Welcome to SCIENCE ADVENTURES, an inspiring science magazine. Singapore’s First and Best Homegrown Science Story in comic for young children. Packed with easy-to-read science stories and activities, SCIENCE ADVENTURES is specifically designed to initiate learning of science. Our SCIENCE ADVENTURES series uses stories and fun activities to bring basic scientific concepts to children in a lively way that will feed their natural curiosity and develop a love of reading. Science is FUN and not just a subject taught in school!

Anita Sebastian Anita is a local writer and graduate of Zoology from the National University of Singapore. Anita’s ranger Anne series of children’s books were launched at the Singapore Writers Festival. Meet Ranger Jack. Jack is a young zookeeper who loves taking care of the animals at the Zoo. His focus is on animals and conservation. In this issue, help Ryan, a smart crow, discover that he is beautiful. And his friend is Olivia, the young naturalist who loves the earth and treasures the nature round her. In every issue, Olivia will highlight one of the environmental issues that we are facing now. You can write to Ranger Jack at Jack.AnimalWhisperer@ gmail.com and to Olivia at Olivia.YoungNaturalist@gmail. com. Both Jack and Olivia will reply to your questions as soon as they can. Your question may also appear in an issue of SCIENCE ADVENTURES. So remember to include your name and the name of your school.

Ryan, don’t worry. Your family and friends love you. Just be yourself.

Okay, Mum, if you say so.

Of course, you may! You are an intelligent little bird.

Dear Ranger Jack, Q: Do crows always look angry? A: Crows are emotional animals. They can show

happiness, anger and sadness. Besides this, crows have excellent memories.

The Animal Whisperer Q: Are crows solitary animals? A: Many types of crows are *solitary.

But they will come together in groups when it is time to *forage.

Q: Are crows really intelligent? A: Crows have the biggest brain to body

ratio among birds. Crows know how to get food by using tools. They know to leave hard nuts on the road to let passing cars break them open.

Q: Can we keep crows as pets? A: Crows are very social and can

form a bond with humans. But birds should fly freely in the sky. There is no reason we should keep birds in cages. *forage: search for food *solitary: living alone or in pairs

Oh! I See *latex: a milky fluid found in many plants *viscous: a thick, sticky consistency between solid and liquid

Taros secrete a *viscous *latex that can cause skin to itch. This is how they defend themselves against insects and animals.

Understanding

Taros Taros come in about a hundred different varieties. They can be oval or round in shape.

Taro plants have broad leaves that are shaped like a palm.

Taros are adaptable to a wide range of soils. Their roots have weak absorption, so plenty of water is needed throughout their growth period.

Oh no, your dad is sleepwalking. Sleepwalking? But he ate all my strawberries…

The next morning…

Huh? I don’t remember eating any strawberries last night…

Dad, you ate all my strawberries last night. You have to buy some for me now!

Oh! I See When most somnambulists (sleepwalkers) wake up, they have no idea of what they were doing during their night-time sleepwalking episodes.

SAS L1 no. 41

21

Somnambulism can be caused by mental stress such as anxiety, fear and tension. Specialists believe that somnambulism may also run in families.

The sphere of a somnambulist’s activities is always the environment that the somnambulist is most familiar with, or the things they do often in the daytime.

Somnambulists can perform complicated tasks in their sleepwalking episodes. They can even navigate obstacles and are often not hurt if they bump into the obstacles. SAS L1 no. 41

That’s not smoke? What is it then?

Oh! I See Only jet airplanes are able to produce *contrails under certain circumstances.

SAS L1 no. 41

*contrails: a trail of condensed water that looks like a white streak

34

w! Wo

w! Wo Let’s take a ride in my jet plane.

I’ll get closer so you can see the “white smoke”.

The “white smoke” is actually formed by lots of water droplets.

When the exhaust emitted from the plane mixes with the air, it condenses into many water droplets.

When the water droplets come together, they form a cloud that is called a contrail.

Oh! I See A contrail is generally one to two kilometres thick.

SAS L1 no. 41

35

I’d love to open the window and touch this contrail.

I see. We really can’t see any of these water droplets at a distance.

No! The temperature out there is minus 40 degrees Celsius. You’d be frozen!

Oh! I’d be an icelolly if I opened the window!

Okay! Susan, Sam… hold on to your seats! Now I’ll show you my flying skills!

Oh! I See Since jet airplanes fly too high, we often don’t see their *fuselages, but only see their contrails.

SAS L1 no. 41

*fuselages: the main body of aircraft

37

Generally, jet airplanes can produce contrails at altitudes from 7,000 to 10,000 metres. Contrails are difficult to form anywhere beyond this range. Most contrails don’t exist for too long and usually disappear quickly. However, some contrails can exist for over an hour, if conditions are favourable, and expand into wider clouds.

When aircraft are performing at an air show, they leave colourful, beautiful and different-shaped smoke trails. These smoke trails are not contrails, but smoke agents made of chemicals and pigments.

Sea turtles live in oceans, drink seawater and feed on marine creatures and *algae. They absorb a great amount of salt from seawater.

Maybe it has sand in its eyes? Oh? I don’t think so. Perhaps it hurts to lay eggs.

Jabbar, stop guessing! Let’s go over and ask the sea turtle.

Sea turtles shed “tears” on the shore and in the sea, but we just can’t see the tears in the seawater.

SAS L1 no. 41

Huh? Why do you have to excrete your salt?

Shedding tears is a way to get rid of the excess salt from my body.

I live in the sea all year round and that is why I have excess salt in my body.

Oh!

Ha, ha… I see. We thought you were crying.

Thanks for your concern…

I’ve laid my eggs. It’s time I went back to the sea. Please keep an eye on my eggs… Bye.

55

Antelope Canyon was formed after soft sandstone was eroded over millions of years. Mainly it was flash flood erosion followed by wind erosion.

The geological structure of Antelope Canyon is red sandstone. The colour of the sun’s rays changes more constantly in deeper parts of the canyon. The sandstone can appear orange, purple and red. Tourists can go in only when they are led by native Navajo tour guides. This is for the protection of natural and cultural heritage, and also for the safety of the tourists.

Ouch! I didn’t see that rock!

I’d wish I could shave off all my long hair.

Try putting your *bangs like this and you won’t have to worry about bumping into anything!

You can’t do that! Our long hair is one of our features.

Oh! Thanks!

The yak is a *herbivore that lives in extremely cold areas. It is a cattle breed that lives in the highest place above sea level in the world. The long hair on the yak keeps it warm, which helps it survive in extremely cold conditions.

Yaks are good at walking on dangerous roads, snowy mountains and in swamps. They are mainly distributed in China’s Qinghai-Tibet plateau in places that are 3,000 metres above sea level. Local *herdsmen, merchants and mountain climbers often use yaks to carry their heavy stuff.
