EDITORIAL
What Would You Do? by Tracey Stewart Everyone seems to talk about the new ABC television show “What Would You Do”, and about the scenarios and how people react to them. On one night, they spent half of the show with a situation that involved an actor trying to steal someone’s dog outside of a coffee shop. Each attempt was interrupted by good citizens and the pet remained safe. The other half of the show portrayed a teenager being physically and verbally abused by three or four other teens. Less than 10% of the people passing by on the busy boardwalk did anything about it. Many took pictures, pointed, and then walked away. Why are we afraid to get involved? What line needs to be crossed before we will move from being a bystander to one of ally or reporting party? Who do we think will step in, if we do not? Recently in Phoenix, 10 year old Ame Deal was found dead. Originally, it was thought to be a horrible accident during a game of hide and seek. New information indicates that she died in a padlocked box after being punished for taking a popsicle. She took the popsicle because the adults in the household regularly withheld food from her or chose to feed her feces. Police and reporters were told during their investigation that neighbors had witnessed ongoing mistreatment targeting Ame, a great deal of
which they categorized as physical and verbal abuse. It appears that her adult guardians had also been reported for abusing her in other states, but essentially kept her “hidden” from the system in Arizona by not registering her for school. If you saw a barefoot little girl being forced to walk on the scalding sidewalks in Phoenix for hours at a time, would you report it? What about if you saw her being hit, looking undernourished, and obviously not being home schooled or sent to school? WHAT WOULD YOU DO? The potential of this beautiful smiling little girl will never be known. We as individuals, and as a community, must do something to stop young lives from being damaged and extinguished. We need to open our eyes, hearts and minds to the situations around us, and stand up for those whose voices are not heard. If it looks like abuse or sounds like abuse, make a choice to stop it. You do not need to put yourself at risk in order to do this. A phone call, a photo, or some other use of our omnipresent technology can be done discreetly and safely. It is not being said to ignore the dog that is locked in the car, stolen or mistreated; rather that everyone take notice and ensure the same humane consideration for the children.
If you see or suspect a child is being abused call Child Abuse Hotline toll-free 1-888-SOS-CHILD (1-888-767-2445) or 911.

Equality Arizona names Nick Ray executive director Annual Dinner Gala set for Sept. 24 By Luis Garcia Equality Arizona is making news once again. The board of directors of the statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender political advocacy group has appointed former 1n10 leader Nick Ray as the organization’s Executive Director. Ray, who has served as a senior policy analyst with the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Policy Institute in New York City, told ‘N Touch News that his goal is to ensure LGBT Arizonans have a clear and powerful voice in the conversations about how that state will grow and change. “Our community deserves full and real equality, and while the political climate here might make that a tough battle, it is not one we can afford to skip,” said Ray. “I have shared my vision for how I might help Equality Arizona grow in ways that are reflective of the community’s needs and which respect the work that has come before. They know what my talents are and where my passions lie and I hope to apply both in partnership with the board. To work with people like Bill MacDonald and Kirk Baxter who have decades of concrete on-the-ground experience transforming this community is a rare opportunity for any professional like me, and I intend to learn from them as well as bring my new perspective to the table. When so many feel as though our community organizations are not working
effectively or collaboratively enough, I think it is worth emphasizing that the board would agree with me that no single board member should dictate how an organization develops, and neither should any executive director attempt to do so.” McDonald says that he is extremely pleased that the organization had the opportunity to hire Nick Ray as its executive director. “With Sam Holdren, our contract Public Relations Director, leaving to accept a great career advancement in Boston, the fact that a highly qualified person became available to step in and give us needed professional direction was most fortunate. Nick has the experience of being a successful executive director of an agency plus having worked in a public policy role with the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. I look forward to working with Nick to further advance the rights of LGBTQ Arizonans.” According to Ray, he will be taking extra time to listen and learn from those who came before him to avoid prior mistakes that might have been made and to ensure that the people are excited about partnering with Equality Arizona once again. “I have been through the tough organizational times during my work with both Wingspan and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, so I feel better prepared than many to weather the storm and to help right the ship afterwards,” said Ray.

“We’re not about to sit still, however, and dwell upon the past. We should not afford ourselves that ‘luxury’ because our opponents are certainly not resting on their laurels.” Ray’s next challenge will be Equality’s annual awards dinner recognizing corporate and community leaders who have stood for LGBT equality. A Salute to Service: Equality Arizona’s 20th Anniversary Benefit Gala will be held this year at historic Arizona Biltmore Hotel on Sept. 24. “This is a terrific opportunity to support the only organization working statewide to secure, protect and defend the rights and welfare of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Arizona. It really is important to support their critical work, especially in the face of such a hostile political climate,” says Ray. Receiving the Barry Goldwater Human Rights Individual Award will be Neil Giuliano, former Mayor of Tempe and former President of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). Giuliano is currently serving as CEO of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and can truly be said to have impacted the LGBT movement on a national scale. On a local level EQAZ will honor Steve Berger with the Arizona Human Rights Foundation Individual Award. Berger has been a steadfast supporter and promoter of the Arizona Human Rights Foundation,
Equality Arizona and the community. Tracey Stewart and Gina Read, owners and publishers of ‘N Touch Magazine, will jointly receive the Arizona Human Rights Foundation Corporate Award in recognition of their outstanding efforts educating and informing the LGBT and allied communities throughout the state. Equality Arizona is offering an early-bird discount of $1,750 per table, or $175 per person at a table of ten, for reservations paid for by Aug. 26. “With One Voice”
Live contemporary rock inspired praise concert comes to the Valley By Luis Garcia The Praise Team at Community Church of Hope is set to rock Phoenix, Saturday, Sept. 17. The Praise Team brings their first ever Praise & Worship concert to the LGBTQ community. “With One Voice” will feature the church’s seven-member praise band as well as soloists from within the group. It promises to be a night to lift your spirit in song as well as listen to some great inspirational music that is different than what a typical churchgoer expects. To get attendees involved many of the songs lyrics will be displayed on large screens for audience participation. The Community Church of Hope Praise Team prides itself on its more contemporary rock driven influence playing a current, modern, upbeat style of praise and worship music that crosses over to several genres. “I think people are surprised when they come to Community Church of Hope, and hear our blend of music. Most think of organs and tambourines and singing out of hymnals,” says Amy Pennock (drummer/vocal). “We have a modern style that draws heavily from rock, pop and R&B. The use of special lighting effects such as fog, and club lighting enhances the music and atmosphere encouraging interaction with the Praise Team and audience.” Keyboard and vocalist Butch Lange says the special night will al-

low for a different atmosphere. “Being on a Saturday night allows us to add some special effects, a louder sound system and a chance to put our twist on some songs that will even excite those who normally attend Community Church of Hope. Saturday night is for everyone to experience the spirit of this amazing music, fellowship and pride in our community. People who check this out will come away from this event joyful, and fulfilled.” Pennock adds: “We want to blow the roof off this place, not just as a band, but together with our community.” The live concert is an opportunity for the community to celebrate spirituality together through music. “The Community Church of Hope Praise Band really helped me reclaim praise music in my life,” says Chris Fahrlander (guitar/vocal). “Praise music inspires me, lifts me up, calms me, and gives me hope, peace, joy and life. How could I not share it? How could I keep from singing?”
The band plays live every week exhibiting many years of musical talent. From Rev. Patrick Stout (keyboard) who started playing when he was 12, Robbynne Archia (lead vocal) winning awards and performing since age 5, to Lange, who worked with more than eight bands traveling all over the United States for 25plus years. “I have worked with a lot of bands in my years, but some of the best times have been performing with the talent right here at the church. All of them are so professional, accomplished, and willing to put a twist on the usual to create the unique,” said Lange. Bill Kelly (lead Vocal) came to Phoenix with MCC many years ago and has been performing with this band since their inception, which celebrated their 15th anniversary with Community Church of Hope in March. The band will be presenting “With One Voice” concert as a fundraiser for the Community Church of Hope. “Yes another fundraiser, it is what all non-profit organizations have to
do to stay afloat in this economy, but where else can you meet new people, find some great live music in our community, for only $10,” exclaimed Gail Sattler (guitar/vocal) adding, “I am excited to be able to turn it up a couple of notches for our community.” “With One Voice” was just recently added to Community Church of Hope’s concerts and special events series for 2011. “Once ‘N Touch agreed to cosponsor our event, we quickly placed it on our calendar for the middle of September, right when the nights start changing and the energy of the fall season is anticipated,” says Rev. Stout adding, “‘N Touch magazine has been so supportive with not only what we do in the community, but with other organizations and events that celebrate and inform us all.” For those who have been driven away from “praise” churches this concert will have special significance. “I’m excited that we are giving the community a chance to experience a praise concert where everyone regardless of sexuality or spirituality can feel accepted and participate,” said Pennock. The concert will be held Saturday, Sept. 17, 7p.m. at Community Church of Hope. Please enter off of 6th Drive. Admission is $10. All proceeds to benefit the church. Tickets at the door, or advance tickets are available at the Church and at communitychurchofhope.com.

Know when to hold ‘em New league - The Alternative Poker Tour By Luis Garcia
PHOENIX - The Alternative Poker Tour wants to see your best poker face. One of the biggest crazes going on in the LGBT community right now is free Texas hold’em poker. The Rock, Bunkhouse, Cash Inn Country, and OZ have all come together to start a new league for poker enthusiasts and fans who want to learn the game for free. According to APT co-founder Bill Soroka, the resurgence of poker into mainstream life doesn’t stop
with the World Series of Poker or Poker After Dark on TV. “ATP provides a place to play for free at local gay and gay friendly establishments seven days a week,” said Soroka. “We have an incredible core group of bar venues right now. Free poker is basically a way and a reason for people to get out and socialize. Even people who don’t consider themselves ‘bar people’ can come out, even alone, and have a table full of friends by the end of
the night.” Soroka told ‘N Touch News that the all new league is committed to taking poker back to the player, ensuring fun tournaments, better point systems, and corporate sponsorship. “The key to a successful tour is a win/win philosophy from everyone involved. We’re partnering with venues who love to have poker players in their facility, and we have sponsors that want players to have a great time. And we at APT have promised to deliver players that support our venues and sponsors with an eat, drink, and be merry attitude.” OZ owner and poker player Kevin Tullock is really thrilled about joining with APT. “You have to know when to hold’em and know when to fold’em. I folded my N.P.T. hand and holding my A.P.T. hand close at heart.
A.P.T. is growing fast due to its flexibility to give the players and venues what they want. See you at the tables,” says Tullock. APT co-founder and Cash Inn poker host Victoria Michel told ‘N Touch News that the league will be successful because of all the great people involved in creating APT. “I am excited about partnering with some great people to get this league started and bring back the excitement of poker to our players who have stayed with us,” said Michel. “Our goal is to bring Texas hold’em to various venues over the next year, bring back the players and make this fun for everyone. Our venues will offer special tournaments, challenges and excitement so the players have something to look forward to wherever they play. “ For more information on the APT visit alternativepokertour. com
APT launched on August 1. Play for free 7 days a week at the following venues:

YOUTH
1n10 implements suicide prevention program In the past 18 years, 1n10 has grown from a very small, almost secretive meeting space to one of the largest organizations in the nation that specifically aims to serve lesbian, gay, bisexual, Transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth. The Phoenix-based non-profit organization envisions a world where all LGBTQ youth and young adults are embraced for who they are, and empower the youth to become thriving, active members of the community by providing them with leadership, recreational, and educational activities. 1n10 enhances the lives of the youth participants by not only providing these healthy and productive activities, but encourages selfexpression, self-acceptance, and self-growth in every aspect of the various programs created and implemented by the program staff and dedicated volunteers. In addition to sports activities, dancing/runway events, guest speakers, and community activism programs, 1n10 has recently developed its first suicide prevention program, led by Stacey Jay Cavaliere, who was hired in February as the organization’s Prevention Coordinator. The program specifically targets youth who have been affected or may be affected by suicide and suicidal ideation or depression. Aligned with 1n10’s programmatic goals and ideals, the suicide prevention curriculum is utilizing the Sources of Strength model. Sources of Strength is an empowerment-based, comprehensive wellness program that works to use peer leaders to change norms around codes of silence and help-seeking from trusted adults. The program is designed to increase help seeking behaviors and connections between peers and caring adults. Sources of Strength has a true preventative aim in building multiple sources of support around individuals so that when times get hard they have strengths to rely on. The goal of the program is to train youth in the Sources of Strength model and to provide them with the tools necessary to establish healthy, positive relationships with peers and adults alike. Jen Workman, 1n10 Program Coordinator states, “Our new suicide prevention program is essential to empowering LGBTQ youth, as it goes hand-in-hand with 1n10’s focus on building self-acceptance, peer support, riskreduction, peer mediation, community mentorship, empowerment, building self-esteem, and to embrace positive change. Suicide affects all of us, and LGBTQ Youth are at a disproportionate high risk. This new program provides the building blocks to potentially setting a new norm amongst our youth in preventing suicide”. On Saturday, July 16, twenty youth leaders and ten adult volunteers participated in the news / politics / business / opinion
Sources of Strength Peer Youth Leader Training. Scott LoMurray, national Sources of Strength trainer, conducted the four hour session which included games, empowerment activities, brainstorming sessions- and most importantly- valuable resources on the Sources of Strength suicide prevention model. The twenty youth leaders who were trained will now be qualified to lead future sessions for their peers, under the guidance of Cavaliere. The first peer-led session will occur at OUTdoors! Camp (Gay Camp) in September, where all camp participants who are 18-24 years old will participate in the suicide prevention workshop. “The aim of the program is to instill within the 1n10 youth the ideas of HOPE, HELP, and STRENGTH messages. My mission for 1n10’s suicide prevention training program is to provide the highest quality prevention program by training, supporting and empowering both peer lead-
ers and committed adult volunteers,” says Cavaliere. Micheal Weakley, Director of Programs at 1n10 adds, “LGBTQ youth across the country continue to be at the highest risk for suicide and suicidal ideation. Gay city commissioner re-elected to unprecendented 4th term By Joseph Gaxiola
SAN DIEGO - City Commissioner Nicole Murray-Ramirez made city history when he was re-elected the chair of the San Diego Human Relations Commission (HRC) for an unprecedented fourth term. The HRC comprises leaders from the religious, Latino, Asian-Pacific Islander, black and Native American communities appointed by the mayor and the City Council. Murray-Ramirez was appointed by then-Mayor Dick Murphy, and reappointed by Mayor Jerry Sanders. When first elected four years ago, he was the first openly gay man

elected as chair. Murray-Ramirez has served the last five mayors of San Diego, and was elected as the chair of the first mayor’s GLBT Advisory Board and the first GLBT Advisory Board to the chief of police. Murray-Ramirez has been a Latino and gay activist for 40 years and is a past national board member of the Human Rights Campaign, past national chair of LLEGO, the national chair of Stonewall 25, and the only gay activist in the country who has been elected to all four national boards of the marches on Washington, DC. He was also elected chair of the Millennium March. He is the past state chair of Equality California and is currently serving a four year term on the national board of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. He was also appointed by the county Board of Supervisors to the Regional Task Force on AIDS in the 1980’s and has served as a county deputy marriage commissioner. He has been honored for his work a number of times by the Latino community, including receiving the Cesar Chavez Humanitarian Award present by Chavez’s widow, Helen Chavez, and the Lifetime Achievement Award presented by
the Latino Unity Coalition. Nicole Murray-Ramirez has a big fondness for Arizona. During the late 1970’s Anita Bryant held an anti-gay, “Save Our Children”, rally in Tucson, Arizona. She stated that if she can host a rally in Tucson and fill up the arena then she would go to San Fransico to hold a huge rally there. Troy Perry, Nicole Murray-Ramirez and other LGBT activists were asked to speak at the Human Rights Rally which was to protest the “Save Our Children” event. Because of the Human Rights Rally the “Save Our Children” event was not a success and Anita Bryant never made it to San Fransico. “There aren’t that many of us activists who have been around for 30 to 40 years.” “If it wasn’t for people like Anita Bryant there wouldn’t have been a LGBT community or activists.” The people who are aginst the LGBT community actually bring us together to fight against them. Nicole Murray-Ramirez believes that the LGBT community also needs to build bridges with the Latino community. “The largest population growth in the United States is the Latino community.” They will be the ones in charge of the political forces in 15-20 years. If the LGBT community is expected to keep their rights they need to befriend the Latino community now. Over the years Nicole Murray-Ramirez has been to many LGBT Prides, Rallies, March on Washingtons and Protests. Lately he hasn’t been too happy on how things have been with the Prides around the country. “Do you know that most LGBT Prides in this country don’t hold rallies?” San Diego is one of the few prides in the nation that holds a rally and it is the least attended of all of the San Diego Pride events. Nicole Murray-Ramirez believes that the MTV generation is the generation that doesn’t have any issues with the GLBT community. “Thanks to MTV the kids grew up with a gay or lesbian character in their shows”. It started with MTV Real World and still continues on today. “Kids now a days don’t have an issue with gay proms, gay marriages or a gay social group in High School, all of this is thanks to MTV.” Nicole Murray-Ramirez believes that the next big issues to involve the LGBT community is gay marriage and gay parenting. There should be no reason why two people who love each other not get married. It is a commitment no matter who it is. Gay parents are the best parents out there. “You can always tell which child has gay parents”. They are clean, have the best toys and nicest clothes. “To become a parent is such a hassle that when a gay couple get a child they are a ‘gift’ to that couple”. Nicole Murray-Ramirez is also known as Empress Nicole the Great of the International Court System, the second largest LGBT organization in the world. news / politics / business / opinion

Ex-NJ Gov. McGreevey, now openly gay, finds niche mentoring inmates KEARNY, NJ (AP) - For anyone curious about what Jim McGreevey is up to seven years after coming out of the closet to become the first openly gay governor and resigning over an affair with a male staffer, his simple answer is this: “Having lunch at Hudson County Correctional Center.” But the story of McGreevey’s nationally televised fall from grace on Aug. 12, 2004, and subsequent search for a more authentic life is much more nuanced than that. His journey finds him, on weekdays anyway, inside one of New Jersey’s largest jails. McGreevey, 54, is the spiritual counselor to 40 female inmates who have been locked up for crimes ranging from manslaughter and gun possession to drug dealing. Almost all have addiction problems and pasts stained with sexual violence. The women McGreevey counsels – he affectionately refers to them as “my ladies” – are enrolled in a pilot program aimed at reducing recidivism by addressing the problems that keep them coming back to jail: drug dependence, difficulty finding jobs, lack of decent housing, absence of psychological counseling. “Prison ministry is something that spoke very deeply to me – allowing women and men to reclaim their lives, to go beyond our personal circumstances,” says McGreevey, who was introduced to jailhouse mentoring after enrolling in an Episcopal seminary in 2007. Following the 12step treatment model made famous by Alcoholic Anonymous, he encourages the women to find and embrace a higher power. The once high-strung former governor bounces through the jail with ease, a knapsack flung over his right shoulder. On the sixth floor, he greets every woman in the program by name. He reads from an Anglican prayer book during group counseling sessions but just as often is called upon to address an inmate’s more earthly and immediate needs: Could he place a call to an inmate’s lawyer? Help arrange for her kids to visit? Give her money for cigarettes? ( Jail rules prohibit him from honoring that last request.) Warden Oscar Aviles says the program is the only one of its kind in a county jail in New Jersey, where scarce rehabilitation dollars are seldom directed because inmates typically move through quickly, either because they’re awaiting trial or transfer to prison. David Kerr, founder and president of Integrity House, the nationally recognized substance abuse treatment provider that helps run the jail program, credits McGreevey with a lot of the program’s early success. “We’ve always been working with inmates in prisons, but not so much in jails. This is pretty
news / politics / business / opinion
unique, and Jim pretty much is the creator of the idea,” Kerr says. “Jim started the spiritual groups with the ladies,” he added. “They were so thrilled and so positive we started to look at how to help these women who are so motivated once they leave here.” In the seven months since the program started, McGreevey and his Integrity House colleagues – trauma counselor Martine Kieffer and substance abuse counselor and Yury Tarnavskyj – have come to know the women’s tragic life stories. McGreevey says he’s enraged by the violence they’ve suffered, empathetic to their victims, and humbled by their resilience. “Every day is an incredible blessing,” McGreevey says. “I learn so much more from these women than I can give them – their honesty, courage and strength. It’s a very different place than politics.” He still hopes to become an ordained priest one day, but that ambition has been delayed by the church because of his public resignation and bitter divorce. It’s been suggested that the public humiliation of his abrupt resignation helped him earn “street cred” among the inmates, but Sen. Ray Lesniak, his best friend in the Legislature, says it’s more about the cachet he carries as former leader of the state. “It’s more, `This guy was governor and he’s here to help me,’” Lesniak says. “He has really devoted his heart and soul to prison reform.” The women seem to respond to McGreevey’s brand of sincerity and charm. One who McGreevey says shows particular promise, a 22-year-old gang member named Ashley, joked around with the former governor during a recent visit, saying, “He’s always pushing me.” She fanned the pages of a notebook filled with journal entries and said: “See, Jim, I’m not just sitting here doing nothing.” Ashley didn’t want her last name to be used because of her circumstances as an inmate awaiting transfer to prison. McGreevey has to be reminded that the seventh anniversary of his resignation is approaching – but once he’s reminded notes that a lot of what he says to the women also applies to himself. “The thing I always say to them is `suffering is endemic to life. It’s how we respond – do we respond in a healthy way or do we become selfdestructive?” For McGreevey, it’s as if life really began after he came out.
He and his wife, Dina Matos McGreevey, had a long, exceedingly bitter and very public divorce and custody battle; both tried to sway public opinion by writing personal memoirs and appearing on television shows. McGreevey now lives with his partner, Mark O’Donnell, a financial adviser, and their four dogs. He shares custody of daughter Jacqueline, 9, and sees daughter Morag, 18, who lives in Canada, as often as possible. “I call it a fall into grace,” McGreevey says of his journey. “There’s no place I’d rather be in my life.”

Man interned for homosexuality by Nazis dies at 98 BERLIN – Rudolf Brazda, believed to be the last surviving person who was sent to a Nazi concentration camp because of his homosexuality, has died, a German gay rights group said Aug. 5. He was 98. The Berlin branch of the Lesbian and Gay Association, or LSVD, said that Brazda died on Aug. 4. It didn’t give details of the location or cause of death. Brazda was sent to the Nazis’ Buchenwald concentration camp in August 1942 and held there until its liberation by U.S. forces in 1945. Nazi Germany declared homosexuality an aberration that threatened the German race, and convicted some 50,000 homosexuals as criminals. An estimated 10,000 to 15,000 gay men were deported to concentration camps, where few survived. When a memorial to the Nazis’ gay victims was unveiled in Berlin in 2008, the LSVD said the last ex-prisoner that it knew of had died three years earlier. But the group said it was then contacted by Brazda, who visited the memorial at its invitation and became an honorary member. Brazda was born in 1913. He grew up in the eastern German town of Meuselwitz and repeatedly ran into trouble with Nazi authorities over his homosexuality before being sent to Buchenwald. Brazda lived in the Alsace region of eastern France after World War II. Earlier this year, he was named a knight in the country’s Legion of Honor. Berlin’s openly gay mayor, Klaus Wowereit, who met Brazda in 2008, said he learned with regret of his death. “He is an example of how important the work of remembrance is for our future,” Wowereit said. “Fewer and fewer people can give information about repression under the Nazi dictatorship authentically and from their own experience.”
Czech president defends deputy over gay remarks PRAGUE – Czech President Vaclav Klaus has defended his deputy chancellor who criticized the mayor of Prague for supporting a gay pride parade in the capital. Petr Hajek said in an interview the event is “a

political demonstration … of a world in which sexual or any other deviation becomes virtue.” He also called on Prague Mayor Bohuslav Svoboda to leave the ruling conservative Civic Democratic Party. His words have been condemned by many politicians, and the major opposition Social Democrats as well as the junior ruling coalition party, the Public Affairs party, said Hajek should apologize. But Klaus refused to distance himself from Hajek’s words and said he was not “proud” of the event.
Lesbian Australian gov’t minister’s partner is pregnant CANBERRA, Australia - A senior government minister in Australia has announced that her lesbian partner is pregnant. Finance Minister Penny Wong said in a statement that her partner, Sophie Allouache, had conceived through in-vitro fertilization and is expecting her first child in December. The announcement comes as pressure mounts on Prime Minister Julia Gillard to support overturning her center-left Labor Party’s ban on gay marriage. The policy change will be voted on its annual national conference in December. Tasmania state’s Labor branch this weekend became the seventh of Australia’s eight state and territory branches to pass a motion supporting gay marriage.
Brazil city may get ‘straight pride’ celebration SAO PAULO - An annual straight pride celebration may be a reality in Sao Paulo, Brazil after the city council approved the proposal August 2. Evangelical leaders in the area suggested “Heterosexual Pride,” or “Orgulho Hetero” in Portuguese, to counter the world’s biggest gay pride celebration in Sao Paulo. The idea first got attention during gay pride month in June. Carlos Apolinario, the city council representative who backed the idea, has previously tried to move the gay parade off of the well-known Paulista Ave. Straight pride backers moved forward with the city clerk passing the idea, but they must get the
signature of the city mayor, Gilberto Kassab, before it would go into effect. If signed, the celebration would take place the third Sunday of every December. The discussion has raised arguments online, with protesters and supporters tweeting their views.
Ireland’s gay candidate for president quits race DUBLIN – Ireland’s most prominent gay politician, Sen. David Norris, has ended his campaign for president after declaring he was wrong to seek clemency for an ex-partner jailed in Israel for child rape. Norris was considered the front-runner for the November election of Ireland’s next ceremonial head of state. But Norris faced rising pressure to quit ever since Irish newspapers last week were tipped off about his 1997 letter to an Israeli court seeking a shorter sentence for Ezra Nawi. His one-time partner had been convicted of raping a 15-year-old Palestinian boy. Key campaign aides resigned at the weekend. Norris faced an uphill struggle to be listed as an official candidate on ballots. Norris told a Dublin news conference he was quitting the race. “I deeply regret the most recent of all the controversies concerning my former partner of 25 years ago, Ezra Yitzhak Nawi,” said at the news conference. “The fallout from his disgraceful behaviour has now spread to me and is in danger of contaminating others close to me both in political and personal life … It is essential that I act decisively now to halt this negative process. I do not regret supporting and seeking clemency for a friend, but I do regret giving the impression that I did not have sufficient compassion for the victim of Ezra’s crime.”

You’ve heard about Grand Canyon raft trips. You may have read about them or, while researching adventure trips you saw some really rockin’ video. A trip like this might have even made it onto your personal “Bucket List.” So what do you really need to know about the experience to move it to the top of your list and actually make it happen? Taking an all-inclusive raft trip on the Colorado River as it flows through the Grand Canyon allows you to experience breathtaking scenery from the very bottom of the Grand Canyon. This stretch of water provides you the longest, navigable whitewater in North America featuring exhilarating rapids and calmer stretches for lazy drifting. Off- river hiking allows you to explore awesome sites in the depths of the Grand Canyon that most Canyon visitors will never see. Camping along the river gives you a front row seat to expansive starry night skies. Colorado River Outfitter, Grand Canyon Whitewater (GCW) offers this detailed glimpse into what a day on the river brings to trip participants, starting with fresh-brewed coffee and a hearty breakfast. Next it’s time to load up the rafts and get onto the water where gentle, peaceful stretches flow and yet tumultuous whitewater rapids are always a possibility and a promise. You may stop for a side hike to a rushing waterfall, native ruins or ancient petroglyphs. Along the way, the geology portrays the past as you descend into older, more ancient rock layers. You can take the time to splash in a warm creek or tread where Native Americans lived and farmed. Each day on the river carries you deeper into the Grand Canyon and each day the Canyon reveals more beauty and wonder for you to enjoy. After a full day of fun and exploring on and off the river, you pull into camp for the night. It may be a huge, sandy beach or a more intimate stretch along the water’s edge. GCW crews cook up fabulous meals with fresh foods. Guests enjoy relaxing in camp with hors’ d’oeuvres and there’s even ice for your cocktail if needed. At camp, guests can re-live the day’s adventures and plan for tomorrow’s activities then bed down beneath the starry sky where it’s easy to count the shooting stars or find the Big Dipper.
The night sky sprawls above you as the river flows beside you. Great river guides are experienced and trained to keep you safe while you maneuver your way on and off the river. They provide endless information and insight into your trip environment. According to Grand Canyon Whitewater, not only can crews navigate the swirling rapids, but they also cook great meals, bandage your blisters, entertain you with river stories and interesting Canyon facts and schedule everything. This lets you relax and enjoy your trip. Another great thing to know about rafting the Colorado River is that you don’t need to be experienced or bring much gear along. Camping gear is provided, so you’ll enjoy sitting on a chair in camp and sleeping above the sand, on a cot. Tents, sleeping bags and sheets, pillows, ground cover, dry bags and life jackets are also provided. BACK TO SCHOOL arizona s universities
create safe environments
for lgbt students By Luis Garcia & Danny Catt
With all the recent anti-equal rights legislation in the state of Arizona one would think that the state’s three main universities don’t care much for LGBT students. But that is not the case for students at the campuses of Arizona State University, University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University. If fact all three schools offer a wide variety of clubs and groups for LGBT students, some who are even leading the nation in creating a safe atmosphere for not just the students but for the faculty and staff.
The Institute for LGBT Studies at the U of A is one of only a handful of academic institutes in the U.S. It is the only Institute in the Southwestern United States and is the only one in the U. S. doing research on LGBT border issues. The purpose of the institute is to encourage the addition of LGBT Studies courses in departments across the campus. They also assist in developing sections of courses dealing with LGBT issues such as: LGBT research, LGBT Studies courses, Public lectures and Conferences, Oral Histories of Southern AZ., fellowships and scholarships, Visiting scholars and artists, continuing education, Brown Bag Lecture Series, Lesbian Looks Film Festival and curriculum development. It is staffed by a full-time director, administrative assistant and a development officer. The development director, Tom Buchanan is a wellknown activist and fundraiser. In addition, the Office of LGBTQ Affairs put on over 70 events during the 2010-2011 year with over 8400 people in attendance. “We offer an LGBTQ Support Group and in the last year a total of 63 students participated in this group, with an average of 16 students each week” said Jennifer Hoefle, Program Director for LGBTQ Affairs. “Our Safe Zone is a campuswide training program geared at helping people become better LGBTQ allies.” According to Hoefle in the past year Safe Zone had 792 and the first time ever the U of A will have a Pride Community in their Residence Halls. ASU LGBT students have a new reason to gesture the “pitchfork” in the air with pride this year. Students at Arizona’s largest university have created a LGBT Devils’ Pride
Chapter. The group was formally chartered by the ASU Alumni Association on making it the first officially recognized LGBT college or university alumni chaper in Arizona. REAL ESTATE If you were to ask me about Real Estate... A random diatribe about Real Estate, the market, selling your home, buying a home and short sales. By Dorian Kreiling
Becoming a Realtor is far harder and more expensive than it looks. Prior to Real Estate, I was in sales, training and sales management for years. This is one career that having a mentor should be mandated as to this day, 7 years after I got my license, I still upon occasion, have to put a Realtor on hold and say to Melinda, “what do I say here? The agent is wigging out?”…
And the hidden fees? Geez! The licensing fee. The brokerage fee. The cost of your business cards. Cost of your signs. The MLS subscriber fee. Advertising… E&O! When you decide to sell your home, you are emotionally giving it up to the future Buyer that you yet to meet. Most renovations don’t pay off. Don’t change the carpets or begin a big paint job – chances are good it is not going to be the Buyer’s color choice. Recognize the emotional toll the decision to short sale your property takes. Typical advice when you chose to short sale your home (that is, asking the bank to participate in the sale of your property whose value is below the mortgage amount) is to quit paying the mortgage. That is good advice. It appears to be the only way to successfully get the banks attention. Stay in the home for a while and save up money to move but when
you can move – do so. True, the home will be easier to show from a Realtor and Buyer’s perspective, but even more so, you need to begin the emotional healing process. The fact is, the home symbolizes a betrayal on many levels. The value did not hold, the house is causing financial grief, the economy is tanking – all are weighing on your emotional happiness. Find a home (AKA “shelter”) and hunker down for two to three years while your credits heals. Once you have moved (or sold) don’t look back. OK. OK. I don’t stalk ex-lovers, but under cover of darkness, I admit I am guilty of stalking old homesteads. It is the same with the decision to sell, the decision to short sale or even, walk from one’s home. (Bad idea. Don’t do that. Call your Realtor. They’ll tell you why…) Make the tough choice, cry about it, but really - go heal it will get better…
Renting out your home and the management of your property, while not rocket science, is harder than it looks. To do it right, you have to find the right tenant, check them out (they always show up on their best behavior and then…. It could/may not go downhill from there…). Insist upon timely payment of rent. If they are late, charge them the late fee no matter how difficult or sad a story they have. Evicting is not as easy as it once was. This is still a pretty Landlordfriendly state, but economic factors have necessitated Judges to be more lenient in the time frame of evictions than previously. HEALTH
Exciting new therapy relieves pain By Dr. Damien Brandeis
Dr. B: What is the best option for someone with chronic lower back pain? I have tried physical therapy several times -- no relief. X-rays show I have a slightly bulging disc but not enough, the doctor said, to cause that much pain. I have had this since 2001 and am so tired of pain killers. Judy The good news is: I have a solution for you. Thank you for an opportunity to discuss a new therapy I have been using in my practice. I have searched and studied alternative pain treatments for years. In the past, when all else failed, I prescribed prescription pain medications. But not any more! I have found an effective therapy to replace the medications and most of the alternative pain treatments you may have considered. Better yet, the FDA has approved this therapy for pain relief and control. The therapy utilizes “Scenar” (pro-
news / politics / business / opinion
nounced SKI-nar). I am excited because my patients are receiving lasting relief from pain. This therapy is non-toxic, has few contraindications and can improve over-all health. While the FDA has approved Scenar for pain control, it is all that and much more. In Russia, Scenar is used extensively, in doctors’ offices and hospitals. Scenar stands for Self Controlled Energetic Neuro-Adaptive-Receptor. In a nutshell, the therapy uses electro-magnetic energy to awaken and balance the nervous system throughout the entire body. In doing so, scenar regulates and relieves pain by creating a dialogue between the device and the nervous system. The therapy is quite similar to acupuncture and other medical therapies. As a result, the body regains control of the healing process and the pain resolves in the process. Scenar was developed in the 1970s in the Soviet Union for the treatment of a variety of health issues for cosmonauts. The goal of the therapy was an effective treatment which would work in the weightless of space and could be used at the direction of a physician on Earth and at times without the input of a doctor. The Soviets were seeking a means of medical treatment for the Space station. Considering that people in the USSR were treated by the state for health issues, an effective and inexpensive therapy would also be useful on the ground. Other criteria were safety and universal application without harmful side
effects or restrictions of application. The Soviets accomplished their goals and spent decades studying the applications for a number of diseases. After over 40 years of study, the Soviets developed a thrilling therapy. The rest of the Europe, Canada and Australia have been using Scenar for quite some time. It is only lately becoming known within the United States. Pain is like an indicator light on your car. It tells you there is a problem. It is your task to resolve it. You and your physician can ignore the indicator light, turn it off, or fix the issue. Many people ignore the problem by taking pain meds. This is somewhat like turning the indicator light off. Pain meds bypass the indicator light from your nervous system. However, the patient owns the choice and the result. Scenar therapy does three things. First, it locates the issue and assists in diagnosis. You can tell a physician where the pain is. The device will confirm this. Also, it will actually tell the physician where the real issue is. Second, the device creates a dialogue with the body’s nervous system. This opens communication for healing and resolution. Third, because the device interacts with the brain, it allows the nervous system to balance which leads to resolution of many issues. For instance, I have treated acute allergic headaches and acute sinus attacks with potential infections successfully with 15 minutes of
Scenar therapy. In the past, I would normally have provided intravenous therapy or possibly antibiotic therapy. Patients have not required this after Scenar therapy. The body was able to generate and promote a natural immune response and resolve the pain by the end of treatment. Of course, Scenar does not replace good nutrition and all of the other ingredients for good health, but it does enhance the body’s ability to direct metabolism in a positive healthy manner. Scenar is simply balancing. To this reader’s particular issue: Forty years of Russian research has demonstrated resolution of bulging discs and associated pain. Pain resolution occurs soon and the disc resolves relatively quickly over time. This treatment does not use surgery. Scoliosis and a bending of the spine have been resolved as well. So while the FDA approved Scenar for pain control, the therapy does much more. I have successfully used this therapy to improve mobility and reduce pain in several patients with back pain. Some of these patients have had pain for decades. Their quality of life without pain is priceless. We love your letters. Keep them coming! Thank you! ETHICS
Ethics En Masse By Dr. Dina Evan
It might seem that it’s not easy being ethical these days. Nor is it easy to find people who stand up for what they believe in. Many are only ranting against the things don’t believe in, often with lies and deceit. It’s difficult to get a straight answer, or a direct and truthful response to any question. If you find that kind of stand up person, that’s someone you can elect to an office or with whom you start a business a relationship or a family. It’s not easy finding people who are not so frozen in fear, that their own littleness, and morbidity has risen to the surface, and they are no longer being who they once knew they could be. If you find a person who is not made immobile, or who has not compromised his or her core beliefs with fear, that is a person with whom you can walk safely. Not easy finding people are willing to take full responsibility for their own reality. These are people, who understand and embrace cause and effect and are fully in the process of commanding change. If you find that empowered person, join him or her in any endeavor. Find me one person who is so divorced from her own arrogance and contempt that each contribution made, comes from a place of honest endeavor and you will have found the essence of consciousness. It’s not easy finding people who are able to speak excruciating truth with empathy, compassion and understanding. If you find a person who can do this, you have found a true heart, free of any punitive emotional or psychological ego. That is a person you can love and be loved by safely. The circumstances we are in today pull at our ethical edges and give opportunity after opportunity to leave the basic beliefs we may have about honesty, and integrity and ethical behavior. When there is no paycheck, there is no food. When there in no income there is no rent. When there are no accounts payable being paid, there is no business and often in these circumstances, the result is a loss of ethics, depression and fear that freezes us into inaction. True as it is, that ethical people are hard to
news / politics / business / opinion
find, I don’t think we are going to find them shopping the racks at Nordstrom or Neiman Marcus. Maybe we won’t meet them in the bar, in line at the grocery store or even in an OMG moment on Match.com. I think what we are talking about, is that ethical people would be easier to find if we each chose to be one them. It is in the trying times that we get a real peek at who we really are. It’s in the worst of times that we face the greatest tests of character. As Einstein says, “The great spirits choose the greatest challenges,” and these current challenges are not for the faint of heart. We are still experiencing a bumpy ride and we will each, in some set of circumstance, or another, have to decide who we are at the core of our being. The whole point of this time and era is to find our real selves again. It’s not about anyone else. We have given over the responsibility for our welfare, our security and our peace of mind to those who forgot they were elected to act on behalf of the people, by the people and for the people- not solely the party, not solely the corporation and not the solely C.E.O.’s The greatest gifts of this time are not found
outside of us, but rather they are inside at the core of our own character. There are no longer any answers outside of us. They are all on the inside where they have been waiting all along. With each challenge, stop and ask the most important question of your life, “Who am I and what am I here for,” and then act in alignment with the truth you know, to the degree that you know it. It’s in that place that we will find each other and our true self. It’s in that pause that we identify and fine-tune our values and our ethics. It’s in that pause that we have the opportunity of stepping into greatness. The only way to have a world guided by integrity and ethics is if we embody these values and live them through our actions. Hmmm, perhaps that’s the point of this whole mess after all. Dr Dina Evan is an author and licensed MFT in California and a Spiritual and Executive coach in Arizona. YOUR PETS
Pets in search
NEVER leave pets in the car By Dr. Alicia Ruiz
of a Loving Home Located in Phoenix, Arizona Rescue is the last voice for dogs and wcats who, through no fault of their own, find themselves awaiting death at our county pounds.
Gage Gage is a long, lanky guy who loves to rub up against you in search of head rubs and chin scratches. He enjoys hanging out with people and is very affectionate. When it comes to playtime, Gage can give the Energizer bunny a run for his money...especially if a wand toy or swizzle wand is involved in the action! In his haste to chase wands, Gage reminds you of a cartoon character...he seems to run in place for a few moments before he gains enough traction to take off after the wand!
Many pet parents believe that cracking a window is enough to keep their dogs cool in the car while they make a quick pit stop—but they couldn’t be more wrong. “Automobile temperatures can very quickly rise to dangerous levels; the average temperature increase in a parked car is 40 degrees, and the majority of this increase occurs in the first 15 to 30 minutes,” says Dr. Louise Murray, Vice President of ASPCA Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital. When it’s 80 degrees outside, your car will be a staggering 120 degrees after 30 minutes! Worse still, dogs can’t cool themselves down as easily as people, and once they overheat, they can suffer extensive organ damage or die. If you find an animal in a vehicle in Arizona
during the summer call 911. Fourteen states (including Arizona) have enacted specific laws that protect dogs in hot cars, as have many municipalities—but even in places lacking such a law, leaving an animal in a hot car may constitute cruelty. Make sure the pet gets out of the car as soon as possible. Depending on how long it has been in the car it may need to bbe rushed to a vetranerian or animal hospital. If it is not hot, but warm outside try looking around for the owners. If you are at a mall go to mall security and see if they will use the loudspeaker to ask for the pet’s owners. (You can ask most stores to do this.) Pets are counting on people like you to save their lives!

Dirk Dirk is a big, lovable, goofy dog who doesn’t yet know how big or strong he is. He rides well in the car, gets along with other dogs and loves people. Dirk has some wonderful traits: a bright expressive smile, he plays well with others, and he is a happy/mellow fellow. Dirk loves to play with his toys. He would be happiest in a home with a large yard with people who will be patient but firm in teaching him their expectations and giving him direction.

TRAVEL
Bora Bora Part Two Polynesian Playground By John Thomas Lotardo In Part One of this series, I spoke about deciding on the island of Bora Bora, getting there and choosing where to stay. In Part Two, we talk about what there is to do, eat and see (including all the people, gay and straight along the way). With the easygoing gay-friendly atmosphere it was easy to decide on Bora Bora. But what to do to occupy our time on such an isolated island was worrisome. That is, until we arrived and considered all what the Four Seasons Resort and the rest of Bora Bora had to offer. Don J Schreifels, Director of Marketing, sat down with us and calmed my fears and assured us of all the truly fabulous experiences the Resort and the Island have in store for visitors. Between Don and Brad Packer, Director of Public Relations, they really set the scene for an awesome experience. Though most consider this island merely a honeymoon event, Don explained how it really has something for everyone, including gay and lesbian travelers. This was confirmed when we quickly were befriended by Uber-gay couple Kyle and Lukas visiting from the States whom reiterated this feeling of warmth and charm. (To see and hear more on gay friendly Bora Bora, check out the website soon for the downloaded interview). We also had the chance on more than one occasion to speak with the general manager of Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora, Rajiv Malhotra. Malhotra, a 22-year industry veteran, has worked in management positions around the world, was so excited to be leading the Resort – and who wouldn’t want to be him! His excitement is contagious and it is clear in his staffing choices he wants to keep it that way. He explains that every employee is carefully screened to ensure each is well-suited for the position he or she is employed and that includes, time of day, and any specific nuance to the position. (For more about our conversation check our website soon for the complete interview).
Once settled down the first day, I did start to see beyond the gorgeous photo-opportunities. With its come-hither ocean song, many of the activities revolved around the lagoon and outer ocean. Our play stayed mainly in the lagoon as it had plenty to keep us occupied for the relative short time we had. With each morning taken up with breakfast at Tere Nui, an open-air restaurant with a 180-degree vista featuring the lagoon, the beach and Mount Otemanu, where we spent 2 hours doling over fresh fruits, breads, etc. with a few espressos to wash it all down- we focused on late morning and early afternoon activities. This included taking wave-runners with our newfound friends Rami and Daliah circumventing the lagoon or Christophe’s boating/ snorkeling tour to see the underwater life in the far reaches of the lagoon, our times was filled with water activities. While we didn’t see any sharks – though shark feeding tours are available but were too reminiscent of work for my tastewe did stumble upon the largest Manta Ray I have ever seen. Clearly as large as my Pop’s 1950’s-something Chevy, the graceful giant vanished in the deep waters as quickly as it came upon us. When we had enough of water sports, we went jeep-trekking on the Bora Bora mainland. Actually we just sat in back and held on while our driver navigated that island road as well as up and down excursions to see such things as those

famous cannons placed on the Island during the War but oddly were never fired. When the midday heat was getting to us, the driver drove up to chat with a woman in front of a roadway home and returned with fresh bananas and coconuts. While we devoured the small but sweet bananas, he cut open a coconut for each of us to enjoy the fresh liquid hidden inside. What a treat (and what a surprise!). When we wanted a little less activity and more lounging we took advantage of the poolside cabanas. And these are not just your typical cabanas. I don’t typically consider size mind you, but these were huge. I think my first townhome I lived in was smaller. With attendants providing a continuous flow of ice water, chilled towels and an Evian spritz you lose track of time. Tip: Place the coconut shell on the ledge of your cabana to notify you do not want to be disturbed. But disturbed I insisted as I order a piña colada. Speaking of drinks, this fancy concoction is expensive ($25) and beware when ordering other similar frou-frou drinks. Keep in mind this is French Polynesia and they regulate the cost of the wine to ensure the cost is kept within reason. This does not hold true for the mixed drinks so be prepared for that sticker shock or stick with the “essentials” of beer or wine. In any case, having one of those umbrella drinks while here on the island is most definitely an extravagance and having it poolside conspired to transport me and my husband into one of those fabu-
lous French films that I have never seen but have always heard about. We also took advantage of the Spa. Though their services such as massages, facials, etc were additional, those services were each unique and were worthwhile splurge as part of your fantasy stay in paradise. But basic use of the facilities was included as part of your stay to be used whenever you wanted and we did so several times during our time at the Resort- mainly during the heat of the afternoon with its scented cooling facecloths and ultra-fabulous water features. Arnaud Dieutegard, Assistant Spa Manager, encouraged us to use its services whenever we desired. He assured us that part of the many amenities experiences created in the Resort, the Spa was one of them. Tip for the boys: the outdoor spa area looks out through the trees to the outer ocean surf. You’ll have the vast Pacific virtually to yourself. We took advantage of this several times during our stay to leisurely spend a few of the hottest part of the afternoon lounging on the outdoor decking in kimonoinspired robes. Our other activities included kayaking and paddle boating which were fun and easy. Towards the end of our stay, I was getting more adventurous so I tried wind surfingyikes, that’s hard! Not as exotic as sky diving but indeed much more effort than just lounging around awaiting my next piña colada. Wind Surfing, the means by which you stand on a surfboard-like apparatus and hold securely a bar which holds a sail. You’ve seen them around and always thought they look so cool. In many trips to the Hawaiian Islands I found many dude and dude-ettes easily swirling and twirling around in the ocean surf like one of those sports deodorant commercials. Well, let me tell you, not so easy. All those years of Pilates had paid off to keep me afloat- mostly- but definitely not owning the surf- let alone getting around to standing-up for any measurable period. Thank news / politics / business / opinion
the island gods for the ever-kind and youthful staff, including those who came to my “rescue” via waverunner to return me and my slightly bruised ego back to shore. Nonetheless, wind-surfing is fun to try among the many other activities the Resort had to offer. Could there be anything wrong in paradise you may ask? Well it’s hard to find fault. One is the Luau. It was my least favorite mostly in part due to the busy make up of the table settings. Tip: Watch out for group bookings which could easily take over such a pristine location. If it is your first time to a Luau, enjoy it. If you’ve been to others, try one of the other fabulous offerings the Resort can offer such as one of their signature restaurants or the famed Bloody Mary’s on the main island. While considered touristy by many, Bloody Mary’s as one of the highpoints of our trip where we met, laughed, hugged and kissed with the staff (just the mom and wife alas, as the handsome husband was dutifully cooking behind the grill). Getting to know each of them and enjoy their stories was wonderfully fresh and unexpected. Taking a stroll along the oceanside of the Motu is another fun adventure. Being virtually desertedwe only saw one other person in the few times we ventured over to the untapped resort resource. Lounging on the deck of our overwater bungalow is where you can take a quick dip into the Lagoon by merely taking the few steps down into the turquoise water. Tip: There is a bit of a current inside the Lagoon believe it or not, so don’t let the weightless sensation get you too relaxed or you’ll get a nice little workout making your way back. I know it may not seem like an activity but room service should be especially when one begins to appreciate the nuances of playing one of the faux upper-crust elite. That includes understanding it is not done for time considerations. Some could consider it slow, taking 30-45 minutes at peak munch-times, but it truly is part of the tempo of the Island. Once you embrace this, it all makes sense. Tip: I recommend ordering the taro chips warmed. I loved them! Another highlight at the Re-
sort was enjoying its inner lagoon’s ecosystem, with the Resort’s own marine biologist Oliver Martin on hand to explain all about the diversity of fish, mollusk, bivalve and coral life. The Ruahatu (God of the Ocean) Lagoon Sanctuary at Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora is more than just a spectacular snorkeling location, but also a research facility and a place where the marine environment not only thrives but grows, furthering the delicate and wondrous ecosystem. The beauty of Bora Bora, the hospitality of the Four Seasons, the warmth of its people all united to make our experience in Bora Bora one to remember forever. Grand and breathtakingly stunning while fresh and amazingly unspoiled, Bora Bora is more than sun, sand and surf. What more can be said of paradise? I have one question. When can I return? For you avid linguists out there, below are some common sayings. Enjoy! Yes E (ay) No Aita (eye-tah) Hello Ia Ora na (yo-rah-nah) Goodbye Nana (nah-nah) How are you? Maita’i oe? Colors Melody Louise is now singing on Thursday nights from 6-9 p.m. at Colors. Melody was the youngest headliner on the Las Vegas Strip and has performed in the Legends show. She plays soft rock, country, and contemporary tunes. Melody came to Tucson seeking health and a happier life. “We love playing Colors. It was meant to be. I was looking for a venue and drove by and saw the brightly colored sign. When my friend and I were in a neighboring store, I took a chance and poked my head in the door. John, the co-owner met me at the door and was so friendly. The rest is history.” Melody is accompanied by Theodore Kolb, an accomplished keyboardist in his own right Colors is located at 5305 East Speedway Blvd.

What is Drag Terrorism? That is a very good question. Pat Moran actually coined the phrase “Drag Terrorist” when talking about the late great Divine’s approach to DRAG in a documentary called Divine Trash. I loved the way Divine’s appearance would invoke fear and confusion in both gay and straight folks alike. But the seeds of Drag Terrorism were planted in me much earlier. I got to see Flip Wilson at a Fireman’s Convention in Baltimore, MD when I was a small child. He was wearing a nurse’s uniform, playing his beloved character Geraldine and tried to take my temperature. This was in the early 70’s and they didn’t wave a wand over your head to take your temperature back then. They stuck a thermometer up your... needless to say, I had a mini-meltdown! The crowd went wild! Dressing in DRAG and being completely inappropriate got quite a reaction. I realized, at that moment, that this is what I wanted to do when I grew up, much to my parent’s dismay. This started me down the path of raiding my mother’s closet on a regular basis and putting on fierce shows in the mirror with my trusty hairbrush microphone. I think this part of the story is quite universal for many a drag queen. I eventually moved out of the safety of my mother’s bedroom and began putting on shows in the backyard. My older sister was a dancer, so there were always fabulous, sequin-encrusted costumes stored away in the attic, for just such an occasion. And the rest is history…the years passed…my parent’s feeble attempts to get me to butch it up failed miserably and before you know it I was in high school where I was introduced to Drama Club. It was during a production of Grease, in which I played Roger, the mooning champ of Rydell High and our director decided to bring the cast to see The Rocky Horror Picture Show. FOCUS TUCSON
Stryker to head LGBT Institute at UA Susan Stryker, a leading scholar of transgender theory and history, has been named director of the University of Arizona’s Institute of LGBT Studies. Stryker replaces the current director, Dr. Eithne Luibheid, who returns to teaching in the UA’s Department of Gender and Women’s Studies. Luibheid is nationally known for her research about LGBTQ immigration. Stryker is an author, filmmaker, archivist and activist whose documentary, Screaming Queens: The Riot at Compton’s Cafeteria (2005), tells the story of the first known instance of collective militant queer resistance to police harassment in U.S. history. Led by transsexuals and drag queens, the San Francisco uprising in 1966 preceded the better-known New York Stonewall riot by three years. The film was co-produced and co-directed with Victor Silverman for the Public Broadcasting System. In her new position, Stryker intends to build on the institute’s existing strengths, one of which is its emphasis on border cultures. “I want to keep that focus and to think of all the ways border studies metaphorically reflect queer identities and crossings, and also how border issues impact the LGBT community in reality,” she says. Stryker grew up in Lawton, OK., and often visited relatives in Arizona. “I feel at home in the desert Southwest,” she says. She welcomes
the possibilities of working with Wingspan, especially its Southern Arizona Gender Alliance (SAGA). She brings to Tucson a reputation for collegiality and inclusiveness. “As a transsexual and a lesbian, I have a personal stake in keeping our LGBT community together,” Stryker says. “I want to work to create a society that respects and supports diversity. I don’t put energy into divisiveness.” Her goals at the UA institute also include increasing funding for programming such as conferences that produce publications and festivals that build excitement and interest about LGBT history and issues.
“My background is in history, so I like the idea of developing an archive,” she says. “Also, I have a specialization in transgender studies, which is a rapidly evolving field, and I want to help put the University of Arizona right at the forefront. That may take the form of publishing a journal for academically oriented transgender work.” Most recently, Stryker was an associate professor of gender studies at Indiana UniversityBloomington. She has held visiting faculty positions at Harvard University, the University of California-Santa Cruz, Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, and Macquarie University in Sydney. She was the executive director of the GLBT Historical Society in San Francisco from 1999 to2003. With Stephen Whittle, she edited the Lambda Literary Award-winning anthology The Transgender Studies Reader (2006). Her most recent book is Transgender History. Current projects include a book, Sex Change City: Theorizing Urban Trans/Formation in San Francisco, and an experimental film about the 1950s transsexual celebrity Christine Jorgensen, Christine in the Cutting Room. She wrote the introduction to the 2000 edition of Christine Jorgensen: A Personal Autobiography. For additional information on the Institute of LGBT Studies, see lgbcom.web.arizona.edu/

CLASSIFIEDS Pandora... < continued from page 46 that night my life changed forever! “Don’t Dream it, Be it” became my mantra! I couldn’t wait to throw on a corset and some fishnets, and strut my stuff. And I did just that! I always felt stronger and more confident when I let my freak flag fly and the reaction I got from those around me was priceless, which just fueled my fire. The next step was to take this tranny tirade on the road and test it out. So, I threw on the trashiest outfit I could find and hopped on the Greyhound Bus headed to NYC to go to Wigstock. My mother responded in shock and horror as I headed towards the back door in full trailer trash drag, “where do you think you are going dressed like that?” I shouted back, “to New York City and You Can’t Stop Me!” When I arrived in the city, I was on cloud nine! It seemed like the whole city had shut down and thrown on a dress for the occasion. There was Drag Queens EVERYWHERE! That day I became familiar with Drag Royalty such as Joey Arias, Lypsinka, Lady Bunny, Leigh Bowery and Miss Starbooty herself… RuPaul. These queens were all so talented! They sang, they danced and they created art of the highest caliber, in my book. Living Art! And the message they had for their ador-
news / politics / business / opinion
ing crowd…Love Yourself and Love One Another. I had finally found my community. I was hooked! I look back at those days and smile because I can see that the seeds those queens planted have grown and flourished. Drag has become such a rich part of our history. We are no longer just the Divine Clowns of our Community, giving people a reason to smile during tough times. We are movers and shakers! We are pillars of strength in our community! We have Award Winning Television Shows! We have indeed come a long way. So, when I take to the streets with my Merry Band of Gender Outlaws, know that we are there to Teach Tolerance through ART! Although it may seem frivolous on the outside, the message we carry with us is indeed a serious one. It is a message that says we are here, we are queer and we will not live in fear! We have come a long way…but we still have a long way to go. And I, for one, am gonna keep on pushing the proverbial envelope until we are safe to walk down the street, in full drag, with our head held high and without fear in our hearts. Well, that’s all I have time for this month. Come and check out the new show from Pandora Productions featuring the AZ Gender Outlaws called Pandemonium on Fridays at 10 p.m. only at The Rock! Viva Drag Terrorism! Pandora xoxo
