ULTIMATE In the world of politics, information is everything. In the world of political memoirs, information can be deadly. Directed by famed filmmaker Roman Polanski, The Ghost Writer stars Ewan McGregor as the man hired to chronicle former British Prime Minister Adam Lang’s (Pierce Brosnan) life. As a reasonably unknown writer, he is persuaded to spruce up the first draft with the lure of a very profitable reward. But the project doesn’t come without its warning signs: the manuscript is in hot demand from the moment it lands in his hands, and his predecessor’s body is discovered drowned at sea. Never referred to by name, ‘The Ghost’ must weave the powerful and private man’s words into clever prose. His job is to transform a dull read into a sparkling story. The only problem is, there’s far more to the story than the writer was prepared for...
THE GHOST WRITER
WITH WITTY DIALOGUE AND A FAST-MOVING PLOT, THE GHOST WRITER’S TWISTS AND TURNS WILL KEEP YOU TRYING TO READ BETWEEN THE LIES UNTIL THE VERY LAST MOMENT. As he conducts interviews with both Lang and his wife Ruth (Olivia Williams) and begins to delve into the research, The Ghost begins to uncover a complex web of lies. Like much in politics, nothing is as it seems. Lang, meanwhile, has problems of his own. After dominating the UK political system for years, he has retired and retreated with his wife to high security premises on an island off the US coast. Tension is building between the married couple, which isn’t helped by his questionable relationship with his secretary, Amelia (Kim Cattrall). Push comes to shove when Lang is embroiled in a human rights scandal, which hints at the lengths he is prepared to go to preserve the close relationship between the US and the UK. Residing in the political heavyweight’s home, The Ghost stumbles upon some photographs and a phone number hidden by his dead predecessor. These clues lead him on a scavenger hunt across ocean and time to reveal the truth behind the lies. With no family to protect and a nose for detective work, The Ghost continues to search for the truth in the face of real danger. Who is telling the truth, who can he trust – and who wants him dead? From the director of The Pianist comes an intricately weaved plot, which builds suspense and layers of complexity masterfully. The Ghost Writer is pure Polanski. Originally written for paper, the best-selling novel The Ghost was adapted for the screen by Polanski and author Robert Harris. Harris, a former political columnist, makes no secret of the parallels drawn between his characters and former international political leaders. Shot in Germany but portrayed as Massachusetts, the film’s stark and merciless setting helps drive suspense and fear. The grey stretch of ocean and misty sand dunes are as cold as the beach house’s interior and lend themselves to an eerie atmosphere sure to send shivers down the spine.

Cut Copy As they release of their new album, Zonoscope, Melbourne trio Cut Copy celebrate their status as a decade-old overnight sensation. If New Order had a lovechild with Depeche Mode, and they left their offspring to gestate until the noughties, the result would be Cut Copy. In an age where everything old is new again, Cut Copy hit the mainstream in 2008 with their delightfully retro sounding second album, In Ghost Colours. The album reignited the eighties – sans bad hair and fluorescent overalls – and the southern trio made such an impact here and overseas that Lady Gaga requested that the boys open for her during her recent world tour. “It was one of those weird moments, where you’re not sure whether to burn the letter or frame it and put it on your wall,” frontman Dan Whitford reveals to Pitchfork.com. “We were simultaneously repulsed but also tantalised by the idea of touring with her for a whole year.” Needless to say, they declined Gaga’s offer. Zonoscope is a departure from the band’s work to date, with Whitford revealing that “it’s very different from the previous album”. “It’s still a little bit of electronic and dance, as well. We haven’t totally changed or anything, but we do have a bit more of a guitar based sound with a lot of the trash,” he explains. “I was obsessed with Fleetwood Mac’s
Tusk while working on this record – a lot of the Lindsey Buckingham tracks have a proto80s African feel. Also Talking Heads, Slave
to the Rhythm by Grace Jones, and Malcolm McLaren’s Duck Rock album. And a lot of acid house era, post-rave indie music like Happy Mondays and Primal Scream.” Whitford, who also produced Zonoscope , admits that he was “obsessed” with hunting down old music for inspiration. “One of the things I like about listening to old music is how it affects you the same as pop songs you listen to today, but it comes at you from a totally different angle,” he says. “You hear things that take you off-guard or sound cool or out-of-context, and it’s that aspect that we try to bring to what we make.” Pegged as a “suite of futuristic visions built upon primal rhythm tracks”, Zonoscope’s first single, “Take Me Over”, perfectly encapsulates the almost-tropical vibe of the album. Whitford runs through the exotic arsenal of percussion that they gathered to give their tracks that infectious sultry propulsion, explaining that they used “all sorts of strange bongos, rototoms, congas, 10 kinds of shaker, 15 different cowbells; anything and everything”. Even wine bottles filled with different amounts of water make an appearance. “All the way along we had this weird vision of a tropical, jungle, tribal sound,” he says. “It was a place or an idea that we wanted to reach with some of the songwriting; to explore a looping hypnotic trance, and revise the whole palette of what Cut Copy was about.”

Dancing with the Stars THE BUSY SUMMER FESTIVAL SEASON IS IN FULL SWING! STEREOSONIC – IN REVIEW DATE: Nov 27 to Dec 5 LOCATION: Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth, Sydney, Melbourne ACTS: Calvin Harris, Carl Cox, Tiësto, Sebastian Ingrosso, Major Lazer, Infected Mushroom THE EXPERIENCE: With a modern dance line-up of big acts, this year’s Stereosonic festival was all spectacle. Tiësto’s stunning laser show and Calvin Harris’ sing-a-long dance hits were highlights. Highly recommended!
BIG DAY OUT 2011 – IN REVIEW DATE: Jan 21 to Feb 6 LOCATION: Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne, Gold Coast, Auckland ACTS: Tool, Rammstein, Iggy And The Stooges, Bloody Beetroots, Lupe Fiasco, Primal Scream, M.I.A, LCD Soundsystem and Booka Shade THE EXPERIENCE: The king of the Aussie festival scene, the Big Day Out drew another extremely deep (if recycled) line-up in 2011. Nasty clashes aside, the gig remained a must-experience event. The way it encapsulates the spirit of rock ‘n’ roll in its weather, crowd and sound is beyond reproach.
PLAYGROUND WEEKENDER DATE: Feb 17 to Feb 20 LOCATION: Wiseman’s Ferry, NSW ACTS: Lamb, Tricky, Kool & The Gang, De La Soul, Doves, Kate Nash, Caribou, Four Tet THE EXPERIENCE: Like Splendour in the Grass, this picturesque festival alongside the banks of the Hawkesbury River is worth travelling the country for. The place of hippie dreams – especially on fancy-dress night – this year’s lineup is extraordinary.
GOOD VIBRATIONS FESTIVAL DATE: Feb 12 to Feb 20 LOCATION: Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, Gold Coast ACTS: Faithless, Phoenix, Sasha, Nas & Damian Marley, Kelis, Ludacris, Erykah Badu, Friendly Fires. THE EXPERIENCE: Despite its humble beginnings, Good Vibes has grown to be one of the summer’s biggest events. The lineup mixes class with chart success, leaning towards the pop side of dance, rock and hip hop that tends to attract a younger audience.

THE SOCIAL NETWORK (MARCH 2) In a few short years, Facebook club at Harvard University in 2003 as Facebook evloves has garnered hundreds of from revengeful blog to millions of followers around the world, led the social media world-changing social media platform. Justin Timberlake revolution and changed the expands his growing way we all communicate. acting repertoire as web This is the story of Facebook entrepreneur Sean Parker founder Mark Zuckerberg, with great skill. played here by rising young star Jesse Eisenberg, and the no-holds-barred legal battle that raged around him as his allegedly discarded cofounders battled for a piece of the pie. Director David Fincher presents the notorious Zuckerberg as at once genius and socially-inept irritant. Told in a series of flashbacks, we are invited inside the boys BURIED (FEBRUARY 23) This is the best film you’ll see this year. Ryan Reynolds plays Paul Conroy, the extremely unfortunate protagonist who wakes up in coffin buried six feet underground. He has no memory of how he arrived there and has only a lighter and a mobile phone in his possession. With limited oxygen and a dwindling phone battery, Conroy makes panicked calls to no avail, until the phone rings and he is introduced to his perverted captor.
THE AMERICAN (MARCH 11) George Clooney sheds his good-guy image to get down and dirty in some good oldfashioned gun fighting in this off-beat crime thriller. Clooney plays Jack, an American assassin holidaying with his girlfriend in Sweden. Agents discover him, his girlfriend is killed in the crossfire, and Jack escapes to Italy. There, he sets to work crafting the ultimate weapon for a mysterious client, while ducking the faceless men who want him dead.
DINNER FOR SCHMUCKS (OUT NOW) An ambitious corporate executive on the rise, Tim Conrad (Paul Rudd) is over the moon when his boss invites him to an exclusive monthly dinner held for the company’s senior leaders. But, there’s a catch. Each dinner guest must bring with him the biggest buffoon he can find in order to ‘win’ the night. When he runs into Barry Speck (Steve Carell), a man who creates art from dead mice, Conrad thinks he has hit the jackpot... but he soon discovers that the stakes are higher than he imagined.
THE GHOST WRITER (FEBRUARY 16) Ewan McGregor plays a young up-and-coming author who is gifted the task of writing the biography of controversial British prime minister, Adam Lang (played charmingly by Pierce Brosnan), after the original author is found dead. However, as the ambitious young ghost writer investigates the dark side of Lang’s life, he reveals some answers that have grave consequences for his own safety. Controversial director Roman Polanski has crafted a surprisingly smart suspense thriller.
EAT, PRAY, LOVE (FEBRUARY 9) Julia Roberts stars in this adaptation of Elizabeth Gilbert’s novel about the spiritual journey she took after the break down of her marriage. After a brief but passionate encounter with a young actor (James Franco), Liz takes off overseas on a journey that takes her to Italy, India and Indonesia. In Italy she gorges on pasta, in India she visits a spiritual guru, and in Indonesia she finds romance with a charismatic Javier Bardem – but what she is really searching for is her lost sense of self.
JACKASS 3 (MARCH 17) The Jackass boys are back in town for one more spin around the carousel of pain. They’ve all come a long way since the devil-may-care days of their first film, but Hollywood glamour hasn’t softened the blows. Case in point is Johnny Knoxville’s insane eye-to-eye adventure with a raging bull, while Steve-O is up to his old gross-out antics with the help of high-speed cameras and slow-motion from multiple angles, and Chris Pontius introduces X-rated ping pong.
PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2 (FEBRUARY 24) The first Paranormal Activity movie was made for a paltry US$15,000 by independent filmmakers and went on to gross hundreds of millions worldwide as it developed into a monster cult hit. This film is more prequel than sequel to the first, and opens about two months before the events chronicled in the first film. When a happy family returns from the hospital with their newborn baby, they find their home trashed. And the culprits turn out to be much more sinister than neighbourhood thugs.
EASY A (OUT NOW) To call this bright, entertaining film simply a high-school comedy would be doing it a disservice. The plentiful one-liners are smart and actually funny, while performances by Lisa Kudrow, Amanda Byrnes and Thomas Haden Church lift the film out of teenage cliché and into genuine comedy. Olive (Emma Stone) is a typical Californian teenager, but when she pretends she is no longer a virgin to impress her best friend, word spreads around the school and her reputation is destroyed.

WORDS Shane Conroy
While Ben Affleck’s debut directorial outing may have left audiences a little cold, he announces himself as a genuinely talented filmmaker with this accomplished thriller. Set in tough, workingclass Boston, we are introduced to Affleck as Doug MacRay, the mastermind in his crew of bank robbers. MacRay is keen to retire from the business before he winds up in the slammer – or worse – however, the plot thickens when he falls for the female hostage of his so-called “last job”. If for nothing else, watch this film for its incredible action sequences, including a car chase through Boston’s narrow streets that will knock your socks off. (MARCH 9)

THE EXPERIMENT: ART VS SCIENCE (FEBRUARY 25) Sydney three-piece Art vs Science has been tearing up dance floors around Australia, and now finally drop their debut album on an adoring public. Many of the tracks were recorded live which imbues the album with a raw yet high-energy atmosphere. Lead single “Magic Fountain” has already gone gold and followup, “Finally See Our Way” is not too far behind. They’ll spend February and March touring the UK, Japan and Australia as their star continues to rise.
ZONOSCOPE: CUT COPY (OUT NOW) Melbourne’s own Cut Copy release their third studio album as a follow-up to 2008’s critically acclaimed In Ghost Colours. “Where I’m Going” and “Take Me Over” are the first singles from the album and join other sure-fire hits such as “Need You Now” and “Pharaohs & Pyramids”, and the deliciously moody “Blink and You’ll Miss a Revolution” and “Strange Nostalgia for the Future”. All in all, it’s an album that presents the band as a genuine mainstay of the Australian indie rock scene.
LET ENGLAND SHAKE: PJ HARVEY (FEBRUARY 18) The unshakeable PJ Harvey lets her unique musical vision loose on her homeland in her latest stirring release. You can never quite know what to expect from Harvey as she tends to reinvent herself on each album she releases. Here tracks such as “The Last Living Rose” and “Written on the Forehead” find her in a more contemplative mood, while her knack for emotive lyricism and catchy indie hooks is well and truly intact. Harvey is truly a rare talent and one you’ll obsessively play on loop.
FAITH SPECIAL EDITION: GEORGE MICHAEL (OUT NOW) George Michael’s 1987 hit “Faith” became a worldwide hit and remains perhaps the most widely appreciated album of his long career. Written and produced entirely by the man himself, the album served up what would be five top-20 hits and sell over 20 million copies worldwide. Over two decades later, revisit the magic of one of the best pop albums ever released and bob along to iconic tracks such as “Faith”, “I Want Your Sex”, “Hard Day”, “Hand to Mouth” and “Kissing a Fool”.
HARDCORE WILL NEVER DIE, BUT YOU WILL: MOGWAI (FEBRUARY 11) This is the seventh album from Glasgow experimental rockers, Mogwai. The band can be something of an acquired taste, but be warned that if you fall in love with the powerful sounds and minimalist lyrics of this band, you’ll fall hard. Band mates Dominic Aitchison, Stuart Braithwaite, Martin Bulloch, Barry Burns and John Cummings are remarkable musicians – buy this album if you are sick and tired of over-polished, radio-ready bubblegum pop and ready to expand your musical tastes.
NOT FINAL ARTWORK
PLANET PIT: PITBULL (MARCH 22) Akon, Skakira and Enrique Iglesias all lend their vocals to Pitbull’s sixth studio album, while David Guettra, Pharrell and Rodney Jerkins all lay down beats on the album. Pit has said that he wants every song on the album to be a hit single, and the lead track, “Hey Baby (Drop it to the Floor)” featuring T-Pain is a good start. Meanwhile, Pit has big plans of touring South America with the Black Eyed Peas and linking with Iglesias for a segment of his world tour.
CLUBBER’S GUIDE TO 2011 (OUT NOW) The best thing about dance music is that, like the hipsters who gyrate to it in the club scene, it never sits still. Indeed, dance music is constantly changing and the trend this year for is for big beats and volatile baselines. Dance masters Goodwill fill disc one with big room house tunes, while Top Piper takes disc two hostage with plenty of underground electronica. Tim Berg, Armand Van Helden, Martin Solveig, Bag Raiders, Tiga, Sweedish House Mafia, deadmau5, Eric Prydz and The Aston Shuffle all feature.
NOT FINAL ARTWORK
GOODBYE LULLABY: AVRIL LAVIGNE become her catch-cry, but (MARCH 4) this album is more than an The original rock chick finally over-produced, made-forreleases her fourth album radio hit. FREEZE TIME: JAY SEAN (FEBRUARY 25) British singer-songwriter, rapper, beatboxer and record producer, Jay Sean, may have made his name in the Asian underground, but he’s set to explode worldwide with the release of his fourth studio album, and second for US-based Cash Money Records. Lead single “2012 (It Isn’t the End)”, featuring a collaboration with Nicky Minaj, has already gone gold on iTunes and there’s little doubt that this album will follow suit. Either way, you’ll be hearing a lot more from Sean Jay in the future.
DESTINATION NOW: THE POTBELLEEZ WORDS Shane Conroy
It has been well over two years since Sydney dance act The Potbelleez stormed onto the scene with their self-titled debut album and hit single “Don’t Hold Back”. The awesome foursome enlisted the considerable talents of ARIA award-winning dance icon Paul Mac for this album, which they recorded at their beach-side studio at Bondi Beach. Lead single “Hello” is a fist-pumping club anthem, while the rest of the album is jammed with soaring sounds and shout-a-long hits that will pump out of clubs on Friday and Saturday nights around Australia. EAT, PRAY, LOVE (FEBRUARY 9) Hollywood A-lister Julia Roberts returns to the big screen in Eat, Pray, Love, the movie adaptation of Elizabeth Gilbert’s best-selling novel of the same name. After the breakdown of her marriage, Liz embarks on a brief but passionate affair with a young actor (James Franco), which makes her realise she’s never actually been single. Having never taken the time to be alonr and to get to know herself,
she takes off overseas on a spiritual journey where she eats (Italy), prays (India) and ultimately falls in love (Indonesia) – and along the way, discovers what she was really missing in her life.
FARGO (FEBRUARY 23) The Cohen brothers have a knack for creating off-beat but highly addictive moods in their films, and Fargo is an excellent testament to their skill in crafting tense atmospheres tinged with black comedy. Frances McDormand is endearing as pregnant cop Marge Gunderson, who seems somewhat naïve at first glance. But we soon find her to be a determined, hardnosed detective as she trails two hired goons who go on a murderous spree after a botched kidnapping.
THE CROW (OUT NOW) This 1994 action thriller is the original dark and moody comic book adaptation before the genre came into vogue. Brandon Lee plays Eric Draven, a rock musician who is revived form the dead to avenge his own murder and that of his fiancée. Tragically, Lee was killed on-set eight days before filming wrapped when a dummy bullet that had become lodged in one of the prop guns was fired into his stomach by a blank cartridge. Brandon’s father, Bruce Lee, also died under controversial circumstances after collapsing on the set of his final film, Enter the Dragon.
THE TWILIGHT ZONE: THE ORIGINAL SERIES, SEASON 2 (MARCH 9) In a dimension beyond the understanding of man, mysterious forces gather to torment our world with the unexplainable. The series that essentially created what we know today as science fiction was first broadcast in 1959, and is here remastered from the original camera negatives to create an authentic yet much improved screen experience. It presents stories of the bizarre and unexplained that are blended with humour, and often end with a brilliantly unexpected twist.
WALL STREET: MONEY NEVER SLEEPS (OUT NOW) Michael Douglas plays Wall Street whiz Gordon Gekko, who is released from prison after serving time for his financial crimes during the greed-is-good 1980s. He is pleased to find a new economic climate that’s geared towards maximising corporate profit and goes to work as scheming mentor to young trader Jake Moore (Shia LaBeouf). Moore is out for revenge against the man who brought down his former employer, and Gekko is just the man to help him achieve the corporate skullduggery he craves.
SAW VII 3D (MARCH 23) If there’s one movie that you don’t want to see in 3D, it’s Saw VII. That is unless of course you are a horror movie freak who is very hard to shock, because that’s what this movie is – completely shocking. Possibly the final chapter in the series, it focuses on a man who claims to be a Jigsaw survivor as he embarks on a book tour about his harrowing experience. However, a Jigsaw copy cat resents his rising celebrity and drags him into a real-life game of murderous cat-and-mouse.
THE SOCIAL NETWORK (MARCH 2) This portrait of the man who founded Facebook is unflinching in its portrayal of him as at once brilliant prophet and socially undeveloped nark. Mark Zuckerberg, played here by the talented Jesse Eisenberg, made billions from his social media invention while still at university, but is drawn into an extended legal battle as the allegedly discarded people who contributed to the project in its early days battle for a piece of the pie. Love him or hate him, there is little doubt that he changed the world.
RESIDENT EVIL: AFTERLIFE 3D (MARCH 2) This is the fourth installment of the successful video adaptation, and the first presented in stunning 3D. Milla Jovovich plays Alice, who is on the search for survivors of the T-virus outbreak that has devastated Los Angeles. After rescuing the remaining victims of the virus, they team up for an arse-kicking extravaganza against Albert Wesker and his evil Umbrella Corporation. The action sequences are well beyond par and are incredibly vibrant and blurfree in 3D grandeur.
THE OFFICIAL 2010 FIFA WORLD CUP FILM IN 3D (FEBRUARY 16) If you thought the greatest game of all was exciting in two dimensions, try watching it in 3D. This presentation captures just over an hour of highlights from the key games from the 2010 South African tournament. The fieldlevel shots are particularly brilliant in 3D and watching highlights such as Brazil’s first goal against North Korea soar into the net really showcases how incredible this format can be. The only drawback is the return of the vuvuzela as you are drawn into the big-stadium atmosphere in incredible detail.
RAIN MAN WORDS Shane Conroy
Dustin Hoffman is at the absolute height of his powers as autistic Raymond, while Tom Cruise cemented his reputation with an excellent performance as Raymond’s greedy brother Charlie Babbitt in this 1988 classic. When Babbitt discovers that his estranged father has passed away and bequeathed his vast fortune to Babbit’s autistic older brother, he busts Raymond out of the institution that cares for him with the intention of stealing the fortune back. Babbit, however, doesn’t count on falling in love with his uniquely brilliant brother. This film deservedly won four Oscars – find out why. (FEBRUARY 23)

MASS EFFECT 2 PS3 Already available on Xbox 360, the brilliant sci-fi opera Mass Effect from RPG specialists BioWare finally makes its way to the PS3. It’s an astonishing experience, as grand and operatic as the Star Wars universe, as action heavy as Gears of War, and with all the character and customisation depth genre fans expect. Brilliant gaming!
LITTLEBIGPLANET 2 PS3 With its amazing graphics, four player co-op platform action and mind-blowing level editing capabilities, the original LittleBigPlanet and its star, Sack Boy, were a sensation on the PlayStation 3. Foregoing traditional platform gameplay to provide a world that focuses on real physics - where you could use things like momentum, weight and physical properties (like a sponge being squishy) to solve the puzzles - it was
unique and fun. This sequel ramps up that element of the gameplay, as well as the visual experience. The real improvements are in the level editing component: now rather than just making your own platforming experience, you are given the tools to completely change the genre, how the AI behaves, and even the controls. These can then be shared online with other gamers for a truly endless, and awesome, experience.
MARVEL VS. CAPCOM 3: FATE OF TWO WORLDS 360, PS3 It’s an idea so awesome it just had to be fun. The legendary creators of Street Fighter, Capcom, take all their best characters in their large range of games and pit them against the superheroes from the Marvel universe. The oldschool 2D gameplay makes it easily accessible, while the ability to tag in two additional fighters during combat adds a lot of tactical depth. Fighter of the year for sure!
TEST DRIVE UNLIMITED 2 PS3, 360, WII If you are really into your cars, then this is an unmissable experience. You can drive some of the greatest cars in the world around two completely recreated (using satellite imagery) islands: Ibiza, Spain and Oahu, Hawaii. You’re challenged in a host of different race experiences, online and offline, as you build up your money and garage of cars. The visuals are amazing, too.
MARIO VS. DONKEY KONG: MINI-LAND MAYHEM! DS Reminiscent of the old Lemmings games, you are tasked with guiding an army of little Mario’s who are in perpetual motion across obstacle-filled worlds in pursuit of the princessstealing Donkey Kong. The action starts off simply enough, but as you progress you unlock more tricks, items and moves that you need to use smartly and with haste to solve each map. Good for the brain juice!
DE BLOB 2 WII, PS3, 360, DS This Aussie-made adventure is one of the highlight series of the Wii’s library. You control a blob of paint that is tasked with bringing colour and life back to the land after it’s turned into a drab grey by your typical evil-doer. This sequel features a host of new moves for your blob, as you move through the levels soaking yourself in different colours and throwing yourself against walls and enemies to create cool patterns.
KIRBY’S EPIC YARN WII Nintendo are so brilliant at thinking of new and inventive ways to rejuvenate the old-school side-scrolling platformer, and Kirby’s Epic Yarn is their latest such offering. By turning everything in the world to Yarn, including Kirby, they not only provide an astonishing visual spectacle, but awesome gameplay as our hero can change himself in all kinds of shapes, from a UFO to a surfing penguin and everything in-between.
BULLETSTORM PC, PS3, 360 From the same minds behind Gears of War, BulletStorm stars exiled and drunk space pirate Grayson Hunt, fighting for survival after crashlanding on a planet filled with flesheating mutants. An FPS at heart, everything about this game is over-the-top. Crazy environments, shocking dialogue, amazing weapons and some of the coolest and most addictive combat ever.
KINGDOM HEARTS RE:CODED DS Blending the magic of Disney with the RPG talents of Final Fantasy, developer Square Enix has been a match made in heaven for gamers. This latest adventure begins when Jiminy Cricket discovers a secret message in the journal that recounts the original game’s adventure. King Mickey wants to learn more, but as they delve into the secret, they get sucked back into Sora’s previous journey, only twisted beyond recognition. One for the kids!

[GADGETS] UDRAW BE CREATIVE The amazing success of the Nintendo Wii (85 million units and counting) has seen it besieged by a number of peripheral, most of which aren’t worth the box they’re packaged in. idea is to make them nice and small so you can put them in the accompanying bag for easy transport. Open them up and extend them out, however, and you have a great little speaker companion that can do decent stereo sound despite its relatively meagre 2.5w output. The biggest letdown with the device is that it uses its own custom-made cables, which are a bit ungainly and difficult to replace should things go wrong. Although, this does allow you to string multiple speakers together, creating a sound chain, should you desire. For frequent travellers who like to access quality sound with ease, they’re worth a look at $59.95.
KOBO WIRELESS EREADER 21ST CENTURY BOOKS We all know how fast the Amazon jungle is shrinking, which makes the era of the digital novel more than just about ease of use. With its slim design and 6” screen, the Kobo Wireless Reader is no doubt smaller and easier to carry around than most descent sized novels. This latest release from Kobo offers some key advantages over its predecessor. It is wireless, which means you can now shop online and buy books directly, downloading them to the device. Great if you’re on the road, even if the interface is a little archaic compared to
shopping on your PC. The processor speed has also been greatly increased, making it far faster to load up a book, and even to just flick between pages. We love how simple and easy this device is to use, and it comes with 100 classic books installed. That is enough alone for those who love to read to fork over its $179 asking price.
DELL INSPIRON ONE 2310 ALL-IN-ONE AND ONE-INALL No doubt you would have seen one of the sexy All-in-One iMacs: one big delicious screen with all the nuts & bolts built in behind it. To date the PC has struggled to match it for design and performance, but Dell’s Inspiron One 2310 gives it a good crack. For starters it looks a treat, from its bevelled screen to its cute wireless keyboard and mouse. You’ll want these
too, as while the monitor is a multi-touch screen it isn’t quite as responsive as we’d like: that is in part due to Windows 7 struggling in this area. Still, the machine does come with a Bluray drive and more than acceptable specs (Intel
Core i5 M460 2.53GHz, 6GB RAM, 1TB hard drive and a 1GB ATI Radeon HD 5470 graphics adapter although the specs are customisable) that’ll handle most of what you throw at it. It’s PC flexibility, in a Mac design.
BANG & OLUFSEN BEOSOUND 8 EERIE DESIGNS There’s certainly a lot of iPod docks out there, which isn’t much use if you have an iPad, is it? That is what the engineers over at Bang & Olufsen have noticed, so they’ve come up with this nifty and unique looking device. It features a
design capable of holding iPods, iPhones and the iPad, two 70w speakers (the colours of which are interchangeable) and it stands nearly upright, which means that unlike other docks that lean at an angle, the sound is blasted out at you. It also has a nifty remote, a headphone
jack and a USB port that allows you to connect it directly to your PC. The sound quality is quite excellent too, even if it does get a little strained when turned up to max. But such sophisticated design doesn’t come cheap, and at $1,500, it is one of the most expensive docks in existence.
