his year’s Soundcheck is even more packed with listings than last year: more performers, more music teachers, more businesses, venues, and festivals. It’s your allaccess guide to all things music on the Central Coast. Whether you live in Paso Robles or Santa Maria, you’ll find everything you need to select a wedding band, rent equipment, take some voice lessons, get a gig, or repair a guitar. In addition to the listings, you can read a brief account of the Central Coast’s rich musical history, where you’ll meet the area’s oldest continuously working musician, a surf guitar god, and a punk queen. At the end of the story, I invite you to send me your vintage photos and written recollections of our music history [8]. See more photos online at newtimesslo.com. sk any local music fan who’s been around for awhile, and they’ll have stories to tell about SLO County’s rich and varied music scene. For instance, most everyone has heard of the SLO County Band, which has been playing continuously for more than 135 years, starting first as the SLO Military Band founded in 1874 before changing its name in 1881. But folks have more personal stories as well, stories about USO shows at Camp San Luis or Camp Roberts, stories about family bands and annual public gatherings at places like Pozo Saloon or Madonna Inn. While it’s not possible to offer a thorough account of SLO’s musical history in these pages, Soundcheck picked the brains of a few people closely tied to the local music scene and pieced together some interesting moments in the county’s musical history.

found out the point of the audition was the $50, but I got in and the next Sunday was my first gig at the Morman Church, which is now the Springfield Baptist Church. I played with a band for three hours and came home with $10, and then I played virtually every Friday and Saturday nigh for the rest of the year.” He was just 14 when he responded to an ad to play with Bob Calloway’s band. “It was a territory band, and I don’t think they realized how young I was when they hired me, but we toured for a month and when I came back I started my sophomore year at SLO High. I did that every summer until I graduated in 1949.” Pierce recalls all the old places like the Elmo Theater, Motel Inn, the Anderson Hotel when they had music every night, a

place called Blackie’s on Foothill, and the Log Cabin on Broad. One of the biggest changes to the local music scene was the fading power of Local 305. Union members made $10 for three hours or $12 for four, and it wasn’t too long before Pierce’s music career was bringing in more money than his father’s salesman job. “You could actually make a living in the old days,” said Pierce, who still plays three or four times a month in SLO, often leading his own project, The JP Jazz Band. “I don’t think you could today.” By the way, Jack Pierce eventually got his chance to play with Woody Herman. “When I finally got around to playing with him, he was three days older than dirt,” Pierce quipped. “He shuffled out onto stage, stooped over, but when the band PHOTO COURTESY OF JACK PIERCE

The old timer Jack Pierce is 78 years old and has been playing in SLO County since 1946 when he moved here as a junior high student. He recalled his initiation into music. “Back in those days they had honestto-God, real live radio programs, and I was probably 12 years old when I heard Woody Herman playing ‘Blue Flame,’” Pierce recalled. “Well, I ran and grabbed my mom and pulled her to the radio and said, ‘That’s what I want to do.’” Pierce soon learned to play clarinet, sax, and flute, and after his family moved to SLO from Santa Cruz, he convinced his father to let him audition for the musicians union, Local 305. “It cost $50 to join the union, which was a lot of money in those days, and I quickly

began to play, he rose to 6 feet tall and just came alive. He was an interesting guy. I found out that he took his first gold record and melted it down into a doorknocker. It was still on his house when he died.”

The aging surf god Whether or not you believe Merrell Fankhauser’s song “Wipe Out!” provided the basis for The Surfaris hit single of the same name, there’s no question he’s left an indelible mark on popular music. His songs with bands such as The Impacts, Exiles, Fapardokly, HMS Bounty, FankhauserCassidy Band, and MU have continued to be picked up for inclusion on oldies compilations. Now in his sixth decade of performing, he hosts a syndicated TV show that runs in California and Hawaii and performs regularly around the area. Back in 1960, he got his start playing locally in theaters between double features and at talent shows. The era of Local 305 and union gigs was waning, and rock’n’roll was on the rise. In addition to The Impacts, the area’s other big surf act was The Sentinals, known for their Latin tinge. The band’s drummer, John Barbata, went on to play with The Turtles and Jefferson Starship. Fankhauser also remembers a surf and R&B band called The Biscaynes, in which his friend Bill Todd played. “They had only had a few rare recordings on surf compilation LP’s,” he recalled. “Bill later joined me in 1967 in Fapardokly and in 1968 in HMS Bounty.” The big place to play in those days was the Rose Garden Ballroom (now Pancho’s Surf Shop), which was the site of The Impacts reunion concert in 1989. The group recorded three reunion CDs, the last one

released in 1998. “I remember another old club that was in Pismo Beach,” Fankhauser said. “It was called The Cove on Price Street, and I believe it was built in the ‘50s. It was really cool. The outside and inside was made of Gunite or ripple plaster of some sort and looked exactly like a beach cave or something. The inside even had stalactites coming down from the ceiling, and the stage was inset in the wall like an underwater grotto. It had the longest aquarium I’ve ever seen behind the bar. “My band Fapardokly was formed there in 1967 when I moved back to the Central Coast from the desert. We played there for about a year and had an LP of the same title released near the end of ‘67 on UIP records. It’s now a valued collectors item fetching $1,000 for the original still sealed! “I remember one night a motorcycle gang called Satans Slaves from Porterville came in and took over and made us play a song they liked over and over for 30 minutes! Quite a few local bands played there. Fapardokly was the house band until we moved to Hollywood in ‘68 and got a deal with Uni Records and changed our name to HMS Bounty. Both albums now on CD are available on Sundazed Records NY. Another page in the Central Coast music history that will eventually be in my autobiography!”

Punk hits the Central Coast! SLO County still felt like a series of rural cowtowns in the late ‘70s, which is when I moved here from Wisconsin as a sophomore at SLO High. The premiere club in SLO in those days was The Dark Room, a long, narrow, dingy, hole-in-the-wall that Buena Tavola now occupies. It became the site of dozens of punk shows, but according to Madelyn “Lucymad” Ropner, the first punk show in SLO County happened at Harry’s in Pismo Beach when her band Public Enema played on April 2, 1978. Ropner went on to star as lead singer in a number of notable SLO punk outfits, including Slammer, The Flyz, and AK-47, which featured a young Sal Garza on drums. Garza went on to play with the art rock band Downy Mildew as a violinist and continues to work as a session man and perform with symphonies and chamber ensembles. By the late-‘70s, the Anderson Hotel had become a drug den filled with heroin addicts and losers, which made it a natural magnet for punk rockers. Likewise, the Park Hotel by the train station was populated by ne’er-do-wells and ruffians. Both hotels featured regular music, and so did the Avila Yacht Club … until one fateful night. “Rugby and football players used to show up and beat up the punks,” recalled Ropner, who went on to explain how a toilet was ripped from the floor during a melee. “No one could play there again for years.” She also remembered a famous Dark Room incident when her band was playing. “Charlie, our drummer, got up and was standing and playing the drums, but when he went to sit down, he missed the throne and went through the plate glass window behind the stage. I ran up and pulled the glass from his hands, and he went back in and kept playing. It took 45 minutes before the ambulance came. There was blood everywhere!”

FRESH FACED KID Merrell Fankhauser plays between a double feature at the Santa Maria theater in 1961

Ropner eventually left SLO Town for England, where she lived for a decade before returning in 1995. “The scene got too crazy,” she recalled. “Everyone was on a drugs. It killed it.”

Misty watercolor memories I used to slip in the back of the Dark Room and watch Al Milan and the Robots. Milan cooked burgers in the club when he wasn’t playing, and he recorded two sweet rock albums that are still somewhere in my record collection. The Dark Room was also the first place I saw The Trees of Mystery,

and indelible experience. Bob Whiteford, who went on to own Insomniac Video and now hosts the KCBX radio program Take Two with Plam Theater owner Jim Dee, was the band’s emcee, and with his thick New York accent and off-color jokes, Trees shows also felt like a strange combination of a Poconos comedy show and a Vegas nightclub act. Around this time—the mid-‘80s—The Ripsters and Bingo Nite were heading a roots rock and rockabilly revival, and soon DK’s West Indies Bar took the mantel from The Dark Room as the place to play. I went to work

9

there as a bouncer in 1988 or so, becoming a bartender and then the night manager. It was a wild ride, and soon the club became known for reggae acts, blues acts, rock bands, and even weird stuff like Sun Ra. Rock Steady Posse and Spencer the Gardner were favorites, but Flock of Seagulls played there, as did acts like The Beat Farmers, The Paladins, Buddy Guy, Albert King, Koko Taylor, Chris Isaak, and the list goes on. Back then, the city wasn’t much on enforcing cabaret licenses, so every little hole in the wall had live music: Club 781, Osos Street Subs, Sebastians (now Native Lounge), the basement of Brubeck’s (now Novo). Meanwhile, The SLO Brewing Company opened its doors and started a head-tohead competition with DK’s, which was the best thing to happen to the local music scene in ages. Of course, up on the hill at the south entrance to the city, a club whose name changed more often than Elizabeth Taylor changed husbands began its run: The Hobnob, Yancy McFadden’s, The Spirit, and finally Loco Ranchero, where I saw Beck and The Muffs before they went big. I guess the point is, SLO County’s always had a rich music scene. It’s a story that continues to be written, now by the bands and musicians listed in the publication in your hands. Do you have old photos and stories about our music history? If so, send them to soundcheck@newtimesslo.com. Over the next year, we’ll work on archiving these into a living, digital history of the SLO music scene. In the mean time, rock on, SLO! S✔ Glen Starkey is still living the dream. Purewater Construction Band

Red Eye Junction (Classic

The Purewater Construction Band is made up of Ben Turner on guitar and vocals, Jack urner on drums, and Dylan Theobald on bass and guitar. The music created by this band can be described as garage rock with a touch of Wyoming twang. Many songs are humorous and based off of personal experiences.

If you like your country music steeped in the sounds of Bakersfield and honky-tonk that reeks with the aroma of beer and sawdust rather than hair mousse and celebrity fragrances, then REJ’s your cup of shine. It’s the music of Saturdaynight sinning and Sunday-morning salvation. Red Eye Junction are the new heroes of honky-tonk. They also won two New Times Music Awards in 2009. Yee haw!

t’s a brave new world. Digital music has affected the industry in far-reaching ways: CD sales are in the toilet, piracy is through the roof, and many bands now depend exclusively on the Internet to distribute their music. While intellectual property rights advocates lament some of these changes—namely piracy—many environmentalists applaud the demise of wasteful, polluting, plastics-based CD packaging. Yet demand for physical product still exists, so in a bid for survival, many CD duplication companies have begun to offer ecologically responsibly packaging. One of the best is located in Paso Robles. Founded in Santa Monica in 2002 and relocating to Paso in 2008, Kufala offers packaging made of 100 percent recycled and eco-friendly materials. The company can do

100- to 200-count CD duplication with a quick one-day turnaround or duplicate thousands. In fact, it’s the exclusive manufacturer of the $400 Pearl Jam Official 2009 World Tour box set, which includes live recordings of every concert. “It might be more environmentally friendly not to release CDs,” admits Kufala President Brady Lahr, “and I guess that’s the only bright spot in the decline of CD sales—less waste— but there will always be demand for physical goods, and we just try to provide it in a format that has the least amount of impact on the environment.” Kufala represents the first two letters of each of the founding members’ lasts names: Khalid Al-Faisal and Brady Lahr. “In an African dialect mainly spoken in eastern Zimbabwe, it means to be happy, but we never knew that until after selecting the name. [It] works well, as we try to make the fans of bands we work with happy,” Lahr said. “Initially it was convincing artists to utilize our business model, and for those who have, they’ve found it profitable, and there’s minimal risk involved in releasing their live recordings. Word of mouth and our good work have been the main form of advertising. Our business has never been busier or more successful.” S✔

tech How to get creative with album art By Alycia Kiley

A

sk music fans about their favorite albums, and no doubt they can describe in detail the artwork on the covers. Finding a visual way to represent the sounds within is clearly an important element of any successful album, hence the ability to translate tunes into a look is an in-demand skill. Former New Times Editorial Designer Larissa Collins, who’s been in the Los Angeles music business for the past five years, translates the visions of musicians into album art and packaging. The diversity and creativity of her designs is stunning. From fold-out album covers to billboard posters and merchandise items, Collins does all the tour and retail advertising for the musicians she works with. Director of the Art Department for Concord Records, Collins works with the musicians the company signs. Through an intense collaboration process, designer and musician create the artwork that best represents the music. Collins’ design process begins with listening to the record repeatedly, even if this involves staying up until the wee hours of the morning. Then she talks to the artist to uncover and understand his or her vision. “My job is to relay the artist’s vision visually, to have the aesthetics of the album art represent their music and persona,” Collins explained. Once the idea has shape, the drafting process begins. Although Collins designs a lot herself, she also directs a team of in-house designers and freelancers. How Collins translates the musician’s mental concept into a tangible idea depends on each client. Some artists have a clear vision of what they want. John Mellencamp knew the feeling he wanted to express

music-related businesses on the Central Coast for his album No Better Than This, recorded in mono (with one microphone) on vintage equipment in churches and hotel rooms. “I wanted the packaging to represent this tactile, rough music,” Collins said. Working together, they made an album cover reminiscent of an old book. Printed on a mini jacket rather than a larger fold out, the presentation is direct and simple. “It has an aged, literary feel,” Collins described, “and is done on uncoated paper with minimal elements, very streamlined.” Macy Gray also had a clear vision, but a style completely different from Mellencamp’s. Bringing Gray’s idea to life involved a glamorous photo shoot, heaps of clothing, and many stylists. Collins described the final product as “high couture, glossy.” Other musicians are unclear as to what they want, prompting Collins to delve further into her own creativity. Listening to the album over and over, her inspiration comes from the music. “Sometimes it’s a line in a song that catches my attention, or a prevalent instrument,” she mused. Alejandro Escovedo was vague and had no plan for his cover. The photo shoot was taken before his album was named Street Songs of Love. “The songs were love songs, but not pretty ones.

Intern Alycia Kiley can be reached via soundcheck@newtimesslo.com. photograph on the album cover looks worn, resembling the cover of an old record that’s been sitting in a crate for years. In addition to photographs, Collins uses illustrations and paintings. In making The Chieftains album San Patricio, featuring Ry Cooder, she used a die. The solid black cover has a cross cut out of it, revealing a colorful painting beneath. The painted illustration by Moises is of the Virgin Mary holding a dead Irish soldier. The music is about the San Patricio soldiers—Irish immigrants to the United States who were pressed into fighting in the Mexican-American war. Without strong loyalty to the United States

and with the number of their dead rapidly increasing, they inevitably took sides with the Mexicans. Whether or not musicians have a vision for their album art, Collins designs a powerful and inventive physical presentation of their music. Studying at the Corcoran College of Art and Design in D.C., she grew up in a family involved in the music business. Finding inspiration in Alfred Hitchcock posters like Paul Rand’s design for Vertigo and Russian Bolshevik propaganda art, Collins uses an aesthetic that’s simple and poignant. She’s currently working on Kenny G’s Heart and Soul and a re-release of Paul McCartney’s Band on the Run. Collins’ work can be viewed at larissacollins.com and concordmusicgroup.com. S✔

It was gritty, flawed love. Love gone wrong,” Collins explained. “I had to reconcile the album title with the music.” To generate a visual embodiment of this dichotomy, she gave the album a back-story. Imagining a scorned lover finding Escovedo’s album and stomping on it with her stiletto heel, Collins formed a mental image of a cracked jewel case. Escovedo loved this idea, and the released CD cover is a picture of him leaning against a brick wall, with an overlaying image of a spider-like crack. Although nine out of 10 of the artists have photo shoots, some of the album art is highly conceptual. Collins just finished Mindi Abair’s jazz compilation High Fidelity. The

SLO County clubs, venues, festivals, and concert series An insider’s report on concerts in the park

S

By Kathy Johnston miling toddlers bob unsteadily to the rhythm, as a new generation of local music lovers gets its groove on. Laughing moms and pops—or grandparents—grab their older kids and twirl them on the dance floor. In the leafy shade, groups of friends in lawn chairs and on blankets share platters of sandwiches and bottles of wine as the notes ring out in the sunshine. From Paso Robles to Grover Beach, SLO County’s free outdoor community concerts have a well-deserved reputation for wholesome, down-home fun for audiences and performers alike. And although each town’s concerts in the park have their own unique flavor, organizers say they all help build a shared sense of community—while providing an enjoyable place for bands to play, and growing an ever-larger fan base for local live music. All summer long, every Friday at the end of the work day, Paso Robles’ downtown City Park fills with appreciative audiences ready to kick back and relax. With a new sound system boasting speakers in several locations under the towering shade trees, the event’s capacity has expanded this year—somewhere between 2,300 and 2,600 people show up each week to hear the talented musicians. “In the park, you’re in Americana. It’s like stepping into a Norman Rockwell painting. It captures something we’ve lost,” says Trine Marlen, recreation marketing coordinator for Paso’s Library and Recreation Services Department. “It’s the best multi-generational event we have. You see people you haven’t seen for a week, or a season. And it’s accessible to everyone because it’s free,” she adds. As at the other North County summertime concerts in the park, in Templeton and

Atascadero, music lovers take advantage of what Marlen calls “our silky evenings” to enjoy the outdoors and each other’s company. They’re allowed to bring their own picnics and beverages, alcoholic or non-alcoholic—which is discouraged or outright prohibited at South County and SLO concerts. Paso’s nonprofit REC Foundation also sells beer and wine to help cover the costs, and passes the hat for extra donations. In Atascadero, the Main Street Association takes on that role. For SLO County bands, although the pay isn’t great, the concerts in the park provide an opportunity for exposure to large audiences and for selling CDs. Playing these concerts is competitive, with various committees and boards meeting in the dead of winter to listen to submitted CDs and score the bands, making an effort to choose a variety of music for their communities. Paso Robles has added an extra concert this summer, now offering 10 shows, while some other communities have had to reduce the number of concerts because sponsorship is down. Atascadero has cut back from nine concerts to seven, according to Paula Anton, the city’s recreation supervisor. Grover Beach has eliminated its professional soundman, now relying on bands to provide their own PA for the Sunday afternoon concerts at Ramona Garden Park’s grassy amphitheater. Still, attendance at the Grover Beach concerts is increasing, up to 500 on a recent Sunday, says Parks and Recreation Director Kathy Petker. Held in conjunction with a farmers market, the concerts are a place for people to mingle and socialize. “There’s a wonderful sense of community. People come and relax. Our setting is low key and casual, and you can get up close to the band. Hundreds of people dance right up in front,” Petker says. “Our main motive is to get people out of the house and help them feel proud of what’s happening in their city and their well-maintained city park. It’s a way to get to know their

neighbors, to leave the computer behind and get outside,” she adds. So does live music sound better outside? “It’s definitely more fun to listen to music outside,” she says. Marlen agrees, saying, “Music feels better outside. It’s not like going to the PAC, where you get a sense of stepping into European culture. This is Americana, something everyone can take part in, where you’re with 2,000 other people who love music and warm weather and who we are as a community.” For “Guitar Wizard” Billy Foppiano,

whose band the Mighty Croon Dogs has been playing at various concerts in the park for years, live music always sounds better outside. “In a room, it’s all cooped up and bounces around. Outside, it sounds more open. Outside, you can be half as good and sound twice as good!” he quips. “Music brings people together,” Foppiano adds, recalling an experience several years ago. The Mighty Croon Dogs were hired to play for the wedding of a young couple who had met at the Templeton concert where the band played. At the Dogs’ Templeton concert a couple of years later, the couple showed up again, this time with a stroller in tow. The band is looking forward to seeing the couple’s growing family at this year’s concert. San Luis Obispo’s Concerts in the Plaza series is also a place for socializing and “being seen,” with more of a Friday happy-hour flavor than a big family picnic. Shell Beach takes advantage of fog-free weather by holding its Dinosaur Caves concerts in springtime. Arroyo Grande gets help with booking bands from the SLO Jazz Federation, the Bluegrass Music Society of the Central Coast, SLOFolks, and the SLO Blues Society for its Sunday afternoon concerts in Heritage Square Park. Commercial venues around SLO County have also jumped on the outdoor concert bandwagon, from strip mall sandwich makers to golf course clubhouses—and, of course, wineries. For local musicians and music lovers alike, summertime calendars are bursting with opportunities. Meanwhile, in Paso Robles, Marlen is excited about going to the Wednesday evening concert in Templeton’s shady park, where she’s made new friends: “We just started chatting about recipes to the people next to us. This week, he’s bringing a toolbox barbecue and cooking a leg of lamb. We’re bringing local fingerling potatoes and salad. “It’s such fun. You just sit out there and kick it. We never would have met them without the concerts in the park,” Marlen adds. S✔
