GETTING SICK IS ALMOST GUARANTEED The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that there should be zero E. coli in water meant for drinking. But we found up to 1 million E. coli cells in 100ml of water collected downstream for the informal settlement and sewage treatment facility sites. According to the mathematical model, someone who ingested as little as 1ml of untreated water had almost a 100% chance of getting sick during the rainy season – leading to school absences and missed days of work. People living in informal settlements and rural areas need to be made aware of the negative impact of open defecation, especially directly into rivers. Where there is no alternative water source, they should be advised to treat the water, for example by boiling it before use. Governments need to ensure that people living in rural communities and informal settlements have access to toilets and clean water. This can be done by building community toilets or providing them with mobile toilets, where construction may not be possible. Governments also need to ensure that sewage treatment facilities, where available, are functioning correctly to avoid the discharge of poorly treated water containing harmful bacteria and faeces into rivers. The Department of Water and Sanitation of South Africa must also ensure that wastewater treatment plants adhere strictly to Section 39 of the National Water Act, 1998, which provides guidance for quality and management of wastewater. : source The South African

The Problem Continues... Five villages in Tsomo, Eastern Cape, have been without water for three months now. They were to receive water from the Ncorha Bulk Water Project, which was launched in 2016. The estimated completion date for this project, however, will only be reached in 2020. The Ncorha Bulk Water project will also cost R345-million to complete. According to reports, the villages in the Chris Hani District Municipality – Gqogqorha, Emdeni, Mahlubini Komkhulu, Mnyangula and Mmangobomvu – are desperately awaiting the completion of the project. Water tankers are currently being brought in from the Intsika Yethu Local Municipality to ensure these villages have enough water to get by. Speaking to GroundUp, municipality spokesperson Thobeka Mqamelo said the area’s existing boreholes have decreased dramatically. “Within the month of October pumps will be installed and bulk pipeline from the borehole to the reservoir will also be installed ‌ This is a temporary arrangement since the area is running out of water,â€? she said. According to Gqogqorha villagers, there is indeed a water tank in the village, but it has been dry for months now. A total of 1 150 people make up the villages without water, and many of their residents are losing livestock to the drought. The livestock of 27 households have reportedly been declared dead due to starvation and dehydration. Some villagers have become so desperate for water that they walk more than three kilometres each day to fetch water from a stream.
