GO TEAM!

W

e picked the theme for this year’s Best Of issue long before it became a political statement to say that nobody succeeds alone. We all get by with a little help from our friends, and any successful endeavor—from an award-winning restaurant to an annual publication highlighting favored shops and people—takes a team to become a reality. To celebrate the cooperation and camaraderie behind the creation of something great, we decided to build a group from the ground up, a group featuring members representing icons of Northern Santa Barbara County, from the fiery launches at Vandenberg Air Force Base to the colorful produce grown on so many fields. Artist Irene Flores created the characters who converged to present this best Best Of issue ever: Berry explores local cuisine in Wine, Dine, and Devour [6]. Dancer moves her way through the world of Arts and Entertainment [27]. Rocket blasts off, taking shopping to a Burnin’ Cash experience [32]. Plover kicks back and relaxes in Feelin’ Good [47]. And Cowboy keeps an eye on area happenings in Community on my Mind [55]. See more of Irene’s work at beanclamchowder.com. Thanks to her, this Best Of is a visual treat. Also, thanks to the writers, designers, our photographer, the vote-counters, the account executives and managers, the readers who made their voices known, and the winners—and all hard-working folks in this area—without whom this issue wouldn’t happen.

Kay’s Country Kitchen 135 E. CLARK AVE., ORCUTT

If you had one too many of Rooney’s fine brews, then the “Too Much to Drink Last Night?” omelet from Kay’s Orcutt Country Kitchen is the cure to your hangover the next morning. It’s stuffed with diced chicken-fried steak and bacon, smothered in jack cheese and sausage and bacon gravy—you’ll be feeling fine again in no time. Complete with a breakfast bar, copper accents, comfortable booths, and a friendly staff, Kay’s is one of Old Town Orcutt’s hidden gems. Owner and mother of four, the legendary “Kay” wanted to create a restaurant that feels like home, where her guests can come in and enjoy wholesome, down-home food in a cozy atmosphere. Kay said her key to success over the years has been her coworkers. “They all feel the same as me, they love their jobs,” Kay said. “We want people to feel that warmth when they walk in the door.” —Kristina Sewell

Coldstone Creamery 4869 S. BRADLEY ROAD, SANTA MARIA About a month ago, a local sorbet enthusiast walked into the Coldstone in Santa Maria and asked for one of the weirdest concoctions manager Miguel Saucedo has ever heard of. “They wanted sorbet—strawberry, mango, and banana— mixed with Oreos, chocolate shavings, Reese’s, and Kit Kat,” he recalled. “They took a tub home. It was a whole half gallon.” Saucedo said it didn’t sound very appetizing to him, but he made it anyway. That’s part of why Coldstone is so popular: The ice cream makers will mix whatever people’s hearts and stomachs desire. Another reason, Saucedo said, is that “we make our product fresh here daily, and it has a soft and creamy texture.” —Amy Asman

Frozen juice concentrates are superior to bottled or boxed juices because they retain more of their natural vitamins, color, flavor, and enzymes than juices, which are heat pasteurized and then bottled or boxed. Plus, all of the blended juices are 100 percent juice with no added sugars or preservatives. Yum! —Amy

BEST LOCAL RED WINE

Rancho Sisquoc 6600 FOXEN CANYON ROAD, SANTA MARIA Rancho Sisquoc has one of the most eclectic assortments of wine on the Central Coast. The winery and vineyard bottles both whites and reds, but the latter specifically pleased the palates of locals this year, who voted them best: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cellar Select (a mix of several reds), Malbec, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Merlot, and Tre Vini (a trio of reds). According to the winery’s website, many of the wines have received awards and accolades, including the 2010 Pinot Noir, which won gold in the New World International Wine Competition, the West Coast Wine Competition, and more. “Deep ruby in color with a smooth nose full of strawberry, this Pinot is true to its terroir of the Santa Maria Valley,” winemaker Alec Franks said in the vintage’s wine notes. —Amy

Cambria Estate Winery 5475 CHARDONNAY LANE, SANTA MARIA

When I was a senior at Cal Poly in SLO, I spent a semester studying in New York City. I lived in an apartment on the Lower East Side with a bunch of other exchange students. On most Friday nights, my friends and I would pile into one of our rooms to watch romantic comedies and drink wine. The week it was my turn to buy, I walked to the local liquor store to pick up a bottle. I scoured the shelves for a Central Coast vintage because, as we all know, Central Coast wine is the best. Lo and behold, I found a bottle of Cambria Estate Winery Chardonnay on the bottom shelf. The label was a welcome sight to my homesick eyes, and the sweet, chilled beverage an enjoyable addition to our weekly festivities. So, thank you, Cambria, for giving me a little piece of the Central Coast in the Big Apple. —Amy

Costa De Oro 1331 S. NICHOLSON AVE., SANTA MARIA

Have you ever had beer on a nitrogen tap system? How about wine? Right off Highway 101, the Costa De Oro tasting room is the place to go if you want to try nitrogen-infused wine. “We have a lot of high-end accounts in Hawaii and California that do nitrogen [kegs], so I thought why not do it in the tasting room?” owner Gary Burk said. The winery uses a “bull dog” pump to gently push nitrogen into five-gallon kegs of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet, and more. “You can’t use CO2 because it dissolves into the wine,” Burk

Gina’s Piece of Cake

714 S. Broadway, Santa Maria

307 town Center eaSt, Santa Maria

Everyone knows about the famous tri-tip at Shaw’s Steakhouse, but Sun readers say their margaritas are the best, too. Named the “Cadillac Margarita,” it’s made with Sauza Hornitos tequila, Cointreau triple sec, and Grand Marnier in a pint glass. It’s called a Cadillac because it’s basically a double, top shelf margarita. Shaw’s bar manager Lorene White said with a smile, “You’re gonna feel real good after this.” Feeling fabulous after sipping the sweet and sour libation, I floated out the door. White called out after me, “My mojitos are out of control too, not to brag!” Believe it. —Wendy Thies Sell

4869 S. BRadlEy Road, SuitE 101, oRCutt

In Santa Maria, Klondike Pizza patrons get the distinct pleasure of chowing down on an Italian classic in a thoroughly Alaskan setting. For 17 years, Irvin Kiger has been serving up fresh pizza in a town dominated by tri-tip. So what makes Klondike Pizza the best? Kiger said his restaurant offers consistently good service and excellent food. “We use fresh veggies daily, and we make our pizza dough here daily,” he said. There’s another commodity that’s popular, but it doesn’t make it onto the pizza: peanuts. They’re free to eat—“we just ask that people don’t throw them at each other. Just throw the shells on the floor,” Kiger said. —Amy

Sun readers are crazy for the salsa at Burrito Loco! “There are no secret ingredients,” said manager Felix, who did reveal to the Sun the list of what goes into Burrito Loco’s winning signature salsa: cilantro, cumin, oregano, salt, pepper, and canned tomatoes. Why so popular? “Probably because of the freshness,” Felix said. “Every day we make new batches of salsa. That’s probably the main reason people love it.” People are so crazy for Burrito Loco’s salsa, the restaurant in Orcutt’s Acorn Shopping Center sells it in three different-sized containers, ranging from 6 to 32 ounces. —Wendy

Artichokes, mushrooms, quail, shrimp, and fresh fish, but we are most famous for the beef steaks. Most popular are the filet mignon and New York steak. Henry Asencio When Henry Asencio says his work focuses on the human figure, he means it. Just type his name into Google; you’ll find page after page of female forms: sitting, standing, lying down, arms in the air, arms folded over tousled hair, arms modestly clutching draped fabric or dramatically flung to either side. The artist, who splits his time between Santa Maria and San Jose studios, isn’t afraid to portray serious skin, but he has an angle that keeps his work from strictly mirroring what we see. He incorporates abstract elements that convey emotion, passion, “anything positive or negative you can feel but not touch,” he said. “The essence of my work,” he explained, “is the human condition and the nobility of the human figure and all its splendor.” His evocative works show in more than 60 galleries around the world; locals who want to see an original will have to gas up the car and head to L.A. or the Bay Area. But as far reaching as Asencio’s talent is now, the self-taught painter loves his Santa Maria roots and the friends and family who’ve supported him. —Ryan

But, as they say in the biz, the show must go on: “We’ll be bringing a production of Fiddler on the Roof up to the Clark Center in Arroyo Grande in the spring and taking two shows, Monty Python’s Spamalot and Cyrano de Bergerac, exclusively to the Solvang Festival Theater in the summer,” Booher said. Santa Maria Valley Discovery Museum 705 S. There are lots of places to play, and stations where children learn about pet care, healthy foods, agriculture, and fossils. Mega 97.1 Mega971.coM Mega 97.1 knows exactly who’s listening. The station’s demographic is largely made up of women who sit in an office most of the day and want some upbeat tunes to groove to while they type or push paper. That’s why the station plays upbeat R&B and oldies from the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s. Listeners will hear Santana; Michael Jackson; and Earth, Wind, and Fire, said Station Manager Ed Carcarey, who also goes by the title “Station Bouncer.” “If you go to a wedding and at the reception when they play the music that everyone wants to get up and dance to and party to, that’s us,” he said. The format works for its listeners, as well as a good many Sun readers. That’s why Mega 97.1 was voted Best Radio Station. Carcarey attributes the honor not only to the music the station plays, but also to its overall approach to radio. “We try to keep it pure to what radio should be: live and local. We’re out on the street at least a couple of times a week. We have live jocks, and we’re out in the community,” Carcarey said. —Shelly

You probably didn’t know that at one point, Jay Turner, with his enthusiasm and passion for country radio, never would have considered becoming a country radio host. “When I was at working for the California Top 40 radio station, I had country radio thrust upon me,” he explained. After three months, he discovered that he liked country music because it’s real and accessible. Now, 12 years later, Turner can’t think of any other place he’d rather be. Like every other kid, he grew up wanting to be a fireman, a cop, or a rock star. In high school, he decided he needed to be involved in the music business somehow; he’s been in radio since he was 19 years old. What Turner loves most about his job is the people: “I’m getting to do the best people job in the world,” he said. “I get to satisfy people’s needs and desires.” —Kristina

One of the biggest barriers to getting in shape is the drudgery of repetitive workouts. At Central Coast CrossFit, certified trainers will get you off the exercise machines and into full-body, high-intensity group workouts with an emphasis on free movement. Owner Chad Franco said CrossFit’s class atmosphere is more motivating than the typical gym and builds that all-important camaraderie needed to pursue athletic goals. “It’s like working out with your friends,” he said. “Everyone becomes a pretty tight-knit group and hangs out together and does other athletic and outdoor things outside of the gym.” Military members, firefighters, and others who demand more from their bodies swear by CrossFit’s intense strength and conditioning program, which includes powerlifting, gymnastics, sprinting, kettlebells, tire flips, and more. “We mix up all of those different aspects of fitness and movements into different workouts that vary through the weeks and months so it’s constantly changing,” Franco said. “You never see the same thing.” CrossFit offers hour-long group sessions Monday through Saturday, with private personal training sessions available by appointment —Jeremy

There’s a miniature castle to explore and kid-sized tables for playing and writing. He is open six days a week and accepts most insurance plans, including MediCal, Cencal, and Healthy Families. He and his staff are bilingual, and Ikola personally rewards each patient with stickers and pencils. A pediatrician for 23 years, he was raised in Santa Maria and loves working with young families. “Now I’m treating children of former patients!” he laughed. “I enjoy watching them grow and hearing them say, ‘You’ve been taking care of me since I was born!’ It makes me feel old!” Don’t worry, Doc—you’re still a kid at heart! —Ariel

801 S. College Drive, Santa Maria • 993 PatterSon roaD, orCutt Finding a quality program to care for your child is stressful for most parents. That’s why so many moms and dads turn to the Allan Hancock College Parent Participation Preschool for 2- to 5-year-olds. The program offers two state-licensed childcare environments—one on the Santa Maria campus and the other in Orcutt. The program supports the development of children while getting parents involved by having them devote a minimum of 80 semester hours as program participants. It also functions as a lab site for college students enrolled in early childhood studies courses, so it’s not just child care—it’s helping educate future generations! —Shelly

Coldwell Banker Premier Real Estate 2540 PROFESSIONAL PARKWAY, SANTA MARIA While the real estate agents of Coldwell Banker are competitive when it comes to selling homes, underneath it all they’re cheerleaders for each other’s success. Agents compare their office to an extended family, led by a supportive management team that encourages them to become leaders in the real estate industry. “Someone is always willing to lend an ear to a problem in a transaction and brainstorm a way to get it solved,” one agent wrote. “From tackling the technology problems that inevitably occur, to greeting our clients and guests with a warm hello as they walk in the door, our fantastic support staff goes the extra mile to ensure our office runs smoothly.” —Jeremy

From age 18 to 32, local teacher Darlene Adams made use of her business degree as an accountant. Then one day, she decided she was tired of business and wanted a job with more creativity. She ventured back to school where she earned her multiple subject credentials from the University of Phoenix to become a teacher. Adams has been a teacher for six years, going on her third year as a teacher at Benjamin Foxen, where she teaches fourthand fifth-grade students. Adams said that the most important thing she tries to teach her students is work ethic—and preparing them for reality. “I want the kids to relate what they are doing in school to real life; treat it like a job,” she said. When she isn’t teaching, she researches new curriculums with her sister (also a teacher). “I’m open-minded to try new things,” Adams said. “I love to learn more about how to become a better teacher.” —Kristina

Deputy Paul Lie

Santa BarBara County Sheriff’S Department An 11-year veteran of the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department, working out of the Santa Maria substation for the past five years, Deputy Paul Lie is the consummate professional. Whether he’s out on patrol, training junior officers, or performing his duties as a gang liaison, Lie said he loves what he does and couldn’t ask for a better job. “I think I’m a hard worker,” he said. “I respect this community, and I think they respect me as well. You strive to serve and protect the community, and I think people notice that.” Lie added his thanks to Sun readers— not only for recognizing him, but also for appreciating the work law enforcement does as a whole. —Jeremy

Sun readers consistently give this category to Andy Caldwell—executive director of COLAB Santa Barbara County and host of the Andy Caldwell Show on AM 1440 on weekday afternoons. But as a watchdog, who is he dogging? What is he watching? He explained in an e-mail that he keeps an eye out when it comes to “opportunities for people to become upwardly mobile, their rights to be protected, and government policies to be grounded in fact, reason, and cost benefit analysis.” He went on to explain the importance of community watchdogs: “Most people are too busy trying to make a living to go to these meetings and follow these issues and causes. And the media doesn’t always recognize the importance and the impacts, nor do they spend enough time and space on the same. We fill a niche. I work for a true grassroots coalition that does not get any money from government, nor do we get funded by people outside of the local community.” —Ryan

Humans are creatures of habit; we go with what works. At the Boys and Girls Club of the Santa Maria Valley, family and familiarity are the keys to maintaining a trusted and successful league. “I see a lot of returning coaches and parents who have multiple kids—one leaves and the other comes in,” said club sports director Ernie Cuevas. “It’s pretty neat.” The club offers two leagues throughout the year. The regular season runs from December to February, and another for junior high and high school takes the court in April. There’s also a summer league in Orcutt in June. What keeps families coming back, according to league officials, is that parents can keep kids involved in sports without breaking the bank. “We appreciate the support year after year from parents who continue to bring their kids out to participate and the coaches who volunteer their time,” Cuevas said. “Without coaches, there is no league.” —Jeremy

BEST AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM

Santa Maria YMCA 3400 Skyway Drive, Santa maria

For working-class parents with children, afterschool programs are a blessing. Programs that are safe and teach life lessons are even better. The Santa Maria YMCA collaborates with the Santa Maria-Bonita School District through the ASES program. With nine different programs offered every school day from 2 to 6 p.m., the YMCA and district are keeping kids safe and getting them off the streets. The students work with volunteer tutors who are former high school and college students. The program provides a snack, a meal, help with homework, and arts and crafts. It also works with Marian Medical Center, which sends a representative from the hospital to teach kids about health, nutrition, and exercise. The program serves about 500 kids each year and is in its fifth year of operation. YMCA Childcare Director for summer camp/after school programs, Dana McNutt, said that above all they want to provide a safe place for kids: “They are learning on a different level; they learn life lessons they can take with them.” —Kristina

Boys and Girls Club of the Santa Maria Valley 901 N. RailRoad ave., SaNta MaRia The Boys and Girls Club of the Santa Maria Valley is all about kids. Since 1966, more than 40,000 have come through the doors for sports and educational programs. Executive Director Bill Libbon, who’s been involved with the club for 38 years, said the impact it’s made on local youth is obvious. “We do a lot of positive programs, not just in the west side of Santa Maria, but the whole community, including Orcutt and Guadalupe,” he said. “We’re very thankful to the community for supporting the club and our programs over the years, and for voting for us, of course.” Boasting 4,000 members and 500 volunteers between three local clubs, the organization’s most popular programs are sports (especially basketball and flag football).
