master cow-calf operation, largely from horseback, on the Walking R Ranch at the base of the Sierra Madre Mountains in the Cuyama Valley. The ongoing drought has reduced his herd from a high of 400 mother cows to the present 150 head. Managing stock-water and rotating cows to good grass lands keep Fred and his long-time friend and helper, the cowboy poet Dick Gibford, quite busy. Fred was born in 1933 and in 1944 his father, Juan Reyes and uncle, Eugene Wegis, bought the Walking R Ranch. Unfortunately, tragedy struck the family with Fred’s father passing away when Fred was just 15. Fred understood his new role and he and his hard-working mother, Gertrude took over the cattle operations. After graduating from Maricopa High School, Fred attended Cal Poly studying Animal Husbandry and achieving a certificate in Horseshoeing. In 1955 Fred volunteered for the draft and went into the Army for 2 years and met his future wife, Jean while stationed in Virginia where they both worked in intelligence and security. Jean’s first thought when she inspected the ranch was, “This will be an adventure!”. And an adventure it has been. Electrical power arrived to the ranch in 1969 and life was looking up…. Fred and Jean will celebrate 58 years of marriage this September. Fred and Jean raised two daughters, Juanice and Melanie, on the remote ranch. Melanie lives in Santa Maria and Juanice lives with her husband, John in Washington state. Growing up, both daughters were active in showing livestock at the Santa Barbara County Fair. Fred himself showed livestock in those early days, one year raising and showing not one but three Champion Steers; one at the Santa Barbara County Fair, one at the Cow Palace, and one at the Santa Barbara Expo.
Fred was the first to commercially bring Brangus and Beefmasters into the Cuyama Valley. For over 10 years Fred also raised pure-bred Corriente cattle which were marketed to roping enthusiasts. He their long-standing help to the community and the loved raising the Corriente cattle, but keeping the Santa Barbara County Fair.. pure-bred lines intact was difficult with open range filled with other breeds. griculture is at the heart of any county fair. We’re proud to display locally grown crops and ag exhibits that tell the agricultural story of our community. In the Agriculture Pavilion you’ll also discover youthcreated projects, and if you see something you like, you can even bid on the project and take it home. It’s a fantastic opportunity to support local youth while taking home a skillfully handcrafted item.

reativity abounds on the Central Coast. From jewelry making, to photography, to baking, you can bet there’s a local turning out some impressive finished handmade goods. And it’s all on display at the Santa Barbara County Fair in the Arts Pavilion. Browse the results of some seriously talented community members, and maybe get some ideas for your own creative endeavors. You may even see an artist demonstrating their craft. Whether it’s detailed quilts, impressive place settings, or even intricate origami, you’ll find it on display at the fair.

New Attractions
Chicken Rider
(Strolling Grounds Entertainment)
What can make the fun at the fair even better? Adding a cowboy riding a giant chicken, of course. But there’s no clucking around here, this is serious funny business. Zambini Brothers stilt walking puppeteers will give you plenty of laughs along with some great photo opportunities. Be sure to say “howdy,” or maybe “bwack!” when you see the Chicken Rider strolling the grounds throughout the fair
DockDogs, Inc.
(Six Competitions Daily – located directly inside Plaza Gate)
There is no way a person can’t be happy when dogs are jumping, diving, and splashing into a pool of water. See if you don’t smile watching DockDogs, the world’s premier canine aquatics competition! Watching these dogs enthusiastically compete for the best dive will bring joy to kids and adults alike.
Something Ridiculous (Strolling Grounds Entertainment)
Is there anything more ridiculous than two grown men in superhero costumes sitting atop a 10-ft. unicycle and juggling? Suspend your sense of reason for a little while and give in to the fun and zany antics of Something Ridiculous. This energetic juggling comedy show will have you laughing, while keeping you in awe as they quickly progress to juggling more astounding-and dangerous-objects.
Wizards Challenge with Enchanted Forest Animals (Located in the Discovery Pavilion)
When you mix animals and science fun is sure to result. Get “edutained” on wild and exotic animals with Pacific Animal Productions animal show. Learn about unusual animals like bearded dragons, legless lizards, chinchillas, owls and more. Kids can get a little more hands on with the Wizards Challenge interactive exhibit. Play an enchanted organ, test your strength with a grip challenge, try on a new voice with the voice morphing experiment or participate in many other fun activities.
