Thanksgiving feast
set at church
Members of the Sisters community can come together for a free Thanksgiving feast from noon to 4 p.m. on Thursday, November 22. A cadre of community volunteers work each year to pull together the annual Sisters Community Thanksgiving Feast. The Sisters Community Church donates their location and the kitchen, and has for the last few years, for the groupʼs use. Local vendors have donated other items like food and linens. “All of the food this year has been completely donated,” said event coordinator Jennifer Seher. “I donʼt think we have had to buy a single thing. Itʼs been awesome.” Seher estimates that volunteers will prepare some 300 meals. All are welcome. Leftovers from the meal will be packaged up and taken to the Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire hall to feed the firefighters and paramedics who stay on duty to keep the community protected during the holiday.

Many Sisters businesses host gingerbread houses.
Follow the Sisters Habitat for Humanity Gingerbread Trail
The holiday elves are dressing up the town for the season, and many businesses will be participating in the 12th annual Sisters Habitat for Humanity Gingerbread Trail. Businesses will display a gingerbread house, and spectators can vote for their favorite by placing money in the Habitat donation box next to the creation. Everyone is encouraged to vote for more than one house. The creations will be on display beginning Friday, November 23, until Wednesday,
January 2, 2019. Maps of the gingerbread trail are located at the Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce, Sisters Habitat Thrift and ReStore as well as all participating businesses. The gingerbread creation that receives the highest dollar amount will win the Peopleʼs Choice Award. A best-in-show award will be decided by three independent judges. These will be announced in January. All proceeds benefit the building program of Sisters Habitat for Humanity.
Lasso a Cowboy Christmas When we imagine Christmas, we think of a small town decked in lights, neighbors gathering for caroling and fellowship — maybe a Christmas Parade. Thatʼs exactly what you get in Sisters, which has a long-standing tradition of creating a cozy, down-home holiday. Around here, they call it a Cowboy Christmas. To kick off the seasonʼs events, the Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce will host its yearly Christmas Tree Lighting on Friday, November 23. The tree-lighting event will be held at Fir Street Park on the corner of Main Avenue and Fir Street at 5:30 p.m. The annual Christmas Parade will be held on Saturday, November 24, at 2 p.m. on Hood Avenue.
The parade will begin at 2 p.m. and will have participants float, march, and sing their way down Hood Avenue for onlookers. This yearʼs parade theme is “Rockin Around the Christmas Tree.” “This is such a fun event, always exciting and festive,” said Jeri Buckmann, events director at the Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce. “Perfect weekend to start off the season.” Spectators can join Santa Claus himself afterward for refreshments and pictures at the Sisters chamber office (291 E, Main Ave.) after the parade. For more information or a complete Cowboy Christmas calendar of events email events@sisterscountry.com or call the chamber offices at 541-549-0251.

For 16 years, Ken Merrill has been at work in his pottery studio and adjoining gallery creating one-ofa-kind functional art. Come to Canyon Creek for beautiful, handmade… Mugs for your special cup of coffee. A pie plate for the baker in the house. A soup tureen. Candle-holders to spice up your holiday décor. Colorful rectangular platters for Santa’s cookies. Ken has been a potter since 1983 and opened his pottery studio in Sisters in 1998. He has won renown for his beautiful, functional handmade pottery. Each piece is handthrown on a potter’s wheel then fired in a kiln to 2,400 degrees where it becomes stoneware. All of Ken’s pottery is made of the finest clays available and makes a gift that gives each time it is used.

Community stepping up for Kiwanis food drive This is the season of giving, and the Sisters community is stepping up in a big way to make sure that everyone in the community is well-fed through this holiday season and on into winter. Food drives to support the Sisters Kiwanis Food Bank have been successful. The Nugget will continue its month-long campaign through Friday, November 23. Drop off food or cash donations at The Nugget Newspaper office, 442 E. Main Avenue. Tom Hespe of Sisters Kiwanis told The Nugget that Coldwell Banker Reed Bros. Realty, located at the corner of Cascade Avenue and Oak Street, will pick up the food drive through Christmas. “Thatʼll give us a Monday-Saturday dropoff for people,” Hespe said. The Food Bank, located at 328 W. Main Ave. in Sisters, is only open on Thursdays. They will be closed, however, on Thanksgiving Day, as they are each year. Essentials Skin Care & Spa is donating 10 percent of their proceeds for the month of November to the Kiwanis Food Bank. Sisters Vacation Rentals has started “Project Feed.” Renters of properties they manage are invited to leave any unused nonperishable food items in a bag provided to them, and Sisters Vacation Rentals will donate them to the
Kiwanis Food Bank. Washington Federal in Sisters has also agreed to be a drop-off point, Hespe said, and Aspen Lakes Golf Course is conducting a holiday food drive. The Food Bank provides a vital service to many families in Sisters — families who are struggling to get by in a high-cost town; families who need help getting through a crisis; families who donʼt have a home. The club annually conducts a Christmas Food Share program to ensure that everyone in Sisters has the opportunity for a festive holiday dinner. The generosity of the Sisters community is making up for a significant deficit in the Food Bankʼs coffers. The volunteers who operate the Food Bank reported in October that donations have declined year-over-year by 30 percent and some major cash donors have moved out of the area. Donations of cash money are especially useful, as they allow volunteers to be more flexible in obtaining the types of food required by Food Bank clientele. Donations may be mailed to P.O. Box 1296, Sisters, OR 97759. “Weʼve noticed a definite increase in those donations (after word got out of Kiwanisʼ need),” Hespe told The Nugget. “From our standpoint, itʼs been a huge success.”
Alpaca Country Estates
Alpaca Country Estates Ranch and Bed & Breakfast is a working alpaca ranch. Our herd, which began with the purchase of six lovable Huacaya alpacas in 2006, is now over 1,000 strong. The ranch offers breathtaking views of the Cascade mountains, and includes a bed and breakfast, fashion design company, artistry classroom, and boutique store. They have been rewarded with color champions and reserve champions in black, grey, brown, fawn, and white. From their magnificent alpaca fiber, they create luscious, soft yarn; woven garments/blankets; and alpaca fiber-filled quilts, bringing to you some of the finest products in the Northwest. Nancy and Art Izer would love for you to visit their picturesque ranch in Terrebonne, where they produce their own hay, strive for a green planet, design alpaca clothing/quilts, and have top-line alpacas of every color for you to choose from! They pride themselves on sharing their knowledge with new alpaca owners who want to get started in the business.

You can try both of these beers at the 2018 Rudolph’s Imperial Red Ale vertical tasting on Saturday, December 8, starting at 3 p.m. Call for reservations. Include the Dark Hollow Winter Warmer and the Tree Hunter Winter IPA in your seasonal beer musthaves. Furry Friends Foundation helps families over holidays Furry Friends Foundation put its paws to the pavement this past year and moved to a new location. With the sale of The Nugget, former publisher and founder of Furry Friends Foundation, Kiki Dolson, moved the nonprofit to the Sisters Art Works building in January of 2018. “WeĘźre happy to report a very successful year of helping families. However, because the need has been great, pet food and pet supply expenses have more than doubled combined with the added cost of rent this year, weĘźre in huge need of cash donations,â€? Dolson reported. Cash donations allow Furry Friends to target its purchases of food to meet individual petsĘź needs. Donations also support Furry Friends Foundation (FFF) in supplying spay/neuter and vaccination services, pet food and supplies to families and seniors in Sisters. Sometimes a pet owner only needs a few weeks of food to assure their pets can stay with the family. A 501(c)(3) nonprofit, FFF is there to help in the Sisters area. “WeĘźre also gearing up for the big holiday pet food distribution and Pet Photos With Santa fundraiser,â€? said Dolson. Pet Photos With Santa is slated for Saturday, December 1, at the annual Sisters Art Works open house. Kathy Deggendorfer will be selling her art-inspired merchandise, Black Butte School will be there selling their wreaths and the dessert plate fundraiser for Sisters Food Bank will be there, too. The open house is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Pet Photos With Santa will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Furry Friends partners with the Sisters Kiwanis and the Sisters-Camp Sherman RFPD for their annual Spirit of Giving drive. The fire department provides toys and gifts for children, Kiwanis provides gift cards for people food and Furry Friends distributes pet food, treats and supplies, all on one big distribution day just before Christmas. In 2017, Furry Friends provided pet food and treats to 131 families with a collective 346 pets. A video of lastĘźs year distribution can be seen online at www.youtube. com/watch?v=yTu9l-iHnEU “We are thankful to be receiving another large pet food donation from American Nutrition for the drive,â€? said Dolson. “So cash donations are very appreciated and

SPONSORED BY THREE SISTERS LIONS CLUB
As each year folds more quickly into the next, it is evident that my financial security has become tenuous with my retirement reserves gone. Whenever I find my anxiety ramping up, I turn my thoughts instead to acknowledging all the comfort and certainty in my life. Although I frequently weigh the pros and cons of selling my house and downsizing to smaller, less costly surroundings with less upkeep, I acknowledge I am fortunate to have a house to sell. Iʼm not living in my car, or being evicted from an apartment I can no longer afford. I have fairly decent health that allows me to continue to live independently. For when I need it, I have full Medicare and supplemental health insurance that allows me to seek appropriate and timely medical care. I have insurance that will pay for long-term care if the day comes when I need it. Friends and family care about me and provide love and human connections that we all need in our lives. I am not alone or lonely, not invisible like many elderly are. Though I am beyond the average retirement age, I am especially fortunate to have the ability and opportunity to engage in meaningful, rewarding work that provides needed income to supplement my monthly Social Security benefits. Living in a charming, nature-rich community that is physically untouched by so much of the horror filling todayʼs headlines and news broadcasts allows for a comfort and continuity that doesnʼt exist for millions of people around the globe. I am not homeless, sick, fearful, or living in poverty. I have much for which to be thankful – now, in the past, and in the coming days. It is incumbent upon me, with all the blessings I have received in my life, to extend a hand to those who have not enjoyed the good fortune I have. More than a duty, it is a joy to be able to bring a little light into anotherʼs darkness. Many of us are easily moved at holiday times to give money or material goods to help out our neighbors. Such gestures are appreciated by the agencies providing the help and those
receiving it; and I will participate again this year. But writing a check, dropping money in the red kettle, buying a toy for a child or a $20 sack of groceries, although greatly appreciated and needed, are temporary bandaids at holiday time that donʼt last. The most precious gift I can give is to share my time and talent all year round for the betterment of our world and our neighbors — whether here in Sisters or in a far-off place I will never see. The gift of my time doesnʼt require money — just a willing spirit and an open heart. A task that seems easy to me, like changing light bulbs and batteries for an elderly neighbor, or grocery shopping for him, makes a big difference in his daily life and helps him to remain in his home. There is overwhelming fear, hatred, bigotry and greed choking our world. Hearts and minds are closed, unwilling to see the needs of our brothers and sisters, whoever they may be. Guns, bombs, walls, and empty rhetoric will never bring lasting peace or equity. Fear breeds fear and hatred. Love trumps fear. I am only one person, and you are only one person. If I greet you in hope with love, and you do the same to another, and so on, we can make a difference. The best gift I can give this holiday season and all year long, is to not lose hope — to believe my attitude and actions can make a difference and you can make a difference. Despair is the enemy of hope. I will keep my candle of hope lit so that together we can provide light in those dark places. May the warmth and love of this season reside in our hearts and actions each and everyday. Blessings on us all.
Three Sisters Lions Club Holiday Faire
A hand-made gift can be the most thoughtful kind of gift you can give. The Three Sisters Lions Club Holiday Faire makes it easy to find one-of-a-kind hand-crafted gifts of exceptional quality. Centrally located at the corner of Hood Avenue and Elm Street, the holiday faire runs through December 16. From wonderful holiday décor items that will put your home or business in the Christmas spirit, to unique gifts that will be appreciated and handed down, you’ll find a host of treasures at this annual event. Metal sculpture is a big hit, as are clever “pocket purses,” handcrafted pottery, and blown glass — all kinds of unique gifts made by local artisans. And your gifts give in multiple ways. Of course they will delight the loved ones on your list. They’ll also support the thriving arts economy in Sisters, while supporting the vital outreach of the Three Sisters Lions Club.

It’s Christmas Tree cutting season Itʼs never too early to get into the Christmas spirit! Christmas tree permits can now be purchased or redeemed at Deschutes and Ochoco National Forest offices. Individual Christmas tree permits are $5 each and can be purchased or redeemed on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Deschutes or Ochoco Supervisor or District Offices and a number of Central Oregon retailers. Each household can purchase a maximum of five permits. For the fourth year in a row, Smokey Bear and Santa Claus are teaming up to bring some special holiday cheer to fourth-graders across the country. In order for students to receive a free tree permit, they must present a valid paper voucher printed from the Every Kid in a Park website. Step 1: Visit www.everykidinapark.gov and follow instructions to obtain the paper voucher. Step 2: Print out the paper voucher. Step 3: Bring the paper voucher to a National Forest office to claim the free permit. Additional information and a list of retailers can be found online at https://go.usa.gov/ xPGgd.

Be mindful of the season when youʼre out in the woods with the family. Weather conditions at higher elevations can be dramatically different from local conditions, and visitors should be prepared for cold and unpredictable weather. Additionally, most forest roads are not maintained for winter driving, so snow patches or debris may be encountered. Bring a hand saw or axe as well as winter clothing and safety equipment. Tire chains and a shovel are recommended, as is extra food, drinking water, blankets, a flashlight, first-aid kit and survival gear. Tree cutting and travel can take longer than anticipated, and individuals are encouraged to notify a friend or family member of the anticipated destination and to leave the woods well before dark. To keep a tree from drying out and becoming a fire hazard, leave it outside until youʼre ready to move it indoors. Cut the trunk at an angle before placing it in the stand and remember to refill the standʼs reservoir daily.
Whychus Cellars
It all began 23 years ago. While attending the University of Hawaii, winemaker Brent Renison learned many things, including how to make pineapple wine. Since then, he and his wife, Dechen Dawkins, began harvesting grapes from Stormy Morning Vineyards in the Willamette Valley to fuel their hobby. After the couple moved to Sisters, Whychus Cellars was established in 2016 and now produces a modest supply of pinot noir and white pinot noir; a locally crafted complement to your holiday dinners or simply a post-holiday restorative. The winery’s name was inspired by the rugged beauty of Whychus Creek and was chosen for a wine that invites conversation about the creek habitat restoration projects underway. Sisters-area delivery is available through their website, www.WhychusCellars.com.

On November 23, come watch Santa make his grand entrance into Bend when he flies into the Les Schwab Amphitheater in a helicopter at 10:15 a.m. Celebrate the start of Chanukah on December 2 with the lighting of a giant menorah. Stop by December 14 and take in an armada of illuminated kayaks and canoes during the annual Holiday Lights Paddle Parade. Snacking is as much a holiday tradition as turkey, tree lights, parties and shopping. Itʼs a great time to put the nutcracker to use. Dr. Earl L. Mindell, an internationally recognized expert on nutrition, vitamins and herbal remedies, says the holidays are prime time for people to gain an awareness of the health benefits of nuts. “Many of us love pecan pie, especially during the holidays,” says Mindell. “But eaten separately throughout the year, as is the case with almonds, chestnuts, walnuts and other tree nuts, theyʼll significantly change your diet for the better. The nutritional values and different ways nuts protect your health are worth changing your snack habits.” There are all kinds of ways to enjoy nuts — with a dazzling array of flavored nuts available at places like Sisters Olive & Nut Co. on Cascade Avenue. Oregon is actually a world leader in the production of the hazelnut — an extraordinarily versatile nut that goes well with and in all kinds of holiday treats. “Itʼs great to cook with,” said Rachel Henderson of Hazelnut Hill, an online purveyor of Oregon hazelnut products. “Theyʼre
nutritious; theyʼre good for you. Theyʼre actually really versatile.” Hazelnuts are used in candies and are tasty on their own when roasted, which brings out their flavor. “Hazelnut butter can be used like peanut butter,” Henderson noted. They can be used in sauces, and turned into flour. “A majority are exported to China,” Henderson said. The market is so extensive, she noted, that many grass-seed farmers are converting fields to grow hazelnuts. Hazelnut Hill specializes in creating hazelnut products for the domestic market — particularly the Oregon market. The Eugenebased retailer has been in business for over two decades, and is now under the ownership of Henderson and her husband Ryan. Ryan has run a successful farm for over 30 years, and Rachel is a passionate chocolatier. For more information, visit www. hazelnuthill.com.

At Hazelnut Hill, they go nuts at the holidays! Who doesn’t love hazelnuts and chocolate? They’ve been making hazelnut products for over 26 years, but new owners Ryan, a fourth-generation farmer, and Rachel, a passionate chocolatier, are using the same recipes — plus some of their own — to take hazelnuts to a new level. Order their hazelnuts in bulk for eating, or hazelnut meal for baking; or shop their website for gifts of roasted hazelnuts and specialty products like hazelnut toffee or brittle, chocolate-covered hazelnuts and turtle candy, hazelnut pancake and waffle mix, and hazelnut butter. And don’t miss their hot chocolate or a two-pound Oregon scenic chocolate bar! Hazelnuts are a great source of magnesium and iron, and a good source of protein and healthy fats. There’s nothing more “Oregon” than hazelnuts; the state is the largest hazelnut producer in the U.S. Visit Hazelnut Hill at www.hazelnuthill.com or call 541-510-4464.
