Growing up through the cultural diversity driven my vision become: This is Indonesia, my purpose

I was born on February 9, 1999 in Pangkal Pinang, Bangka Island. When I was 6 years old, I always dreamed about travelled this world. Everything just began when I was 14 years old, my parent allowed and supported me to continue my high school study to Yogyakarta, Java Island. Since I started to be lived out of my comfort zone, I realize that going somewhere and meet new people along the way are precious things. But going hometown one day and bring a conscious mind to solve the problem, is the most.

Hybrid: Old – New the Regional Library of Surakarta 2018 | Project Design Studio 5 Supervisor: Wisnu Setiawan, S.T., M.Arch., Ph. D

On this design studio project, each class of students were given the term of reference by the lecturer within theme on its direction. My class accepted the topic about Hybrid: Old – New in order to build a contemporary library for regional level area in a revitalization area of ex-sugar factory named Colomadu. The main specification of this project is student must implement the wide span structure. Shape exploration through volumetric study was played the big role to begin after site context.

6

Colomadu (Javanese - colo: mountain, madoe: sweet as sugar) means stack of sugar. Is one of the silent vestiges of industry revolution development on Central Java, especially Surakarta. Had a role as a sugar factory with intervention of Mangkunegaran Palace. One of the most prominent character was King Mangkunegaran IV. A pioneer of modern economics through the history of Central Java timeline. His people around the sugar factory also feel the changes. Indicate with economics' life getting better.

MASTER PLAN

The regional library is planned on Colomadu’s site, exactly beside. Old side is where the ex-sugar factory of Colomadu stand, on the other side the New site was prepared to be developed. The building orientation possible from two different view. Which is through Colomadu’s building direction and the main street on the South. This concept could make the library feels like greeting everyone to visit from two angle. 9

VOLUMETRIC STUDIES MASS CONCEPT

The shape of masses is meant to be philosophy of Colomadu which has definition of sugar’s mountain. But the differences between old and Colomadu concentration’s nowadays is, if on the past Colomadu spread the sweetness of sugar, then now would spread the sweetness of knowledge through library function.

This building consists of two masses that correlated each other. Represent the hybrid old-new. The small one means old period. While the big one means new period. It is reflected that we must be never forget the history [old period] to face the biggest moment which was await tomorrow [new period]. This two-aspect directed to be together.

While exploring some typical form, I found three shapes that might be possible for my consideration. At the end, I prefer to develop the third one. Because it is more balance than the other, specifically for the proportion related to structure beforehand. Yet the shape also reflected dynamic movement in a such contemporary way.

11

STRUCTURE This library included category of wide span building with use the structure of space frame double layer. So, it brings the possibility to make the arc shape, especially for the roof.

The facade on the secondary layer of this building consists of triangle pattern representing the mountain shape. Showed that every big thing is composed by small component. This metaphor reflected to the achievement of Colomadu’s successful, which without the hard work of the land people there will be no glory of industrial revolution above Mangkunegaran IV’s hands. 16

The Historical Land: Rural Tourism of Mojogedang 2019 | Project Design Studio 6 Supervisor: Wisnu Setiawan, S.T., M.Arch., Ph. D

This project was aimed to extend the 6th semester student ability on criticize about rural development specifically for tourism area. As a result, each student must decide which site that might be potential for the village, also the function and connectivity towards buildings. Hence, I have to make the complexity works into a contextual harmony.

18

Mojogedang is a rural area in Karanganyar besides Surakarta, Central Java. Mojogedang consists of two Java words: Mojo which means purpose and Pepadang refers to guidance. The origin of these name based on Raden Mas Said experience that get a visualization of his ambition on this land to become a pioneer of Mangkunegara Palace of Surakarta.

19

MACRO ANALYSIS Area|53.31 km2 approach, I From the zoning of macro site analytical made an integrated pattern which consist of 3 circle areas. Furthermore, I decide to devote on the centre, number 3 and 4. Because that area owned some potential value which have not been recovered yet.

Potential Existing [1] The site of wellspring located across the Petilasan presumed have a historical background that have not discovered yet. [2] Petilasan Raden Mas Said was a meditation place of Mangkunegara 1 which nowadays this site become a sacred heritage for annual cultural event.

[3] The big rock structure was a floodgate that refers to colonialism evident. This floodgate used to irrigate the pineapples garden for fibre needs. Unfortunately, research or conservation effort never been touching this artefact beforehand.

[4] The left pineapples still grow up around the floodgate area. Meanwhile, the whole agriculture land of Mojogedang become rice fields since the colonialism was over. [5] Organic movement tagline for rice fields productivity appear in order to promote the rural tourism. 21

River Flow Recreation and irrigation purpose along the village.

Rice Fields The occupation of community is farmer.

School and Mosque Children activity at school and mosque during afternoon.

Zoning Circle on the left refers to the historical area while the right circle is the natural potential. Hence, the selected site on the centre is the integration of both.

Settlement Community pattern right beside the rice fields zone.

Accessibility There is a pathway through the entire area.

Besides, the construction is aimed to provoke the children reading activity in an interactive way. Particularly, this atmosphere also can build up their conscious about the history of the land since early stage.

The Heritage Centre – Main Building Section A-A

This public building planned to be connected with community start from the scratch. The column and beam structure which are familiar for the villagers, could make them possible to participate on this project in an appropriate way. Hence, towards the community role since day one also could build up the sense of belonging of the building. Specifically of their own history which never been embraced. 25

Different form the studio design lecture before, on this last studio class I realized that architect must think in a holistic approach. Furthermore, the whole of contextual area which might have a valuable feature. The community, the culture, last but not least the history. This project was becoming my milestone to be confident on what should I do next. Regarding my hometown, Bangka Island for the Research Seminar and Final Design Studio. 28

Traditional Public Space: Literation and Playground on Cultural Land Kelekak Bangka 2020 | Final Design Project Supervisor: Dr. Rini Hidayati, S.T., M.T

It is such an honour for me to survive and trying to always put consistency regarding the architecture exploration towards time by time along my journey. I saw this point as a milestone to construct the concept which I have been consider since the day one involved in architecture academic. I try to learn about my hometown, Bangka Island in both active and passive ways in order to realize what the matters are. Specifically, for the rural development that reflected the potential of identity for instance the culture as well as the natural context. Here it is my story about Kelekak, the land that I wish never would be a history afterwards.

Animation Video of this Project

30

This project is located in a rural area named Balun Ijuk Village specifically, at Bangka Island. The pattern of traditional area in Bangka are consist of the settlement along the side of roads, the agriculture area such as palm oil plantation, monoculture section, as well the Kelekak, furthermore not far from the garden, we can see a natural pond. Those are part of the genius loci of Bangka Island. Kelekak is an agriculture of Bangka people through cultivate some variation of plants in a circle of site. Philosophy of Kelekak implied in the originally name that stand for “kelak kek ikak” means “later for you”.

Human

Nature

The main issues about this project are consist of two urgencies that lead to become a combination. First, the limitation of accessibility regarding education service for children on rural area. Second, the decreased of community consciousness related to the own culture which on this project refers to Kelekak as the philosophy of Bangka’s Malay people. The sense of feeling to be connected with nature as well for the next generations.

33

Called it Suku Lom, the earlier ethnic group on Bangka’s Island. They are really put-on respect to what we step on. Not as a land neither soil, but as a “mother”. The aim of this traditional public space is to give the reflection about:

The Growth

Where was our life from?

The Formation

Mother’s Womb

Soil

The Development

The country boy, and the seeds. They both are the same. Need a place for growing up and survive.

KELEKAK SITE CONTEXT The main potential point around this Kelekak site is the pond as a water source for the community nearby behind the site [9]. Every day the people there always involved with the access through road beside the kelekak for bathing or washing activities. Meanwhile, children there usually playing at the pond for spare time.

NOISES

NATURAL LIGHTING

The lower level of noise on this site is 16.2 dB which located at East side, as a result this section is appropriate to become the literacy function. Meanwhile the noisiest level of this land is 68.6 dB at the North side which right beside the pond for bath and wash activities of the villagers.

The lighting pattern is affected by the vegetation. This section divided into conducive area which is the lightest part for literation function, medium-conducive for playground and nonconducive area focused with observation purpose.

DRAINAGE

VEGETATION Building masses will be located on the low vegetation area. On the other side, the buildings are integrated as possible with the plants nearby. SITE ORIENTATION

Topography of the site influenced the water flow in natural cycle. From the West water go through the trees and down until reach the lowest point to the pond area.

The main circulation for this Kelekak site is still followed the existing pathway. Improvement on buildings orientation were the big deal, since the direction of way cannot be changed. The point of this concept is in order to maintain the natural movement, so the site function development will not be interrupting the preservation of Kelekak. 37

The zoning ideas of this site plan are inspired from the pattern of interior Bangka’s traditional houses as well the traditional settlement which have similarity regarding the four elements. This approach was the implication of my Seminar Research’s data beforehand. 38

DESIGN TRANSFORMATION

The design concept for the main building which has literacy function is inspired by traditional house of Suku Lom, the earlier ethnic group of Malay’s Bangka. Form philosophy of the house reflected a dynamic movement of the ancestors who preferred live overseas. The slanted walls had reminded them about that experience on a sailing boat, physically. Besides, the walls also could give a more place to storage the book through the interior. On top of that, the other thing about this traditional house was about the stilts structure. So, these reasonable concepts lead me to being still keep in mind regarding the local values.

ORNAMENTATION

The shape above is an icon of Bangka’s culture known as “tudung saji” or movable food cover which is present on every house become a common kitchen set. Meanwhile, this object also gives the representation of community kinship and protection. Then, this is the reason behind the three colours as well the shape of circle and triangle are implemented on the site symbolically.

43

The Characters on Façade The features which become part of the façade are inspired from the shade of traditional fabrics in Bangka named “Kain Cual”. Every chapter represented the variations of flora and fauna which have different meaning. In this design, I choose four features to be developed adjusting with the context.

Facade Bunga Cempaka Symbol of flora means responsibility, leadership, and protector.

Kembang Gajah Symbol of flora means the process to achieve a successful like a growth of vines.

Bebek [duck] Symbol of fauna means togetherness in daily around community’s life.

Garuda Symbol of fauna means a strong individual and brave to tell the truth. Representing the character of Depati Bahrin as a national hero from Bangka.

Mock-up

The following photograph of mock-up was taken from the part of some Project Design Studio contents. When it comes to mock-up, details matter as well as the manual technique regarding the dimension. I used to deepen my sense of feel through exploring the detail of model’s material. It is satisfied to find some strange components yet fortunately ended up being pretty match for a detail. Feels like I already just invite a hide potential character to bring the new authentication.

There is a similarity between people and buildings. Have their own story. Through it all, we know how to play the role. Yet if without, we lost the identity. In my eyes, architecture is the way how to be a self-based on the true story. There will be no history with no story and vice versa.
