A WORD FROM OUR FAIRPARK INTERIM CEO… I would like to take this opportunity to personally invite you to create your own “Blue Ribbon Memories” at the 2014 Santa Barbara County Fair, July 9-13 at the Santa Maria Fairpark. This year’s new attractions are sure to create lasting memories for the whole family, from Sea Lion Splash with a live sea lion show, Kids Celebration Game Show, and Nascar Experience both interactive activities, to Pharaoh’s Egyptian Attraction Wildlife Exhibit with hands on activities and stage show, there is something new for everyone. Of course, all the fair favorite attractions are back as well, like Cowboy Ken’s Trackless Train, The Great American Petting Zoo & Pony Rides, Hypnotist Tina Marie, Community Entertainment and all the great art and exhibits. And let’s not forget the KCOY Main Stage Entertainment with Morris Day & the Time, Wynonna & The Big Noise, Kansas and Rodney Adkins. We at the Santa Maria Fairpark are constantly striving to improve our facility and create a safe, fun and family oriented environment for community and guests. I would also like to take this time to thank the wonderful staff of the Santa Maria Fairpark, for their pride and dedication to Fairpark and all the year round events it hosts. We look forward to helping you create “Blue Ribbon Memories” at the 2014 Santa Barbara County Fair.

Fred Chamberlin 2014 Livestock Person of the Year
Fred Chamberlin learned the essentials of running a successful ranch while being raised on the Ted Chamberlin Ranch in Los Olivos, California. From the day Ted and Allie brought Fred home from the hospital in Santa Barbara, ranching was not simply a job; it was their way of life. While in grammar school, Fred’s mother insisted that he and his brother get new suits and attend the State Cattlemen’s Convention in Santa Barbara. His involvement in the cattle industry has spanned his entire life. The Ted Chamberlin Ranch was established in 1929 and has been a family operation for over 85 years. Fred attended Los Olivos Grammar School, received his driver’s license at the tender age of 14 and drove himself to high school in Santa Ynez in order to complete his primary education. He chuckles as he remembered his experiences at the Santa Barbara County Fair as a child. He exhibited steers in the market beef show from 19541958. At that time, Fred along with many other 4-H and FFA boys would stay on the fairgrounds in the dormitory above the “brand new beef barn” (now known as the north swine barn) supervised by Santa Ynez FFA Advisor Pop Stockton. And according to him, if you really wanted to get some sleep, you were better off bedding down in the stock trailer. Although Fred doesn’t recall a lot of Blue Ribbon Memories from the Santa Barbara County Fair, he and his siblings enjoyed themselves which is evident in the photos of them with their polled Hereford steers that still hang on the wall in the ranch office. Upon graduating from high school, Fred attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for a short time before enlisting in the military in November 1961. He completed his service to our country in June 1970. With a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from Colorado State University and a Master’s in Electrical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University in Maryland, he moved to the Santa Cruz Mountains and put his skills to work in the Silicon Valley. While in the Bay Area, he worked on many exciting projects for a company that would later become TRW. When his father passed away in 1978, Fred began making the trip to the Santa Ynez Valley every other weekend to keep
up on the accounting responsibilities of the ranch while his brother, Willy continued to run the cattle operation. In January of 1992, Fred moved home to take on the management of the Ted Chamberlin Ranch and continues to oversee the family ranch today. When he is not working in his office, you may find him enjoying the ranch from the driver’s seat of a carriage pulled by a team of mules. Fred has served this area on various land use and water committees and is an advocate for the rights of ranches to continue running cattle. He sat on the Santa Barbara County Cattlemen’s board of directors for a number of years and is currently serving on the Santa Barbara County Farm Bureau Board of Directors. He is very active politically on both state and local levels. In his position as Second Vice President of the California Cattlemen’s Association Fred travels the state promoting and protecting the beef industry. His knowledge and experience makes him an invaluable asset to the Santa Barbara County ranching community.
James Rey Ontiveros 2014 Farmer of the Year
Some might use the word “visionary” or “forward thinking” to describe what sets this year’s winner apart from the others. That would be true, but the vision stems from an old-world approach. James Ontiveros is a ninth generation resident with roots tracing back to 1781, when Josef Ontiveros rode into Alta California and received a Mexican Land Grant. The son of Mark & Louise Ontiveros, James attended local schools, graduating from Righetti High School. While at Righetti, James was involved in FFA, serving as President for two terms. James also served on the Santa Barbara County Junior Fair Board. Since the Ontiveros families were cattlemen historically, James also participated in high school & college rodeo as a team roper and helped on the family ranch. After graduating from Righetti, he went to Cal Poly to rodeo and started out in the Pre-Vet program. It wasn’t long until he realized that was not where his passion and interests were. It was during summers spent at the lake that James was inspired. The Ontiveros family spent time at the lake with the Iwaskos and Wills. While it was typical for

the boys to enjoy a beer or two, the parents would gather in the evening to create gourmet meals, paired with really good wine. It was on one of those occasions that James fi rst tasted a Lane Tanner Pinot and he was hooked. In 1997, at the ripe age of 23, and while still at Cal Poly, James approached his parents and told them he would like to plant a vineyard on their property. He planted eight acres of Pinot Noir plating eight pinot clones and eight root stocks, and using an Old World technique known as “seleccion masal” and dry farming. The Alta Maria Vineyards were formed. After graduating from Cal Poly, James went to work and continued building his knowledge and his passion. James worked with Kendell-Jackson through the Central Coast, with Gallo-Sonoma in the North Coast as well as Sonoma and the Russian River, until he finally went to work for the Miller family as Director of Sales & Marketing. It was here that James got to over-see wine services on the property his great, great, great, great grandfather, Juan Pacifico Ontiveros had built the adobe on their original land grant. James joined forces with Paul Wilkins, winemaker and long-time friend, to start producing Alta Maria wines. With James’ knowledge of where to find the best grapes coupled with Paul’s unique winemaking style, their wines were a great success. “Alta Maria” remains a vineyard specific, while their “Native9” and Paul’s “Autonom” labels are regional from the Santa Maria Valley AVA. With Paul’s Rhonestyle background, they have tried different varietals, but are best known for their Pinot and Chardonnay wines. While other wine makers may aim to make their wines consistent, in the case of wines from Alta Maria Vineyards, the vintages speak for themselves. James has been referred to as a “Vineyard-ist” and when asked if he considers himself to be more of a farmer or a winemaker, he says that he is really both; having knowledge of the grapes from the dirt up and through to production. James is easy to talk to because he has such a great background in local history and knowledge of wines. James explains that most conversations using begin when someone asks him something about one of those two areas; his passion for both is evident. James was a graduate of Ag Leadership Class 31. He still maintains his cowboy roots going on rides annually, including Rancho Vistadores out of Santa Ynez, the Portola ride in San Juan Capistrano, and the Charlie Russell ride in Montana. James and Paul finally opened their tasting room in Los Olivos in 2011 and in 2012 PDWR (Purely Domestic Wine Report) named Alta Maria Winery, the Winery of the Year. In 2010, James married Kristen Buttery and he joking says he had to go outside the county to find a girl he wasn’t related to. On November 13, 2013, they welcomed paternal twins into their lives. Zane Rey and Lauren Grace represent the 10 th generation for the Ontiveros family here in Santa Maria.

Rancho Harvest employs approximately 2,500 workers for 25 different farms at different locations throughout the State of California. Jesse came to this country when he was 13 years old. His parents worked as
migrant laborers harvesting crops in Yuma Arizona, Porterville, Orange County and Santa Maria. Jesse began working full time in agriculture in the Santa Maria Valley when he was 17 years old. He worked for 10 years at Tani Farms harvesting iceberg lettuce and during that time worked his way up to become a lettuce crew foreman. During that period Jesse built a home in Nipomo with the help of People’s Self-Help Housing. Tani Farms managers Lew Deney and Joe Prandini befriended Jesse and moved him into a management position as a lettuce wrap machine supervisor. In 1983, Jesse decided to start his own business as a farm labor contractor. He saw that harvesting had switched from the packing sheds to field packing and offered “custom harvesting.” Jesse recalls filling out his first farm labor contractor license application at the dining room table of friend and long-time associate Kai Francisco. It was local farmer Roy Killgore who took a chance on Jesse by contracting a crew of 8 to transplant Caulifl ower. After a few weeks Joe Jorge gave him the opportunity to do some broccoli harvest. After that the business expanded over the years. Jesse credits the success of Rancho Harvest with treating his workers and the farmers who contract for his services fairly thus earning their respect. He has been able to attract and retain workers by paying them what they deserve and earning their trust. Jesse enjoys working in agriculture because of the diversity of people and because every day is different. There are opportunities in agriculture to advance if you are willing to work hard and give it your all. Jesse currently serves as the greater community Board member at the Mission Hope Cancer Center and in the past he also served on the foundation board at the Marian Regional Medical Center. Jesse spends time attempting to restore a 1969 Chevrolet Nova which he fondly remembers was his first car. The success of Rancho Harvest is not without the support of Rosa his wife of 28 years his children and family members including the many employees currently working at Rancho Harvest as well as past employees that also have contributed to the success of Rancho Harvest.

Smith Electric Service Air Conditioning Repair Contractor Promotes the Value of Regular Maintenance of Heating Air Equipment Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (a.k.a. HVAC) equipment is essential to providing a comfortable lifestyle and working environment in the Central Coast area. It is essential that you maintain your air conditioner, heat pump, and furnace on a regular basis to prevent breakdowns and to manage costly utility bills. Smith reminds homeowners that proper maintenance of an air conditioner, heat pump, or furnace is more than simply keeping it clean. You must have a service technician with the necessary skill set to inspect the electrical components, motors, and belts to make sure your unit will make it through the upcoming heating or cooling season.
