ielding a camera—whether digital or film—is all about capturing light. The

rays of sun as it sets. The pops of brightness that midday brings. The soft glow of a cloudy day. For 20 years, the New Times Media Group has invited local photographers to show us the way they see the light of day or the darkness of night in our annual Winning Images contest. This year brought in 366 photos, which our judges narrowed down to three winners each in eight categories and three judges’ picks. Each of those entries also came in with a $5

as well as receiving several honorable mentions. His favorite image she entered was an entry into the adult category: Frame of Reference. It’s a black and white photograph of a car abandoned in the California ghost town of Bodie. It was the last place they visited over Father’s Day weekend, before Marynn returned to Austin, Texas. “She left behind a body of photographic work in her short 24 years that most would be unable to create in a lifetime,” Vilarino wrote. This year, we give out the awards for our youth category in Marynn Vilarino’s honor.

s the first ballot for Winning Images hit the papers this year, we received a letter from a man named Ron Vilarino. His daughter Marynn visited him over Father’s Day weekend, and he just couldn’t take enough photographs of her. “I kept shooting several photographs of her,” he wrote. Three weeks later, she died in an auto accident. She was 24 years old. When she was a teenager, she entered photographs into the New Times Winning Images contest, winning the youth category

The 2015 Judges Brittany App is a professional photographer and self-proclaimed vagabond. After 13 years of owning App’s Photography in SLO Town, for her the whole business comes down to one thing: people. She loves them and she loves to photograph their stories, heartaches, celebrations, children, and everything else that defi nes a life. See her work at appsphotography.com.

San Luis Obispo native and perennial Winning Images judge Peggy Mesler is a photographer and owner of The Photo Shop in SLO, where she shares her appreciation and knowledge of photography with customers, clients, and friends. Peggy graduated with a journalism degree from Cal Poly, and opened her shop in 1995. Mesler’s favorite thing to photograph is people.

Kaori Funahashi spent the last year of her life photographing everything New Times Media Group editorial staffers could think up—people, buildings, grapes, food, and anything else that makes the Central Coast tick. She’s a badass triathlete and recently left us to pursue her specialty: adventure and sport photography. She has a bachelor’s degree in art and design photography from Cal Poly.
