between March and September, I thought nothing could faze me.

But I was wrong.

Between a jump in events overall (a 20 percent increase!) and the beautiful range of happenings, I was stupefied—even after all of these years as calendar editor—by the artistic community as a whole, and especially by individuals’ efforts to galvanize us all.

Don’t be daunted— this seemingly interminable list is organized by category, subcategory, and date.

It’s easy on the eyes.

Go on, you dilettantes, and embrace these results of creation, and thank the calendar gods there’s this much to do over the next six and a half months. ∆

The local arts scene is bigger and better than ever—and we’ve got the proof

T

here’s no Jackson Pollock hanging or Hahn-Bin performance within 150 miles of here, but what SLO County’s arts scene has is something just as magnetic and inspired. (We’re including some Santa Barbara County, too, just because.)

It’s the little things, right? And when you add up all those small but relevant offerings, your mind begins to wrap around the fact that the local arts scene is a steely fighter, muscled with depth, courage, and, of course, raw, edge-of-yourseat, astonishing talent.

There are local and legendary favorites: Mark Bryan showing at the Steynberg Gallery or Variable Velocity arousing the senses with footsteps.

Diana Stanton’s dance company will stick to your ribs all year.

Get “Stoked” in Shell Beach, go wild for wildflowers in Santa Margarita, Purim your Palooza off in downtown SLO, or open your mind in the back of moving trucks during New Times’ own “Box City.” Even Arroyo Grande has something interesting happening this year: The town is turning 100 years

old, with several artsy events surrounding the centennial celebration in July.

Some happenings are so topsecret I was asked to not write about them. You’ll just have to explore to find them.

Sheryl Crow brings her pretty face and popular tunes to Avila in May. There’s a SLO Jazz festival this year in September.

A new “Thursday at 1 p.m.” concert series starts up this week at Cuesta College. And don’t forget about Pozo Saloon and its upcoming shows, always crowd-pleasers.

Elle Woods graces us with her presence in the stage version of Legally Blonde. See local standup comedy for $5 every month in SLO. The Pewter Plough Playhouse has finally re-opened its doors … … and it goes on and on.

For the love of the lonely Rossini’s Le Comte Ory shows in SLO on April 10 at 2 p.m. This vocally dazzling comedy stars bel canto sensation Juan Diego Flórez in the title role of this Met premiere production. He vies with mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato, in the trouser role of Isolier, for the love of the lonely Countess Adèle, sung by soprano Diana Damrau.

EARTH DAY 2011 kicks off with a spring equinox event from 2-5pm on March 20.

The actual day of celebration takes place on April 23. “Growing the Village” goes green from 10am-5pm at El Chorro Regional Park and the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden.

ARROYO GRANDE CENTENNIAL EVENTS celebrate all that is A.G. during its 100th birthday. May 28-29: The annual and hugely popular Strawberry Festival features activities and entertainment; the Strawberry Stampede; hundreds of art, craft, and display booths; ethnic foods;

scrumptious strawberry treats; and live music. A Century Bike Ride is June 25, with a bandstand area with live music, vendor booths, and a BMX exhibition area.
