1

President’s Message Dear fellow alumni and friends, Looking back at 2019, I am heartened by the strong support and proud of the achievements of our alumni in Singapore’s Bicentennial Year. 21 outstanding alumni from diverse backgrounds were honoured at the biennial NUS Alumni Awards, which recognise alumni who have excelled locally or internationally, as well as made significant contributions to the University and society. Their dedication to achieve excellence in their chosen professions and contribute to society truly embody the NUS values of innovation, resilience, excellence, respect and integrity. NUS has a strong tradition of service and one of the alumni-led initiatives is the NUS Day of Service that takes place every first Saturday of September. On this day, the entire NUS family comes together and work alongside one another to help those less fortunate among us as well as to care for our environment. Now in its fourth year, the event continued to garner increased support from our alumni, students and staff who championed or volunteered across a diverse range of meaningful community services. Singapore’s first net-zero energy building, SDE4, is located in NUS School of Design and Environment (SDE) and alumni and their family had the opportunity to learn about the building’s architecture and features on a guided tour during NUS Alumni Weekends. This series of events is part of the NUS Office of Alumni Relations’ efforts to help alumni stay connected to your alma mater and to complement the University’s drive for lifelong learning. In today’s volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) world, we need to continually reskill and upskill to stay competitive and to thrive. In academic year 2019/20, the number of alumni who enrolled in courses in the first semester nearly tripled the initial enrolment across two semesters in 2018. I am encouraged by our alumni’s active pursuit of lifelong learning and hope that even more of you will embark on this fruitful journey to better yourselves and make even greater contributions to our society, nation and beyond. Last but definitely not least, I am thankful to our alumni leaders and volunteers who selflessly share their precious time and invaluable experience with the University. The concerted efforts and steadfast support of the NUS community have steered us to where we are today. I am confident that together, we can continue to thrive as #OneNUS! Professor Tan Eng Chye Science ’85, NUS President

Director’s Message Dear fellow alumni and friends, 2019 has been a busy, exciting and fulfilling year for the NUS Office of Alumni Relations (OAR). U@live: Lifting Thought Leadership series was re-launched after a year’s hiatus, with a new format that features prominent panellists to spark discussion and generate revolutionary ideas to address issues that are significant to Singapore and beyond. We were honoured to have Minister for Education Mr Ong Ye Kung for the inaugural session on “Education - Still a Social Leveller?” and Senior Minister of State for Law and Health Mr Edwin Tong (Law ‘94) for the second session titled “Islamophobia – Do Two Wrongs Make a Right?”. Both sessions received strong support and enthusiastic response from our alumni and students, as well as students from other institutes of higher learning, who participated in the essay competition and voiced their views on the respective topics. The 51st UM-NUS Inter-University Tunku Chancellor Golf Tournament is a testament to the strong and longstanding ties between NUS and the University of Malaya. I am honoured to be appointed as Golf Captain and proud of Team NUS for bringing back the trophy at this year’s tournament. Well done, Team NUS! OAR continues to engage and provide meaningful platforms for our alumni to stay connected with our alma mater and one another. New events and initiatives – Seeds of Good @ NUS, NUS Alumni Weekends, Philippine Film Festival, and NUS Alumni Travel Programme – were introduced to meet the diverse needs and interests of our large alumni family of 311,600. Flagship events such as Bukit Timah Homecoming, Kent Ridge Alumni Family Day, NUS Day of Service, and the various film festivals, networking events and lifelong learning programmes continue to be well received and supported by our alumni. At every alumni event, I enjoy meeting each and every one of you and am encouraged by the enthusiastic participation by fellow alumni who value their bond with the University and the friendships they have forged on campus. Alumni constitutes the largest group in the NUS family, and I look forward to your continued support in our efforts to nurture mutually beneficial and lifelong relationships with you so that you may join us in achieving NUS’ aspirations. Mr Bernard Toh Architecture ’84, Director, NUS Alumni Relations
