Challenging the conventional paradigm of dining (where spaces tend to be more static), the entire urban environment here is interpreted as spaces where “kitchens and/or similar programmes can occur and operate anywhere. NUS-Tsinghua Sharing Cities Joint Design Studio 2019: Sharing the Golden Mile
Precedents: The Power of Food The consumption of food is a basic human need for survival. However, beyond our biological needs, the acts of preparing and consuming food have immense potential to be vehicles and solutions to urban issues of disparity, segregation and placemaking.

Social Kitchen Social Kitchen is a communal cooking and dining system which uses food as a community-building and empowering agent for the Golden Mile Co-home residents. Integrated with other sharing sub-systems of incubators and residential forests, a module for meaningful, shared, communal living is developed. At intervals throughout the year, the resident community shall nominate their own “celebrity neighbourhood chefs. Nominees will be offered opportunities to be guest chefs in the Kitchen Mile franchise, sharing their culinary skills and knowledge to visitors while generating capital for themselves and their community.

Kitchen Mile Mobile Kitchen Mile Mobile is a network of decentralised mobile cooking, dining and retail spaces. Developed in conjunction with the Kitchen Mile Flagship, a series of pop-up, customisable urban experiences is curated across the Golden Mile site. Kitchen Mile Mobile is activated when mobile AV pods attach themselves to the various lightweight structures distributed across site. The “colony of mobile pods provide opportunities for street markets, restaurants, food shows and more to spring up on-demand across site, without neccessitating the construction of permanent spaces. The sense of spatial spontaneity seeks to promote the overall vibrancy and attractiveness of the Golden Mile.

Kitchen Mile Flagship Kitchen Mile Flagship is a series of feature spaces integrated to provide for an immersive, unique gastronomical experience for visitors - where they are invited to participate in and consume food from start till end. Positioned at the tip of the waterfront, the Flagship’s architecture merges itself seamlessly with key green public recreational spaces. Boundaries between building and open spaces are blurred, encouraging the dynamic sharing of spaces between the public and private. Logistically, Flagship also acts as a “mothership” for the mobile pods utilised in Kitchen Mile Mobile - a central dispatch and restocking point for the AVs.
