Lens and outs Big changes shook up the annual New Times Winning Images contest BY RYAN MILLER

A

s 2009’s Winning Images evening came to a close, staff photographer and contest coordinator Steve E. Miller dropped a bomb: 2010’s contest would be radically different. For the first time in years, the popular competition would get a radical overhaul. This year, he made good on his threat. Or promise. Or however local photographers chose to see it. Gone were the professional and amateur divisions. Everyone who entered would be competing on the same ground. The “kids” category was cut, but two new categories—“sports” and “manmade” fi lled the void. New Times announced the changes, and then the staff waited. Would San Luis Obispo

County respond with love? Hate? Disinterest? At fi rst, it seemed as if the new game drove photographers away. Entries trickled in, one or two at a time. But photographers are apparently procrastinators, and by the final seconds of the deadline—literally— we were sitting on about 600 entries. We celebrated the winners with a party at Steynberg Gallery— thanks, Peter!—the night before this issue hit the streets. Couldn’t attend? Don’t worry: See the winners at Steynberg Gallery, 1531 Monterey St., in downtown San Luis Obispo. ∆ Contact Executive Editor Ryan Miller at rmiller@newtimesslo.com.

JOSEPHINE CRAWFORD Josephine Crawford was born in 1937 in England; from an early age, she knew she was only interested in music, dancing, designing, and painting. Her childhood was spent at a boarding school for the arts in England. At age 16, she left school and got a job dancing. She spent the next 20 years dancing professionally, designing costumes for about 10 years, and painting for the last 30 years. Her work is difficult to categorize, but if pressed, she would call it expressionistic. She’ll have a 30-year retrospective at SLOMA in 2011.
