Description:

ROBINSON STRONG + NUBIA GARCIA A. Aqtash | ARCH 401.03

This project deals with the excess of economic and travel flows in Cartagena, Colombia within the context of Formula 1 racing and the High-Rise. The research identified two major rapid growing economies within the City: the development of high-rises to critical mass in Boca Grande (and its economic correlation to vehicular density) and the influx of tourism via cruise ships entering through one of the countries largest industrial ports. With this information we propose a bridge connecting Manga with the Over-developed BocaGrande as an artery to promote, via traffic flow, a new center of development within Cartagena. And we also propose a relocation and expansion of the cruise ports, away from the container park and closer to the city historic center. In the middle of these is the tower which serves to mediate the flows of people and development. The tower is a center point for cruise tourism and visiting tourists as they flow through and up into the tower to reach the visiting center at the top. While engaging structurally with the bridge, the tower also amplifies the bridge’s economic effect by setting the stage for a new city skyline. The tower also serves as an template for high rise balcony conditions geared for viewing the Formula 1 Race. The development of the balcony condition can be traced back to our initial water experiments where we identified a series of modules with potential architectural conditions. These modules went through a architectural refinement via collage, model making, and 3D modeling. The Port serves as a platform for the cruises to become a new grandstand typology. The race weaves in and out of the ports with hair pin turns to maximize view from these unique conditions. The cross-section of the port was developed with knot geometry to negotiate the flows of people, automobiles and views. The port acts as a gill to ease tourists into the city with embedded commercial programs and brings that economic flow into Manga, as well as the historic areas.

Project Title:

UNDULATING LIFT

Location: Columbia University on the shore of the Harlem River Type: University Boathouse Square Footage: 20,000 sq. ft. Course: Comprehensive Design_6 Critic: Erica Goetz

Description: The building acts as a light gesture in the site. The formal qualities of the building are based upon a study model where a series of modules shared a pivot line. It relates to the rational and synchronized movement that the rowers make with the oars when on the water. Each module is rotated up a couple of degrees from its neighbor. This creates a dynamic form with a linear scheme that is oriented parallel to the river so upon approach from the hill, the building reveals itself as a light gesture on the site. The building is grounded and lifts off to create an entry to the site and an outdoor room below the underbelly of the building. It is organized in such that the unconditioned boathouse storage is grounded and all conditioned space is elevated onto the second floor. The ungrounded, conditioned space allows for an outdoor room for access to the river. The program is organized in section so that the boats are on the lower level (subject to flooding) and the conditioned program is above. The sequence of the structural frames creates program bays that are organized around a central circulation spine. The building form is influenced by a rotational movement along a pivot point which has the building being grounded and then lifts off from the ground. It then gives three structural conditions; the grounded, the bridging and the cantilevering. The building permeability performance allows for natural lighting (clerestory conditions) and passive ventilation to travel through from the underbelly of the building.

FOUR ‘AXIS’ LIVING Location: Grand Av. Brooklyn, NY Type: Undergraduate Dormitory Square Footage: 30,000 sq. ft. Course: Comprehensive Design_5 Critic: Jeremy Carvahlo

Description: ‘Tri-axis’ porosity throughout the dormitory allows students to maintain a multi axis connectivity to city, neighbors and communal spaces by multiple means of access(egress) and multi-oblique views to-from-and-through the building. The parti has two connected courtyards with alternating openings to east and west. Living quarters are clustered into two linked duplexes that branch out of vertical cores in multiple axes. Each unit then promotes three axis of movement through the cluster to access distributed shared amenities (kitchen/bath/green house/living/ dining). Kitchen and bathroom spaces are distributed vertically in the duplex core to service multiple levels of the cluster. Sleeping spaces branch out longitudinally from the duplex core to get views through the buildings garden space into the city. Front and rear duplexes are linked by a lateral bridge of dining/ living space that afford a social gathering space within the cluster with views into the buildings atrium and garden spaces. Clusters consist of twelve bedrooms (in varying proximity) four bathrooms, two kitchens, two green houses, and a living/dining space as amenities to compensate for compact living quarters.

Oblique Voids_brings in natural light and ventilation

Vertical Voids_utilized for light wells and forms for vertical circulation

A multi-faceted lenticular façade enhances oblique visual connectivity into, out of, and through the unit space and building. Four-axis oblique panels’ address light by absorbing its energy with photovoltaic panels to let in North light into interior spaces and reflecting light into courtyard spaces. Panels undulate to make room for bedding, to contain storage, and to hold plants within the green house. The overall Parti affords two connected courtyards with multiple openings to east and west; bringing light and air into the interior of the building; providing garden space on alternating levels and multi-axis views into-out of- and through the building – including views from the east of the building looking to west, etc. Circulation through the building and within the unit are integrated with the garden and green house spaces; promoting a culture of food and energy sustainability.
