For everything there is a season…

I

t’s 95 degrees out. A typical late August day in Georgia—hot and sticky. But today when I was returning from my early morning Yoga class, I felt a slight breeze carrying the barest hint of change coming. Summer is tiring but there is the promise of a new season on the horizon. This August brings a special anticipation of change. For the past ten years, I’ve spent the better part of my days living and breathing Nuçi’s Space. It has been a glorious adventure. Looking back, I’m impressed with how such sorrow can give forth to such healing and finally to hope. And what a growth experience! I’ve had the good fortune to work with so many young men and women as they transition from adolescence to adulthood. I now grasp more fully what Gibran meant when he wrote about parents, “You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.” One life ending too soon gives birth to an idea and then to a living reality, a new season. Instead of being weighted down with the heaviness of August, I find that that little breeze of change is carrying me into the next season. I’m wondering what it holds and I’m excited by the possibilities. But before I’m carried away, I need to thank all the people who believed in and really “got” the idea for Nuçi’s Space and there are many. In 1999, I wrote my first “annual giving letter.” The response from my family and friends was such that we were able to start paying for therapy before our doors were even open. Many of this original group of donors have continued to give and to support Nuçi’s Space. They are the same people who have always been there for Pierre, KP, Nuçi and me. Thank you! And just as an aside, I’d like to thank the few people who never understood or “got” what we at Nuçi’s Space are trying to do. You’ve made us strive to articulate more clearly our mission. You’ve also underscored the need for creative thinking and solutions to dealing with Depression and suicide. I thought of you recently when I read in a book, “We have to believe that even the briefest human connections can heal. Otherwise, life is unbearable.” We’ll continue to do what we do and hopefully, you’ll “get” it.

Many thanks are owed but I won’t mention names because you know who you are. When I first got the idea for Nuçi’s Space, I was somewhat fearful. A dear friend asked, “If you don’t do it, who will?” Thank you! I vowed to myself never to be afraid again (or at least to try). I could never have developed my idea without the very special people who work at Nuçi’s Space. They started out as my children and have become my peers and my friends. They are Nuçi’s Space! The psychiatrists and therapists (and their office people) have been everything I could have hoped for and more. They go above and beyond and give me hope for the state of mental health care. And to my musicians! You are the pulse that makes us beat. And to those we help. Thank you for the privilege. You are our reason for being. Space prohibits my listing the myriad of people who leave an indelible impression on Nuçi’s Space. I hope you’ll forgive me and know that you have my profound thanks. But I can’t journey into that next season without thanking the most important people in my life: To Pierre for being the best husband and for giving me two beautiful sons. He is always there for me. He is my touchstone. To KP for being the best “first” son ever. He is always there for me, even in the middle of the night when everybody else is asleep. And of course, To Nuçi for being the best “last” son ever. His short life inspired the nurturing, understanding, compassion and insight that define Nuçi’s Space. Without the three of you, my life would be in black and white. Thank you one and all!

Nuçi’s Space Expands Its Youth Program We are pleased to announce that, thanks to a generous grant from the Mockingbird Foundation (www.mockingbirdfoundation.org), Nuçi’s Space has begun its Camp Amped After School program. Camp Amped After School (CAAS) is based on Nuçi’s Space’s Camp Amped summer program and incorporates all of the cool parts of Camp Amped into a less intensive semester-long program. CAAS provides an opportunity for young musicians who cannot attend the Camp Amped summer program to play in a band with their peers and become more involved with Nuçi’s Space. Thirteen students are taking part in the first installment of CAAS, and they will be showcasing their hard work at a Grand Finale on Sunday, November 15 at the Melting Point. If you would like more information about Camp Amped After School, please contact Laura Ford at laura@nuci.org

Camp Amped 2009 Wrap-Up To meet increasing demand for spots in Camp Amped, this summer Nuçi’s Space offered two sessions of its youth outreach program, doubling the number of participants from last year. The June 8–20 and July 6–18 sessions were both a huge success, with a total of 40 young musicians enrolled for the summer. The last Saturday of each session students put on a rock show for a packed house at Nuçi’s Space, with approximately 200 people in attendance at each Grand Finale. For pictures, sound bytes and more information, please go to www.nuci.org and click on the Camp Amped 2009 button. If you would like to sponsor Camp Amped, or if you are interested in attending Camp Amped 2010, please email Laura Ford at laura@nuci.org.

S.P.A.C.E. Race 2009 nuçi’s space

Student Organization President

Lindsey Epperly

This year’s S.P.A.C.E Race is quickly approaching, and preparations are well underway. The date is set for Saturday, October 24 at 9:00 am, and will take place on the University of Georgia campus. The S.P.A.C.E. Race is a 5k run/walk to support Nuçi’s Space and raise awareness about the issues of depression and suicide. Whether you are a serious runner, casual jogger or simply want to help, there is a way for you to participate. Of course, you can register to run the race and get your friends and family to sponsor you. You can even form a team of runners for a great group activity. If you are unable to run, you can be a phantom runner or volunteer. All registered participants will receive a 2009 S.P.A.C.E. Race t-shirt. You can register online or by mail using the form included in this newsletter. This year will bring some changes that are designed to improve the runners’ experience and further benefit Nuçi’s Space. First, runners will be encouraged to pick up their numbers at

Nuçi’s Space the day before the race, October 23. This will make the morning of the race even smoother for runners, as they will be able to avoid long registration lines. Nuçi’s Space is also holding its 9th Anniversary party the night before the race from 5:30–10:00 pm, so runners will be able to check in and enjoy the anniversary party all at the same time. Second, a new set of awards, recognitions and incentives has been developed to encourage runners to raise additional money to support the programs and services of Nuçi’s Space. More information, as well as an online registration form, is available at www.nuci.org/spacerace. We believe this will be a great year for the S.P.A.C.E. Race and appreciate your support.

Nuçi’s Space is currently presenting a once in a lifetime chance to see Widespread Panic, Drive-By Truckers at Voodoo Fest (other featured Voodoo Fest bands include Kiss, Eminem, The Flaming Lips and Jane’s Addiction) in New Orleans from October 30–November 2. Rocknraffle.com offers a chance to win, and the best part is that tickets are in the form of a $1 donation made to Nuçi’s Space.

Rock N Raffle was created with the help of Drive-By Truckers, Widespread Panic, and Plexus Web Creations, all long-time, loyal supporters of Nuçi’s Space. 100% of the proceeds from the online contest will benefit Nuçi’s Space. “Rock N Raffle will be marketed and publicized nationwide through social media channels,” said Ellie MacKnight, of Widespread Panic who also serves on the board of Nuçi’s Space. “We love this idea as a fundraiser because with the help of Plexus Web Creations, the site designers and free publicity from tools such as Twitter and Facebook, there are virtually no expenses. We hope fans of the bands and Voodoo Fest will make significant donations in order to increase their chances of winning.” The contest will close on September 30, 2009 so that one lucky winner can be chosen on October 2, 2009 to receive: → Airfare: two round trip airline tickets courtesy of AirTran Airways from anywhere AirTran flies in the continental United States to New Orleans. → Accommodations: three-night stay at the New Orleans Marriott, the official hotel of Voodoo Fest.

→ VIP Treatment: Two (2) LOA Lounge (VIP) Voodoo Fest passes with swag from Widespread Panic and Drive-By Truckers and Special Side Stage Viewing Access for the Widespread Panic performance as well as: ✓ Reserved parking in the LOA parking lot ✓ Line free entrance ✓ Raised viewing area

✓ Complementary classic New Orleans lunch buffet with signature drinks daily ✓ Complementary dinner buffet with a Bourbon Street style drink specials nightly ✓ Continuous full bar service ✓ Exclusive live performances ✓ Private bathrooms ✓ Much more to come… * Must be 18 to enter the raffle, 21 to take advantage of drink specials included in the prize. To enter the contest and support Nuçi’s Space, go to www.rocknraffle.com. For each $1 donation you make, your name will be entered into the grand prize drawing that will take place on October 2, 2009.
