Born and raised in the Bronx, FETTi D’Biasi has become one of today’s top sneaker artists. Her exhilarating rise to custom sneaker fame began in 2001 with a pair of Timberland Field boots that she made her own by adding some fabric. From there, she quickly gained notoriety around her neighborhood for having exclusive sneakers. In 2006, FETTi entered and won her first sneaker competition, the International Sneaker battle, and since then, she’s been unstoppable! This is her day as she begins her custom work.

J Parker has been custom painting sneakers and apparel for more than five years and designing footwear for approximately one. Although he still has much to learn as a footwear designer, J Parker believes that his passion for designing and the professional training he received from the legendary D’wayne Edwards at Pensole Footwear Academy in Portland, OR, are what set him apart. 7:00am I wake up.

designer
y
urri Mial is currently a Footwear Designer II for Under Armour in Baltimore. As with most in the biz, his interest in sneakers and sneaker culture began in childhood, when his bible of choice was the Eastbay catalog. Immersed in each issue, which he kept in boxes that he still has to this day, Yurri educated himself on different sneaker products, materials and technologies.
But the desire to make the leap from sneaker aficionado to sneaker designer did not come until his senior year in high school when he read an article in a footaction publication. “The article highlighted one of my favorite sneaker designers, Aaron Cooper,” says Yurri, “and once he introduced industrial design to me, it was the beginning of my journey.” And what a journey it has been. After receiving his B.S. in Industrial Design from the Art Institute of Philadelphia, where he graduated with honors, he got a stint designing performance products for Puma Running. This he did for four years before joining UA. Throughout his young, yet impressive career, Yurri has pushed himself to design meaningful footwear that evokes the same emotional connection and excitement as the shoes he grew up with. With his creations, he hopes to achieve three goals. “I want to tell great stories through my designs,” he explains. “I want to create product that wows consumers and even other designers. Lastly and most importantly, I want to create purposeful product.” For inspiration, Yurri looks to musicians, artists and “essentially anyone who thinks differently than I do,” he says. He also likes to

keep tabs on developments in other industries and areas of design, especially material innovations and processes. To stay forwardlooking, he uses trend-forecasting services. “If you ask me, the future of footwear is materials,” Yurri says. “There have been so many advances in technology that I can see being applied to the footwear industry that haven’t yet.” Interestingly, Yurri doesn’t consider himself a true sneakerhead—but only because he holds too much respect for the culture: “I’ve got the awareness and mentality of a sneakerhead, but my collection doesn’t come close to some of the true diehards out there.” Nevertheless, Yurri has his favorites. Of the ones he’s created, the Puma Bioweb and FAAS 100 Collection occupy a special place in his heart. As to his personal collection, he’s split between his Visvims and Eggplant Flightposite 1s. Always on the lookout for inspiration, especially in the here and now of the sneaker industry, Yurri currently has his eye on the new Lebrons XI. Ask him why and the professional designer in him responds: “The complexity of the construction, the attention to detail and the overall aesthetic come together well to make a really compelling product.” Had he not entered the world of athletic footwear, Yurri would have still pursued a creative profession—such as designing websites and branding. “I love the realm of 2D, anything goes,” he says. Even in 3D, that same attitude is palpable and benefitting sneakerheads everywhere. So what does the future hold for this up-and-coming sneaker designer? In five years, he sees himself as a senior designer in the Running category. In 10, he says, “I’ll be my own boss and create products out of my own studio.”

When did you open the first 4UCaps store?
The first store opened in May 1998.
Have you expanded since then?
We now have three stores located in the Bronx, Manhattan and West Nyack, as well as the website, 4ucaps.com
Have you seen the trends in caps change at all over the years? Trends come and go, some faster then others: snapbacks, strapbacks, custom visors and straps.

Have you collaborated with New Era or any other company?
We have our own exclusive caps that are made by both Mitchell & Ness and New Era.
What is your hottest-selling snapback and fitted you have sold?
That’s hard to say, because all the custom caps are made in small numbers—72 caps—that are then divided between three stores and the website. When it’s a hot sneaker, then we have a few hats to match up. I will say that, for us, fitted caps outsell snapbacks.
Do you think the sneaker community is influenced with hats?
The sneaker community is a huge influence on hats and color combination and the team logos we use.
What do you see as a major trend or must-have in the hat market?
Most guys just want something unique, different logos and color combos to match up with their sneakers. Everyone can get the sneakers, but the caps are what set the outfit off.
