STACKED KAMPUNGS By Liew Yuqi This project imagines how urban commons may take form in view of the future challenges posed by the transformation of Jurong East into a CBD. It addresses the displacement of existing communities and inflow of new communities, specifically t h e l ow- s k i l l e d i n d i v i d u a l s a n d new professionals respectively, by introducing a research and living facilit y. Common pool resources of food, water and energy are coproduced from waste whilst living spaces are built and reconfigured by inhabitants through scaffolding structures. In shor t, this project hypothesises that these t wo implicated communities will initiate and engage in communing through their collective interests to adapt. This is fuelled by the motivation for new communities to assimilate and for existing communities to stay relevant. 根据市建局规划,裕廊东将在近年 里被打造成新加坡的第二个中央商 务区。社区环境的各种改变也意味 着它将面临纷繁复杂的挑战。这项 设计方案的目的则是通过城市共同 体的概念来探讨裕廊东有可能面对 的社会问题,以及调节裕廊东的快 速改变 。 设计方案所针对的两组社群分别是 面临流离失所的低技能人员和拥有 技能的专业人士。以适应新趋势为 动力,低技能人员将会在3D打印 自行车制造厂学习新技能。专业人 士将以融入新社会为动力,与他们 共同居 住 。

Top As co-production and co-consumption occur concurrently, common pooled resources of waste are upcycled into 3D-printed bicycles, farm produce and energy, creating opportunities for collaborative living and working to take place.
Bottom Underutilised spaces beneath and over the MRT tracks houses complementary coliving and co-working facilities, which are integrated through their form and circulation.

The mechanism for the symbiotic relationship of co-existence, collaboration, and co-production bet ween the t wo communities is an eco-system managed and sustained by them. Situated below and above the MRT tracks adjacent to Jurong East MRT station, the edifice is sited on “unvalued” territory. Such is a gesture in line with the principle of the sharing economy – that of identifying value in surplus resources and appropriating them for alternate uses.
Based on the average amount of food, electricity and water comsumption of an average person in Singapore, the amount of resources required to provide for 50 people is determined. This informs the size and type of space requirements in the design.
The combined proposal assimilates both populations through this transition of an epoch through the design semblance o f t h e u r b a n c o m m o n s. E m b e d d e d within the processes of co-production are spontaneous social exchanges and formation of social relations. In addition to facilitate communing, this project perpetuates the spirit of sharing in the larger context of Jurong East.

The time needed to produce par ts for a completed bicycle is determined by estimations of plastic and metal recyclables that can be collected each day.

Beneath the tracks are collaborative spaces and training facilities for bicycle m a n u fa c t u r i n g. A p n e u m a t i c wa s te system running along the length of the tracks collects waste from neighbouring residential estates.

In view of its adjacency to the MRT station, the ground floor is left publicly accessible, providing spaces for eating, waiting, eating and gathering which serve commuters, pedestrians, the lunch time crowd and shoppers. Programmatically, it locates the manual collection point for food waste, composting area, farming and communal kitchen in
close proximity to each other, affording a visible cycle of food waste into agricultural products and collective activities. While electricity and biogas for the kitchen are produced in-house from food wastes collected, heat for composting and liquid slurry for farming are by-products of these production from the machineries above.

建筑底层的空间将依然公开给大众享 用,好让乘客、行人、午餐人群和购物 者能方 便 聚 集 或 休 息。 设计方案也把食物残渣收集处、堆肥 区、小型农业区和公用厨房安排在同一 个范围内,目的是给予公众了解食物来 源和再循环的机会从而让他们见证城市 共同体的产生,并激发他们的共享精 神。
公用厨房所用的沼气都是通过食物残渣 再循环产生的,而液体浆料和热量是发 电机所产生的副产品。在这个再循环的 系 统 里,所谓的废物都不被浪费。

The six main main circulation cores c o n n e c t i n g “ B i o - Cyc l e” to “ S ta cke d Kampungs” leverage on the strength of the structural columns of the MRT tracks. The openness of each space is also determined by the extent of shade provided by the MRT tracks above.

连接“有机循环”和“立体村落”的六 个主要人行通路利用了捷运轨道结构柱 作为支撑力量。自行车制造厂二楼的工 作室也以轨道所提供的阴凉处作为奠定 各个空 间 范 围 的 主 要因 素 。
沼气发电机和其他机械则位于第三楼 层,与捷运轨道下的气动废料管道有直 接 的 链接。

Above the tracks are residential and communal spaces housing both communities connected by greenery. With an aquaponics system that also serves as a faรงade, the architecture represents a new living typology.

The scaffold housing system is coproduced through accessible assemblage and flexible reconfiguration. Communal and shared amenities are at the core of the building, maximising informal sharing and interaction between neighbours.

Top Left Aquaponics is a sustainable source of agriculture and fish as food. The system can be created out of scaffold. This food production system becomes the façade of the architecture.
Top RIght Waste water is nutrients to the plants w h i l e p u r i fi e d wa te r m ay b e re u s e d for the fishes. A variety of plants and fishes can be grown with var ying growth conditions.
Right Scaffolding used in the construction of the super structure can later be used as a resource for the co-production of liveable spaces. It is also used as a frame for the aquaponics system.
