Ponderosa Properties, LLC Deep roots — and a towering presence in the Sisters community. Ponderosa Properties is the locals’ choice for real estate sales and property management in the Sisters/Black Butte Ranch/Camp Sherman areas. The Dyer family’s real estate experience began in the mid-1970s with Rad Dyer marketing cabins and lots at the Ranch for developer Brooks Resources. Rad, Kevin and Laurence moved into Sisters real estate sales in 1980, and have been actively helping clients ever since. Founded in 1991 by the Dyer family, Ponderosa Properties quickly and quietly became the most respected brokerage in town.
Their reputation is steeped in honesty and integrity, combining local knowledge and experience with strong ethics and continuing education within the industry. This keeps Ponderosa Properties on the forefront of representation for clients — both buyers and sellers. Through the years, the Dyers have been joined by other leading brokers and long-time residents. They, too, share the strong beliefs of the Golden Rule and stability, thereby deepening Ponderosa Properties’ roots and ties to the community. With over 200 years’ combined experience, it is no wonder Ponderosa Properties is the locals’ choice for real estate experience. www.discoversisters.com |

LIVING Sisters Style Sisters is still a small town — but we are never far away from services that make our quality of life as good as it is anywhere. Many of us came here to put our children through quality schools that genuinely care about preparing them for the future. From highly-regarded public schools to an accredited private school, Sisters offers options for families whose top priority is their children’s education. Sisters is a healthy environment, and has become a real center for quality health and wellness
services that not only make us feel good but actually profoundly enhance our quality of life. When you need good health care, you don’t have to go far to find it — from friends and neighbors for whom you are more than just a number. All the everyday needs from car repair to home improvement are met by local folks who live here for the same reasons we do, who want to help their neighbors and who stand behind their product and their work because this is their town and they really care.

Aqua Hot Tubs Aqua Hot Tubs has been in the business of helping people enhance their life with spas for 13 years. A spa is much more than a luxury item. Aqua Hot Tubs owner Brian Janke and his wife, Carolyn, know that well. Who buys a spa? The hardworking people who need to come home and unwind from the stresses of earning a living. Then there’s the family that wants to spend time connecting with each other, off their screens and enjoying each other’s company. The space and time for that interaction is harder and harder to come by in a hectic, over-connected world — and the spa makes the perfect place to retreat for a time and reconnect with those who matter most to you. “It’s the new dinner table,” Janke says. And there are those who need a spa to help them heal and relieve the aches and pains of living. Modern spas are designed to target specific areas of the
body — neck, shoulders, feet — with jets that apply just the right kind of soothing and therapeutic action. Time in the spa can be a tremendous asset in improving and maintaining health and quality of life. Brian Janke knows spas literally inside and out. He started as a service tech, and he knows that quality, durability, and value are on the inside. And that’s what the products he represents at Aqua Hot Tubs offer clients — top quality at prices that are better than what you’ll find in Bend. They also offer saunas — both traditional and infrared — at surprisingly affordable prices. A sauna, like a hot tub, is more than a luxury: It’s a way to enhance your well-being. Brian and Carolyn Janke have created an oasis of health and well-being at Aqua Hot Tubs — and they have made a long-term commitment to be here to serve the Sisters community. www.discoversisters.com |

Sisters Christian Academy Sisters Christian Academy — educating your children in life, in faith, and in community. Sisters Christian Academy is committed to providing education, support, and opportunities for service that help our students become culturally aware, understand and experience cross-cultural perspectives, and develop servants’ hearts. These opportunities help them develop as people of deep character who have experienced the joy of giving to others. Sisters Christian Academy is an accredited school, with teachers who are both certified and experienced. They are able to offer a much smaller teacher-tostudent ratio than many area schools. Many students are able to benefit from these small classes and the individualized attention they are able to receive. Students who struggle academically and socially are able to thrive in this environment.
At the same time, students who are exceptionally gifted benefit from the individualized academic options offered there. Almost every year, one or more of the local high school valedictorians are SCA graduates. Sisters Christian Academy is a choice for local families whose children need another option for getting an excellent education. Whether it’s the experience of bullying in another school, conflicting values, or large class sizes, local families and school professionals appreciate the choice and opportunity this non-denominational school provides. As one SCA mom described it, “My child was struggling to learn to read. He was two years behind academically. The teachers and staff at SCA were able to discover his problem, provide great support and intervention for him, and he’s now reading a bit above his grade level. I’m so grateful for their skill and loving commitment to our children.” www.discoversisters.com |

Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show
The Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show is always held the second Saturday in July. Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show (SOQS) is internationally recognized as the world’s largest outdoor quilt show and quilt sale, displaying more than 1,200 quilts representing fiber artists from around the world. Annually 10,000 visitors from all 50 states and 23 foreign countries flock to Sisters for the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show. The art and tradition of quilting represents the longest unbroken chain of creative expression in America. An estimated 20 million quiltmakers live in the U.S. today, predominately women. Volunteers help with many tasks including hanging hundreds of quilts displayed in exhibits throughout Sisters. Quilt exhibitors range in age from 10 to 92 years old and come from all over the world.
You can join with locals to experience firsthand this phenomenal history: • Register your quilt to hang in this historic event • Sign up to take a class during the week preceding at QuiltersAffair.net • Come early and volunteer the week before or just on the day of SOQS. You, too, can help us to hang some 1,200 quilts or take them down and prepare to return them to their owners. Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to educate the public about the art, skill, and heritage of traditional and contemporary quilts and fiber arts, while enhancing the cultural vitality of the community of Sisters and Central Oregon. Many of the quilts on display can be purchased, with a portion of the proceeds supporting SOQS which produces the annual, free, quilt show. www.discoversisters.com |

Three Creeks Brewing Co. Over the past decade, Three Creeks Brewing Co. has become a significant player in one of Oregon’s signature industries, creating award-winning craft beers. Three Creeks Brewing Co. beers and ales have placed in the Great American Beer Festival and the World Beer Cup, which are two of the most prestigious beer awards in the world. They have also become an integral part of the Sisters community. Locals and visitors alike gather at the pub at FivePine, enjoying a full menu of items ranging from Angus burgers to pizza to fish tacos and more. The pub features an on-site 10bbl system. Their brewing facility production facility, which houses a 30bbl system, has also become a community hub. Their tasting room
at that location is open Fridays and Saturdays throughout summer from 3 to 7 p.m., and they recently installed an expansive lawn where they can host fun outdoor community events, including the annual Sisters Fresh Hop Festival. Three Creeks Brewing Co. was one of the state winners for the 2018 Restaurant Neighbor Awards. They were awarded this because of their work with Sisters Fresh Hop Festival — raising over $10,000 for the American Cancer Society last year. Three Creeks Brewing Co. also teamed up with the local Sisters charity Warfighter Outfitters, creating Warfighter Pale Ale to help raise money for disabled veterans. What started as a dream over a decade ago has become a thriving business with a long reach — and a hometown Sisters feel. www.discoversisters.com |

SHOPPING Sisters’ Homegrown Businesses “Shop Local” is a common slogan. Here in Sisters, it has real meaning. We have reasons to stay close to home! Sisters is home to an extraordinary cadre of worldclass artists, and their work is represented in local galleries — often run by people who are artists themselves, making a tour of local galleries a treat you can’t find just anywhere. That kind of unique experience is also available at local retailers,
our friends and neighbors whose businesses are a labor of love. We know we can stay local for gear for our outdoor adventures, and when it’s time for a project, our local shops have the tools and the materials — and the expertise — to get the job done right. “If we don’t have it, we can get it” is a motto at many Sisters establishments, and prices are right in line with places down the road in the big town.

fun – to have a little store.’ So we GIFT BIE bought it.” S F OR B A Jerry soon discovered that having her own business was a lot of fun — and a lot of work. The store grew, taking over adjacent spaces (“We just outgrew our pants,” Jerry said.) The past 30 years have seen many changes in Sisters, many of which have made it a more favorable climate for local businesses. “I think it’s more of a destination for people than it used to be,” says Petersen. “I think people used to stop on their way through to somewhere else — and now people come to Sisters.” Visitors and locals alike have come to rely on The Paper Place for the perfect card and for the right gift at the right price. It’s a decades-old legacy that shows no signs of slowing down.

For more than three decades, The Paper Place has been one of those destination stores in Sisters — the kind of place folks make a point of visiting each time they come to town. “There are people who come over three times a year and they stop and load up on cards for the year. Others always bring their children in to choose that one special vacation gift when visiting Sisters,” says owner Kara Petersen. Over the years, The Paper Place has expanded off its base of greeting cards to include games, puzzles, children’s books, toys and unique gift items for adults — many of them under $20. Kara purchased the store from her parents in January of 2014 and feels she is carrying on the legacy and memory of her parents, Jerry and Bob Petersen. “One day there was a sign on the door of The Paper Place that said ‘For Sale,’” Jerry recalled several years ago. “And Bob and I said, ‘Wouldn’t that be

Alpaca Country Estates Alpaca Country Estates Ranch and Bed & Breakfast is a working alpaca ranch east of Sisters. What began in 2006 as a desire to have a few of these cuddly, inquisitive little animals has blossomed into a multi-faceted business supported by an alpaca herd now over 1,000 strong. The ranch offers breathtaking views of the Cascade mountains, and includes a bed and breakfast, fashion design company, artistry classroom, alpaca yoga classes, and a boutique store. In 2014, Alpaca Country Estates opened the doors to its on-site Terrebonne ranch boutique showcasing their luscious yarn, clothing, throws and rugs made from their magnificent fiber. They added a South American flare by carrying a vast amount of Peruvian fashion; including alpaca cowboy hats and fedoras, incredible alpaca socks, capes, stuffed animals, jewelry and trinkets. They offer felting classes to the community making scarves, purses, flowers, and even Western boots. Busy, tired, burned out? Alpaca Country Estates offers a unique way to relieve stress and anxiety — Alpaca Yoga. Join a one-hour yoga classes in a peaceful setting amongst friendly alpacas. They
also offer optional ranch tours, which include interacting with baby alpacas, visiting a nose kissing alpaca, and walking alpacas on a lead. The ranch is working toward being a green, self-sufficient entity by using alpaca compost as fertilizer to grow their own hay, raising laying hens, and managing a vegetable garden. Alpaca Country Estates is open to the public for tours or longer stays at the bed and breakfast. They welcome everyone to grab the family and camera and come out for an enjoyable, educational, hands-on, unforgettable experience in our 134-acre park-like setting ranch. The hundreds of babies will win your heart!

Finding Your HOME Most of us here in Sisters came from somewhere else, fell in love with the place, and decided to stay. When that happens — as it inevitably will — it’s good to be able to put our dreams of a home in Sisters in the hands of people who are committed to making them come true. Finding the perfect place is no simple matter. Do you want a place in town, or an outlying home on acreage? A place deep in the pines? A place out in the
sagebrush with spectacular mountain views? A home at Black Butte Ranch? What neighborhood is right for you? The right real estate professional can match your needs and desires with the right property. That takes knowledge, the ability to listen — and commitment. Sisters’ real estate professionals are in a class by themselves when it comes to their commitment to their community. Not only do they know Sisters inside and out — with inside knowledge they can pass on to clients — they

For Kizziar, service is success For Tim Kizziar, success in real estate and service to the community are the same thing. “What I genuinely enjoy most in this business is communicating with and serving people,” said the broker with Coldwell Banker Reed Bros. Realty. Tim has lived in Sisters for over 20 years. During that time he has been very active in the real estate market, buying, renovating, and selling a number of homes and properties. He has a proven track record of minimizing risk on the buying end of transactions and maximizing potential on the selling end. The hallmark of his work is that he genuinely cares about meeting people’s needs. For him, it’s not about simply making a sale, but about putting in the extra work to make the transaction a true success for everybody. Kizziar doesn’t have a narrow specialty — he seeks to be an “expert in Sisters” in all of its variety of properties. From a small home on a city lot to large acreage outside of town to luxury homes in a resort, Tim’s background, experience and
commitment to meeting the needs of his clients ensures that everyone he works with is well served. Among those properties, for which he is the exclusive representative, are six five-acre properties adjacent to the magnificent Faith Hope & Charity Vineyards located in a spectacular setting in the farmland northeast of Sisters. These properties will make an ideal vineyard estate for owners interested in private ownership that is connected to Faith Hope & Charity by proximity and amenities. Those amenities include access to all events in the Faith Hope & Charity tasting room, member exclusive dinners and more. Faith Hope & Charity offers planting, tending, and harvesting services for grapes grown on these properties, and there is an additional opportunity to establish an agritourism business on a 116-acre property in the same area. Tim has been married for over 20 years and has had four children in the Sisters School District. His family is an integral part of the Sisters community — one he enjoys sharing with others. www.discoversisters.com |

Ross Kennedy knows Sisters Ross Kennedy’s Sisters Country connections run deep — and inform everything he does. Born and raised in Central Oregon, he’s been married for the past 15 years to the renowned fabric designer, quilt artist, and owner of the Stitchin’ Post, Valori Wells. The couple has three children — Olivia, Violet, and Teague — all of whom attend school in the Sisters School District. Ross has volunteered on campaigns to support the schools through passage of construction bonds and a local option levy; has served as an assistant coach in track and field and basketball, and volunteers each year with the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show. Fortunately, we have many lodging establishments that we can send them to with the heartiest recommendation. In fact, these places are so appealing that locals are known to book a room for a staycation. There’s no higher recommendation than that. FivePine Lodge & Shibui Spa The inspiration came from Rancho la Puerta, a resort spa in Tecate, Mexico. Bill and Zoe Willitts thought they could create something special on a 15acre property at the east end of Sisters that would emulate the qualities of that legendary retreat. That concept became a reality called FivePine — a campus centered around Shibui Spa and FivePine Lodge. The dream evolved slowly. Zoe started her massage business in a garage on the property before Shibui Spa was built. “I feel like it’s the soul of the property,” Zoe said of Shibui. Shibui Spa offers the perfect balance between luxury and wellness, offering massage, Ayurvedic treatments, and an annual retreat that helps people refocus on their own well-being. FivePine Lodge offers the same kind of centering experience. Lodging on the campus is in 36 cabins created with serenity and reconnection in mind. And there is the lodge itself. The lodging
concept originated in a post-college hiking excursion by Bill and his son Greg in the Swiss Alps. They appreciated the communal space and the human connection at the center of that European lodging tradition. People talk to each other, share experiences and tips on where to hike or ride. And this retreat happens to be just a quarter-mile jaunt by vehicle, or on foot or bicycle from all that Sisters has to offer — art galleries, restaurants, shopping and entertainment events. With a friendly staff who are truly committed to taking care of people, FivePine has become an annual destination for many, many people. A lot of those folks have family here. “We see locals’ family members every year,” says Greg Willitts, who operates FivePine. The FivePine campus also features Sisters Athletic Club, Sisters Movie House, Three Creeks Brewing Co. and a suite of professional offices. www.discoversisters.com |

As the owners of Metolius River Lodges for 18 years and Cascade Vacation Rentals for 12 years, we are honored to be able to give back to the community we love. Our 13 sparking-clean riverfront lodges (built between 1945 and 1960) have unique “personalities” and can be your reconnection with a simpler time ... a time when the only sound you hear might be the Metolius River’s musical rippling or the breeze sighing high in the ponderosas. Some history: In 1919 Owen Thompson built several houses on the east side of the Metolius. He built three cabins, a house, and a log cabin (Dragonfly). Dragonfly became a stable for the work ponies, Trixie and Dixie. When the foundation was replaced, pony horseshoes were found in the concrete. The cabins became a motel (Coachman, Stonefly, Mayfly and Caddis). Thompson sold, apparently to a Rogers family, then Lester Siegner bought it in 1961 and ran a cafe (Cranefly). Richard Ford bought it in 1967, and Byron Beach in 1984. John and Phyllis Rollins owned it for five years then sold to the Hornbecks in January 2001. Each cozy lodge is equipped with a kitchen and most have fireplaces. They have Wi-Fi and are open year-round. Metolius River Lodges financially supports Shepherd’s House Ministries who strive to feed the hungry and shelter the homeless, while walking along side the hurting and needy to address the issues that perpetuate the longterm cycles of pain and homelessness. In an environment of grace their goal is to see hearts healed and lives changed from the inside out. Ted and Lynn, our resourceful Cascade Vacation Rentals team, offer monthly and long-term vacation rentals in “Sisters Country” and beyond. To help make your Central Oregon dream more effortless they also provide a complete array of property management services. Cascade Vacation Rentals donates regularly to the National Forest Foundation who designated the “Tale of two rivers — Metolius and Whychus” in the Deschutes National Forest as one of their Treasured Landscapes conservation campaign sites. They joined a community-wide effort in Sisters to restore Whychus Creek and revitalize the Metolius River. “We are truly blessed to work with the public while being stewards of the land and the river.” Sincerely, The Hornbeck Family, John & Vickie And our dedicated “staff family,” Ted, Lynn, Sarah, Mike and Maria Escape
