d S T., S Lo
“We treat every guest as if they’re coming to our house, not our restaurant,” explains Aasim Sajjad, customer service expert at Shalimar. It’s not a big stretch, since everyone who works in the top choice for Best Indian Restaurant is part of one big, friendly, foodloving family. He says their menu features a hundred choices of authentic Indian and Pakistani food, including tandoori dishes cooked in a traditional clay oven, flavorful curries with exotic spices, and freshly cooked naan bread—all, as Sajjad says, made with “extra love.” Most popular is the $10 Monday night all-you-can-eat buffet, with 15 different dishes to satisfy omnivores and vegans. Don’t miss Shalimar’s $9 lunchtime buffet, another hit with local Indian-food lovers. —Kathy
The Western motif and mounted game at Jocko’s haven’t changed much since Ralph “Jocko” Knotts ran the bar from the early 1900s until 1952. The Knotts family still owns it, and they’ve kept it consistent, from their Santa Maria-style tri-tip to filet mignon. It’s paradise for steak lovers, especially when the meat is paired with their popular pinquito beans. The house favorite is the 30-day-aged Spencer steak; this ribeye outsells every other entrée. The cooks will tell you that the flaming pit of red oak makes their steaks so tasty. This Wild West steakhouse will always draw a crowd of admirers. —KMH runner-up: F. McLintocks BEST TRI-TIP

Woodstock’s pizza is an institution and a beloved fixture in San Luis Obispo. This is probably because there are few true cure-alls like a good slice of pizza. Bad break-up? Cry into some spicy Firebird about it. Get a promotion? Nothing pairs better with a celebratory pint than a Hawaiian pizza. Are the boys at the frat house teasing you about your less-than-six-pack-gut? Get the whole-wheat crust and show them that you can still eat like a college champion and skirt the freshman 15. Woodstock’s is loved by all kinds of folks for its beer selection, arcade games, and flat screens. —Maeva runner-up: Fatte ’ s
Meat lovers crowd Firestone for its world-famous tri-tip. “We buy prime certified beef, the best we can get, and cook it nice and slow to keep it tender,” manager Darnell Harris explained. “We use our housemade seasoning and barbecue sauce, family recipes, and make the sandwich on a garlic-buttered French roll. It’s so good because it’s made with TLC.” Or try the tri-tip cobb salad with lettuce, red onion, tomato, bleu cheese, bacon, and choice of dressing. Boasting generous portions, value-priced foods, and a great patio, Firestone satisfies everyone one from a hungry brute like Donkey Kong to speedy Sonic. —KMH runner-up: F. McLintocks BEST BURGER

Only one thing can satisfy a slayer’s hunger after a long day of battling vampires, hell hounds, and flying Medusa heads with nothing but a heavy, metal whip. It’s called meat, and—newsflash!—it’s delicious. Even folks who never wasted countless hours in Castlevania know that Arroyo Grande Meat Co. is the place to go for all their slaughtering needs. Henry Gonzalez and his small but dedicated crew will process wild game into sausage, steaks, or ground meat, and they’ll cut everything to the customer’s preferred thickness, slicing meat so thin the flavor has nowhere to hide. “Thanks for the honor,” Gonzalez said. “We’re a tiny, little place, but we have some amazing customers and repeat clientele.” —Nick runner-up: New Frontiers Natural Marketplace

Dear Black Sheep: Remember the night I first revealed my undying love for you, under a full moon and the slight influence of alcohol? That wasn’t just the booze talking. It was from the heart, man. And that other time I butt-dialed you from the cab home? Oh, how we laughed! You’ve always been there for me with a well-mixed drink when I’m dry, a Guinness burger when I’m famished, and good company when I’m lonesome. The day... The place ...
Old Cayucos Tavern and Card Room 130 N . OC E A N AV E ., C AY UC OS
Forget the fancy martinis and modern décor. A good bar should cater to simpler pleasures like booze, girls, and gambling—things the Old Cayucos Tavern has in spades. The bar’s about as western as one can get. It’s literally steps from the Pacific Ocean, and the building looks like an old saloon with a false front on the outside and murals of nude playmates on the inside, welcoming patrons to let loose and have a good time. Whether you’re there for the free live music every Friday and Saturday night or you want to try your luck at Texas Hold ’Em every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, the Old Cayucos Tavern is the place to get rowdy. It doesn’t hurt that bartenders like Teddy serve up the brews faster than the guys in Root Beer Tapper (look it up). —Nick

Boasting “the Central Coast’s biggest dance floor,” the Grad packs in revelers with rhythm nearly every night of the week—and even if you’re jumping like Mario, you’re unlikely to head-bump the ceiling. With expert DJs spinning everything from ’60s faves to hot cumbias to the latest club mixes—depending on the night—there’s always plenty of booty-shakin’ going on, and cold beers and well drinks are just a few steps away. College Hump Nights on Wednesdays see the dance floor packed with students getting’ their groove on, while it’s a cowboy and cowgirl line-dancing crowd for Country Nights on Thursdays. If Mario ever does manage to rescue the Princess, or Bowser manages to seduce her into giving up the pipsqueak Italian dude, New Times readers have the perfect venue in mind for their first date: Novo Restaurant and Lounge. The outdoor patio is the perfect place to conjure up a little romance, with trees bedecked in twinkle lights and a creek that might or might not be flowing, depending on the time of year. And if you’re of the “win my stomach to get to my heart” persuasion, Novo boasts locally grown food expertly prepared with a global twist. Recently updated stage lighting, an extended bar for faster service (without higher prices during shows), and remodeled restrooms all enhance the experience. SLO Brew also makes a point of posting extensive calendars of upcoming shows, with advance tickets available at Boo Boo’s. —Kathy RUNNER-UP: Frog and Peach BEST PLACE TO PLAY POOL

Take that, Catherine Ryan Hyde! In your face, Robert Inchausti! How do you like them apples, Wendelin Van Draanen? I rule! And to all you New Times readers, I don’t care how drunk you were when you voted; I love you anyway! What an honor! I guess all those late nights carefully erasing better writers’ names off the ballots and replacing them with my own has finally paid off! I want to thank all the little people, like Vern Troyer and Peter Dinklage, and all the big people, like Roseanne Barr and Wilt Chamberlain, and all the regular-sized people, like Sally Field and Lady Gaga, and the beautiful people, like Charlize Theron and Brad Pitt. Jeff Claassen
774 M ar s h st. (u pstai r s), s LO
“People tell me I should put a sign out,” shrugs Jeff Claassen, who last summer moved the eponymous Claassen Gallery from a street-level storefront space to an unmarked upstairs location across the street. But Claassen—who over the years has become a well-known artist, art supply retailer, gallery owner, and all-around cool dude—seems to enjoy the spot’s relative anonymity. “I’ve been able to focus more on artwork, which is why I opened the gallery in the first place,” he says. Over the years, Claassen has seen his paintings develop into more intricate, detailed pieces, he adds—though cute, graffiti-inspired, droopy-eyed characters remain his trademark. He’s also begun receiving more commissions. “To date, I’ve been commissioned to paint everything from cell phone covers to an antique bathtub to a truck tailgate and other random objects,” he says. “I’m waiting for somebody to commission me to paint their entire car. Or better yet, a zamboni machine.” —Anna Weltner
Farmers’ Markets’ wonderfully eclectic lineup of booths—offering everything from tri-tip, tattoo interpretation services, salvation from the eternal fires of hell, and locally grown produce—is nice and all, but my favorite thing about Farmers’ is electric cellist Marston Smith, who, in full medieval armor, bathed in a pool of eerie purple light, hair whipping in the artificial breeze from a wind machine, regularly conquers—nay, slays!—the intersection of Higuera and Garden with his virtuosity, intensity, and sheer what-the-hell…? factor. That’s just me, though. You may go gaga for the bounce house or get all moony-eyed watching unicyclist and juggler Mark Wilder’s pyrotechnic adventures in pink Spandex. Whatever your fancy, there’s something for everyone on Higuera Street in downtown SLO every Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. —Anna

Jake Schroeder,
Traditional Tattoo 956 FOOth i LL B LVd., s LO
How does it feel to permanently mark someone else’s body for a living? This is one of the first things I ask Traditional Tattoo’s Jake Schroeder. “It’s a total trip,” he replies. “I’ll never stop tattooing. Even if I win the lottery.” Schroeder has worked at Traditional for five years, working up from apprentice—practicing on oranges and willing friends—to one of SLO County’s favorite tattoo artists. “I was taught to take on anything that comes in through the door,” he says. What’s the strangest request that’s ever come in? “I did a cock on some guy’s leg once,” he answers nonchalantly, shaking his head as he produces a photograph of the tattoo in question. “I asked him why, and he said ‘To be different.’” Schroeder won’t stop you from making questionable life choices. But he does do a kick-ass job of creating highly personal, extremely permanent works of body art. —Anna
BEST MOVIE THEATER
Palm Theatre
817 paL M st., s LO
The Palm Theatre should be credited with creating some of the most formative experiences of my life. As a high schooler, the Palm’s Monday night special (all seats, all shows, $5!) fit neatly in my tiny, teenaged budget. I would pedal down to the theater—usually purchasing a water for 10 cents, just for the fun of handing a dime over the counter—and take in foreign or independent flicks like Amelie, Garden State, and The Animation Show. My Palm Theatre habit continued into adulthood with the likes of The U.S. vs. John Lennon; Paris, Je T’aime; Slumdog Millionaire; Let the Right One In; and Midnight in Paris. The Palm, owned and operated by Jim Dee since 1988, solar-powered since 2004, is a San Luis Obispo treasure, and remains one of the best uses of an evening downtown. —Anna

The gallery has played host to artists from around the world, while also highlighting local heroes like David Settino Scott, Mark Bryan, and Barry Goyette. “My aim is to keep the standard high,” said gallery owner Peter Steynberg, who added that his approach has evolved along with the business. Steynberg opened the gallery in 1999 in a restored art deco building, later adding a café and wine bar and incorporating a regular schedule of live entertainment. “From a humble art gallery to what it is today, I’ve never had a master plan,” he shrugs. “I just sort of made it up as I went along.” —Anna runner-up: Just Looking Gallery

“I don’t know anything about magic,” says Rich Ferguson, which is funny considering that his life’s work has been devoted to doing things other people find pretty magical. Ferguson already knows what word you’re thinking of, what card you’re about to choose, and probably has the names of all of your future children in a sealed envelope somewhere. He’s that good. Ferguson calls himself a “mentalist,” referring to the work he does as “mental magic.” It all stems from a curious ability he has to read people’s nonverbal cues with frightening accuracy. Fortunately, Ferguson uses his powers for good, whether he’s entertaining at a party, working with businesses as a creative consultant, or keeping his audience captive during his motivational talks. Part of the reason why gamers prefer a gaming specialty store to an electronics store that just happens to sell games is that they can chat with the employees about which games are a better investment than others. The employees are gamers themselves, and offer good advice and share in friendly geeking-out about upcoming titles and old favorites. Thankfully, GameStop embodies that idea and has a great selection to boot. Used video games are an important part of the gaming selection, and it’s nice to be able to buy them from somewhere. On the other side of the spectrum, release parties and download events occur frequently and are a great time. GameStop offers all of this and more. —Chris

With a vast selection of locally grown blossoms and imported exotics from the tropics, Open Air Flowers was once again voted the best in the kingdom. They’ve been in town for 25 years, and these petal peddlers know what they’re doing. Whether you want to woo your lady with a rose, decorate an entire wedding, or whip up a last-minute bouquet before tying the knot at the courthouse across the street, they’ve got flowers for everything—except shooting fireballs at duck turtles. That kind of nonsense only happens in video games. “We couldn’t do it without our wonderful staff,” said Leslie Weber, who owns the shop with her husband Vance. “Everyone who works here genuinely loves each other and cares for this community.” —Nick
If you’ve spent any time downtown, you’ve no doubt caught sight of a dashing, bespectacled man in a handsome shirt and tie, and … shorts! That’s Dr. Schultz, who for nearly 30 years has been helping folks correct their vision and find some stylish specs. His store, which he and his wife Laurie opened 20 years ago, feels like an art gallery, and the brands they carry are as beautiful and unique as fine paintings and sculpture. Oliver Peoples? Check! L.A. Eyeworks? You bet! Chrome Hearts? Damn straight! Alain Mikli? Mmm, hmm! You’ll look like a million bucks, or like you scored a million points! —Glen

Jason Ashley’s grandfather, Ken Porche, opened Charles Shoes 45 years ago. Now Ashley is the assistant manager, but the store’s remained in the same downtown SLO location where it opened. If you’re some sort of free-spirited liberal arts major, this isn’t the store for you. All right, it’s for you, too, but Charles Shoes tries to cater to customers outside just the collegiate variety. It’s an old-fashioned kind of place where the clerks will help you put on your shoes. Their focus is comfort, but Charles Shoes has also dipped into fashionable footwear. All I care about, though, is whether they have Sonic’s powerup speed shoes? Actually, never mind. Those things were always a major pain to control. —Colin

When I was first wooing my fiancée, I knew I had to find something special, something she’d love and cherish, which is why I headed straight for Kevin Main. Not only does Kevin have a full-scale design studio on hand, but he also has exclusive contracts with incredible designers such as Alex Sepkus, Bree Richey, and Marco Bicego. He’s come a long way from his one-man silversmith shop in Morro Bay, and his Higuera Street store recently had a makeover. It’s as beautiful as the jewelry it contains! And the friendly staff is there to find the perfect choice for you. I settled on a pair of earrings and a necklace by Thomas Mann, which obviously had the desired effect. Legends tell us that before characters made of light killed each other on TV monitors, there were toys. Unlike video games, these Tangible Objects for Youthful Stimulation (TOYS) required their users to engage a now vestigial section of the human brain, something ancient scrolls called the “imagination.” Modern scientists dispute its relevance, but the toys can be seen, purchased, and even played with at SLO’s best relic shop, Tom’s Toys, a two-storied store whose walls are brimming with stuffed animals, action figures, building blocks, science kits, board games, crafts, castles, and more. “There’s something here for everyone,” said manager Carlos Macias. “People should have fun. Remember those commercials that used a laid-back skater dude to represent Apple computers and a stodgy, bespectacled square to characterize PCs? Well, if that commercial were localized to SLO and repackaged with an old-school video game theme, the big box shops would be represented by the cold and sterile Dr. Robotnik while Sonic the Hedgehog played the part of Mac Superstore, a repair shop with a dizzyingly fast turn-around time and pockets full of gold rings forked over from loyal locals. Foiling Dr. Robotnik’s plans for world take-over and enslavement of the animal kingdom is stressful business—not to mention hard on the joints. If springing through trees while carrying countless rings doesn’t wear you out, well, you’re probably not human. But if it does, New Times readers recommend Sycamore Mineral Springs for a massage that will work out all the kinks, leaving you limber and ready to race through new worlds.
Well, consarnit, SLO County! What’s a New Times reporter got to do for a little love around here? For the last dozen years (but who’s counting?) KSBY has spanked us where it hurts most. As the accolades flow elsewhere and the runner-up certificates pile up in our editorial department, we writers can’t help but wonder what those slick broadcasters have that we don’t. Sure, they’re on TV, they’re better looking, and every now and again rainbows and unicorns blast out of their hilltop studio and cure famine and disease. And their news is pretty newsy, I guess. So I took my gripe to the station’s newsroom director, Doug Barden, who had the gumption to be totally cool and humble. “I’ve never worked in a market where a TV station has as much support from the community as we do here.

Thanks
To all of our customers for voting us one of your favorite bike shops! ALWAYS #1 IN SOUTH COUNTY
In 1975, Ira bought the bike shop that he had been working in since he was 12 years old. Back then it was known as Joyce Cycle Center. which he renamed it Ira’s Bike Shop.
The 1,100-square foot store was always filled to the brim with bicycles, stacks of helmets, boxes of water bottles, & full of passion & love for what he was doing & the people he was doing it for. A fixture in the community, Ira had become an Eagle Scout in 1969 & continued to serve as a Scout Master until 2010. He gave back to the community again & again in so many ways, whether it be with his time or the donations he made.
Ira was like family to many & he will be missed by everyone he touched & every bicycle he fixed. So Long Ira, I enjoyed working with you the past 19 years & thank you for being one of the good guys.

The more time you spend pretending to be a hero, the less you look like one. Every once in a while, it’s healthiest to drop the sticks, get off the couch, and head to the gym, an experience that can be downright terrifying for pale-skinned chubbos. Luckily, business owners Suzanne Smith and Kristin Alexander have created an environment that’s open and inviting to first-time exercisers, families, and athletes alike. Instead of weights and treadmills, the Edge Fitness Studio offers small aerobics classes of varying styles that will tone any body type. Also, there are no membership fees. A character in the 1989 classic video game Zero Wing famously said, “All your base are belong to us.” There are many theories as to that cryptic line’s meaning, but for the purposes of this write-up, I’m going to assume he was talking about home construction. Just replace “base” with “home” and you’ve got one hell of a marketing pitch. You’re welcome, Shea Homes—not that you need the help. In today’s economy, it seems nothing short of miraculous to still be building homes, let alone be voted as Best Construction Company. With operations throughout California, and indeed the country, Shea Homes—builders of Trilogy at Monarch Dunes—seems to have a special love of the Central Coast, with its “unique cultural flavor that attracts artists, intellectuals, and those that wish to escape the hustle and bustle of big metropolitan areas.” —Colin

Two clean-cut brothers who worked their way to the top and now socialize with bonafide princesses? I know what you’re thinking: I must be referring to Mario, Luigi, and that pinkest of nobles—Peach. But that description belongs equally to Aaron and Evan Steed, who started Meathead Movers in 1997 and opened two new branches faster than Mario conquering castles. Their most recent venture—which would certainly make the Italian plumbers proud—is Princess Packers, the brainchild of Aaron’s wife Erin, which provides assistance with the delicate art of packing up your treasures before the hunky student-athletes take over on moving day. But they’ve got more than gold coins on the brain; for each box packed by the handy princesses, Meathead Movers donates $1 to The Cinderella Fund, an organization that gives grants to children whose families are enduring financial hardships. Woods Humane Society
Back in 2009, the San Luis Obispo City Council members said, “Yeah. Yeah. Let’s do this,” giving a collective nod that welcomed a double-decker behemoth to city streets. The idea was to bring in a bus so big, no one would again be left at a stop, unable to board a crowded vehicle just to get to class at Cal Poly or whathave-you. Leaders dished out $850,000 from a federal grant and state agencies, then had to make some adjustments to the lowerhanging obstacles over local roads. About 18,000 more stimulus dollars went into tweaking a garage door to allow the bus access. And more went into investing in a way to wash the thing’s huge body. City leaders said they were happy with the bus in late 2010, citing an increase in ridership, but locals apparently aren’t as smitten with the tower of public transportation. —Ryan

Dedicated to opening local homes and hearts to unwanted pets, Woods Humane Society has provided humane care for unwanted animals for more than 50 years. With a staff of 30, and hundreds of animal-loving volunteers, “the passion at Woods is like nothing else,” says executive director Cory Karpin. Funds donated by the community have been used recently to hire the organization’s first fulltime veterinarian for spay/neuter and animal health, and to open an onsite industrial laundry. Woods has one of the country’s highest placement rates for homeless pets. “We’re like the video puzzle game Tetris,” says Karpin, “always looking for a match, for a permanent lifetime fit.” —Kathy

What happened most recently in the ongoing saga of what to do with Los Osos residents’ waste? Well, a lot—but who cares? It’s the sewer! BEST ANNOYING PUBLIC FIGURE
SLO County Supervisor Adam Hill How does the man voted Best Annoying Public Figure stack up against the iconic figure we love to hate, the video game villain? Hill’s favorite video game villain of all time is Donkey Kong, “because he was so misunderstood.” If he had to choose a pseudonym under which he would commit his nefarious deeds, he would go by “Rabbi Adam” and his catchphrase would be “Don’t make me go New Jersey on you!” (Please be sure to read that in your very best Jersey accent.) His signature move? “Death stare intermittently interrupted by oversalivated flinching.” But any video game villain worth his evil cape knows that he needs henchmen, underlings to carry out tasks and make clever wisecracks about the good guys. For that Hill has: Bruce Gibson. “I call in Bruce Gibson to do my dirty work,” Hill explained. “The dude is versed in all the martial arts and was once a jazzercise instructor.” But the true test of any video game villain: Has Hill ever kidnapped a princess? “Yes and no. The great late beloved Princess Di and I had a fling in the late ’80s and the British tabloids called me nasty names and accused me of every untreatable sin.” Sounds like Hill might give Donkey Kong a run for his bananas. —Ashley RUNNER UP: San Luis Obispo Mayor Jan Marx

schools/education SLO County residents put almost $200 million into local schools through their property taxes, with help from tax funds from the state. We’re looking at serious chunks of public change dropped on the more than 34,000 students who enjoy K-12 education in the county. Student performance comes in above the state average, according to the county’s 2011 annual education report. Superintendent Julian Crocker said in a letter that the county wants to prepare students to take the next step toward a productive career, to participate as a citizen in our democracy, and to be life-long learners. The report notes, however, that California is 46th in the nation in spending per student, “and the future looks dim.” Fortunately, New Times readers believe what public dollars do go toward education are well spent. —Ryan RUNNER UP: state parks BEST ELECTED OFFICIAL
SLO County Sheriff Ian Parkinson Sheriff Ian Parkinson really is a dreamboat, isn’t he? If he weren’t a cop, Parkinson would probably be off rescuing princesses. But on a recent afternoon, he was plopped into a chair on the patio of a local café, reading the paper, sipping coffee, and greeting just about everyone who walked by. You also need to picture the man in his sheriff uniform, which he’s worn proudly since his first day on the job. And he’s so freaking goody-goody it’s borderline nauseating. The man doesn’t even jaywalk. While he’s happy you all seem to like him—you really like him—he says that was never one of his goals. Parkinson explained that he just tries to do the right thing, whether people like him or not. But he likes that you like him. “You feel like you must be doing something right,” he said. —Colin RUNNER UP: Congresswoman Lois Capps
