NEWS OCTOBER, 2017 CHAIRPERSON ADDRESS Congratulations to you all for making a playing or training spot with Nunawading Spectres for this coming 2018 season. You should be very proud as it is indeed a privilege to play for such a high quality and respected representative program. For those new to Nunawading Spectres, we create and email a regular newsletter to try and keep everyone informed about what’s going on. Upcoming events including upcoming uniform days, a meeting for team managers, fee payment days, our inaugural Pre Season Camp and our annual end of year BBQ are all highlighted in this edition of our newsletter so please enjoy the read. You should have all received a copy of our PLAYER and PARENT HANDBOOK which was issued at the first Tryout sessions and is also available on our website. This document is extremely important as it includes all of our rules and guidelines for the coming season. Please ensure you and your child read this document. I'm looking forward to a very exciting and successful 2018 so I hope to see you and chat to most of you as the year goes on!!! Michelle Gow—Chairperson

Page 3 OCTOBER, 2017 DOC REPORT Congratulations on your selection for the upcoming 2017/18 VJBL season! Tryouts are a tough process for all involved, but I am proud of the way everyone conducted themselves, over the course of a very stressful 2 weeks. A HUGE thank you to all our coaches and committee for all their hard work and the extra time required during this period. With tryouts done and dusted we are now able to focus on team unity and achieving our full potential. We have scheduled numerous practise games, so that coaches can begin developing their strategies, based on the talents they have available within their team. Don’t be too worried about results from practise games, as coaches will be introducing new systems and testing what individuals and the team are capable of at this early stage. It is important for players to be able to adapt quickly to the new styles and skills that they will be introduced too, as this will be a constant throughout their basketball journey. It is also important to understand the fundamental skills ie, dribbling, shooting, passing and individual defence, are the most important and should be worked on outside of Spectres training times, for those that want to improve the most. This season we will be having our preseason camp, to fast track team goal setting and bonding. It will also provide our athletes with some tools in regards to best nutrition, injury prevention and sports psychology. We will also be trialling a mentor program with some very experienced coaches, who will be in mentoring roles providing additional support for our coaches. These mentors include Jarrod Scoffern, Brenton Porter and Norm Ackland. After 5 years Norm has decided to step back into this role due to family commitments. We are very thankful for all the hard work Norm has put into the Spectres program. His knowledge and experience has had a huge impact on our amazing results. Thank you Norm! This season we will have 2 Assistant Director of coaching, who will work across both the boys and girl’s programs. Darren Smith will continue his amazing work and we welcome Rohan Sword into this role. We are very excited about the upcoming season, and looking forward to seeing the results that hard work produces!
