isit Portugal. Pet musical instruments. Learn about St. Anthony. Travel back in time 400 years. Get intimate with William Shakespeare and Amadeus Mozart. Run in the dunes. Eat risotto, slurp up oysters, quaff martinis, sip wine, taste chili, and drink strawberry beer. Partake in these adventures, and more, as summer comes knocking in 2011. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that we have a lot going on. Summer brings out the event planner in everyone. This time of year evokes emotion and nostalgia, like certain holidays or birthdays. Remember running through your dad’s oscillating sprinkler as a kid, or barbecuing late into the evening in your backyard with friends and family? Whole days were scheduled around these very things.
Choose summer, choose
fun
Sprawled on a blanket gazing up at the stars, I seem to remember a lot of weekend trips involving lakes, boats, and inner tubes. A Slip ’n Slide made a yearly appearance. Nowadays, summer activities are more sophisticated, offering so much for all sorts of folks, yet in a scope just as lovely. And what about camps? Summer is really about the kids and filling

their days. Do your kids want to surf, ride horses, learn French, or become a rock star? It’s all there for the taking. I’ll tell you another little secret: Your local library is a gold mine. Each branch has more going on than the next. There are summer reading programs, movies, and tons of free, live entertainment with some of the best performers our local culture has to offer. Another interesting aspect of summer activities in Santa Barbara County are the local education outlets and organizations that will astound you with all they have to offer. And what about the adults? Driving up and down the Central Coast, you will be hard pressed to not come across a weekly concert series in any given town, in any given park, at the beach, or at a winery. There’s so much to do in fact, we couldn’t list it all in the guide. Keep your eyes open for upcoming events, and feel free to contact the Sun or New Times.

Don’t forget to check the online calendar for even more goings-on. Find it at santamariasun.com. And I know what you’re thinking. All over the Central Coast? But I don’t wanna drive! Gas prices! Funyun prices! I feel you. I proclaim Bike Month is all summer, so get out of your gas-guzzling car, and get on your beach cruiser. Don’t forget the blanket and friends. And these rules: Choose life. Choose fun. Choose summer. ❍ Christy Heron is calendar editor for New Times, the Sun’s sister paper to the north. What is Angels
Foster Care?
We are a 501(c)3 public charity, operating as a foster family agency in Santa Barbara County. Angels is licensed by the state of California to recruit, screen, train and certify foster families. Children placed with our foster families are stabilized in one home with a full-time parent for the duration of their stay in the dependency system. Our primary goal is to prevent attachment disorders in the children we serve.
The Foster Care Crisis
Hundreds of abused, abandoned and neglected babies and toddlers in Santa Barbara County face an unknown fate each year. Because of an overburdened foster system, many of these children are moved from one home to another before they take their first step, and many suffer physically and emotionally. Without individual and consistent attention, they incur problems that may plague them, and society, throughout their lives. But with your help, a local child’s life can be changed forever.
Why
choose
Angels? A recent Harvard Medical School study (June 2008) revealed that children who are placed by private foster family agencies like Angels have significantly better physical and mental health outcomes. The Angels program facilitates bonding and attachment and provides access to top quality medical care and developmental support.
Where do Angels babies come from?
Santa Barbara County’s Child Welfare Services calls us when they have a baby or toddler that was removed from his or her home due to neglect, abuse or abandonment. Because we know our families very well, we are able to match each child with a waiting Angels foster family.
Why become a foster parent?
Have you ever wondered what you could do to help others who are less fortunate than yourself? By simply nurturing a child’s emotional, social and intellectual growth, you can impart a child with a lifelong gift: the ability to trust, empathize, engage, bond and love. Babies and children bring a unique and lasting sense of joy and fulfi llment. With the help of dedicated people like you who can provide a safe, nurturing environment, most formerly abused or neglected children enjoy positive, accomplished adult lives. Supporting a child in crisis offers the chance to enrich a child’s life while discovering riches in your own. Consider becoming an Angels foster parent and help create permanent, lifelong connections for a deserving young child. 2
ANGELS FOSTER CARE
What is Angels looking for in a
foster family? • A FULL-TIME PARENT
• COMMITMENT to caring for an Angels child until he or she is out of the dependency system, a process that typically takes about 12 months • A FAMILY willing to take only one foster child or sibling group • Both FOSTER-ONLY & FOSTER-TO-ADOPT placements are available

The Gift of
LAU RE N L
auren came into our lives after a long journey of infertility. Although we had been fortunate enough to have one biological child, we still had a deep longing for another child. When we began researching adoption possibilities, we found Angels through an article in a local newspaper. We thought the program sounded promising, and immediately signed up for the training program.
Did you
know?
• Foster families remain completely CONFIDENTIAL and are not required to have any contact with their foster child’s birth family. Family visits are facilitated by social workers. • Yes, DATE NIGHTS are possible and encouraged! Foster families may use a trusted babysitter 18 years or older (no fi ngerprinting necessary).
• Angels foster families may TRAVEL with their foster child. • Foster families remain completely ANONYMOUS and are not required to have any contact with their foster child’s birth family. Family visits are facilitated by social workers.
Angels called soon after to say that a baby girl was available. Lauren’s parents were homeless and had walked into a local hospital to deliver. As a newborn, Lauren tested positive for drug exposure but was otherwise healthy. Due to her parents’ neglect, she was removed from their care by Child Welfare Services. Angels asked us if we were ready for a placement and we knew the time was right for our family. Our four-year-old daughter was excited and wanted to help care for the newborn baby. Everyone adjusted easily and our extended family fell in love with Lauren immediately. For the first few months, we concentrated on nurturing her while the court offered treatment and support to Lauren’s parents. When they failed to follow their court-mandated plan, we knew that our dream of adoption might become a reality.
• Foster children are adopted through CLOSED ADOPTIONS. • A family court judge determines a permanent plan for each foster child within 12 months. If the child is available for adoption, and your family is interested, Angels will support you through the process. There is NO CHARGE to adopt through the Angels program.
“Angels provides the total package of care for children that are at a uniquely vulnerable point in their lives.” -Lisa Fritz Attorney, Santa Barbara Dependency Court
Foster parent certification includes: • A home study a family assessment • Fingerprint and child abuse index clearance • Physical exam and T.B. test
• Current auto insurance and driver’s license • Completion of a parent-training program, which is scheduled into several sessions totaling 24 hours • A home study • Completion of MMPI-2 psychological screening
From training to materials to mentoring, Angels provides you with the tools and support to make your fostering experience a rewarding one. Your Angels social worker will make visits to assist your family, monitor everyone’s progress, coordinate family reunification visits, attend court hearings on your family’s behalf and facilitate support groups that you can attend.
Lauren is now a bright, curious, sociable toddler who is meeting all of her developmental milestones. Our Angels social worker and pediatrician have supported us throughout this process, and we feel prepared for the future. As adoptive parents, we can’t believe our good fortune at being matched with this intelligent and beautiful child. Our hope for anyone considering adoption, or anyone who wants to help a child, is to open your heart to the possibilities through foster care. There is no experience more fulfilling! –Anonymous Goleta family. Lauren’s name was changed to protect her privacy. ANGELS FOSTER CARE
