Free State water and sanitation issues at the fore again
Mchunu will be flanked by the Deputy President, David Mabuza. They are set to inspect the Wastewater Treatment Plant in Kroonstad on Friday afternoon. They will also meet with the provincial leadership of the Northern Cape on these same issues on Friday morning, before their trip to the Free State. Mchunu and his Deputy Minister, David Mahlobo, previously held closed meetings in Welkom with officials from various government entities, including municipalities such as Mangaung Metro, Matjhabeng, and water boards, which include Bloem Water and Sedibeng Water, to address these issues of water and sanitation. The two are also set to inspect the extent of pollution at the Vaal River where millions of rands have already been spent with the intent to solve the issues. The river runs through the Free State, North West, and Gauteng, among others. The departmental spokesperson, Sputnik Ratau, said Mabuza will assess the extent of pollution in the Vaal River System, as well as water and sanitation-related issues in the mentioned provinces. In May 2021, the national government announced that an amount of R1,1 billion will be spent over the next three years for the refurbishment of the wastewater treatment plants. Ratau said this much-anticipated visit is aimed at addressing the structural and systematic challenges in the water value chain, resulting in raw sewage flowing into streams, rivers, and dams. Various protests have been held across the province, including in Mangaung and Maluti-A-Phofung, where residents have lamented the state of water and sanitation in the province. Qwaqwa residents in June 2020 took to the streets and barricaded roads with stones and burning tyres because of a lack of service delivery, including water, in that area. OFM News in January 2020 reported that disgruntled residents in the area took to the streets, demanding water after the death of an eight-year-old girl who drowned while fetching water from a river. In the response to the violent protests, the then minister of Water and Sanitation, Lindiwe Sisulu, promised to send more water tanks to the embattled municipality. She then vowed to ensure the installation of 5 000 water tanks to alleviate the water crisis experienced in the region. Minister Sisulu also announced that the Department’s intervention would be an allocation of R220 million and 5 000 water tankers to address the situation. Source OFM News

Parys water lab to be unveiled and can mean cleaner safer water
Residents of Parys are a step closer to having cleaner water for domestic use with the town’s newly completed water testing laboratory to be unveiled on Wednesday. The construction of the laboratory appears to have been carried out by the now defunct De Beers Voorspoed Mine near Kroonstad under their social labour plan, which ends in 2021. De Beers Voorspoed will, as a result, hand the water testing laboratory over to the Ngwathe Local Municipality in a ceremony held at the Parys Water Treatment Plant beginning at 10:30 am. Officials from the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy will also be in attendance and form part of the handover. OFM News previously reported that the municipality was forced to rope in Sedibeng Water to assist with infrastructure-related issues at its Parys Water Treatment Plant. The Free State town is the lesser-known casualty of the Vaal Water Crisis, with media coverage on the matter being dominated by the main culprit in the crisis - the Emfuleni Local Municipality in Gauteng. Save the Vaal’s Maureen Stewart in 2018 explained that the drinking water at Emfuleni is safe to drink because it comes from the Vaal Dam and undergoes an extensive purification process by Rand Water, while Parys on the other end bears the brunt of the pollution with it being located downstream where pollution accumulates. Ngwathe, which faces its own set of governance issues, has long struggled to sufficiently treat the raw water it retrieves from the Vaal River for consumption due to several problems at its water treatment plant. The result of this is the widely circulated pictures of brown water coming from domestic taps in the Free State town. Sedibeng Water was acting as the “implementing agent” responsible for overseeing the project to “fix the Trident plant” which was out of operation at the time. Last week, the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Senzo Mchunu, has vowed to address pollution issues that are related to the Vaal River and has further requested stakeholders to join hands with government in finding a common solution to the problem.
Lion Farm Inspection In The F.S An inspections at a lion farm in the Free State allegedly revealed 13 lion carcasses in a locked freezer, rotting meat on the floor, and other lions living in an overcrowded enclosure. This discovery was made during an inspection conducted by the NSPCA and officials from the Department of Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs in the Free State. The NSPCA was expected to open a case of animal cruelty against owners of the farm over “appalling” conditions the lions were kept under. According to an animal rights organisation Four Paws, a number of lions were found in poor physical health with no access to drinking water. Director of Four Paws in South Africa, Fiona Miles said the lions were also housed in unhygienic enclosures containing decomposing food and bones, as well as being in an overcrowded enclosure infested with parasites. “Thirteen lion carcasses were also discovered in a locked freezer container, with rotting meat on the floor,” she said. Miles said they were “appalled” that this was still a reality in South Africa. “Lions are being exploited for tourism, trophy hunting, and trade in their body parts. We urge the South African government to act and urgently move forward with its decision to eliminate the industry,” Miles said. Daniel Born, also from Four Paws, said the inspection took place on August 3. He said no live lions were removed from the farm. However, they had taken the relevant and necessary steps in terms of the law to ensure that their concerns regarding the lions were addressed. Failing which, he said, the NSPCA would not hesitate to take further action. “We are still awaiting results on the cause of death of the lions, whose carcasses we removed. “Taking into account that the case is still under investigation, we are exercising caution as to what information is made available to the public and media, as it may impact our case. We will provide an update at a later stage when we can release that information, without jeopardising the animals, or our case,” Born said. The NSPCA is in the process of gathering further evidence to ensure that justice is found for the lions. Source: IOL news
