Graded Module
This three-semester design module sequence establishes the foundation for master level creative research and design. Framing design as a creative practice, the objective of the module is to develop a high level of competency in creative research, that leads to architectural design outcomes which are in turn aligned to the faculty’s expertise and interests.
The design module provides students with an opportunity to select from a variety of studio topics; thereby allowing them to choose the themes aligned with their individual interests and intellectual drives, while creating synergy with their studio leader.
The module expects students to demonstrate a high degree of proficiency in creative research, design thinking, representation and communication. In its process, students are not only conducting the research, but also translating its outcomes into actionable strategies in architectural design. The processes and the final products should be communicated through mature representational techniques and non-verbal and verbal mediums. Learning Objectives: 1. To understand that the creative research method employed is appropriate for an exploration of design question in a particular context of studio. 2. To critically deduce a research outcome considering the impact to our social and natural environment. 3. To translate creative research outcomes into architectural approaches, techniques and strategies for well-focused architectural design. 4. To achieve well-focused design exploration as a whole, based on the coherent discussions developed through the creative research and design practice. 5. To use representational methods that are appropriate for the research contents, design process and final architectural design. 6. To use advanced representational techniques in both digital and analogue mediums, simulations in 2D, 3D and 4D mediums to communicate research, iteration and design techniques in architecture. 7. To communicate creative research and design practice in concise and considered verbal, written and performative presentations using a wide range of mediums.
Measurable Outcomes: 1. Provide innovative and rigorous research methods and design concepts in a studio context. 2. Clear individual focus for creative research and design practice within the studio context. 3. Coherence between creative research and design practice. 4. Produce robust architectural representations through an appropriate choice of media. 5. Communicate the design and its contribution to knowledge through verbal, written and physical mediums and artefacts.
