For decades, the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show™ (SOQS) has splashed downtown Sisters in a riot of colored fabric, a display that draws fiber arts enthusiasts from around the world. The 2018 43rd Annual Quilt Show runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 14, all through downtown Sisters. The show itself is the culmination of a week of education and celebration. Quilters from all around the world come to Sisters for a week of classes taught by some of the most renowned instructors in the world of fiber arts. Special events and entertainment round out a slate of pre-show festivities, as quilters get to enjoy the beauty of Sisters Country at a leisurely pace before the big day. Quilt Show week officially kicks off on the first weekend in July with the annual Fiber Arts Stroll, noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 8. More than 20 fiber artists share their textile arts including quilts, weaving, basketry, fabric dying and much, much more. This is the most unique art stroll in Sisters — the artists are on hand showing you how it’s done and some may even have a project you can try yourself! Maps will also be available for pickup at the Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce, Stitchin’ Post, and at participating businesses. For many, one day of viewing hundreds of quilts just isn’t enough. On Sunday, July 15, visit the FivePine campus at the east end of town for an outdoor display and quilting lecture in Quilt Show Sunday. Love the show? Step up to volunteer at sistersoutdoorquiltshow.org.

10 Attend the Sisters Folk Festival Each September, downtown Sisters becomes a venue for some of the finest Americana roots music to be found. Sisters Folk Festival (SFF) will run September 7-9, 2018. From the Village Green Park to the back lawn of Sisters Art Works to restaurants and cafés all around town, the air is filled with music. The ability to stroll through town from venue to venue is part of the charm of the festival, which brings people from all over the world back to Sisters year after year. “The festival is unique in using venues all across town within walking distance,” says Sisters Folk Festival Executive Director Brad Tisdel. The setting allows audiences to have an intimate connection with outstanding musicians in genres ranging from blues to folk to Celtic to bluegrass and every shade in between. Some of it’s quiet and reflective and touches the soul; some of it’s raucous and demands that you get up and dance. “It makes for a unique and totally rewarding experience,” Tisdel says. Whether you come to dance or to listen — or for a mix of both, the SFF will give you plenty to enjoy. “We love introducing artists to our audience,” says SFF co-founder Jim Cornelius. “You may not have heard of a band or a songwriter, but once you’ve seen them, you’re hooked for life.” SFF artists may fly below the mainstream radar, but they are the real deal — talented, compelling, and accessible. “The talent level is extraordinary,” says Tisdel. The festival encourages emerging talent with the Americana Song Academy held at nearby Blue Lake during the days leading up to the festival. For ticket information visit sistersfolkfestival.org.

Fishing Deschutes River The Deschutes River is a nearly 200-mile-long tailwater originating from Wickiup Reservoir in the Cascade Lake basin, west of Bend. The river is divided into three sections: the upper, middle, and lower river. Although the upper and middle Deschutes can fish well, the lower river is the place to be. One hundred miles of river flow from Lake Billy Chinook, near the town of Madras, and wind through the desert landscape, ultimately ending the journey at the mighty Columbia River near Biggs Junction.

High Mountain Lakes Three Creek Lake southwest of Sisters and Lost Lake west of Sisters on the Santiam Pass are great spots once the ice comes off in April or May (or June). The fish feed like hungry bears. The high alpine climate produces some incredible late afternoon hatches and more fish boils than the angler can count.

Metolius River The Metolius River in Camp Sherman is fly-fishing-only water from the headwaters to Bridge 99 —about 12 miles. The fish are selective, and because of the clear water, fly selection, presentation, and very skinny leaders are crucial. In addition to the rainbow, the Metolius also holds large bull trout and mountain whitefish and brown trout.

Suttle Lake Suttle Lake has brown trout and Kokanee salmon to test your skills. The best bite is in the cool of spring, but you can fish through the summer. The lake is easy to access and there are many nice spots along the bank to relax and wet a line. Or you can fish from a boat. Either way, Suttle Lake is a great place to introduce kids to the art of fishing.

Cycling Whether you prefer fat tires or skinny — or a little of both — Sisters Country offers outstanding opportunities for two-wheeled recreation. Because of our abundant sunshine, and dry climate, it is often possible to ride year ‘round in Sisters. Local bikeshops rent a variety of bikes, including bikes that can be ridden in the snow. For mountain biking adventure, it’s hard to beat the Peterson Ridge Trail. Located just five blocks from the center of town, just across Whychus Creek on Elm Street, this gem of a trail system is 30 miles and growing, offering options for riders of all abilities. Flowing single track for beginner to advance riders, and some of the best views in Central Oregon are hallmarks of this uncrowded trail. Unlike many trails, you can bring your four-legged friend: dogs are allowed. Recommended parking is at Village Green Park, across from the Sisters Fire Hall on Elm Street, where you will find restrooms, showers, bike lockers (bring your lock) and water. The trailhead is five blocks away. Road cycling is outstanding. With two Oregon scenic bikeways and amazing low-traffic riding, all ages can choose from challenging climbs to flat and rolling farmland and rural backroads. Ride over world-famous McKenzie Pass on Highway 242 (subject to conditions), from Camp Sherman to international rock climbing destination Smith Rock or all compass points in between. Elite riders can climb to stunning Three Creek Lake on Forest Road 16 (Elm Street south out of Sisters). Guests at Black Butte Ranch enjoy a network of bike paths. Cycle shops offer maps with routes highlighted and tailored to your particular needs and interests. Maps are available online from the Sisters Trail Alliance at sisters trails.org or eurosports.us/local_rides.

Hiking Black Butte | 3.8 miles | Strenuous This is a hike that every visitor should make at least once. It affords spectacular views of the entire Sisters area. It’s a 3.8-mile hike to the lookout tower and back. However, most of the trail is on the south-facing slope and it gets hot in the summertime. Bring plenty of water. To get there, drive west on Highway 20 from Sisters to Forest Road 11 (Green Ridge Road). Turn right and pass Indian Ford Campground. Turn left at graveled Road 1110 and follow it to the trailhead. If you’re feeling really ambitious, there’s a new trail from the bottom of Black Butte to the top. Maps for that are available at the Sisters Ranger Station. McKenzie River Waterfalls Loop | 3 miles | Easy If you’re looking for a family hike in magnificent forests, with views of spectacular waterfalls, the McKenzie River Waterfalls Loop Trail will fill the bill in spades. Located just a half-hour drive west of Sisters, the trail offers views of Sahalie and Koosah Falls, amid towering fir trees. Sahalie Falls is 34 miles west of Sisters; take a left at the Santiam “Y,” then Highway 126 west toward Eugene. Metolius River | Mileage varies | Easy If you’re looking for an easy hike that still takes you into some of the region’s most beautiful country, visit the Metolius River in Camp Sherman. With trees clinging to mossy rocks along the riverbank, the Metolius River trail has the feel of the real Pacific Northwest. To get there, take Highway 20 west to the Camp Sherman turnoff. Follow Road 14 to a fork in the road and bear right. Continue on approximately 7.5 miles and turn left at the Wizard Falls Fish Hatchery signs and cross the bridge to the fish hatchery parking area.

Suttle Lake Trail | 3.2 miles | Easy Suttle Lake offers an easy family hike around one of Sisters Country’s favorite recreation sites. Starting on the north shore of the lake, the 3.2-mile trail skirts the waters as it winds through the forest. There are many nice spots to stop for a picnic or a bit of fishing. To get there take Highway 20 west from Sisters about 14 miles to the entrance of the Suttle Lake campgrounds. The trail is easily accessed from several points, including Cinder Beach near The Suttle Lodge. Tam McArthur Rim | 5.5 miles | Strenuous If you’re looking for a bit of a challenge with the reward of some spectacular alpine views, hike the Tam McArthur Rim (tops out at about 8,000 feet). The 5.5-mile out-and-back hike offers stunning views of Three Creek Lake and the surrounding Cascades. It’s a strenuous hike with 2,400 feet of elevation gain, but it’s readily manageable for a fit hiker, and the views of the Sisters peaks, Broken Top, and the surrounding country are worth every drop of sweat. Take Elm Street (Road 16), south from Sisters about 16 miles to Three Creek Lake, where you’ll find the Tam McArthur Rim Trailhead (Wilderness Pass required). Whychus Creek Trail | 4 miles | Moderate This close-in hike offers the feel of being away from it all, walking along the rushing waters of Whychus Creek. It’s an out-and-back hike, so you can set your own distance. There are a couple of steep and rocky spots, but a reasonably fit hiker should be able to handle the trail with no problem. There’s a log jam about two miles in that makes for some spectacular photographs, so figure on at least a 4-mile round trip. Take Elm Street south out of Sisters 4.2 miles. There’s a turnout on the west (right) side of the road. Park and walk past the green gate down to the trail and start hiking upstream.

The stunning natural environment of The Ranch make this a special place to test your skills. The course is also home to Robert’s Pub, named for legendary course designer Robert Muir Graves. Black Butte Ranch Glaze Meadow | 18 holes | Par 72 For years, thousands of golfers have considered the Glaze Meadow Course to be the most iconic course in Central Oregon. When the course reopened in 2012 after an extensive $3.75 million renovation by architect John Fought, golfers were treated to an experience unlike anything else in Central Oregon. Featuring slightly elevated greens, square tee boxes and deep grass-faced bunkers, the new Glaze Meadow reflects the spirit of classic golf course design in a mountain setting. Winter Trails The snow is falling. Time to curl up in a chair by the fire with a good book. Or not. Sisters Country offers just as much backcountry adventure in the winter as it does in the summertime — and there may be no better way to truly experience the wonders of our forests and mountains than on a pair of Nordic skis or snowshoes. You don’t have to be a hard-core adventurer to do it, either. When the snow falls deep, you can rent skis or snowshoes at Eurosports and tour around on the streets and in the woods right around town. Guests at Black Butte Ranch can enjoy cross-country skiing and snowshoeing around the Big Meadow or Glaze Meadow golf course, on groomed trails with at least six inches of snow. The Ranch’s 17 miles of paved trails are another option. Cross-country ski and snowshoe rentals are available at the Glaze Meadow Rental Shop. Hoodoo offers 15.8 kilometers of groomed trails. The Nordic center has rental gear for conventional skiing and skating. Mt. Bachelor has 56 kilometers of Nordic skiing. About one mile from Hoodoo, Ray Benson Sno-Park offers a variety of trails for winter sports. Dog teams, skiers, snowmobilers, snowshoers and skijorers all enjoy this popular winter sno-park. A large shelter in the parking area has a wood-burning stove and the Forest Service stocks plenty of wood for winter visitors. Parks require sno-park permits (daily or seasonal), available at Hoodoo, Black Butte Ranch, Sisters Ace Hardware and Eurosports in Sisters. The North Loop Trail covers four miles through scenic forest. The South Loop Trail out of Benson Sno-Park leads to Brandenburg shelter and a six-mile scenic snowshoe or Continued on page 63

cross-country trek. Those who are more adventurous, might want to head up Forest Service Road 16 (south on Elm Street, straight out of Sisters) and take advantage of the backcountry skiing in the area of Three Creek Lake. You can make easy loops of three miles or make more strenuous treks of 12 miles or so on a network of trails. Maps are available at the Sisters Ranger Station. Upper Three Creek Sno-Park features a nice warming hut. Road 16 is not plowed on a regular basis and at times access is limited to the Lower Three Creek Sno-Park. Portions of the road are steep, narrow, and may require tire chains or traction devices. When snow conditions prohibit road access to the Upper Three Creek Sno-Park, use the Lower Three Creek SnoPark that is on the east side of Forest Road 16, 9.5 miles south of Sisters. To access the trailheads ski up Road 16 for two miles to the green gate. A sno-park permit is required. Be sure to dress and prepare appropriately for any venture into the winter woods — no matter how short you intend it to be. Dress warmly and in layers so you can peel off and pile on as exertion and weather conditions require. Avoid cotton fabrics. Carry a map, compass, the means of starting an emergency warming fire, and a cell phone (but don’t count on access). Be prepared for emergencies and make sure you let someone know where you’re going and when you expect to return. Let that big snowfall entice you out of doors and into the woods. Then you can come back to that fire and that book.
