I almost mo ost missed the True Bl Blood lood d train. When it first came out one of my friends raved about it; she lent me the DVD and insisted that I give it a shot, but the boxset sat on my dining room table for about three months before I handed it back, having barely read the blurb on the back. I just wasn’t that excited about another vampire show, set in a small town in the American deep south. Yawn. Then one rainy weekend, earlier this year, another friend forced me into it. “You’ll love it!” he promised. “Let’s just watch the first ep and then you can decide if you want to keep going on not.” Turns out my friends were both right – the show is freaking awesome!

Needle Nee dless ss to say, say we w polished off the entire season by Needless that Sunday night, and I raced out and bought season two (also devoured over a weekend). Then, I was gutted to learn that the third season wasn’t going to be available for several months... Now, FINALLY, the date has arrived! Sookie, Bill, Jason, Eric, Tara and Lafayette are back when True Blood season three is released on DVD and Blu-ray on May 18! Also out this month are a suite of Academy Award winning films (The King’s Speech, The Fighter), a few fun comedies (Morning Glory, The Dilemma, Love & Other Drugs) and a bunch of hot new music releases, including albums from Ben Harper and Lady Gaga. Enjoy!

Evolution of a Viagra Salesman. “I had long interviews with and spent time with Jamie for months before the film started, and we talked a lot about the pharmaceutical world and his experience in it,” Gyllenhaal tells cinemaspy.com. Slipping into character opposite Hathaway was fairly easy, he adds,

as they’ve been friends for close to a decade. They’ve starred opposite each other once before, in 2004’s Brokeback

played husband as wife. But as Gyllenhaal points out, Brokeback only briefly touched on their marriage, as it was more focused on the romance between Gyllenhaal’s Jack, a rodeo cowboy, and Heath Ledger’s Ennis, a ranch hand. “Having gone through the journey of not only having made a movie, but then also the response from audiences to the movie [Brokeback Mountain], I think, brought us very close,” Gyllenahaal says. “That was a very tight-knit group and remains so to this day. Ben Harper It’s been a long time coming. In fact, the first tracks for Ben Harper’s new album, Give Till It’s Gone, were laid down over a year ago. But a whole lot can change in a year, as Harper knows only too well. The Grammy Award-winning singer recorded a bunch of material for this album in the first quarter

perspective

Quite often movie tie-in games like this suffer on the fringe formats. With the game’s production often motivated by a desire to piggyback on the success of a film, we often see games “cut and pasted” across formats, suffering dramatically in the process. Sega, however, has designed specific versions of Thor for the Wii and DS, taking into account their unique hardware personalities. The Wii version mixes up the combat and controls to allow gamers to move the Wii-Mote through the air to control Thor’s hammer. It also provides different levels - including on-rails flying sections - and further differentiates itself with alternative characters and endings. Unable to compete with the power of the console machines, the DS version converts the action to a side-scrolling adventure/ beat ‘em up. And while nothing was confirmed at the time of writing, we’ve heard a version is coming to 3DS down the track.

[DVD] THE KING’S SPEECH (OUT NOW) This multiple Oscar winner stars Colin Firth as stuttering King George VI. Set in England in the stiff-upper-lip 1920s and 30s, the king is floundering under the weight of his embarrassing speech impediment at a time when the country needs a strong and eloquent leader. Enter rough-mannered Australian speech therapist Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush) who is tasked with the job of untwisting the royal tongue. As failed actor Logue grows closer to his student, he discovers the deeper psychological issues that are responsible for the King’s affliction and employs

THE FIGHTER (MAY 26) It’s hard to pick the better performance in this stellar fight film – a muscular Mark Wahlberg as talented boxer Micky Ward, or a thinned downed Christian Bale as his crack-addicted brother, Dicky. In this compelling true story, we learn that Dicky had his own shot at success in the ring until drug addiction prematurely ended his career. Now it’s Micky’s turn to take on the boxing world, but as he carries his brother’s addiction on his shoulders, he fears he’ll buckle before he grabs the belt.

his wild colonial charm to break down his walls of privilege. Helena Bonham Carter puts in an excellent performance as snobbish Queen Elizabeth and Michael Gambon is deliciously imposing as King George V.

GULLIVER’S TRAVELS (MAY 4) Jack Black may not be the obvious choice to breath new life into Jonathan Swift’s classic 18th-century novel, but he certainly brings a modern interpretation to one of the greatest adventure stories ever told. Black plays nerdy Lemuel Gulliver who works as a mail clerk in a busy newsroom. When he bluffs his way into a travel assignment in the Bermuda Triangle, his life becomes very weird, very quickly when finds himself as a giant in the land of the little people.

TANGLED (MAY 11) A star-studded cast including Mandy Moore, Ewan McGregor and Steve Martin provides the voice talent for this very modern Disney tale. Charming bandit Flynn Rider is the most wanted man in the kingdom. Ducking the king’s soldiers, he hides out in a mysterious tower and encounters the exiled Rapunzel. The duo plot to escape the tower and go on the run together in a journey that takes them from one end of the magical kingdom to the other.

THE TUNNEL (MAY 26) The first Australian film to be funded by members of the public via an online fundraising campaign, The Tunnel enters the dark world that exists in the disused train tunnels beneath Sydney’s St James Train Station. Investigative journalist Natasha Warner leads a crew of four into the underground labyrinth to investigate an alleged Government cover-up. However, what she actually finds lurking within the eerie tunnel system is much more sinister.

BURLESQUE (MAY 18) Christina Aguilera plays Ali, a small-town waitress who has stars in her eyes. She moves to Los Angeles with big dreams and encounters a burlesque club and its tough-as-nails owner Tess (Cher) and her assistant Shane (Stanley Tucci). The club’s headlining star, Nikki (Kristen Bell), has seen better days and she is beginning to lose her battle with the bottle. Ali thinks she has what it takes to steal the show, and the heart of the club’s handsome bartender, Jack (Cam Gigandet).

THE DILEMMA (MAY 12) Director Ron Howard returns to comedy in style with an all-star cast that includes Vince Vaughn, Kevin James, Winona Ryder, Jennifer Connelly and Channing Tatum. In the mould of typical Vince Vaughn characters, Ronny Valentine is a fast-talking deal maker who is in business with his best friend, Nick Brannen (James). When Ronny discovers that Nick’s wife (Ryder) is cheating on him, it leads him to question his relationship with longtime girlfriend, Beth (Connelly).

THE TOURIST (MAY 4) Johnny Depp plays Frank, an American tourist who has escaped to Italy in an effort to get over his last ill-fated relationship. While in stunning Venice he encounters a beautiful woman (Angelina Jolie) who catches his eye and his heart. However, the mysterious Elise is not all that she seems and Frank quickly finds himself in well over his head as he becomes entangled with her past and the men who hunt her. Paul Bettany delivers an excellent supporting performance as a police inspector.

LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS (MAY 4) The chemistry between Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal lights up the screen in this heartwarming drama. Jamie (Gyllenhaal) is a swaggering pharmaceutical salesman who has built his success on his looks and charm. But when he meets Maggie (Hathaway), a creative free spirit who is afflicted by a life-threatening disease, he is forced to delve well below the surface and confront his deeper feelings about life, love and his own self worth.

From the writer of The Devil Wears Prada comes this foray into the egotistical world of breakfast television. Harrison Ford plays cynical veteran newsman, Mike Pomeroy, forced to take a job at a struggling breakfast news program. Mike believes his new position to be well below his station and makes no bones about letting everyone know it. In between screaming matches with his co-host (Diane Keaton), Mike refuses to cooperate with his ambitious young producer, Becky Fuller (Rachel McAdams) and endeavours to make her life as difficult as possible. The problem is that Becky’s future rests on the success of the show. (MAY 5)

[MUSIC] LADY GAGA: BORN THIS WAY (MAY 23)

After dropping two hit albums consecutively in 2008 and 2009, Lady Gaga has pushed the boundaries and established herself as this generation’s Madonna. Now, following more than a year of silence, the pressure is on for her new third album to reach the same heights. And we can assure you that it most definitely does. Lead single “Born this Way” is a back-to-basics bold Gaga anthem that will be all over radio, TV and clubs, but that’s not to say she hasn’t broken new ground with this album.

Gaga seems to rely more on her soaring vocals in this album than she has in the past, and with great affect. The pulsating beats, killer hooks and solid melodies are all still here, but there’s a certain edge to the vocals that signals Gaga is all grown up.

Too Cool to Care is the second studio album by rap duo New Boyz – aka Earl “Ben J” Benjamin and Dominic “Legacy” Thomas – who hail from Hersperia in the great state of California. The teen rappers are already notching up the achievements: they met as performers in LA’s street dance Jerkin Crew, and launched their music career in 2009 with the viral single, “You’re a Jerk”. If the new alltoo-catchy lead single “Break My Bank” is anything to go by, with its synth-string melody and hip-hop backbeats, the album is going to be a chart topper.

This American indie rock group are perhaps the most consistent band of the modern generation, and they don’t put a foot wrong with their seventh studio album. It may have been three years and several individual side projects since 2008’s Narrow Stairs, but absence has indeed made the heart grow fonder. Here we find a masterfully crafted album, perhaps a little less guitarheavy than the band’s diehard fans might be used to, but nonetheless a fitting tribute to a band at the top of their game.

KATY B: ON A MISSION (MAY 6)

AC/DC: LIVE AT RIVER PLATE DVD/BLU-RAY (MAY 13)

THE OFFICIAL ROYAL WEDDING ALBUM (MAY 6)

After releasing two hit singles, “Katy On a Mission” and “Lights On”, last year, big things are expected from Katy B’s debut album. And the singer-songwriter from South London doesn’t disappoint, with her take on dubstep and funky house ripping the subgenres from the clubs of London and planting them firmly in the mainstream. “Broken Record” is perhaps the highlight of the album, while the sultry “Disappear” follows swiftly behind in a genre-defying melting pot.

This stunning DVD proves that it’s not quite mission impossible to capture all the epic electricity of an AC/DC stadium rock concert. Filmed with no less than 32 high-definition cameras over three nights in Buenos Aires, the film presents the Aussie rock gods in all their glory and serves up 19 of the band’s greatest hits, including “Back in Black”, “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap”, “Thunderstruck”, “Highway to Hell” and “For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)”.

Perhaps you’re not quite hooked up enough to have scored an invitation to William and Kate’s big day, but this album is the next best thing to having actually attended the wedding of the decade. Prince William and Kate Middleton tied the knot to a classical Church of England score performed by the Choirs of Westminster Abbey and the Chapel Royal. Do yourself a favour and get it on collectable vinyl, or even kick it old school and score the cassette tape release.

GLEE: THE MUSIC PRESENTS THE WARBLERS (OUT NOW)

THE WOMBATS: THIS MODERN GLITCH (OUT NOW)

JENNIFER LOPEZ: LOVE? (OUT NOW)

After stunning the indie world with their debut album, A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation, way back in 2007, the band has travelled a long road indeed to finally drop their hotly anticipated follow-up album in 2011. This time around, the British trio take their talent for light and breezey indie pop and shake it up with dance influences and somewhat darker lyricism. “Our Perfect Disease” is more broody than fans will expect, while “Tokyo (Vampires and Wolves)” introduces the band’s new dance-influenced direction.

Plenty of question marks surround Jennifer Lopez’s first release in almost three years, and not just in the title of the album. For her hyped comeback album, J-Lo is playing it safe and sticking to the same formula that has led her pervious albums to the top of the charts, and that’s not a bad thing. It features contributions by a who-who’s list of the music industry – listen for the influence of Tricky Stewart and The-Dream on “Louboutins”, The Neptunes on “Fresh Out the Oven” and Stargate on “Story of My Life”.

The infectious Glee soundtracks have become fast fan favourites, and the seventh release inspired by the hit TV show is set to join the list. Darren Criss and Chris Colfer are on lead vocals this time around for unexpected but irresistible versions of Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream”, Train’s “Hey Soul Sister”, Pink’s “Raise Your Glass”, Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know”, and even old-school hits like The Beatles’ “Blackbird” and Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?”.

BEN HARPER: GIVE TILL IT’S GONE WORDS Shane Conroy

Despite treading a rocky road in his personal life of late – namely his split from wife Laura Dern – Ben Harper has managed to craft a 10th studio album that hits all the right notes. Lead single “Rock N’ Roll is Free” serves as Harper’s love letter to the genre and was inspired by his performances alongside rock legend Neil Young. But that’s not the only treasure on his first solo album since Both Sides of the Gun in 2006. Indeed, “Pray That Our Love Sees the Dawn” presents Harper at his wistful best, while “Spilling Faith” and “Get There From Here”, both co-written with Ringo Starr, introduce an irresistible psychedelic edge. [ BLU-RAY]

WRESTLEMANIA XXVII (MAY 11) The 27th annual WrestleMania, held last month in front of more than 70,000 fans at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, drew the second highest international television audience in the event’s long history. And there’s very good reason for that. For starters, two iconic veterans – The Undertaker and Triple H – go hell for leather in a ‘No Holds Barred’ match that brings new meaning to the word ‘pain’. Then the action only gets better in a six-person mixed tag team match that pits John Morrison, Trish Stratus

and Snooki against Dolph Ziggler, Michelle McCool and Layla. But both those epic matches pale in comparison to the main event – a WWE Championship bout between current champ The Miz and the unstoppable John Cena, with a controversial appearance from The Rock.

22 BULLETS (MAY 19) Jean Reno is magnetic as retired mob boss Charly Mattei in this edge-of-yourseat French thriller. After retiring from a life of crime, ex-mafiso Mattei is brutally attacked and left for dead in a vicious shooting that leaves him fighting to recover from 22 gunshot wounds. When he learns that the hit was organised by a longtime friend and ally, Reno flips his lid and goes on a revenge spree that would make Quentin Tarantino feel a little queasy.

THE AVIATOR (MAY 4) Actor-director duo Leonardo Di Carpio and Martin Scorsese are responsible for a handful of hits, but perhaps none reach the lofty heights of The Aviator. Di Caprio plays infamous film producer, test pilot, entrepreneur, playboy and all-round eccentric Howard Hughes. He also delighted in highprofile romantic trysts with Hollywood leading ladies, Katharine Hepburn (Cate Blanchett) and Ava Gardner (Kate Beckinsale). Blanchett’s performance is one of many highlights.

THE TWILIGHT ZONE: SEASON 3 (MAY 11) If you’re not already a fan of Rod Serling’s groundbreaking sci-fi meets fantasy series, it’s about time you became one. In this series, Charles Bronson and Elizabeth Montgomery play the sole survivors of a nuclear holocaust, Buster Keaton plays a janitor who travels 72 years into the future, a young boy terrifies a town with his power to destroy anything and anyone at will, and a racist World War II soldier experiences the war from the perspective of a Japanese enemy.

PAN’S LABYRINTH (MAY 5) Director Guillermo del Toro showcases his talent for stylised horror in this frightening film. It opens in Franco’s Spain in 1944, where episodes of brutal violence are a real-world reality. Amidst the violence, del Toro gives us momentary refuge in a young girl’s imagination and the innocent fairy world she has created. But when she is forced to confront a sinister demon called The Pale Man, her dream turns into a gory nightmare that you won’t soon forget.

TRUE BLOOD: THE COMPLETE THIRD SEASON (MAY 18) Welcome to the weirdest little town in America. The people of Bon Temps have already been plagued by a tribe of warring vampires and a bloodthirsty demon who possessed the entire town. Now, Sookie (Anna Paquin) enters into a dangerous underworld where the powerful Vampire King commands an army of werewolves and holds Sookie’s beloved Bill (Stephen Moyer) hostage. Meanwhile, Jason (Ryan Kwanten) gets himself in over his head when he falls for a mysterious woman.

HUMAN PLANET (MAY 5) This stunning eight-part British nature documentary is compulsory viewing in brilliant Blu-Ray high definition. It investigates the remarkable lengths human’s go to in order to survive life in the planet’s most extreme environments. The series delves into deserts, jungles, grasslands, rivers, mountains and even the Arctic to reveal the innovative, and at times brutal, lifestyles of the world’s most remote communities. It’s hard to watch in parts, but in whole a unforgettable viewing experience.

THE MISSION (MAY 11) This 1986 cult classic starring Robert De Niro and Jeremy Irons has been primped and polished for its long overdue BluRay release. Set in South America in the 18th century, colonial forces are at war for the land while greedy opportunists are plundering the country and establishing the slave trade. Mendoza (De Niro) is one such man. However, after he kills his brother in a rage, he seeks redemption among missionaries, but must first endure an agonising penance to earn his forgiveness.

BOOGIE NIGHTS (MAY 5) This the 1997 hit that introduced Mark Wahlberg as a serious actor with bigtime potential. Wahlberg plays Eddie Adams, aka Dirk Diggler – a high school dropout who scores a menial job at a so-hot-rightnow nightclub. When he encounters porn director Jack Horner (Burt Reynolds), he is introduced to a new world where certain endowments are worth big bucks. While Adams becomes a fast hit in the porn world, he struggles when the trappings of his success go straight to his head.

AC/DC: LIVE AT RIVER PLATE WORDS Shane Conroy

It’s not easy to do justice to the grandeur of an AC/DC stadium rock concert, but this brilliant Blu-Ray presentation has definitely achieved the dirty deed. Filmed with 32 strategically positioned high-definition cameras over three nights in Buenos Aires, this beautifully produced film captures every detail of the world’s greatest rock show. Around 300,000 screaming Argentinean fans create an electric atmosphere to showcase 19 of the band’s greatest hits including “Back in Black”, “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap”, “TNT”, “Thunderstruck”, “Highway to Hell”, and an incredible finale with “For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)”. [GAMES] AVAILABLE AT

GLEE KARAOKE REVOLUTION 2 WII Gleeks all over the country will get the opportunity to get Will’s praise, or Sue’s ire, in this sing-a-long video game. The 20 tracks on the disc come from the second half of the show’s first season, and the game’s technology accurately tracks your voice to determine how well you’re going and to offer instructions on how to improve. You can also add vocal effects to get the sound just right.

PORTAL 2 PS3, 360, PC Initially an experimental and free extra included in the special edition of Half-Life 2 (called The Orange Box), Portal achieved instant popularity, nominated by many as 2009’s game of the year. For the sequel, developer Valve is going full hog, releasing a standalone full-priced game with the content to match. Basically a first-person puzzle game, the premise has you playing a captive, Chell, forced to navigate increasingly more difficult rooms to satisfy the

curiosity of a rogue A.I., gLaDOS. Chell has at her disposal a portal gun: you shoot a portal in one spot and a second portal in another, allowing you to jump between the two. What seems simple gets deviously challenging as the rooms become harder to solve and the sequel ramps up the complexity by providing a bigger range of tools and obstacles for Chell to face alongside a deeper narrative. Surely one of the year’s best.

TIGER WOODS PGA TOUR 12: THE MASTERS 360 Tiger Woods’ form on the green may be lacklustre, but he’s managed to release his best golf video game in years. As the title suggests, the inclusion of the famed Masters event is the prize for golf fans, but a host of other courses are available. This year’s all inclusive career mode and the inclusion of a caddy that offers shot tips are the best improvements.

PILOTWINGS RESORT 3DS Easily one of the best looking games available for the 3DS during its launch, Pilotwings Resort is an arcade flight simulator that has you racing through the skies above the tropical island first seen in Wii Sports Resort. Players control a large range of aircraft, racing through courses, avoiding obstacles and exploring for secrets.

sanity.com.au

VIRTUA TENNIS 4 PS3, 360, WII, PC The famed arcade tennis series returns with improved visuals, refined gameplay and futuristic new controls. Players use Kinect, Move or MotionPlus to motion control their players, tasked with getting the timing just right to pull off the best shots. The game features current and legendary players, a range of game modes and for PS3 owners with 3DTVs, an awesome firstperson view.

DARKSPORE PC This top-down action/ RPG places gamers in a universe where a DNAaltering virus released by alien scientists has ravaged all life in the galaxy. A few survivors manage to create a version of the virus they can control, and fight back. As one of these survivors you get to use the virus to customise and build over 100 mutant creatures to take into battle. The co-op mode is particularly fun.

MICHAEL JACKSON: THE EXPERIENCE 360, PS3 Already available on Wii, PSP and DS, Michael Jackson’s hugely popular dance game has finally made it to the 360 and PS3, using Kinect and Move technology respectively. Players are empowered to dance and sing along to over 30 of Jacko’s greatest film clips, with the technology capturing the performances and displaying them on screen. There are some ace multiplayer modes, too! PRO EVOLUTION SOCCER 2011 3D 3DS If you’re looking for a good game to test out the 3D capabilities of Nintendo’s new handheld, this is certainly a fine option. The beloved soccer simulation brings its famed great controls, A.I and massive Master League career mode to the handheld, and a new third-person camera combined with the 3D effect really gives you the impression of being on the pitch. It’s the world game!

PLAYSTATION MOVE HEROES PS3 Sony’s greatest platform heroes have joined forces to tackle a host of motionbased minigames that make use of Sony’s Move controller. It’s Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter and Sly and Bentley that find themselves facing off in the Inter-Universal Hero Games, with events broken into five broad Move-based categories, each of which offer tasks beyond what you’d expect from party games of this ilk.

CONDUIT 2 WII The Wii has been starved of mature first-person shooters, but with Conduit 2 they are gifted a solid single player, and fantastic multiplayer genre title. The premise follows an alien invasion, where the enemy forces use conduits to transport themselves around Earth. As government agent gone rogue Michael Ford, you must use a spaceship to travel the globe to the locations the aliens have overrun.

[GADGETS] LITE-ON ENAU MOBILE BACK-UPS This nifty and thrifty ($69) device is quite handy for tech savvy consumers who are frequently looking to move large chunks of data around. It’s an 8x external DVD/CD burner that easily slips into your suitcase at only 300g and it is powered through a USB cable. All you need to do is plug it into your PC for instant data transfer. Not known for producing the sexiest

10.1” screen. The tablet runs on the latest Android operating system, called Honeycomb, and it has some great features that help navigation, in particular, backwards and forwards buttons where the thumbs naturally sit, to prevent users from having to let go to swipe across the screen. It also

smartly places all of your settings in one place, which is extremely user friendly. But it is the Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor running the Galaxy that is the killer feature: it really provides a performance boost, making this a treat for running media, browsing the web and playing games. A solid alternative!

PARROT AR.DRONE FUTURISTIC RC Remote control hobbyists will find this futuristic gadget hard to resist. It’s a quadricopter, which means it has four propellers – one at each corner of its lady beetle-like appearance – that gives it amazing stability and control. In addition, the vehicle has smartphone technology such as gyroscopes and cameras built-in so that the computer can further stabilise control. This is a vital improvement to

standard remote-control helicopter designs, which have always been a tad challenging to master. It also means you can easily engage in combat with other Drones using Augmented Reality. Instead of a standard plastic controller, the Drone uses an iPhone or iPad for user input, even displaying video footage from the cockpit back to the screen over a Wi-Fi network. Tilting the

screen allows you to manoeuvre the Drone, and tapping fires at targets generated by the software or at other Drones.

ROCCAT KONE[+] MOUSE EXPERT GAMING Want to improve your online gaming? A good mouse means improved control, which equals a bigger kill count. The latest mouse out of ROCCAT, the Kone[+] is undoubtedly one of the finest on the market. It’s 6,000 dpi laser sensor ensures precise movements are tracked accurately

and it offers amazing button customisation, even allowing you to duplicate the amount of commands that come from a single button. This includes a four way mouse wheel, meaning it can slick down and left and right; there’s 24 different configurations in total. You can alter the

weight of the device, with little 5g blocks that can be inserted as desired, so it feels just right in your hand. It even has a nifty sensor that will detect the surface you’re using the mouse on and then optimise its tracking settings accordingly. Add in-depth software to help you set it all up and this is a gamer’s dream!
