2006 Feast your eyes on this Winning Images is looking good BY RYAN MILLER

E

verything’s new at New Times this year: the editor, the staff photographer, the best-of-show winner. Yes, the 11th annual Winning Images contest has arrived, brought to bear by a group of people who never brought such a thing to bear before. But still, here it is. More than 60 images rose to the surface of 526 entries, thanks to help from this year’s judges: Deborah Denker (last year’s Best of Show winner and a professional photographer), Doug Highland (head of the Cuesta College photography department), Holly Peterson (a local photographer), and Jesse Acosta (New Times’ very own staff photographer). The group struggled and sweated and turned a critical eye on shot after shot. Fueled by dinner from Mama’s Meatball, they gazed on row upon row of fantastic photos. In the end, after debating and tallying—and with logistical help from Shelby Kapka and myself—the winners emerged. We extend thanks to all who entered, and a particular nod to office manager Michael Antonette, who handled each photo as it came in. Enjoy! ∆
