Although the practice is standard for most US and European architecture practices, none of the large firms in Korea have a dedicated online / social media team. The purpose of this presentation was to illustrate the necessity of marketing through social media and online publications for the growth of brand value and success of a design practice in today’s competitive market.

The Korean Baseball Organization star-turned-LA Dodgers pitcher Hyun-jin Ryu made a bold move to perform on a bigger stage. He was not actively scouted by the Dodgers, but initiated the move with his own determination. The effort to aim higher than his KBO peers is the competitive drive our company should strive for.

With the proper placement within online media, Gansam (a top-5 firm in Korea) has the capability to perform on a bigger and brighter stage, similar to Ryu. With efforts in recent years to expand globally, this would help provide a platform to present the company’s work as a proper global firm.

The list to the right shows the 2014 annual BD100 ranking of the world’s largest architecture firms. My research indicates that 71% of these firms utilize and regularly-update one of the following social media platforms: facebook, twitter, or linkedin.

With the list rearranged to show the top 40 revenue earners from the BD100 list, the firms that do not utilize at least one social media platform happen to be based in East Asia, with the exception of GMP in Germany. This illustrates the idea that marketing teams in East Asia are more traditional and less in-tune with the current global marketing standard. Language barriers are likely a contributing factor as well.

This simple graphic illustrates how Gansam’s lack of an online presence is due to the limited roads that lead to the lone resource of Gansam content; the homepage. The homepage is accessed either by a google search or by typing in the URL. Both methods require the user to already be familiar with the company. An obvious method to gain more exposure online is to create more “roads” that lead to Gansam-related web content. These new paths should facilitate stumbling-upon Gansam-related content when browsing related content by users unfamiliar with the company. The proposal to build new paths to Gansam content online starts with the submission of project summaries to various design websites, such as archrecord, archdaily, and dezeen, who all have an established base of followers and subscribers, as illustrated in Figure F. Upon each upload, the existing base of followers/subscribers will see Gansam’s work. Links in the articles will allow those interested for more info to explore the homepage. Roads to the homepage will increase exponentially.

Social media can be utilized not only to provide followers with updates and news about the company, but increase traffic to the articles when links to these design publications are posted. The result is an interconnected web of traffic amongst multiple sources. The framework allows more visibility for the company on a global scale. Increased web exposure will improve the global brand image and increase the likelihood of creating new work opportunities. Despite being an industry-standard practice in most parts of the world, its absence in the Asian architecture market is one that holds back the potential success of many firms in Asia.
