How would you describe your personal fashion style?

I would say that my personal design style is defined as classic , Scandanavian minimalist. Mostly neutral colors ; greys, beiges, ivory and “A LOT” of black because it calms me when I am creating and painting . I accessorize very sparingly and love pieces that are no-stress /go to pieces that are comfortable and appropriate in any setting and time of day.

What are your favorite core clothing pieces in your wardrobe?

I have a vila jumpsuit that is my go- to outfit and goes to any occasion. I wear it and don’t stress about it .Other style signatures are leggings , faux fur jackets and flats such as riding boots . “I just brought back a pair of Reiker riding boots from home “ When did you decide to launch your own clothing line ?

After a few years of styling photoshoots with my clothes, I decided to take a step forward and start my own brand, CHAINE. I presented my first runway collection in November of 2015.

Tell me about your paintng and artwork

On a grey November day in Minneapolis, I meet with Emmi Kainulainen, a model, artist and design entrepreneur and most recently, a part time resident of Minneapolis. We catch her for a quick cup of warmth as she wraps up a project with fashion photographer Miles Schuster a few steps away at a studio loft. While settling in at Spyhouse coffee shop in the trendy North Loop neighborhood, Emmi jokes that the overcast dim is a reminder of home in Hollola, Finland.

Of course her stunning beauty is hard to miss, but what impresses me most is the passion to create that Emmi radiates as she speaks of modeling designing and painting .

Tell me how you began your modeling career?

When I was 18, I applied to model in a European Specsavers Wearer of the Year eyeglasses competition, and that was the first thing that I did for modeling. I was accepted and then I won the competition In Finland and was sent to London for the finals. From there , I began modeling back in Finland and Europe for many brands .”

When did you begin designing clothes?

After modeling for a few years, I wanted to start styling photoshoots and then with my friend Tania Muhonen, a photographer, we began producing our own test shoots together and I couldn’t find the clothes that I liked enough for the shoot , so I began making them and so I would have these fabrics with me at the photoshoot and I would cut it while on the model and hand sew the garments.

I began painting with my grandmother at a young age in Finland . It is something I have always done since childhood. I mostly paint abstract pieces and find it so rewarding , even mentally it’s a way of relaxing and escaping into your own world. I like bringing beauty and balance into peoples’ lives with my art pieces---many of my clients have said that my pieces have a calming effect on their hectic lives What’s coming up for you in the next 12 months ?

I will finish a four year degree in interior architecture and design from the Metropolia UAS in Finland, and will graduate in the Spring. For now I’m focusing on building CHAÎNE, my luxury lifestyle brand, which is a curated collection of original paintings, unique dresses and art accessories and is now available on my website available for purchasing on chaine.co.

The artist and gallery owner Lindsay Rapp discussed her life’s journey and her art

I have always been drawn to the sea. The expressive nature of water is very human. The way it fluctuates and flows, I see emotional energy. Paint's fluidity is like water. I channel my feelings into each gestural brushstroke. I connect all my drawings and paintings to that philosophy of emotionally expressive, fluid paint application.

I'm inspired by the ocean's light and spectrum of palette, color, value and temperature, and how they can range from subtle to extreme. The light that illuminates water ignites my inspiration; the shimmer that catches my eye; the dancing that trances my attention. Precious materials such as mother of pearl, abalone, gold and metallics are used in my artwork to highlight the effects of the water's mysterious refractive nature. Using translucent materials such as plexiglass, light is able to pass through the paint just like how it passes through water. Light, material and space become as much a part of my painting as does the colorful paint itself.

In my work I strive to create an emotional connection or escape. My paintings are like windows to magical places, special moments, and feelings or thoughts that transcend

day-to-day life. Art is something I feel is greater than me; it's something timeless and emotional. If I move one person with my art, that’s all I need to make my effort, love & sacrifice worthwhile I grew up in sunny Florida around Clearwater Beach, and moved to Philadelphia, PA for my college education. I received dual degrees, one from The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the other from the University of Pennsylvania.

Philadelphia is now my home where I direct an art gallery, paint daily in my studio, and sell and exhibit my artwork.

I’ve always loved art and played with crayolas like every little kid, but unlike others just kept on going and never stopped. At the age of four, my preschool teacher was the first to recognize my artistic ability. She entered a little crayon drawing into my first regional contest, and the next thing I knew, I found myself on TV receiving my first award.

When my father realized my love for art, he studied every drawing book he could to help nurture my skill. By age 11, my desire to learn grew beyond our collection of books.

That was when my private painting tutor Carolann Mancuso entered my life. Practically every day, I would rush

out from school to Mrs Mancuso’s art studio to learn more about painting. She mentored my artistic career from middle school through high school. I am so thankful for how supportive my family has been throughout my life about my dreams, goals and passion for art.

The University of Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts were both amazing colleges to experience.

Hand in hand they stretched my mind, imagination, and curiosity in ways I never even knew were possible. They challenged and grew my core foundations of art, thought, work ethic and spirituality. They better equipped me with the grit necessary to achieve my artistic dreams.

These days I often travel home to Florida and to California as well. I opened Lindsay Rapp Gallery here in Philadel-

phia in July of 2015. I paint daily in my attached artist studio space, meet wonderful people who pass through the gallery, and sell original paintings, prints and commissioned pieces both online and in the gallery..

Marie Conigliaro’s juxtaposition of images is a direct expression of the duality often experienced in day-today life. A vital part of the human condition is the feeling of existing within multiple realities, with the capacity to encounter seemingly contradictory emotions, ideas or attitudes simultaneously. Such is the draw of surrealism, and artists such as Hieronymus Bosch or Pieter Bruegel, as they offer imagery and fantasy of an antiqued, dreamlike quality that left a definite impression on a young Marie.

For her, collage is a depiction of the fragmented nature of the world we live in, but also of its togetherness. Different and disjointed elements of this world and beyond can be brought together as one through this medium.

Rexasaurus

Conigliaro rarely sets out to produce specific artwork, though thematic threads inevitably emerge.

Space and nature themes provide a natural, organic familiarity, while vintage materials spawn pieces of art with an aged look and feel; again, reclaiming something old and evolving it into something simplified and modern (yet another expression of duality and the transformation from one state to another). Relying mainly on intuition, Marie assimilates various elements to create an image that resonates with her in the moment. Often the results are simple and quirky, but sometimes they contain a more sober, philosophical undertone.

Either way, the work is complete when a strong connection is made with the image created.

Inspired by an experience in Africa, I wanted to create a product that give backs by helping children in poverty

Briya was born after I returned from a six-month stay in the Democratic Republic of Congo. I was working on a primate sanctuary and assisting with Jane Goodall’s conversation education program, Roots and Shoots. The region I was living in is considered one of the poorest in the world and day-to-day life for those children I came to know was truly heartbreaking, especially for the girls. They had absolutely no resources, no paper, no books, nothing to draw a picture or practice penmanship with – nothing. We held classes in an outside structure with only a broken chalkboard and no chalk. Yet, the kids still showed up, every week, eager to learn, to sing, to create. When I saw them

walking around the village, the first thing they would ask for was a pen or a pencil, even though I knew their bellies were empty and they did not have a penny to their name; they were hungrier for knowledge. It truly changed me.

When I got back to the states, I immediately noticed how many pencils and pens I saw stuffed in drawers, unused, or discarded on the streets, in perfect condition. We have so many resources at our disposal; we don’t even think twice about “disposing” of something that would be an invaluable treasure to a child living in extreme poverty. It literally kept me up at night. How could I help?

And how could I inspire others to help?

I have always loved fashion as a way to express myself, my personality, to tell my story. But I have never been a “labels� person. In fact, I have always avoided lines that had the logo or brand blatantly displayed. The exception is when I find a brand that is giving back. (Yes, Toms are a staple in my closet.) I am proud to show that I am shopping with intention, thinking globally and choosing products that are improving the lives of others. In fact, I was staring down at my Toms the moment that Briya was born. What if I could create something that would allow others to make a difference for these children by just doing what they would do regardless? People shop, people want to make a difference, and who doesn’t need a cool bag that is functional and changing lives at the same time?

Each Briya bag purchased will help provide school supplies and essential resources to children and employment opportunities for women living in povertystricken regions across the globe.

The Nomad I decided to focus on purses and bags because I am a traveler and am forever looking for the perfect travel bag. It needs to be durable and functional, but not look like I got it at the airport. I think we nailed it with the Nomad. I love this bag. I can take a serious beating and still looks great. The outside pockets are perfect for easy access to your phone and the strap/closure forces me to actually close my bag (I am famous for leaving all things hanging open, with a trail of my valuables behind me).

The Walkabout My vision for Briya is to have women making the bags in the communities that we are supporting. Building up the capacity for this and supplying the necessary resources, however, has proven to be very challenging. This was the inspiration for the Walkabout. I tried to develop a style that could be made out of easily accessible materials and sewn by hand or on a basic machine. One of my partner organizations, Grass Roots Global, helped me find a group of women in Mexico who do amazing work and they are now making our bags.

They are also being made locally by the Mile High Workshop, an organization that hires individuals who have obstacles to employment.
