President’s Message Warm greetings to fellow alumni and friends! Like many of you, my wife and I have fond memories of our student days at NUS. Beyond attending classes and taking exams, this was where we acquired strong disciplinary skills, learnt valuable life lessons and made lifelong friends. The education we received at NUS laid strong foundations for us to succeed, and opened many opportunities for our careers. On the personal front, NUS was where I met my wife, and courted her over many games of squash and bridge! Although the Science canteen was surrounded by construction work then, I spent many hours there in the company of friends, dreaming and watching the world go by. I trust that each of us has our own unique stories about our time at NUS. NUS is delighted and proud to count you as our alumni. Our campus calendar features many events for our alumni - reunions, talks, golf games and so much more. Alumni participation brings an exciting, electric buzz to the life of our campus, which is home to a rich, diverse and interesting community of students, staff, faculty, industry partners and alumni. There were some particularly memorable and successful events, namely the NUS Day of Service, Bukit Timah Homecoming, Kent Ridge Alumni Family Day and the NUS Alumni Leaders Forum. It showcased our University’s strong spirit, and our alumni united in various service causes, interests and passionate support for their alma mater. Do continue to participate in these signature events! I must especially thank all our alumni leaders, volunteers and supporters, for your initiative and passion for NUS. We have such a wide representation of alumni groups, overseas chapters and individuals who do very remarkable work to create very meaningful connections between alumni, as well as alumni and NUS. I am also grateful to the NUS Alumni Advisory Board – their active involvement has resulted in successful runs of the U@live series, the NUS Alumni Leaders Forum, NUS Day of Service as well as admirable fundraising efforts for the Alumni Students Advancement Committee. Each of you has contributed towards building NUS up, and making NUS a stronger and more cohesive community. A passionate, diverse and talented alumni body of 300,000 strong is a formidable force. I look forward to working closely with our alumni alongside our NUS community of faculty, staff, students and supporters to make NUS a truly great University, and an institution which we hold dear and are deeply proud of. Together, we will keep the NUS flag flying! Prof Tan Eng Chye Science ’85, NUS President

NUS OAR ANNUAL REPORT 2018
Director’s Message Dear fellow alumni and friends, What an exciting year at NUS! In early 2018, NUS warmly welcomed new top leadership: President Professor Tan Eng Chye (Science ’85) and Senior Deputy President and Provost Professor Ho Teck Hua (Engineering ’85). Together with NUS’ senior management, they presented bold new plans for the University, and unveiled the University’s new vision, mission and values to further unite, inspire and guide all staff, students and alumni. Upon hearing NUS President’s presentation at the NUS Alumni Leaders Forum (ALF) in April last year, alumni leaders enthusiastically offered their support and encouragement, and asked Prof Tan, “what more can we do for NUS?”. This was really heartening for all of us to hear. Also at the ALF, one of the key topics broached by NUS President with alumni leaders was about lifelong education, and how it will help our alumni stay ahead and lead meaningful careers. The University has since successfully launched the NUS Lifelong Learners Programme (L3), where alumni can take a range of industry-relevant courses using SkillsFuture Singapore funding and NUS Virtual Vouchers. In my opinion, that NUS has lifelong education initiatives specifically enabled for our alumni speaks volumes about how the University cares for our alumni and appreciates all our alumni are doing for our University and society. Looking back at 2018, it has been another memorable, meaningful year for alumni relations. These pictures in the Annual Report tell amazing stories of fun times of alumni bonding over common interests and opportunities to showcase our beloved alma mater. Many of you stepped up to lead and join committees, moderated dialogues or performed at our events, gave invaluable advice, connected NUS to partners and opportunities, fundraised and gave generously. Your actions have truly encouraged my team by letting us know that you feel connected to our beloved alma mater. Casting my thoughts to the year ahead, I am looking forward to catching up with our alumni again at our key events including the Bukit Timah and Kent Ridge homecomings, the NUS Alumni Awards, and when we roll up our sleeves for the NUS Day of Service. At any time, my team and I are also available to discuss alumni engagement strategies and ideas, and how we can invite others to also be an active, involved member of our University. Mr Bernard Toh Architecture ’84, Director, NUS Alumni Relations

Class Ambassadors Class Ambassadors are appointed because they possess great enthusiasm as well as the ability to build good rapport with others, and have demonstrated the desire to contribute back to the University. They help ensure that their cohort continue to keep and even strengthen their ties with their Faculty, School, Hall or Residential College and alma mater after graduation. 177 new Class Ambassadors were appointed from the Class of 2018, and their appointments were formally conferred at the Class Ambassadors Investiture held on 26 March.
