Foreign relations critical

Nuku’alofa - Foreign relations took centre stage for Governmen in the past three weeks as two visiting Foreign Ministers and a local based diplomatic office were guests at Floor 3 of the St George Building in the capital. Prime Minister, Honourable Hu’akavameiliku, and Foreign Minister Hon Fekita Utoikamanu had busy schedules meeting Chinese Foreign Minister, Mr Wang Yi in late May and Austrlian Foreign Minister Hon Senato Penny Wong n June 3.. At the same time, local based Japanese Ambassador Kensaku Munenaga was also on hand during the last month to sign a new grant agreeent that was fcused on helping Tonga’s fisheries sector.

PRC signings Hon Hu’akavameiliku signed the ‘Cooperation Agreement between the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga and the People’s Republic of China’ at the Cabinet Room here in Nuku’alofa. with visiting the People’s Republic of China’s State Councilor and Foreign Minister, Mr Wang. Mr Wang had arrived from Fiji on his South Pacific tour with his entourage, including the Vice Foreign Minister Mr Xie Feng. Hon Hu’akavameiliku welcomed HE Wang and his team and discussed the cooperation agreement before they signed it off. In attendance with the Hon Prime Minister were the Deputy Prime Minister, Hon Poasi Tei, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Hon Fekitamoeloa Katoa ‘Utoikamanu, the Minister for Finance, Revenue and Customs Hon Tatafu Toma Moeaki, the Minister for Trade and Economic Development Hon Dr Viliami Uasike Latu and the Minister for Infrastructure Hon Sevetini Toumo’ua. Several ‘bilateral’ cooperation agreements that shall assist in Tonga’s long-term development in areas of common interest between the two Governments. This included (i) Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Meteorology, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Environment, Communications and Climate Change of the Kingdom of Tonga and the Ministry of Emergency Management of the People’s Republic of China on Cooperation in the Area of Disaster Risk Reduction and Emergency Response; (ii) Memorandum of Understanding on Deepening Blue Economy Cooperation between the Ministry of Trade and Economic Development of the Kingdom of Tonga and the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China; (iii) Handover Certificate on the China-Aid Non-intrusive Imaging Inspection Equipment Project to Tonga Customs Between the Government of the People’s Republic of China and the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga; (iv) Letter of Exchanges on the Provision of One Fingerprint Examination Laboratory between the Government of the People’s Republic of China and the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga; (v) Memorandum of Understanding between China and Tonga on the Grant-Aid Assistance provided by Dongguan City, Guangdong Province, People’s Republic of China to the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga in 2022; and (vi) Agreement for the Peripheral Area of Mala’ekula Royal Tomb Improvement Project. Australia’s support Hon Hu’akavameiliku was also able to meet with new Australian Foreign Minister Hon Penny Wong in the last wo weeks and thanked her for her country’s assistance to Tonga in the face of challenges the Kingdom faced this year. “Australia and Tonga enjoy a deep and long lasting friendship. The people of the Kingdom

of Tonga and His Majesty’s Government are deeply grateful for the helping hand the Australian government extended to us immediately after the Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha’apai volcanic eruption and tsunami,” Hon Hu’akavameiliku said in a joint press conference with Hon Senator Wong at the Australian High Commission residence in Ma’ufanga. “Australia’s quick response came at a critical juncture. Then when we were faced with the presence of COVID-19 again Australia extended a helping hand to us.” Hon Hu’akavameiliku said the visit by the Foreign Affairs Minister two weeks after her appointment to the post “shows a clear sign of the Australian government’s strong commitment to strengthening our bilateral relations and engagement in the region”.
