The BA.2. Variant: Another Surge On the Way? Milan Hall Correspondant

The Omicron variant of the Coronavirus had devastating impacts on the world, and now experts and the general public are questioning what impact its subvariant, BA.2., will have. BA.2. has recently been thrust into the spotlight of American media but the variant has already been in the attention of health professionals for a while. The World Health Organization (WHO) has already released a statement on BA.2. On Feb. 22, 2022, WHO released a statement on BA.2 in which they said: “Studies have shown that BA.2 has a growth advantage over BA.1. Studies are ongoing to understand the reasons for this growth advantage, but initial data suggest that BA.2 appears inherently more transmissible than BA.1, which currently remains the most common Omicron sublineage reported.” The main focus of the article was to give general information about the differences between BA.2 and BA.1. At the time BA.1 was the main subvariant of Omicron. WHO made it clear throughout the statement that the number of overall cases has been decreasing although that may not be the case for much longer. BA.2 has already caused a rise in case numbers in European Countries such as Great Britain and Germany. The variant has been shown to be more infectious than the BA.1 variant of omicron. Case numbers may be dropping at a national level but the remaining cases are mainly the BA.2 variant. On Mar. 20, 2022, Dr. Anthony Facui shared his thoughts on BA.2. on This Week with George Stephanopoulos. When asked for his general thoughts on the variant, Fauci responded with: “Well, as was said, it has a degree of transmission advantage over the original omicron, but not [a] multi-fold advantage. So, it's about 50 to 60 percent or so more transmissible, which means ultimately over time, it might take over as a dominant variant. Clearly, throughout the world, it's about 80 plus percent, 85 percent of the isolate. In the United States, it's still somewhere around 30 percent.” It is known that BA.2. is more contagious than the BA.1. variant of omicron; So how do they differ in severity? Fauci claims “So,

of anti-virals, of tests and of the ability to get boosted. I mean we have a number of clinical trials going that are trying to determine what the best combination of boosting is to get both effectiveness and durability. So, we just can't stand still, particularly as we appear to be in somewhat of a lull in the cases, where cases continue to come down, deaths continue to come down and hospitalizations. That's no time at all to declare victory because this virus has fooled us before and we really must be prepared for the possibility that we might get another variant and we don't want to be caught flatfooted on that.”

“ That's no time at all to

it does have an increased transmission capability. However, when you look at the cases, they do not appear to be any more severe and they do not appear to evade immune responses either from vaccines or prior infection.” This statement does support the information found from the surges in Europe. The surges in some European countries have been fairly short compared to the initial Omicron surges. In some countries despite the cases rising, hospital admissions have either remained the same or only risen slightly. Although there have been some rapid increases in cases. In Britain, hospital beds have been filling up mainly with those in the age group of 70 or older. They plan to start administering fourth doses this upcoming week. The United States is in a similar situation to these European Countries. There's more relaxed regulations and mask mandates are continuously being lifted. As for the citizens, many of them have not recently received a booster shot. Fauci commented on the similarities in situations, “So, the bottom line is we likely will see an uptick in cases as we've seen in the European countries, particularly the

U.K., where they've had the same situation as we've had now. They have BA.2. They have a relaxation of some restrictions such as indoor masking and there's a waning of immunity.” Despite this Fauci is not expecting a surge, “Hopefully, we won't see a surge. I don't think we will. The easiest way to prevent that is to continue to get people vaccinated. And for those who have been vaccinated, to continue to get them boosted. So, that’s really where we stand right now…We can expect to see an increase, yes.” In response to being asked, “What more can we be doing to protect against another surge?” Fauci replied “I mean we only still have about 65 percent of our population has been vaccinated and -- of the total population. And of those who are eligible for a booster, only about 50 percent of them have been boosted. There are a lot of things that we can do from a public health standpoint.” Fauci also shared some other statements on possible preventive measures that should happen or that are in progress, “The other thing we can do -- and I hope that we get the funding from Congress to do this, is to continue to build up our supply

declare victory because this virus has fooled us before and we really must be prepared for the possibility that we might get another variant and we don't want to be caught flatfooted on that.” -Dr. Anthony Fauci This situation is surrounded by uncertainty. There is not much information available now but in general the money in the Federal Covid fund is running out and it is unknown how much more it will get. It also seems unlikely that strict mask mandates and covid regulations will be coming back. Many experts are in agreement that case numbers will be going up. The main question seems to be how severe will this be.

NC State Athletics Seeing High Levels of Success The North Carolina State University athletic department is currently achieving high levels of success in their performances in their 2021 - 2022 season. The Women's Cross Country brought home the ultimate goal of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) national title which is the Athletic Department’s first national championship in a team sport since 1983. It was the Women’s Cross Country program's first NCAA title and third National Title as the team won backto-back Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) national championships in 1979 & 1980. Kelsey Chmiel was the University's highest placing finisher in the championship race and finished 6th of all competitors. Katelyn Tuohy, Allie Hays, Hannah Steelman, and Sam Bush assisted in bringing home the team's championship race, giving the team five of the top 32 competitors in the race. Chmiel, Tuohy, Hays, Steelman, and Bush all earned all American-Honors earning the school’s record for All-Americans in a single season. It was the First NCAA title the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) had won in Women's cross country since Virginia accomplished the feat by winning the 1981 & 1982 titles.

Tim Havens Staff Writer

NC State’s Women’s Swimming and Diving Team earned the second-highest result in program history by finishing 5th at the 2022 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. Katharine Berkoff won the national championship for the 100-yard backstroke for the second year in a row. Berkoff won the race with a time of 48.74 and became the first woman representing NC State in swimming and diving to break an NCAA record and in the process set a new record for NCAA, ACC, US Open, Pool, and program history. Berkoff, Emma Muzzy, Hylee Alons, Sophie Hansson, Annabel Crush, and Abby Arens all earned All-American honors for their individual and relay efforts in the NCAA championships. In total, the team earned seven AllAmerican honors with four of those being individual All-American honors.

The team also set a new University record for the 400-yard relay event with a time of 3:09.95 NC State's Men's Swimming and Diving Team finished 4th to tie the university’s highest result in men’s swimming and diving. The team has reached this position multiple times from 2016 to 2019. Kacper Stokowski won the national championship for the 100-yard backstroke, which is the 6th fastest in the history of the event and the second-fastest in NC state history. Will Gallant and Ross Dant placed second and third respectively in the 1650 freestyle. NC State’s men's team had seven individual All-Americans & Each of NC State’s five relay teams received AllAmerican honors. NC State Women's Basketball Raina Perez’s steal sends NC State’s Women's Basketball Team Into the elite eight. North Carolina State's Women’s Basketball team has reached high levels of success on the court. The team recently won their third consecutive ACC tournament title. Also, winners of the ACC regular-season championship, this was the first season in which they won both the regular season and tournament since they were coached by Kay Yow in 1986. But NC State’s most successful season since the 1980s was almost over as the Wolfpack were losing by a point to Notre Dame before Raina Perez stole the ball with 21 seconds left in the game to give Pack a 64-63 lead. Notre Dame would then miss a jumper and Perez would get a rebound and make two free throw shots that sealed the win for NC State 66-63, advancing to the first Elite Eight in the program's history since 1998. While Perez made the play that gave the Wolfpack the lead, it was players like Kai Crutchfield that kept them in the game by scoring 14 points and making half her shots while playing a team-high 40 minutes in the game. Elissa Cunane, Jada Boyd, Kayla Jones, and Jakia Brown-Turner also helped keep the back in the game by securing rebounds and scoring points that kept the game close. Heading into the final quarter of play

down 7 points, ESPN’s win probability metric gave the Wolfpack a 19.6 chance of winning the game. The Wolfpack would quickly bring the game within 2 points early into the 4th quarter but Notre Dame would increase their lead to 8 points with six minutes left in the game. After defeating Notre Dame the Wolfpack were set up to play against UCONN for a chance to reach the Final Four. UCONN one of the best basketball programs in the nation has reached every Final Four Since 2007. Although NC State was the higher seeded team, they had to travel to Connecticut and play in their opponent's home state. Many NC State fans and neutral observers questioned the fairness of higher seeded NC State playing in Connecticut, UCONN’s home state. Still, there was a game to be played. UCONN took control of the game early, taking a 9 point lead halfway through the second quarter. The Wolfpack mounted a comeback in the second half and got within two points of tying the game two minutes into the third quarter and when the quarter ended State trailed by just a point 44-43. The fourth quarter was back and forth as State took the lead on a Jada Boyd layup early in the fourth quarter and would take a 4 point lead after Diamond Johnson made three pointer the next possession, but UCONN would quickly regain a two point lead behind their star No. 1 recruits Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd. With one minute left in the fourth quarter Elissa Cunane made a layup off the backboard to tie the game, after both teams failed to score for the rest of regulation there would be an overtime. The overtime was back and forth leading to NC State being down three points with 6 seconds left. Coach Wes Moore in a last second effort called a timeout and drew up a play for Jakia Brown Turner who made a three point shot to tie the game and send it into a second overtime. This marked history as the first Women’s NCAA tournament game in the elite eight to ever go into double overtime. The Wolfpack would fall in the second overtime marking the end of a historic season that saw the team win the conference regular season and tournament titles as well as reach the elite eight.

NC State's Women's Tennis Team is currently undefeated through seven games of ACC play for the first time in program history. Overall they’ve only lost one of their first twenty matches. This success has earned the Wolfpack women's team the second overall ranking in the nation. The Wolfpack Wrestling Team won their fourth ACC title in a row in 2021-2022. NC State’s Baseball Team is recovering from last year’s decision that barred the team from competing in the final four after an outbreak within the team. While they aren’t currently ranked in the top 25, Freshman Tommy “Tanks” White is currently 2nd in the Nation in home runs and captivated by social media with a stretch of 9 home runs in 10 games. NC State Football had success accomplishing a 9 win season with wins over Clemson, Florida State, and UNCChapel Hill. Offensive Lineman Ikem Ekwonu is expected to be a top pick in this year's upcoming draft while the team returns most of their starters on defense. The success program-wide has been recognized nationally as Athletic Director Boo Corrigan has been awarded the Cushman & Wakefield Athletic Director of the year award. The award highlights the efforts of athletics directors at all levels for their commitment and positive contributions to student-athletes, campuses and their surrounding communities

I know that all good things must come to an end but I didn’t expect it to come so soon I don’t know how I’ll ever fill this space And I don’t know if it’ll ever get easier Each day seems to be harder than the last And just when I think I’ve accepted it, I remember I remember and remember and remember And I don’t know if I’ll ever forget what you looked like laying there in that casket I think that was the first time I’d ever seen you without your glasses With a full face of makeup, Lashes, foundation, brows Whole face beat to the gawds Not a hair out of place Your blue shirt was pressed, not a wrinkle insight Laying there, peacefully surrounded by padding All I remember is my breath leaving my lungs And me constantly whispering for you to get up That this was fake That this was some sick joke That you were going to sit up and laugh Find your glasses and speak Speak to all of the crying people Silence the wailing cries And I don’t know if I can ever forget All the memories shared All the lost future plans of linking Partying until we forgot all of our worries Nor do I even know if I want to forget But all I do know is that I loved you And I promise to love you until my time ends too.

Cards games And Culture: BSB SPADES WORKSHOP Jaz Bryant Correspondent

On Mar.10, 2022, the Black Students Board hosted a

Spades' Workshop. Spades is a card game that holds cultural significance in the AfricanAmerican culture. It originated in Cincinnati, Ohio in the 1930s. The game was popularized by Black troops during World War II as they would play the game with each other. Upon their return, the game spread from the Midwest to other parts of the country. There are many different ways to play spades depending on the region a person is in. Upon entering the suite, there were multiple tables set up with seats for four players and a deck of cards in the center. Members of the Black Student Board worked to ensure that as people filed in, there were enough people for each game. After the tables were filled, Mya McDowell led a presentation on how to play spades. She started with spades etiquette such as not talking to your partner across the table and passing out the cards to the left of the dealer. She then went into spades jargon with words such as cut which is when a spades card is played over other suits, and other words like renege and boston. The next part of the presentation was on how to keep score of the game. During the presentation, McDowell referenced that the version BSB was teaching was not the only way to play. Finally, there was a pop quiz at the end of the presentation to ensure that players thoroughly understood the rules of the game. After the presentation, students began playing spades amongst themselves. They were also able to request songs to be added to the playlist that was providing background music. When students had questions about the game, they were prompted to ask a more experienced player. During the games, BSB Chair Madison Darley passed out refreshments for the players. After an hour, or about one full game of spades, the event came to an end. Nubian Message interviewed BSB Vice-Chair Mya McDowell, a third-year majoring in Microbiology, about her thoughts on the importance of the event and spades.

Nubian Message: What was the hardest part of gathering information for the presentation? Mya McDowell: The hardest thing was just picking one singular way and then also trying to eliminate my bias and not thinking like ‘okay that’s the way that I learned let’s go ahead and do it this way’ and trying to think ‘okay, which is the way that’s most universal to my knowledge?’ NM: What was your goal in hosting this workshop? MM: I think I just wanted an event through BSB where people could come in and still learn something… I wanted to give students a very fresh environment [and] a very welcoming environment that way they can learn without any hesitations. NM: Do you think knowing how to play spades has cultural significance or do you see a cultural significance in learning how to play games like this? MM: I think that spades definitely has cultural significance… because card games are a very big part of like Black American culture. I feel like it is cultural [because] that’s a game that a lot of Black people have interacted with… It’s a staple game at every single family reunion. It’s something that we really love to play and a game that we as Black people get very excited about… I really really think that it’s cultural in that sense. When talking to an inexperienced player about the effectiveness of the workshop, Nyawira Nyota, a senior double majoring in Foreign Language & Literature and Biological Engineering said “I learned a lot and actually playing the game was helpful [for] learning and Mya’s presentation was extremely helpful.” The spades workshop hosted by BSB created a safe environment where students could learn and practice playing spades.

Racialized Empathy Austin Modlin With everything that has been going Staff Writer

on in the past 2 years, there has been tragedy after tragedy. All these things going on have caused people to hold the time-tested belief that in times of great tragedy and turmoil, people are able to showcase the best of themselves, able to empathize with their fellow man. This is seen in the recent turmoil between Russia and Ukraine, with America announcing an added $800 million in security assistance being sent to Ukraine. While that can be the case, I believe that this ability to empathize can have its own conditions and limitations. Especially when it comes to black people. Russia had already started moving in on Ukraine back in 2021 when Vladamir Putin ordered the movement of troops and high artillery military equipment/ weapons to Ukrainian borders. The United Nations has sent out orders when it comes to the economic punishment of Russia for its recent attacks on Ukraine. Seeing how people have been talking about everything going on with Ukraine and the recent casualties from the Russian attacks on Ukraine, it’s made me realize how even with the presence of war occurring, racism still gonna find a way. The clearest example of this has been the videos of black people being forced out of refugee trains and allowing white Ukrainians up first. Ukrainian officials stated that they would have women and children as a top priority in boarding refugee trains to escape the ongoing conflict. However, it seems that it has only applied to European Ukrainians, not all Ukrainians. This added to the comments that news correspondents have made on the whole situation, it only reinforces the sad truth that empathy isn’t given until it's a nonPOC’s problem. One such comment came from Kyiv Charlie D’Agata, a senior news correspondent for CBS News, “This isn’t a place, with all due respect, like Iraq or Afghanistan that has seen conflict raging for decades. This is a relatively civilized, relatively European city where you wouldn’t expect that, or hope that it’s going to happen.” They aren’t even trying to hide what they mean by these statements anymore. It’s already challenging to escape from the conflict in Ukraine, add the barriers of race to this, it’s almost impossible for black people to find a sense of refuge. In Somalia, there has been numerous civilian casualties and child soldier recruitment

from Islamist group Al-Shabab. These attacks have left citizens scattered and displaced. There is also the fact that the Somalian conflicts haven’t covered nearly as much, nor incited action from international governments. Why does western media not give the same concern and energy for nonEuropean tragedies that it does for places like Ukraine? It’s hard to feel any sort of pain with what’s been happening in Ukraine when there are multiple cases of racism that have been highlighted during all this. How am I supposed to listen to the comments of Ukrainian officials talking about the tragedy of this situation when it’s these same officials that couldn’t care less about the death of Black and Brown Ukrainians? It’s not even surprising to me anymore. White people don’t care about conflicts and grieve over tragic events until it’s about people that look like them. The fact of the matter is that while what’s going on in Ukraine is tragic, the way that Ukraine is treating it’s black and brown citizens is a tragedy in of itself. I’m tired of the underhanded comments about how one would never expect a “civilized” place like Ukraine to be the center of violence. Especially when there are other countries that need the same empathy that’s being given to Ukraine. Where are the cries of empathy for them? Who is going to support them in their time of need?

“The fact of the matter

is that while what’s going on in Ukraine is tragic, the way that Ukraine is treating it’s black and brown citizens is a tragedy in of itself...Where are the cries of empathy for them? Who is going to support them in their time of need?”
