LISTEN When I was working as a designer (many years ago) it was easy to get tied in the feeling that design was all about accommodating the next big technology or the navigating the costs and complexities of production or developing the refined styling of the physical object. But over time I came to understand that if you’re not thinking about the people you are actually designing for then you are on a hiding to nothing; your products won’t make sense, they will be hard to use and ultimately people will stop buying them. My first boss frequently told me ‘you can’t design in a vacuum’ you have to be speaking to the people who will use your products – and then this thing called ‘the internet’ happened and the whole notion of speaking to your audience got a whole lot easier, and simultaneously a whole lot more complicated. Roll forward a few years and it may have come to your attention in recent times that the world seems to have become a slightly more chaotic and unpredictable place. With the political, economic and environmental upheavals of our times have come the understandable fears that our society is becoming less friendly, less tolerant, more polarised and more confrontational; feelings amplified through the news platforms and social media until the noise of it all seems almost intolerable. The net effect of more communication seems to have given everyone a voice and sometimes that voice says things that can be very hard to listen to, leading many to ponder if it would be easier to just turn away from all the noise, close down the social media and bury our heads in the sand until it all blows over. But we should never stop listening. As designers, our role is to keep an open mind, listen to the needs of all, analyse the information available and to constantly ask ourselves the question – WHY? Only then can we really innovate, challenge the perceived wisdoms and practices and work to develop those insights into real and effective change. This year’s crop of Graduates from our MA/MSc Design: Products programme are excellent listeners, they come from all four corners of the globe and represent not just different cultures but different experiences and backgrounds as well as differing approaches to the creative process but all know the benefits that come from working together and the power of listening. I wish you all the best for your futures.

First of all, I would like to thank all our students for their dedicated hard work, perseverance and enthusiasm. This year, together with our students and our teaching team, we created our studio and NTU Product Design Masters community. Within this community, everyone has been welcoming, supportive, friendly and passionate; together not only great projects were created but also many beautiful friendships and memories were formed. During this academic year while working together we had many opportunities to give and receive feedback from each other. As I always believe teaching is not a one way transaction but instead a multiway exchange opportunity to grow together and challenge each other. Hence this year has been a great challenge for all of us and we have learned from our students as much as our students have learned from us. In addition to our committed and constant hard work, we all had the chance to get to know each other, visit different places, learn about different cultures and celebrate the diversity and enrichment of our community at NTU Product Design Masters. During their exciting journey, all students have been incredibly creative, innovative and professional. Their attitude towards their work and each other has been fascinating and inspiring. At the end of year, I’m looking forward to see all projects presented at the NTU Product Design Masters Degree show and while showcasing these projects, celebrate the completion of this wonderful experience. It has been a great pleasure for us to guide them through their journey this year and as much as it is sad to see them graduate, I’m very excited and happy for them to start the next chapter in their professional lives. As strong, hard-working, creative individuals, no doubt they will overcome any challenge that will come their way. Finally to all our students, I wish you all the best in your bright future and please remember anytime you need, both myself and your NTU Product Design Masters community will be here for you.

MA Design: Products and Furniture course is aimed at the designer who wishes to develop innovative products, furniture, systems or services. We support students to develop individual design philosophies and creative methodologies, while engaging with the realities of designing for new and emerging markets. With a strong studio-based culture, this course considers the relationship between traditional craft skills, new technology and modern manufacture, and encourages collaborative working and hands-on experience. Students are given the tools to understand market, social needs and end users, developing into an advanced and aware designer, specialising in existing or emerging areas of product design. The course, and the associated support provided by the University, enable graduates to develop advanced design, technological and manufacturing skills, enabling them to start their own business, work within the manufacturing industry, design consultancies, research and development organisations, or to progress to further study by engaging in research.
MA DESIGN: PRODUCTS AND FURNITURE
MSc Design: Products and Technology course encourages a broad and diverse range of approaches to design practice, which include: manufacturing, computer science and technology, artificial intelligence for control, robotics, project management, inclusive design, and emerging technologies, such as advanced Internet techniques. This course, and the associated support provided by the University, enable graduates to develop advanced design, technological and manufacturing skills, enabling them to start their own business, work within the manufacturing industry, design consultancies, research and development organisations, or to progress to further study by engaging in research. With a strong studio-based culture, this course provides students with the principles and techniques necessary for developing advanced product design and technological solutions to a range of practical problems. Utilising state-of-theart laboratories and prototyping workshops, computer suites and dedicated design studios, you’ll develop enhanced skills of imagination, creativity, enterprise, leadership, team building and communication.

Solar Thermal Care provides emergency heating solutions for refugees living in temporary camps constructed in deserted climate regions. Solar Thermal Care consists of a PIR insulated water tank, a pump, connective copper tubes, one small PV panel, a blue Styrofoam insulator and multifunctional modular insulation cushions. The pump is connected to a mini solar PV panel and the pump lifts the water to the solar collector automatically. Polyisocyanurate (PIR) is an efficient insulation material used in constructions and consist of two sandwiched aluminium foils, so the material reects heat of the warm water to the water tank to prevent the heat loss. PIR insulated water tank placed in between second insulation form; Styrofoam insulation material covers the whole water tank. Furthermore, third insulation; multifunctional modular insulation cushions cover the Styrofoam insulated tank. These are called multifunctional because user can combine the cushions to form a mattress to sleep or a couch to sit.
Modular cushions tied to Styrofoam insulated tank with thermal blanket. Thermal blanket consists of mylar blanket and cotton. Hence, in the system when cushions are tied with thermal blankets, heat gets reected to the water. This system is designed for saving human lives.

Multifunctional desk for home offices
The growing trend of freelancers, selfemployed and exible job arrangements drives the demand for furniture to work from home, especially by young professionals and students living in big cities. This project explores how we can update current furniture to fit the needs of these users, taking into account the need for multifunctionality and space saving solutions within the context of the home office. Through the use of a pivot mechanism, this furniture unit is modular and can transform itself using different add-on pieces, making it multifunctional and customizable. The interchangeable rotational mechanism allows the attachment of different accessories underneath a table top, which can rotate up to 180 degrees.

The detail cut specially made for cable management allows users to organise their desk in their own way, together with the option of having a separate storage unit. The at pack design, modularisation of components and recyclable materials means that less resources are used and contributes towards a circular economy.

Perinatal mental illness affects up to 20% of women in the UK. Perinatal mental health problems are deďŹ ned as mental illnesses that occur during pregnancy or the ďŹ rst year following childbirth. Unfortunately, around 40% of women across England are left without any access to specialist perinatal mental health services at all. Nova is a mobile application designed to monitor maternal mental health throughout the perinatal period. In addition to assessing mental health through the use of medical questionnaires, the mobile application allows women to connect with other mothers in her local area, therefore providing her with a physical support system in addition to the support and guidance provided digitally by the app. With the inclusion of a diary, photo album and appointment log, Nova becomes much more than a way to assess mental health and is a reliable and useful companion throughout the perinatal period.

Magic BOO is a portable compact pushchair. The pushchair is designed for 6 months to 3 years old children and for the urban lifestyle families. This project focuses on the entire process and requirements from the user start to unfold the pushchair to fold it when they finish to us it.

Main aim of this pushchair is to achieve that folding and unfolding a frame with as much easier and quick as possible. In order to solve the folding issue that existing products have, the pushchair has a simple frame structure which not only provide a good suspension but also reduce the weight. The simple frame structure also makes the pushchair compact fold and easy to fit in to the car boot. Furthermore, the design minimize the parts to make the pushchair affordable and sustainable. The pushchair as a product which grwos with the child should also be environment-friendly to benefits the next generation.

Grow’ in Porto - A growing desk for children -

The first years of a child’s life are crucial. Kids must practise different skills and explore their imagination. “Giving kids a table of their own is great for creating focus.” (Patel, 2017). To handle every task effectively the desk needs to have “smart organization.” (Harkell, 2017) Grow’in Porto, made out of birch plywood, was designed for the home environment, to grow with a child during the primary school period and to help them improve their new abilities and learning experience. To adjust the height, the user must remove four screws, lift the tabletop and push one lateral to gain more space. Then, place the tabletop in the above gap, close in the lateral panels and add the screws. At the tabletop, kids have easily accessible storage with the shapes and colours of the houses of Ribeira (one of the most iconic places from Porto, researcher’s hometown), to promote organization and responsibility.

Behind the project there was an intimate connection between the unique city where the designer grew up and the “birth” of a “growing” desk for any growing up child. Because children deserved it and meaningful places deserved it too!

Inspired by the traditional Japanese theme of ‘simplicity’, the pieces celebrate craftmanship and elegance which contribute to the harmony of the space they go into. I wanted the furniture to avoid being too ‘noisy’; of drawing attention to the fussiness of its construction. Lightness communicates to the receptivity of the Japanese to ensure the furniture does not add an obtrusive noise to the environment in which it is placed. The Lightness of the furniture was designed to contribute to the harmony and tranquillity of the interior of the café interior rather than making its own personal statement. The furniture celebrates the natural beauty of Ash and Walnut details with gentle proportion, solid materiality and softened with gentle curves and textures. Ash enhances the lightness while adding elements of warmth and emotion. The round table and stools create an intimacy where couples can sit close and friendship groups can socialise together.
The furniture invites the customers to explore its tactile qualities and discover its details and textures which pay homage to Nottingham’s lace industry. The table rim frames the individual platters, to create a serenity of subtle forms, shapes and textures

The rules of playing games could be multiplayer mode or single player mode. During the process of playing the game, for children, firstly, the ability of recognizing and expressing emotions could be developed. Secondly, it is able to enahnce language development skill. Last but not least, the creativity could be encouraged. For parents, this game is able to create connections and unique moments between parents and children. Meanwhile, it helps parents to understand children’s feeling.

An initial idea to release physical stress and encourage to have a healthy and soothing environment leading to have a change in positive emotion as well as help destress mental stress. A beautifully made urban Slouch chair, simple yet elegant design is perfect for any classic or contemporary decor. With a sturdy metal base intersecting through the seating frame made from layer-glued bent birch ply maintaining the curvature for the perfect slouch position which can be adjusted at different angles according to the user’s comfort through the metal fittings. The padded seat upholstered with a layer of cushion foam topped with memory foam giving a sink in feeling, finished with pastel petal velvet high quality cotton-like velvet fabric. The lush seating is perfect of relaxing the body after a stressful day.

Pet animals like indoor cats are now becoming more and more involved in both daily and social life of human beings. In return, human are also getting more caring for these animals like never before. The popularity of indoor cats has developed their relationship with their owners into a complex conundrum regarding the nature of the human-animal relationship. Despite there is now increasingly demand for double-duty furniture for indoor cats and their owners, an overwhelming majority of such furniture in the market is never up to design level.

Meownimal is a kind of tea table by Muji as it is not a piece of furniture for the customers, but a place of entertainment for the cats. It offers more chances for the companionship and interaction between cats and their owners.

The Justerbar is an adjustable entryway storage furniture for the young urban generation with two modes. When the space available for use becomes larger and the storage demand increases, the Justerbar can be transformed into a second mode. In addition to the three pillar racks, the other accessories need to be purchased separately and installed by the user. These accessories are easy to assemble with no hardware and do not need any tools. When the space available for use becomes smaller, the user no longer needs the second mode. All accessories can be recycled by the manufacturer or the merchant to reduce waste.

In order to verify the feasibility of the product parametric design method, two different-the sport shoe project and the racing FPV exercise machine project-constructed according to the product parametric design method is described in detail. In sport shoe project, the produce parametric design method is more focused on the feasibility of designing complex topological products under complex conditions. In the racing FPV exercise machine project, the possibility of applying parametric design in circuit design and program development is mainly measured.

Conventional production techniques have long since been outdated and inefficient, the adoption of new technologies such as Autonomous Robotic Vehicles (ARVs) are increasingly being used in today’s factories to drive productivity and lower costs. ARV technologies are being introduced into factory environments to transport materials from point to point, enabling production to become more efficient, productive, and allowing a more effective use of labour. In order to evaluate the feasibility of ARV technologies for the transportation of materials within factories, a payload structure was designed and developed to transport materials from point to point. The payload structure consists of an innovative roller cassette design, which unloads case blanks to delivery points within a factory production line. This innovative integration of technology allows end users to improve inefficient processes, and conform to industry 4.0 standards.
This research was sponsored by a global food and drinks company, to assess the feasibility of ARV technologies for the transportation of materials within factories.

“MOMO: A conceptual approach towards making your wardrobe a personal stylist by application of smart mirror�. This project is one classic blend of a tangible and intangible feeling. Where tangible part belongs to the wardrobe and its integrated smart mirror which acts as a personal stylist for the female users whereas the intangible features are the effects that the journey of experiencing this system leaves on female users, psychologically. This system aims to achieve an enhancing Human-Machine interaction and focuses on personalization in design in context to inner layout and aesthetics of the wardrobe. The innovation of this project is in the circulation of the user while accessing their wardrobe and mirror while deciding their outfit for any occasion where the interfaces of integrated smart mirror connected via RFID system that works on raspberry Pi 3 B+, guides the user with different outfit options out of the items that are present inside their wardrobe based on criteria like occasion, weather and mood of the user to the most convenient fashion style possible.
This project is a combination of ‘furniture design’ and ‘user-experience design’, where wardrobe design belongs to the former and smart mirror interfaces to the latter. The end result of this system aiWms to achieve a joyous experience for the user which makes them confident and content about ‘The-Self’.

Living Room Workspace Furniture Design

Based on the freedom of function within the living room, the Island sofa range focuses on a casual work platform within the sofa area. These space-saving islands are made to fit in most of the spare spaces within an apartment and are big enough to fill a room space without feeling crowded or cluttered. By encouraging people to arrange the living room to what suits them best, the sofa is existing as a group of islands. By combining the islands with a table or a wall, carefully selected arrangements will decorate the living room with an impression of the host. Similar to the soil on islands, textiles have high exibility on both colours and different forms of usage. The connected cushions will enhance the seat with a texture of mild softness, whilst allowing the user to personalise the experience and enjoy the product to its fullest.

This product is a tent-like storage unit for children. It could be used in the corner of room. Users open the tent and children can sit inside and play. Also, parents can sit inside and read stories for their children. After the user finished using, the cover can be shut directly, and all children’s items will be brought into the tent. Also, the tent has a hole that can be opened and closed. It can be used as a shooting game, and encouraging children to tidy by themselves, or as an entrance to a tent. This product creates a play area for children. It helps users to place the children`s items more appropriately, while reducing cases of furniture tipping accidents from happening.

Grip is one of the most important senses in the human body. It allows us to interact with objects both delicate and fragile, as well as to manipulate complex forms without dropping them. For those either born without an upper limb, or those who have lost limbs due to trauma, difficulties in daily life are many and can cause great stress when interacting with objects in public.

A device which would allow a prosthetic user to add grip sensing functionality back to their existing limb and allow the user to once again perform daily tasks with ease which would otherwise be impossible, for example picking up an egg without cracking it. Many users choose to do without a prosthetic limb, due to functional problems.
The aim of this project is to create an affordable and intuitive product, that can be attached to an existing prosthetic device, enabling the prosthetic user to sense pressure applied to the digits of their existing prosthetic device.

ICARUS Tackle Pad The Icarus tackle pad is designed to reduce training injuries within youth rugby whilst maintaining ease of use. With its modular design the pad is easy to store and transport whilst providing the possibility of personalisation and simple repairs. The product is pulled by another player with a detachable harness, moving the pad and training the tackler to adjust their tackling position whilst focussing on their form, with the aim of preventing contact injuries within these sessions.

The tackle pad is targeted towards grass-roots level clubs and so is affordable and robust to endure the day to day usage that it would be subject to.
The pad can be used as a dummy, obstacle or target as well as a tackle pad. This further expands its usage and prolongs product life, saving the club money.

This project looked at designing a camera end effector and light source for a UR10 robot, a 6-axis articulated robot arm, to aid with operating room setup. The research looked at current camera and lighting technology available which could then be amalgamated into one combined device. Paediatric neurosurgeon, Professor Mike Vloeberghs, gave an insight into the medical equipment currently used and the problems associated with them. Key features of the design include a YouRing attachment, which when activated allow the operator to freely move the device. The LED ring can be programmed with different colours which allow operating staff to be aware of the different motion states that the arm is in. Inputs into the controller interface adjust the brightness of the LEDs over the operating area and zoom capabilites of the video camera. The footage from the camera is relayed onto a display screen for all surgical staff to see in the Operating Theatre.

In 2004, mesenchymal cells (similar to the stem cells found in bone marrow, umbilical cord blood, and peripheral blood) were found in menstrual blood (period blood). This being a waste blood routinely thrown away by up to 24,000,000 women in the UK, there is huge potential for its utilisation in cell therapy. These cells have been found to treat liver injury, Huntington’s disease, and some cancers in animal models, and four people with multiple sclerosis recieved successful transfusions of these cells. Would you donate your period blood? Or would you recieve treatment for arthritis, stroke, or tissue damage knowing its source was menstrual blood? This research looks at the attitudes to period blood, with primary research exploring menstrual experiences, societal taboo, and female empowerment.

Voe
Designed by Debora Bouvie Voe (fly in Portuguese) is a lighting project developed to represent freedom, creativity and curiosity. It is designed to resemble a bird, and by moving its “wing” up to 180 degrees, it is possible to control the direction of light. The use of wing nuts and a toggle switch provides a retro feeling, while the LED lamp used has a built-in dimmer technology. These carefully designed features allow great customization by the user, making it work as a focus light, task light and ambient light. The modular design is also optimised for easy disassembly and uses recyclable materials.
Gino and Gina Lanterns Designed by Allan Cutts
The bedroom light is designed for children aged 6 to ten years. The lamp is designed as a bed side reading light, with a secondary light source which acts as a lantern if the child needs to get out of bed in the dark. The light comes with additional stickers to allow the child to create a special character for either the Gino or Gina options. The batteries are charged from the base unit which opertaes from a USB cable.

Designed by Yan Huang KIWI is a minimalism and portable desk light designed for university students aged from 19 to 22 years old in the UK. Users could personalize the bendable frame as they want, not matter when charging or using the frame as the light stand. The lighting part would be charged when users put it on the base and turn on the switch. It relys wireless charging.
A Bookend Lamp Designed by Bhumika Kantharia
A lamp designed for bibliophiles. A basic concept of a folding lamp with an adjustable bookend. A strong structure made out of hardwood of client’s choice, with industrial hinges to hold the lamp in the desired angle. The wooden base interlocked in one another to slide as per the need to store the books. LED lights with different brightness level, when not in use can be ushed in the bookend.

Mi x Yee light Designed by Qiaowei Le
Mi x Yee Light is a bed-side lamp deliberately designed for the young generation, consisting the light and other functional components, which allows customers to place their daily items orderly and thus maintain the neatness of the table. In line with their personal needs, customers can order different components beforehand. The Yee LIGHT LED of Millets makes the products even more interactive as with connection to WIFI. Customers can turn on and turn off it as well as control the lightness, colours remotely. Customers can also use their phones to set the time of turning on and off.

The multifunctional desk and task light Designed by James O’Brien
A light aimed at young profesionals (‘Millennials’), that acconompanies the constant changing lifestyle of young profesionals who require certain attributes from products, such as adaptability and multifunctionality. By moving the light along the arc, the user is able to change where the light is focused. As well as this, the arc can be angled. The light source is interactive and can be swapped between directional task lighting and ambient area lighting.

SFÄRER Lamp | Drawing influences from the space age styling common in the 60’s, and the simplistic forms and clean lines common in the scandi design movement, a functional yet beautiful lighting solution was developed. SFÄRER is designed to be used both as a table or desk light, and using the separate ball portion, a torch-like device used for navigation. This product is available in a range of materials, including woods, plastic and concrete.
MuLi
Designed by Ben Irwin MuLi is a bright and attractive light designed for installation within the bathroom. The pendant and chandelier form evenly distributes, and refracts a wide spectrum of light around the bathroom interior. This creates a safe and pleasing environment for the user. The customisable components allow for personalisation, which enhances the customer’s experience and use of their bathroom

Fibonacci’s Light Tree Designed by Peri Sima Antalyali
The design’s objectives are to reduce stress level in corporate firms by bringing aesthetic visual figure from nature and help workers to balance their working hours. This is a multifunctional product that has an alarm and it lighted in every 52 minutes to remind the worker to take a break. Also, it could be separated and become two different light sources for enabling to user visual ergonomy.

The hinged support rail and shower seat have been designed together for Dolphin Solutions to fit in the bathrooms and washrooms of the 21st Century; sleek, modern shapes and stylish brushed stainless steel can be integrated into any bathroom in beautiful airport, office, and hotel spaces.

The support rail has an elegant profile that allows users to comfortably push down or raise the rail with minimal effort. On top of this, the support rail and the shower seat are height adjustable: with a simple swivel, the rail and seat can be adjusted for adults as well as children: presently a difficulty for those with wheelchairs of slightly different heights. With all stakeholders in mind, the products are easy to install, and the smooth, rounded form also means the products are easily cleaned.

Computing and technology are becoming an increasingly integrated part of our daily lives and have now become an integral part of the national curriculum, giving children as young as 5 years old the tools they need to learn basic programming and coding principles. ‘Me-Bot’ is an adaptable and customisable PCB controlled floor robot. It can be altered in both its appearance and programming complexity. It its programmed and controlled via a Bluetooth app, and has a variety of accessories such as, maps and appearance cards. The Me-Bot is an addition to the existing tts Bee-Bot and Blue-Bot product line, which has had a proven success in the past 5 years. The Me- Bot is customisable with the use of interchangeable attachments which slide into the top of the robot. A simple customisation, is to put the card slide in, and insert your own customised character or object. This type of attachment allows the integration of learning about subjects other than programming. As well as simple route planning, the MeBot also the ability to build, test and debug algorithms created for Bee-Bot, and also programme distances and angles like with the Pro-Bot.
The Me-Bot can use the same app and maps as existing products, but it is smaller, which means more than one can be used on a map at a time.

BLOX-BOX
There are four different concepts for the W’innovate project. The Box concept is designed for kids who can buy the product, which contains a set of blocks , with their pocket money and be creative with the different themes the bricks provide. This also creates a collective nature to the product. The material uses injection moulded ABS. The product is compact, light weight and easily stackable and can be used for storage also.

The back to basic concept contains the collectible cards and a grid print. This concept is for the kids to get more creative with the cards and draw different ideas, as well as helping them to understand the 3-dimensional aspect of their build. After building the structure the kids can share the images of their creation on social media and can challenge their friends to builds. This will create more social aspect and help the child be more creative.
BLOX-BACK TO BASIC
This concept was initially thought of as a way for Blox to expand into a new market, however, we felt that there was more to this concept thatn that. The group initiated working on different colours and shapes which can later be used as mosaic pattern for the wall or tub that the kids can play with and utilise the suction-cupped base plate with. This concept creates a new way to play in the bath and can turn something that some dislike into an anticipated adventure.
The group also worked on another concept, which became the focal point of the project and due to its success was chosen by W’innovate to be bought with the intention to be sold at Wilkinson stores throughout the UK. The design has proven to be a success and Wilco are looking at putting the product on the market in Autumn 2020.
