hat you’re holding in your hands is the firstever Soundcheck magazine, an all-access guide to the SLO County music scene. It’s the most important document since the freakin’ Declaration of Independence! It’s like owning an original Jimi Hendrix set list! It’s like you’re holding John Lennon’s handwritten lyrics to “Imagine!” Okay, maybe not quite that important. But if you like music, if you’re a musician, in a band, looking for a band, need to cut a record, want to buy or repair an instrument, or in some way involved or interested in the SLO County music industry, this may very well be the most important publication of the year. Soundcheck has a list of hundreds of bands and musicians [11] , a section on everything from event managers to equipment rentals to promoters to sound engineers and more [32] , and a long list of clubs, venues, festivals, and concert series [38] . Keep it around all year to reference whenever Damon Castillo rocked a recent you need something evening at Concerts in the Plaza. music-related. This inaugural edition also has a few choice stories. Read what local musicians have to say about being asked to play for food [8] . How do promoters do their jobs? I find out [28] . Contributor Matt Fountain profiles Butch Boswell of Butch’s Guitar & Repair [36] . Intern Marin Kautz profiles youth music teacher Ginette Reitz [35] . And finally contributor Christy Heron explains the popularity of outdoor concert series such as Concerts in the Plaza [38] . If you’re a musician or in a music-related business and you’re not in here, don’t worry, because work on next year’s addition starts right now. Central Coast musicians sound off on pay equity By Glen Starkey

D

espite our thriving music scene, it’s rough out there for upand-coming musicians. Some lament the lack of opportunity, while others moan about being exploited and underpaid. Earlier this year, it became clear how deep feelings run regarding pay equity when an advertisement from a North County business—Hoovers 101 Coffee and Brewhouse—was placed on craigslist and ignited an online firestorm. Here’s the innocuous little ad that started it all: “Hoovers 101 Coffee and Brewhouse is looking for musicians to play Fridays on our patio. We are looking for solo/acoustic musicians or full bands to play between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. during our dinner hours. We are looking for the following genres: reggae, country, classic rock, alternative rock, indie rock, bluegrass, roots rock, jazz, blues, and soul. Musicians will receive FREE dinner and drinks for every performing artist in their band. We are currently taking cd/myspace link submissions for the month of June through the summer. Come showcase your talent at Hoovers 101 Coffee and Brewhouse in Atascadero. You must provide your own P.A.” And here’s a few of the choice selections from the thread that followed: “To any musicians that are participating in these play-to-eat venues: Please stop! This is an incredible rip-off on the music community in general. Musicians for years have worked to try and have a decent pay scale for services rendered, and when you do these bookings you’re undermining all the hard work of the music community. “Is your time and talent really only worth about $5.00 a man?” continued the poster. “Consider you have to play two to four hours and at least [spend] one hour’s set-up time, and [you’ll spend] the money for your gas to get there, supply ALL of the equipment and the hours of practice. I understand the need for exposure, but this is a rip off. Food prices are high; the waitress is expecting 10 to 15% minimum tip, and you will settle for maybe $2 in your tip jar and a $6 burger? Playing for your supper went out in the dark ages (okay, it did come back in the Great Depression), but the point is that if this concept

is allowed to become the standard then you will never see any income. “You already know that if your friends come to see you that they most likely will not tip because they are your friends and tipping cuts into their beer budget. The [number] of bookings that you get for parties, weddings etc. are few and far between coming from the bar/club venues. This is very similar to the ‘pay to play’ program that has controlled the L.A. music scene for decades. If you were any other crafts person or tradesman, would you be building a house or lay tile, do taxes, wait on customers in a retail outlet for a couple of sandwiches? I certainly hope not. “If you or your band’s musical abilities are so poor that you must resort to this type of pay arrangement then perhaps you need to keep practicing. In closing let me say that I’m not opposed to bartering services, but what’s being offered by Hoovers (a fine place, just happens to be the final straw to bring about this post) and others is ridiculous.” That was just the start. One person suggested boycotting such places, “including eating there while some pitiful scab band plays

for their supper.” Another said, “Playing for table scraps is an insult to musicians all over the world! Do you have no pride in your skills? Is this your worth, your value? A dinner?!? If we don’t stop it now, it will be a reoccurring trend. What kind of crack do they smoke anyways?!? On a personal note, I don’t believe playing on the Central Coast as a whole is an investment into any musician’s true talents because of the lack of local band support, but this one takes the cake. You can make more money sitting in any local park and playing for an hour or two.” That last missive was signed “Will Not Bend Over.” Some comments took a decidedly more tongue-in-cheek approach. “I feel kind of cheated. My band played there and I had to pay for my own dinner. What a rip.” One writer, Mike Buzz, found these anonymous posts offensive: “Hey guys, have the BALLS to use your name in these types of posts! Otherwise YOU look like SCABS ! I’m not saying anything about Hoovers one way or the other! Just be a MAN !” Suddenly one poster tried to inject some reason into the mounting rantfest. “Thank you to all who have responded so positively to my post regarding Hoovers ‘Play and Eat’ policy. If you know of other establishments that

TO PLAY OR NOT TO PLAY? Should local musicians perform at a venue in exchange for food and beverages? That’s the question a thread on craigslist tried to answer.

The who, what, and why on local musicians are adopting this practice, I encourage you to post them. My only request would be is to be civil in your announcement. Hey, we all could use some funny lines and stories but let’s take the high road here first and work towards changing things. Let’s be realistic about our expectations; after all we don’t need any more sports bars. “Everything is negotiable and there is nothing wrong per se about being ‘low balled.’ How the establishment handles your counter offer is the real test of their interest in having a real musical venue. That brings up another point. Be thinking ahead about alternatives before you get to the person who is booking. You won’t be caught off guard and can usually end the meeting on a good note, even if you don’t land the gig the first time out. They do not know you from a knothole and whatever you say about how great your band or act is, or how large your following is, they hear from everyone. There is nothing wrong with walking away from the table and returning at a later date. Also, always keep in mind that this is ‘The Music Business’ and if you want to be paid like a professional, you should act like one. “I believe that if more bands start to operate with negotiating in mind and are willing to walk away if they cannot come to an agreement at first, some venues will start to adapt. But it takes real stones to walk away sometimes. Remember music, acting, and the arts in general are some of the highest rejection professions out there. Always have been, always will be. Be tough and play to win. There is no ‘Bail Out’ for us. “Lastly, I would like the bands and acts to open up and communicate more on what their booking fees are and what the other venues are paying. Or at least the ranges set. By arming ourselves with this kind of information, we protect the integrity of the work. The more we play ‘I’ve got a secret,’ the more ground we lose because someone mistakenly lowers the standard out of ignorance. If you are armed with what the other comparable acts to you are getting, you will be more successful and not appear to be a scab laborer.” Other posters had no problem with Hoovers’ offer: “I can certainly play the slot you guys need filled. I play guitar and have a band of 65 people. Some of them are vegetarian so I hope you have some good veggie dishes too! I have a PA I built in my garage that works pretty good. It is a large cardboard megaphone that we take turns singing through. ... Thanks, and let me know and we will schedule you guys in! If you need [it], we can pick you up so you don’t have to drive and maybe clean your house or harvest your field.” That one was signed “El Douche and the Brokeback Mountaineers.” Now that I read it again, maybe he did have a problem with the offer. Okay, here’s a poster who really doesn’t have a problem with singing for his supper. “Yeah, yeah—you never heard of a starving artist? Check out Twofish for your next opportunity to eat and drink! It’s true, they’re starving for soul food in Africa, therefore the Fish says, ‘Get it while

“I’m not on here to be nice. I’m upset about a HUGE problem, and you are riding the fence. The way I see it, you’re either with ‘us’ or with ‘them.’ And if you can’t choose a side, then you’re with them. Why do you want people’s names? So you can confront them? Or so these musicians and their bands can be ostracized from the (cool kids) scene altogether? I’m just trying to stand up for what is right, and this establishment (Hoovers) is trying to make us musicians, YOU included, look like a bunch of court jesters. Fools that are to be paid in food. And yes, in the beginning we’ve all played free gigs for our friends or to fill a slot that was vacated by another band, to gain maybe a small fan base. But this is a trend that I’ve had the displeasure of seeing time and time again in other states. It’s like your neighborhood gas station bumps the price per gallon up a dollar, and the others follow suit. If we don’t stand up now, then we are saying it’s okay. And it’s not okay. We have shared a barstool and a beer on more than one occasion Mike [Buzz], and I find you to be good conversation, and a generally ‘good’ person, and in saying that I apologize for bashing you, it wasn’t fair. But if you are going to throw in your two cents, make a decision on where you stand ... and don’t walk in front of my crosshairs when I’m firing on the enemy. I SUPPORT ALL LOCAL MUSIC! Even and especially the little guy. And the response: “‘You’re either with me or against me?’ LOL! Can we dial back the drama a little bit please? If you don’t want to play for dinner at Hoovers then DON’T. However, some bands might, for whatever reason, and that is THEIR business. Maybe they’re just starting out, and this would be their first time playing live. I’ve been playing out for a long time, but I still remember how fun it was to play at the Dark Room

garble them out in relatively correct keys. I’m ‘old’ (36) and I’ve gone through the ringer and back. My only real quality is I have a job, a wife, kids, and I miss playing my songs. I miss learning other people’s songs. I like playing for people, not money or ego. I just like playing. I enjoy listening. So take some of that energy, be it negative or positive or introspective or introverted and couple it with a cold beer and—pow!—release your shit. It’s a good idea, huh? Best one I’ve heard so far. Let’s leave this discussion on a positive note with one last post from Larry Stone of Pismo Beach. “If you rate your importance in this life by the amount of money you make, you are really missing out on the true essence of being—that of being in harmony with self, our planet and with others. Go out to the woods, sit by a stream, tune your guitar to the brilliance of the stars, throw a $5.00 bill in a street musician’s hat or guitar case. Listen with your heart—not just with your ears and what’s just in your head. “Give thanks every day that you have the talent to share and elevate the mood of others to a higher state. Back off on Hoovers. Get back to what is real, and remember: You are only as good as your last gig. You are blessed to have your talent. Share it! Bare it! Be fair with it. Amen, brother! But what does Hoovers owner Debbie Blair think about all the hubbub? “It seems like people are thinking we want big name bands to come play for free, but we were just advertising for a little acoustic thing, she explained. “We don’t charge a cover, and we thought it might be nice for one or two people who might want to play instrumentals for a couple hours to enjoy a steak dinner and a couple glasses of wine. The patio’s so beautiful, and we

“A lot of people have expressed interest and we’ve had several play more than once. They’ve said, ‘This is awesome. People get to come see us play.’ —Debbie Blair, Hoovers owner in SLO (remember that?) busting our asses and getting paid almost nothing, but the pay didn’t even matter. We were on stage playing, and all of our friends were watching us. It was great! Also, I know the people at Hoovers pretty well, and I can guarantee you they are not trying to rip anyone off by doing this. I’m sure they’re just doing the best they can with the funds they have available. Times are tough all over. Some came to vent, some came to solve: “Hello you whining babies. PROBLEM SOLVED. Join Local 308 in Santa Barbara and start playing paying venues, that is of course if you can read a chart and play a casual. There are tons of venues in Pismo and SLO that pay musicians, not to mention the wineries, but you must have something

thought it’d be a nice opportunity for people who don’t get a chance to play too much. It’s not for a nightclub act. When we’ve done this in the past, it wasn’t as if the musicians were bringing in more business, and if anyone’s offended by the offer, then this isn’t something for them. So has Hoovers attracted some musicians willing to play for food? “Oh, yes, Blair explained. “A lot of people have expressed interest and we’ve had several play more than once. They’ve said, ‘This is awesome. People get to come see us play.’ Sometimes that’s enough. S✔ Glen Starkey spreads joy, but no playing in public. Thanks him at gstarkey@newtimesslo.com.

Local promoters sound off on how they get the music to you By Glen Starkey

S

hows don’t just happen. They require planning and financing. Oftentimes concertgoers never think about what it took to organize the event they’re attending, but there’s always somebody behind the scenes who laid the groundwork and risked the money to bring you live music. Soundcheck talked to five local promoters about what it is they do. First, let’s meet them: Curtis Reinhardt, who organizes several events—including the Arroyo Grande Harvest and Strawberry festivals and the Village Summer Concert Series—got his start 35 years ago at the University of Kansas where he booked shows for the Student Union Activities organization, later moving on to nightclubs and then performing art centers. Steven R. See arrived in SLO in 1973 and quickly joined Cal Poly’s ASI Concert Committee. The next year he was elected chairman and brought John Fahey, folk legend John Stewart, and Journey (on their third gig!) to perform that summer, but he got his concert promoter start before that: “I started out in the mid-‘60s charging the neighborhood kids a nickel to watch my brothers lip-synch to Beatle records.” See runs the Hoot Road Show. Bruce Howard has been at the promoting game for 25-plus years. The former K-Otter radio station owner sold to K-Pig and devoted himself to Otter Productions, Inc., which books shows in local venues as well as organizes huge outdoor concerts at places like the Avila Beach Resort. Eddy Burgos of Numbskull Productions is the area’s youngest promoter and certainly the edgiest, catering to the youth market, punk and metal fans, and beyond. Yet he’s been doing it since he was a teenager. This year marks his 20th anniversary as a promoter.

k c a b g n i l Pul

Five Sisters Entertainment is one of the newest music promoter companies in the area, having started in 2007. One of the five, Maria Carroll, spoke to Soundcheck.

We made a pact while eating lunch on campus one sunny afternoon that we’d do whatever it took to bring Garcia to town. That was a pretty amazing process. You can still stand on the very stage where Jerry once stood while ordering a hamburger. There was a series of concerts at the Great American Melodrama in the late-‘70s that featured The Dillards, Jim Ringer, Mary McCaslin, and the Byron Berline Band. Byron had a then-19-year-old Vince Gill playing guitar that night. The crowd was in musical awe. I worked with the talented Dr. Warren

Soundcheck Who do you think is the biggest act you’ve ever booked? Reinhardt Hard to answer. I’ve worked with a number of big artists in various genres. Many of the bigger acts that I’ve worked with were on their way up when I first worked with them. A 1,600-seat FAMILY FRIENDLY venue was the largest Curtis Reinhardt, shown that I ever booked and, here in the early ‘80s of course, the capacity rocking a handlebar limited the selection to mustache with BB King, books tons of free, some extent. Here are a family-friendly concerts few: Sting (when he was throughout SLO County. with the Police), Tina Turner, Roy Orbison, BB King, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Bonnie Raitt, James Brown, the Temptations, Count Basie, Stan Kenton, Buddy Rich, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Reba, Johnny Mathis, Eddie Arnold, David Copperfield, Henry Kissinger, Marcel Marceau, Chieftains, and Victor Borge. See I’ve been lucky enough to have had my hand in some rather remarkable bookings over the past 35 years. My longtime friend Dennis Koda and I brought the Jerry Garcia Band to the Pismo Theater in the late-‘70s.

Balfour on bringing the Ray Charles Orchestra to Cuesta College in the 1980s that, for a variety of reasons, was not an easy thing to do. We used every trick in the book to pull it together. That concert sold out. My favorite was a one-nighter in Baywood Park featuring the late Kate Wolf and the original Cache Valley Drifters. This was in the late-‘70s, tickets were $2.50, and of course we didn’t fill the house. I still miss Kate. Howard Faith Hill, Jack Johnson, Incubus, Tony Bennett, Bill Cosby, Bonnie GIVING A HOOT Steven R. See of the Raitt, Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne, 311, Hoot Road Show has been bringing Willie Nelson, Tori Amos, Wynonna great entertainers to the county on a Judd, Burt Bacharach, BB King, Chris shoestring budget for decades.

Isaac, Wayne Newton, John Lee Hooker, Lyle Lovett, Blink 182, Barenaked Ladies, Ben Harper, Pretenders, Jethro Tull, Chicago, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Doobie Brothers, Bunny Wailer, Ziggy Marley, Little Richard. Burgos The biggest act impact-wise would be Fugazi/Ian Mackaye. The dude is the founding father of DIY culture. Commercial-wise, hands down it was Green Day. Carroll Poco with Jimmy Messina and Richie Furay. Soundcheck Promoting seems a lot like gambling, so how do you decide whom to risk your money on? Reinhardt My decisions were usually based on research, past experience, entertainer and show costs, competition, day of the week, and gut feelings. I got to the point about 10 years ago that I couldn’t pick up the phone to book a pop or country PHOTO COURTESY OF CURTIS REINHARDT

act. I could no longer stand working with the greedy bottom-feeding agents and managers. The odds are stacked much more against promoters now than they were 20 years ago. Unlimited downside and a very limited upside. That’s why I now work with sponsored shows. See You certainly aren’t in this racket for the money. I’ve been told that I have a fairly good knack for picking good entertainment, and my tastes in music run pretty wide and eclectic. The current concerts series (Hoot Road Show) has been in place for almost

I’m quite happy that the artists that I’ve brought to town have all been easy to deal with and decent human beings. Howard Research. Burgos Numbskull has always been a labor of love, so there are times I will book stuff through fanboy lenses, which from an economic standpoint is not necessarily the best philosophy. I can’t even count how many shows we have done where it was just the band, the janitor, and me. But before we book any financially risky show, we definitely research the act’s level of popularity/demand and then make a hopefully sound decision from there. Carroll We pick artists that we like and that we feel will fit well at a particular venue. We’ve found that the more enthusiastic we are about an act, the better we are at promoting it and the better our ticket sales are. We’ve also found that lesser-known acts, ticket price, day of the week, venue location, and the economy play a larger role in how successful the show is. That doesn’t, however, deter us from promoting lesserknown acts. We just proceed more cautiously and try to keep our expenses low. There are so many incredible musicians out there that don’t get mainstream radio airplay, and we at Five Sisters Entertainment want to do our

part to help them get their music heard. Soundcheck Tell me about a show that you thought would be great but did poorly, and a show you thought wouldn’t be successful but was. Reinhardt I booked the Police on one of their early tours and lost money. (I incorrectly figured that a $2,000 fee on a Sunday night was a pretty good bet.) I got gun shy immediately after that and passed on Bruce Springsteen for $3,500! I booked Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs to read from their works as a favor to a literary friend. We closed that show with the ‘70s Kansas punk band Thumbs. We sold 550 tickets on a Tuesday night. Go figure. See I worked my tail off bringing Steve Forbert to town once and couldn’t believe how difficult it was to get 70 people into a small venue for such a talented person. I still remember the day his first album came out while I was working at KZOZ some 30 years back. He gets tremendous airplay on KPIG. I’m still confused

about that one. We took a chance on Amy LaVere a few years back and had a show with her at the Steynberg. The band had played in front of seven people in Santa Barbara the night before and truly didn’t want to play for us that night. As it turned out, we filled up the joint, the band went to that special place that bands sometimes go, and the crowd loved it. There was a really strong standing ovation at the end of the first set, and it was the first standing ovation that they had ever received. Since then, she’s done some acting in a few major motion pictures, she was on the Conan O’Brien show, and is a regular on MTV’s Dollar Cover. Amy’s sweet. Howard A couple years ago I tried to do a “Sunset Series at Avila, smaller, table seating, with Chris Isaac, Taj Mahal, George Thorogood ... I thought that a smaller outdoor summer series with really quality acts, at sunset at the most beautiful venue possible—Avila—would work well ... it did not. The first time we did Jack Johnson a few years ago, the first time at the Rec Center at Cal Poly, no radio station in the county was playing him except for K-Otter ... it sold out in a few hours! Everyone who came sang his songs word for word! It was great to see a new artist with relatively no radio play and no real national exposure who everyone knew and loved! Burgos If the barometer for success is ticket sales, then I got plenty of stinker stories for ya, but one show that I remain permanently scarred from is Motorhead in Bakersfield. You would think Motorhead in Bako is a no-brainer. The town is chock full of working-class riffraff, bikers, metalheads, tweekers, drug addicts, etc.—basically the band’s main demographic. For whatever reason, the show totally ate shit. But I got to hang with Lemmy for the night, got the set list, and a ruling pic with him. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Well, that night it was worth $10,972. Carroll In March we brought Raul Malo and Shelby Lynne to the Clark Center in Arroyo Grande. We’d last booked Raul Malo at the Templeton Performing Arts Center in May 2007 and we had sold out the show at 335 seats. We figured with the addition of Shelby Lynne and having the show at the Clark Center (in a more populated area) and on a Friday night (instead of a Monday like the 2007 show), we would double our ticket sales from 2007 or worst-case scenario we would

Worse? there was a comedian who was calling us Reinhardt The best was Ella Fitzgerald all the time, up and coming, willing to work singing in the backseat of my Oldsmobile for nothing. Maria Carroll, and Kathy Clarke, surround Raul Malo. About 150 showed up. Those are precious memories, getting to meet some of the legends and getting to work with some struggling artists who were to become legendary. Burgos There’s no single best memory that outshines all the others, but there are situations where I just pinch myself and can’t believe how lucky I am to be around music every night. music related businesses on the Central Coast Ginette Reitz shares her passion By Marin Kautz

E

ach year, more than 14,000 San Luis Obispo county school children take part in one of the many youthoriented SLO Symphony programs, from listening to a visiting quartet to participating in the Strings in the Schools afterschool program. Twenty years ago, none of this would have been possible, but because of the work of SLO’s dedicated musicians in the last 15 years, we’ve all seen a major expansion of the educational music programs available to our youth. Led by the SLO Symphony’s director of 25 years, Michael Nowak, these local artists collaborated to build and mold a Youth Symphony program to outlast this age of virtual reality and get the instruments back into the hands of music’s future creators. One such artist is Ms. Ginette Reitz, who first ventured into music at the age of 4. With a long lineage of musicians, a father dedicated to the culture of classical music, and three older siblings already immersed in the magical world of classical compositions, there’s no question where she got her passion for the arts. “It was never a question of if we were going to play or not, it was just what instrument,” Reitz recalled. After studying piano for two years, the 6year-old Reitz grasped hold of a violin and never let go. Although throughout her childhood the study of music, and especially violin and chorus, was always a constant, it was during high school that music became a more emotional experience, and finally her love for it blossomed into a passion during her freshman year at Humboldt State University, where she graduated with a degree in music instruction. After college, Reitz began playing with the Oregon Bach Festival Orchestra and Choir. Although she’s played with many orchestras, a major highlight was playing for 14 summers with the Oregon Bach Festival Orchestra and Choir. During that time, the group recorded a piece by composer Kyzysztof Penderecki that won several awards, including a Grammy for the best choral performance. Reitz also taught music in Monterey for a time before she was introduced to the SLO Symphony’s Nowak while he performed at her school. Shortly after meeting Reitz, Nowak invited her to move to the Central Coast and join him with his work in the newly formed SLO Youth Symphony. That was back 1988, and since then Reitz has become involved in many aspects of this community. As one of the first string teachers in the local school programs, she was a private tutor, took part in the Music Van program—a large van filled with instruments brought to elementary schools in the county to allow the children the opportunity to play with

and sample different instruments—and directed the Youth Symphony for two years before taking a break from conducting to pursue other musical endeavors. She’s now returned to the Youth Symphony as a coach and as the instructor for the Strings in the Schools program at both Monarch Grove Elementary and Del Mar Elementary School. “What I notice in watching Ginette teach is that she balances the structure and discipline needed to play the violin with a creative freedom that allows our students to really enjoy the process. Working with a professional musician of Ginette’s level gives our students a wonderful model to emulate,” said Andrea Stoner, music

New York City. Although Reitz is a “freelance performer,” she regularly plays with the SLO Symphony and Pacific Repertory Opera. Besides music, another of her greatest loves is her horses. She began training horses at a young age and over the years has drawn many parallels between training and teaching. She’s used these comparisons to better her abilities as a teacher and to adjust her mindset when extending advice to students on approaching challenges. “This method of horse training is about creating a partnership with your horse where you are the leader, but only by 51 SHOWING THE WAY percent and you A passion for music starts allow your horse young and is nurtured by to have ideas as teachers such as Ginette well. old is generally the youngest—she’s able to use this method and the structure and technique found in classical music to build a strong foundation for the children, which inspires many to continue further into the music field. As a student of Reitz’s for more than eight years, Sarah Eminhizer has only praise for her teacher and mentor, from whom she began taking lessons at age 10 and is still in contact with even after graduating college. “Ginette helped foster my musical talent and my work ethic,” Eminhizer enthused. “She’s been my bright light for many years. Even when we had a difficult time affording lessons, Ginette always made it possible.” Despite the vast improvements made to educational music opportunities in schools in the last two decades, in such tough economic times both Nowak and Reitz emphasized the importance of retaining such programs. Reitz commented that she has had the opportunity to work with kids who have no music program in their school and kids who do. “There is a huge difference!” she said. “For people who have had some exposure to music and how it’s put together, even in very simple ways, the act of learning to play a new instrument is much easier, rather than if you’re starting from music just being completely magical and foreign.” Reitz is adamant in the improvements music can have on the life of a child, from developing their creativity to developing their ability to be comfortable in a leadership role. She does make a significant distinction between simply listening to music and interacting with it. Reitz says that early exposure to music is fantastic because it helps develop a person’s ear, and creating a sensitive listener can help in many areas beyond mere music. “It’s amazing all that your mind goes through when you’re in the situation of playing,” she said. “You have all your playing skills and your reading skills, too, and then there are the leadership rolls, which fly around from person to person throughout any given piece, so you are either being the leader and learning about communicating or you’re watching and picking up cues from the person who is the leader and then responding. You need to react really quickly; you almost have to anticipate what they’ll be doing. It really stretches you, and with so much going on, it has to be good for your brain. It’s so much more than just walking and chewing gum.” The SLO Symphony and its youth programs offer many concerts and performances throughout the year, with opportunities available to study music for all ages and levels. He assembles them himself in the shop, offering any color, neck size, or other specification customers want, and he special orders all vintage components from companies that replicate vintage guitar parts, creating a finished product as close to the real thing as you can get without being sent to the poorhouse. “I started building these guitars for fun, you know, as a fun thing for my customers,” Boswell said. “But I’ve been pretty successful at it so far, and without me really intending it to, it’s been a pretty lucrative thing. It’s also been a really good outlet for me.” According to Boswell, he chose the Telecaster model for his own line both because of its place in music history and its timeless design. “They’re just a workhorse, you know? It’s one of those things where form and function meet perfectly,” he said. “They’re comfortable to play, they sound great, and they’re used in just about every genre of music you can imagine. The Telecaster came out in the ‘50s and there’s a reason absolutely nothing has changed about them—and the same goes with the Stratocaster. If you have an invention where there’s beauty to it and it’s purely functional, that’s a hit out of the park.” PHOTOS BY STEVE E. or a professional musician, when it comes to repairing your instrument, nothing is more important than trust. You don’t put your livelihood into the hands of just anyone. For more than a decade, musicians on the Central Coast have placed their instruments in the hands of Butch Boswell. The owner of Butch’s Guitar & Repair in San Luis Obispo, Boswell has worked on stringed instruments for years, specializing in high-end vintage guitar repair. As opposed to many local music shops in the area that focus on retail, Butch’s specializes in maintenance, repair, installation, and restoration—basically, everything and anything that will make your instrument function the way it was intended to. In addition, Boswell is an accredited Martin,

Taylor, Fender, Gibson, Guild, Collings, and Santa Cruz warranty repair person for the Central Coast region, something he says brings that extra bit of credibility with customers and puts their mind at ease when they leave a $10,000 guitar with him. Though Boswell can work on any stringed instrument under the sun, he’s known throughout the community for his delicate touch when it comes to vintage guitar maintenance, a task that takes a great deal of skill and attention to detail. “The day-to-day stuff is fun, and I’m always really appreciative,” Boswell said. “But the vintage guitars are really something. That’s what’s really fun. There’s always something you’re not expecting, a lot of variables, a lot of unknowns.” Vintage guitar repair is not something even the most skilled of musical technicians can break into overnight. It takes a long time to get into that market, no matter what your experiences are, and Boswell has worked hard to earn the trust of the community’s musicians. “I think especially if you’re younger, many players have a hard time trusting you with their instruments,” Boswell said. “When I was in

ask me, ‘Have you worked on that guitar?’ And I’ll say, ‘Oh, yeah. I’ve seen that one.’ It’s probably more rare for me to have not worked on a guitar and I’ll think, ‘Wow, that’s a nice one. I wonder if they’ll bring that in soon.’ Being the support team for a countless number of musicians means not working your typical nine-to-fiver. In a town where on any given night a handful of bands are filling the many venues around the Central Coast, the work can get intense. “I’ve had people come in and say, ‘Hey, I need to play this guitar for a show tonight. Do you think you can do me a solid and squeeze it in?’ Boswell said. “I always try to accommodate, but even as confident as I am, it always

to look for adventure and found himself working for one of the most famous repair shops in New York, Rudy’s Repairs. There, in the “vintage guitar Mecca of Times Square, he honed his skills at complex guitar repair, personally attending to the instruments of such notable musicians and entertainers as Bruce Springsteen, Kevin Bacon, and Mark Knopfler. While his stay in New York was educational and exciting, he soon found his favorite small town calling him back. “I just like this small community we have here, and I really missed that, Boswell said. “I knew so many people in town from being here for 10 years and working on guitars. In New York, you’re just another random face. It’s one of those things where you just don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone. Since Butch’s Guitar & Repair opened in October of 2007, Boswell has developed a loyal customer base and as it continues to expand, Boswell has earned a reputation as the man to see for professional musicians in the area. “He’s someone you can trust, said veteran acoustic artist and New Times “Best Male Vocalist Tim Jackson. “He’s honest, fair, and he’ll always give you the straight scoop. And with Butch you’ve got the experience factor where he can just dial right in and bring out the best in your instrument. I’m really glad we have guys like him in the area. Toan Chau, guitarist for a number of local groups—including Cuesta Ridge and the Tipsy Gypsies—said that when it comes repairing a guitar, Butch is “all about the details. “He seems to just have more knowledge and up-to-date techniques, Chau said. “He can bring

guitars back to life when you didn’t think they had a chance. I recommend him all the time. Though not presently involved in any band, Boswell is also an avid musician and naturally takes a great interest in the local music scene on the Central Coast, being on a first-name basis with most of the area’s professional musicians. One of his favorite things to do is attend shows with his wife and see the instruments he’s worked on in action. “I think the local music scene here is just awesome, he said. “Those guys are my support team, and I feel like I’m their support team. I think I’ve probably worked on most musicians’ instruments in the community. In fact, when my wife and I go to a show, she’ll

makes me nervous, and I wish they had a day to play on it. But I get those sometimes, those emergency fixes. “That’s probably the thing I love most, he added. “Somebody brings me a guitar and they obviously love the guitar, but they don’t necessarily know that it could be potentially so much better. Guitars fade over time. I love to breathe life back into them and see their faces just super stoked, and that’s what’s so fun about the job. Getting people turned on about their guitars again is just so great. Boswell also said the location of his shop is a perfect fit, and he feels right at home in the Creamery in downtown San Luis Obispo. “I had worked on and off in the Creamery for 10 years in another guitar store that was here, and it’s always had that artistic feel, you know? he said. “The Creamery has always been full of real artistic people; whether it’s photography, painting, or food, this is just a cool place and a very neat place to work. More people need to know about it. Whether or not you have an instrument that needs repair, a stop in at Butch’s Guitar & Repair always promises to be an interesting one. “It’s a fun shop to see because there’s always random old guitars in here for sale. Every other day someone brings one in, and it’s always evolving, Boswell said. “Me and my right hand man Connor are here all the time and working on cool stuff. I have a lot of locals that just come in to the shop to chat and see what I’m working on. So I always encourage people to just come in, see what’s up, and let’s talk guitars! S✔ Contact freelance writer Matt Fountain via soundcheck@newtimesslo.com.

SLO County offers live music almost every day of the week By Christy Heron

ummer in San Luis Obispo County means classic days at the beach, warm thermometer readings, and a superfluity of outdoor live music. You have the pick of the litter when it comes to concerts, from more than two-dozen, free, weekly series happening all over the county. Some biweekly, some monthly, the outdoor tunes will take you from Templeton to Paso, from SLO to Avila and up to Arroyo Grande, with many stops in between. I got the lyrical lowdown from San Luis Obispo and Atascadero. SLO Downtown Association Concerts in the Plaza take place every Friday through Aug. 28 from 5:30 to

CONCERTO ALL’APERTO! That’s Italian for “outdoor concert,” a clearly popular event at the Downtown Association’s Concerts in the Plaza series at the SLO Mission.

7:30 p.m. near the Mission. Promotions Coordinator at the San Luis Obispo Downtown Association, Reyes Miranda, oversees Concerts in the Plaza and maintains SLO has the best of best. “We have solidified ourselves as the premiere concert series in the area,” he said. “We pour Firestone beer, Edna Valley wines. The location is downtown, near the businesses.” Which is the Association’s main goal—to bring business to the downtown area and to extend a free event to the public. Concerts equal foot traffic and in addition to supporting downtown as a whole, local businesses reap the rewards as happy wanderers head to dinner at

a local restaurant or move the party to The Network and Native, after the music ends in the Mission. It’s no surprise the 14-year-old event in SLO claims to be No. 1, since it’s the oldest of all of the communities’ concert series, setting the precedent for all others. With at least 60 applications this year, the one criterion for bands applying must be that they’re local. One of the members must be from either Santa Barbara or SLO counties. A top priority for Concerts in the Plaza is promoting local musicianship. Organizers choose the best and the most popular acts, ones that draw big crowds

each year: Resignation, Damon Castillo Band, and Still Time. “These are huge draws,” Miranda said. Some have performed a handful of times, and some since the event’s inception. Joe Pilloud—vocalist, piano, and guitar player in Big Daddy’s Blues Band—talked with New Times between lunch and laying down tracks on his second solo effort, an album incorporating blues, jazz, and alternative music. Pilloud has been performing with Big Daddy’s Blues Band for the past 20 years, has performed at all of the concert series around the county, and will hit the stage

SLO Concerts in the Plaza is no doubt king of the concert series, and according to Paula Anton, recreation supervisor for the city of Atascadero, it was also the model for the Atascadero Saturday series. Since 2002, on Saturdays through Sept. 5, concertgoers have enjoyed the cooler evenings by the lake, while listening to live music. “This is a huge draw for concertgoers, Anton said about the evening temperaChristy Heron can be reached at cheron tures. @newtimesslo.com. There, she learned how to create her own summer music event. Back then, there were just seven band submissions. This year, they had 28 entries, bringing the total to nine concerts in 2009, with seven returning ensembles. From a “Call for Artists deadline in February, Anton prepares for six months. The goal of Atascadero’s concert series? “It’s a huge community event that is free to the public, Anton said.
