I’ve got the blues
If I’m feeling blue, I like to listen to the blues and eat some Wheaties and chicken wings. Nothing says “I’ve felt things!” like a good blues song and a bucket of teary chicken. Some blues will make you happy, however, and the good people at the Avila Beach Blues Festival are ready to prove this on May 26 when they bust out the 20th annual best blues show on the Central Coast. This year will feature the Steve Miller Band (pictured above), Elvin Bishop Band, and Carolyn Wonderland. Gates open at noon. Tickets cost $55 for general admission and $95 for V.I.P. treatment. The Avila Beach Blues Festival will be held at the Avila Beach Golf Course, 6464 Ana Bay Road, in Avila Beach. For more info, visit avilabeachpier.com/events. —Maeva Considine

I think the saying goes, “One tequila, two tequila, three tequila … floor.” I wouldn’t know because tequila and I haven’t been friends since that night I spent passed out on the fire escape in college. But I want to change all that! On May 25 I’ll get my chance at the second annual Avila Beach Tequila Festival at the Avila Beach Golf Course. There will be tequila, tequila cocktails, Mexican beers, Mexican cuisine, and kickin’ music (Kinky pictured below) from noon to 4 p.m. This event just can’t be a bummer for me with all that music and tequila floating around. The Tequila Festival is a 21-and-older event. General admission is $45. Tickets are available at vallitix.com. For more info, visit avilabeachconcerts.com —M.C.

It’s another year and another opportunity to stuff your face with nature’s sugary contribution to our happiness: strawberries. The Strawberry Festival is back for its 30th year on May 25 and May 26. There will be booths, a Strawberry Stampede, a carnival, rides, games, contests, and, of course, food. The activities kick off with the Strawberry Stampede on May 25 at 8 a.m. There is free parking and a shuttle from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on both days. The Strawberry Festival takes place annually in the Village of Arroyo Grande. You can download a full schedule of events and get other details at arroyogrande village.org/strawberry_fest.shtml. —M.C.

Barrels of fun PHOTO COURTESY OF THE CENTRAL COAST SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL
Prep for July’s bardy blast “All the word’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players … .” Shakespeare said that once. I wasn’t there for it, but I’m sure it was epic. A lot of things Shakespeare wrote are still with us today! Thank goodness the fine folks at the Central Coast Shakespeare Festival want to keep the spirit of The Bard alive, and each year they put on performances of his finest works (Katherine Perello is pictured as Ariel in last year’s The Tempest.) This year you can enjoy Love’s Labour’s Lost in the great outdoors at the River Oaks Amphitheatre in Paso Robles from July 11 through 27. Tickets cost $20 for general admission, $18 for students and seniors, and $13 for children 12 and younger. The River Oaks Amphitheatre is at 800 Lake Shore Ln. in Paso Robles. Yes, this event doesn’t happen until July, but buy your tickets early. For more info, visit centralcoast shakespeare.org. —Maeva Considine
Forget drinking boxes of wine … from June 20 to 23 there will be barrels of wine in the San Luis Obispo Mission Plaza for the 23rd annual “Roll Out The Barrels” summer celebration. The events kick off on Thursday evening with “Barrels in the Plaza.” There will be wines from all over San Luis Obispo County and over the weekend you can get your hands on a two-day passport that will give you access to more than 20 wineries. The events on Saturday and Sunday run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are $30 to $180. For more info, visit slowine.com. —M.C.

A poor miller tries to impress the royal cousin by boasting untruthfully that his beautiful daughter can turn straw into gold. When the girl is locked in a room with a spinning wheel and some straw to accomplish this task, a strange little man appears and entices the young maiden to promise him her first-born child if he assists her. July May the 4th be with you
Pier into some fireworks
The Pismo Beach Pier is the perfect spot to watch some pyrotechnics fly into this great nation’s night skies. This year promises great food, music, and, of course, a grand fireworks display. Come out to the Pismo Pier between 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. for a day full of independent fun. For more info, call the Pismo Beach Chamber of Commerce at 443-7778, or go to pismochamber.com. V.I.P. seating on the pier is available for $25 a ticket. —Maeva Considine

When I was a kid, the best parts of the 4th of July celebration were watching my uncle accidentally light his jeans on fire, and then watching my aunt try to put him out. Thankfully, there are plenty of options that allow us to watch fireworks on the Central Coast without burning through our good jeans. Cambria’s annual 4th of July celebration is held at Shamel Park 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. with fun family events, music, and barbecue all day long. The fireworks display begins at dusk and will light up the sky for miles along the coast. Shamel Park is at 5455 Windsor Blvd. in Cambria. For more info on the festivities, call 927-5010, or visit cambriachamber.org. —M.C.

A 4th to be reckoned with
The 4th of July Fireworks Display and Sand Sculpture Contest in Cayucos is a perfect way to celebrate our independent beaches and sand castles. Yes, I believe you should claim independence … even with sandcastles. There will be a sand sculpting contest, parade, barbecue, bingo, and the ever necessary fireworks, all from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. in downtown Cayucos by the pier. For more information on the various events and start times throughout the day, visit cayucos chamber.com. —M.C.

Hits the Spot Yank Smith is a gruff, manly stoker working aboard a freighter. Mildred Douglas is a high society lady, who, through a twist of fate, is forced to travel as a passenger. When she happens upon the sweaty, hulking Yank working in the ship’s stokehole, Mildred is appalled by the behavior of the man she dismisses as a “hairy ape.” At first seething over this insult, Yank slowly begins to contemplate it, and after the ship docks, he seeks out the girl, determined to understand her harsh words. Starring Jake Liam McGuire, Nik Johnson, and Ellen Jones, Eugene O’Neil’s 1922 play The Hairy Ape takes the stage at Arroyo Grande’s The Spot, located at 116 W. Branch St. in the Village, from June 7-23. Tickets are $15-$20; visit the spotag.com or call 474-5711.
