01 meaning
MEANING Packaging design is the process that allows your packaging to fulfil a wide range of functions. It has to be functional, holding your product, enabling it tobe transported and stored.

Purpose of packaging to protect its contents from any damage that could happen during transport, handling and storage.
03 history of packaging
Depths of prehistory
between 10,000 and 8,000 B.C first packagings were clay and clay pots or baskets made with vegetable fibres. Wrap food using leaves and shells in the 3rd century AD, they began to use wooden barrels.
In the middle age
terracotta vessels that would have been used to carry liquids have been found that date back to 3000-1500 BCE. By 1200 BCE Ancient Egyptians were pressing molten glass into moulds to create jars of all kinds. use of paper as a packaging material dates back to 1035 BCE. wooden barrels had become the most common way of preserving and transporting food. They could be used for both solids and liquids.
19th century
By the early 1900s, wooden crates and boxes were being replaced by corrugated paper shipping cartons due to their ease of use and low cost. In the early 1920s, the invention of transparent cellophane marked the beginning of the era of plastic. The 1940s brought the development of packaging for frozen food. Aerosol cans were introduced to the mass market in 1952. Aluminium drinks cans became popular in the 1960s and the soft drinks market exploded. Aseptic cartons were invented in 1961 and have been used for preserving long life milk ever since. polyethylene terephthalate (PETE) only became available for containers during the last two decades after entering the market in 1977 as beverage packaging.

Primary or sales packaging
the packaging in direct contact with the product itself and is sometimes referred to as a consumer unit. to making it easier for consumers to handle products
used outside of primary packaging to group a certain number of products to create a stock-keeping unit, commonly referred to as a SKU. to help maintain the integrity of the primary packaging.
TERTIARY OR TRANSPORT PACKAGING referred to as bulk or transit packaging used to group larger quantities of SKUs to transport them from point A to point B (e.g. from production facility to point of sale).
SERVICE PACKAGING packaging which may or may not bear a Brand that is Supplied at the point of sale by the retail, foodservice or other service providers to facilitate the delivery of goods
