MASTERS DESIGN PROJECTS INTERESTS Masters Design Projects include those explored in two Options Design Research Studios (M.Arch 1), the Advanced Architecture Studio and the Thesis project in M.Arch 2. All studios may explore issues relevant to the interests of the Research Clusters, adjunct teachers and professors in practice. Students are encouraged to capitalise on faculty expertise in widening the scope of investigations which collectively strengthen the Thesis Project in M.Arch 2. Essential and Elective modules are useful in underpinning your Masters studio investigations. Although Options Design Research studios may be varied in content and method, students are advised to be selective and to use them as ‘learning runways’ to identify a Thesis topic and to apply accumulated knowledge there. The Advanced Architecture Studio preceding the Thesis may be used to explore thesis drivers in greater detail and focus. It is expected that the Thesis project will be the most comprehensive and extensive study of all the Masters Design Projects. _______________________________________________________________________________________

DESIGN AS INQUIRY Masters projects can be research investigations where design forms a principal mode of inquiry. Methods can be heuristic or empirical or in mixed modes of inquiry. There are a number of research methods in design investigations leading to different outcomes but they are by no means exhaustive: • textual/graphic analysis of theoretical concepts with investigations drawn from critical discourse using text references, works of art/representation • quantitative analysis to verify qualitative hypotheses with simulation, physical experiment, prototype testing and mixed methods • scenario-driven speculative design to suggest solutions to emergent need. The process in itself is a new way of seeing/thinking which generates many solutions. One version of a solution may be articulated spatially and in full materiality • new research knowledge is interpreted in architecture as a new way of thinking/making/ experiencing • existing practices, processes or existing technologies are applied to design and which produce ‘unprecedented’ outcomes

PROJECT ATTRIBUTES A good Masters project is one where: • the research process informs design strategy which can be followed through a coherent sequential process of explorations or iterations • the research generates an underlying order giving rise to a number of architectural or urban propositions • the research or issues engaged with, give rise to new solutions through design, some of which are singular, permutable or recombinant • it addresses the contextual specificities of site, material, spatial, culture and program and all of the above are communicated through architectural drawings, well-crafted models and annotations which curate a design process and outcome(s) that can be understood without a verbal presentation by the author Beyond a commitment to individual academic portfolios, Masters projects play an important role in characterising the discursive ethos of a design school. It is important that you do your best. _______________________________________________________________________________________

RESEARCH CLUSTERS RESEARCH FOCUS At DOA, our advanced research delves into critical issues of architecture today and tomorrow. In particular, we anticipate and observe new demands and novel forms of buildings, cities, environments, and nature that are emergingthroughout Asia and the equatorial region. DOA research clusters coalesce creative practice, technology, urbanism, landscape, preservation, and the specific expertise of our faculty members into a productive synergy and alignment between teaching and research. The following five clusters drive the M Arch I Design Research Studio Options sequence, the M Arch II Design Thesis and the graduate level elective offering across our Master of Architecture programme. These are nonetheless included in the BA Arch programme booklet so that students may understand the various research interests of their faculty. _______________________________________________________________________________________

I. RESEARCH BY DESIGN The Research by Design (RxD) cluster develops translational research approaches through creative practice. It emphasises the importance of rigorously engaging critical and creative practice in making, writing, and thinking in architecture. RxD strives for innovation and influence in the built environment through its research outcomes. To date, a number of these outcomes have won awards and made considerable impact. RxD focuses on design in Asia and around the equator, and on research into contemporary concerns as well as the identification of speculative future directions. Members work in a range of design modes from sole authorships to collaborative and interdisciplinary configurations. As a group, RxD leverages its combined creative expertise, teaching within design studios and graduate elective modules. Research outcomes include leading buildings, texts, exhibitions, installations, films, drawings, photographs, and object-making, alongside design monographs, edited volumes, and research papers. RxD’s commitment towards integrative and translational creative practices empowers design research with intellectual and critical bearings, for a discipline in transformation.

II. HISTORY, THEORY AND CRITICISM The History, Theory and Criticism cluster develops critical capacities to examine questions of built environmental production and consumption within the historical and contemporary milieu. Taking architecture and urbanism in Asia as a primary focus, members work in interdisciplinary and transnational modes. Our members conduct research into a wide range of topics against the context of colonial/postcolonial and modern/postmodern Asian contexts, teaching these with the aim of encouraging historical literacy and consciousness in students, to enable them to understand how the present is historically sedimented. Besides teaching, members also publish widely and in diverse forms, organise and participate in major conferences and workshops, curate key exhibitions, and advise both governmental and non-governmental organisations in related fields around the world.

III. TECHNOLOGIES The Technologies cluster investigates environmentally performative or sustainable building forms and systems, and generative-evaluative processes for designing liveable environments. It employs traditional and emerging technologies that contribute to a new understanding of the human ecosystem, and emerging computational methods and techniques for discovering the relationships betweenform and performance. Members investigate the relationship between human and natural landscapes, at every scale, from the building component scale to the urban scale. Special emphasis is placed on the examination of high-density Asian cities, and on application of design and building technologies in a tropical context.

IV. URBANISM The Urbanism cluster aims to contribute towards development of sustainable resilient models and innovative advanced urban strategies to cope with various environmental, social, economic and technological challenges facing Asian cities today and in the future. The starting point for this research is a comprehensive understanding of the complexity and distinctive characters of emerging urbanism in the region. Against this backdrop, members investigate emergent urban design issues related to community and participation; conservation and regeneration; ageing and healthcare; well-being and built form; modelling and big data; and resilience and informality. These issues are examined from multiple perspectives and through both inter-disciplinary and transdisciplinary collaborations, in order to question conventional norms and conceptions and establish new visions for a progressive and human-centric sustainable urban future.

V. LANDSCAPE STUDIES The Landscape Studies cluster undertakes research to generate new knowledge of landscapes as socio-ecological systems, and promotes the use of knowledge in governance systems and landscape design to improve the well-being of humans and enhance the ecological integrity of the environment. The geographic focus is primarily high-density urban regions in Asia; however members of the cluster also work in the transitional zones within the rural-urban continuum, where urban regions are expanding at a rapid rate and encroaching into rural landscapes. The overall research approach is both interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary. The cluster looks not only at advancing theoretical concepts and knowledge, but also applying the knowledge in practice and public policy, to shape the environment. Areas of research span a wide spectrum of the socioecological dimensions of landscape: from landscape science and landscape management, to design research and sociobehavioural studies.

THE NEW NORMAL: NEIGHBOURHOOD AND HOUSING DESIGN IN POST COVID-19 PANDEMIC ‘’It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair’’. – A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens The unprecedented Covid-19 pandemic has posed great challenges to our daily lives socially, psychologically, economically and environmentally. Covid-19 pandemic may pass eventually but it is likely another virus will strike again. 83% of Singapore’s population live in public housing across 24 towns and 3 estates built by the Housing Development Board (HDB). More housing estates are being planned. How do we design for future pandemic? How will pandemic measures such as safe distancing, work-from-home, self-quarantine, affect the way we live and interact? What would the neighbourhood design be like for live, work, play and learn? This studio researched the implications of covid-19 on the built environment and envisage a neighbourhood and housing design that can respond in a resilient way to future pandemic. The site is Paya Lebar Airbase (land designated for a future public housing estate) and students use loosely the large-scale masterplan done by Master of Urban Planning students from last semester as the context of their site. This studio project took place when Singapore ended its circuit breaker (lock-down) and moved into phase 1 and 2 of its pandemic safe management measures. For the most part of the semester, studio was conducted online. Students worked on neighbourhood planning in teams of two persons for more

than half the semester and developed their individual projects for the remaining semester. During the process, readings were given to students, they interviewed family, friends and contacts virtually to understand the challenges and wishes, and tapped on their personal experience of the circuit breaker and quarantine. This difficult pandemic situation brought some opportunities though. I am grateful to various experts who enriched students’ learning through their online lectures and guest reviews. This report documents the process and the outcome. I hope it will be a springboard to start more conversations on design for post pandemic. I would like to thank my guest speakers and reviewers Mr. Lee Wai Fong (DPA), Mr. Frven Lim (DPA UK), Mr Edmund Koh and Ms Cherie Yeo (Research & Planning Group, HDB), Ms Nayan Parekh (Gensler), Professor Ho Kong Chong (NUS Sociology), Associate Professor Heng Chye Kiang and Fung John Chye (NUS Architecture). My thanks to my students for their enthusiasm and perseverance despite the challenges of communicating online, zoom fatigue and learning new tools such as Miro and Microsoft Team. Finally, thanks to Lee Hong Xuan (Rainbow) for being a capable studio representative, coordinating Miro pin ups and the studio report. Tan Beng Kiang Associate Professor

MASTERPLAN: THE COLLECTIVES The Collectives

by Lai Wei Song, Lee Hong Xuan (Rainbow) The Collectives aims to be an Enhancer of social interaction on normal days and a Safeguard for social capital during pandemic situation. Covid-19 has affected everyone on multiple levels. The majority found themselves struggling under all the uncertainties and many had fallen through the cracks. Hence, The Collectives looks to strengthen the social support of our current social safety net. Four design principles to amplify neighbourliness and resilience among the residents. It guides planners to focus on Better Quality of Living Spaces, Localisation of Retail Spaces, Integration of Smart Technologies, and advocate for Public Living Rooms. The strategies will be guided with designing consideration in scale. Cultivation of micro communities to forge a strong social support group. Bringing communal spaces closer to dwelling units, reducing isolation and create more collaborative living. Together with maximising natural ventilation and bringing nature and outdoor closer to home. Localisation of retail spaces make essential goods more accessible. With a walkability of 2mins, residents will be able to enjoy their own retail buzz at their ground floor without the need to travel to crowded area. And with the surge in the reliance of online and delivery services, it has expedited the nation’s transition over to a smarter country. So, we explores on how autonomous vehicles (AV) will be the next evolution in the tech-manifestation. Integrating AV routes into our built environment that can be co-shared with pedestrians so to maximise our usable spaces. Overall, The Collectives achieve to promote social interactions during the good days, and be a social shelter during the bad days.

TERRARIA as a precinct concept aims to foster resilience in a closed-system through designing for well-being and self-sustenance. Nature as a valuable resource is leveraged upon for it’s inherent therapeutic and nourishing potential. The block design centres around creating communities among the residents, and especially for the elderly, who are particularly vulnerable to the effects of social isolation. Treating greenery as a three dimensional entity, green spaces of different scales and natures are embedded the unit, block and neighbourhood planning to allow for different types of growing activities to occur. Infrastructure within the centre green nodes provides an avenue for recycling of organic waste, while also functioning as a location for decentralised learning and co-working spaces. These strategies culminatively ensures that residents thrive and flourish regardless of changing circumstances.

Shared 2 Storey Privatised Front Yard Each unit was designed to maximise access to green spaces. The living rooms of the units connect together at a shared front yard, which is accessible through a privatised corridor. This allows for the residents to grow vegetables and plants of bigger variety, while providing for increased opportunity for interaction amongst residents. Ample allocation of balconies facing both inwards and outwards provide for relaxation spaces outside of the enclosed unit while allowing for neighbours to visually connect with each other.

Massing Development Developing from a simple direct stacking, the units were shifted and terraced to create a dynamic facade that maximised the amount of direct sunlight received by the front yards of the residential units. This in turn, allowed for a 6 story green space to be carved out at the centre of the massing, creating an airy and accessible gathering point for the residents. The lengthened double loaded corridors became ideal for the creation of a lively and vibrant inner street.

MOD RESIDENCE @ PAYA LEBAR SEETOH HUI YI JESLYN

MOD Residence @Paya Lebar by Seetoh Hui Yi, Jeslyn

MOD Residence @Paya Lebar is located at the old Paya Lebar Airbase where it has been envisioned to be a modernized residential neighbourhood that welcomes flexible spatial modification and crowd moderation in times of a pandemic. With the use of modules and grid-like systems, the overall design proposes spaces that reconfigurable and transformable, forming micro-communities and breathable spaces that are self-sustaining and pandemic resilient. Modular housing units are transformable based on the lifestyles of different individuals or families over time. These units are stacked and are centered around a main courtyard space. Individual mini yards are allocated to each unit, functioning as a sanitization zone before one enters the unit, or as a space to drop off deliveries or parcels safely. It also creates opportunities for both incidental and intentional interactions. The positioning of the units creates corner views and ensures sufficient daylight and air circulation within the spaces.

GROUP: HAU HUI MIN, SEETOH HUIYI JESLYN, DESIREE TAN LI WEN

MASTERPLAN: MODS IN THE HOOD Mods in The Hood

by Hau Hui Min, Tan Li Wen Desiree and Seetoh Hui Yi, Jeslyn Mods in The Hood is envisioned to be a modernized neighbouhood that welcomes various modes of extensions and programs, allowing for flexible spatial modification and crowd moderation in times of a pandemic. The neighborhood is zoned into 3 primary niches - Healthcare, Study and Work, and Recreation - and are linked together by a commercial spine. Modules and gridlike systems are utilized as the key principles for spatial planning and modification. Wall panels can be installed following the grid, and these larger compartments can then be transformed into individualized units when the demand for isolation or quarantine wards rises in times of pandemic. Modular units puntuate out and interact with the commercial spine, linking both the zones and generating activity within them. During pandemic, these units can be rotated and lined up to form a barricade which discourages residents from crossing over to other zones, and thus reduces cross-contamination and lower the risk of transmission. Mobile extensions are located on the first floor of the podium blocks and the open green spaces. These units are constructed out of a lightweight structure that allows it to slide inwards and outwards. During a pandemic, the arrangement of these mobile extensions can be configured to create smaller spaces for small-scale programs, which helps to reduce the congregation of large crowds. With the additional help of technology, residents are able to use an app to decide as a community the kinds of weekly programs they want happening in their neighborhood. This system allows for a variety of programs to consistently happen in their neighbourhood, thus enriching the residents’ lives.
