01 Define typographic syntax

EXAMPLE OF TYPOGRAPHIC SYNTAX

MEANING OF TYPOGRAPHIC SYNTAX Is arranging the actual letterforms to enchance the meaning of the word.

You can rotate them, stack them, make them varying size, replace letters with numbers or symbols.

02 EXAMPLE OF TYPOGRAPHIC DESIGN

EXAMPLE OF TYPOGRAPHIC SYNTAX

In grammar, syntax is the manner in which words are combined to form phrases or sentences.

Underlying structure composed of linear framework used by designers to organize typographic and pictorial elements.

WORD

CHARACTERISTICS OF TYPOGRAPHIC SYNTAX Symmetry in which both halves of a composition are not identical. SYMMETRY

The unprinted space surrounding type matter on a pages.

In computer systems, a logical unit of information, composed of a predetermined number of bits.

ASYMMETRY

A vertical section of text.

GRID SYSTEM

SYNTAX COLUMN MARGIN

In grammar, the way in which words or phrases are put together to form sentences. In design, the connecting of typographic elements into a visual unity.

Balance among the parts of something.

03 WHAT ?

THE LETTER • Our intial discussion of typographic syntax addresses the intrinsic chatacter of the individual letter.

WORD

LINE

• Word has the potential to express an idea, object or event. • Word signs are independent of the things they represent, yet by design they can be made to signify and reveal their meaning.

• Can be arranged by symmetrically or asymmetrically. • The placement of punctuation marks is of special significance to these alignments.

COLUMN AND MARGIN • The proportion of column is height to width, texture and tone. • The height and width of columns should be carefully examined to ensure adequate legibility.

04 IDENTIFY TYPOGRAPHIC SPACE

Positive form and void 

The structure of typographic space can be defined by alignment and form-to-void relationships that establish a composition’s underlying spatial order.

This field consists of positive form and void upon which the elements are arranged.

Visual hierarchy 

An arrangement of elements in a graduated series, from the most prominent to the least prominent, in an area of typographic space.

Example of visual hierarchy are scale, contrast, direction and position.

ABA form  The primary structural pattern of music is the three-part form of statementdeparture-return (ABA).  The unifying components (the two A’s) function as repetition, while the middle component (the B) functions as contrast.

The typographic grid system  

A skeletal framework used by designers to organize information within a spatial field. Typographic grids provide form and space with proportional harmony and aesthetic beauty.

The typography message The typographic message is verbal, visual and vocal. Messages that clearly communicate and are etched into mind and memory are those characterized by absolute clarity in form and content. 

Function and expressions  

Function is the purposeful communication of information to a specific audience. Expressions, accomplishes its purpose through formal elaboration and ornamentation, creating visual impact.

05 Describe typographic hierarchy

Typographic hierarchy Hierarchy is to help keep your ideas organized,so that viewers can always identify which category of information they are reading.
