Making Learning Fun & Rewarding All sneakerheads, young and old, want to be at the top of their shoe game. In schools, however, where peer pressure continues to be rampant, staying on trend in clothing and footwear, even for students whose families can’t afford it, can mean the difference between being accepted and being bullied. In fact, some may argue that school has increasingly become a place where fashion is more important than education. Travis Singleton, the Sneaker Reporter, however, plans to change all that—one inner city school at a time. Launched in 2013, his nonprofit, Kicks 4 Grades, encourages underprivileged students ages 8-15 to do well in school by rewarding good grades with a new pair of sneakers. The initiative is important to Singleton as he believes learning and looking good can—and should—take place simultaneously. He also knows first hand what it’s like to be financially disadvantaged and therefore unable to afford trendy footwear. Kicks 4 Grades is Singleton’s way of giving back and using his platform as the Sneaker Reporter to motivate children to learn. The organization recognizes select honor roll students (who earn As and Bs) with a pair of the latest sneakers of their choice. Moreover, Kicks 4 Grades reaches students where they are, on social media, through an online contest. The rollout of the program focused on students at Lilla G. Frederick School in Singleton’s home town of Dorchester, Massachusttes. Interested participants were asked to post a picture of their most recent report card with the tag “@Kicks4Grades” on Twitter, Instagram or Travis Singleton’s Facebook page. From there, all qualifying entries were entered into a raffle and winners

were announced last December at a private celebration at the school. IIn its first year, Singleton and Kicks 4 Grades donated 25 pairs of sneakers, worth $110-$180 each, that included everything from Jordans and Lebrons to AIs and Melos. Student feedback was overwhelming. Both parents and teachers also noted that students seemed more motivated to work now that they actually had something for which to strive. At press time, students are already asking about the next installation of the contest. “I didn’t know how touching it was for these kids and how involved they would want to be. It was incredible and the fact I had a line of kids asking for my autograph as if I were Justin Bieber was even more amazing,” said Singleton. He added that serving as a role model is a responsibility he takes seriously and that his desire is to enrich the lives of tomorrow’s leaders and help nurture the next

Barack Obama or the first female president. Solely funded by Singleton and donors, Kicks 4 Grades was a tremendous success in 2013 and is committed to continued growth. Singleton is using his profession as a sportswriter to connect with major brands and NBA players with whom he interacts to bring attention to these kids. He’s currently in partnership discussions with several companies and individuals looking to support Kicks 4 Grades. His ultimate goal is to expand the organization to every state. The dream is to support all inner city kids, motivating them to be their very best. How long have you been in the sneaker game?

Not that long—about 5-6 years. I started to get interested in sneakers (especially Jordans) because I love black American culture and music. I’m not a hiphop person but I love how they style themselves, which attracted me and inspired me to collect Air Jordans. But I wear other kinds of sneakers, too—not just Air Jordans.

How many pairs of sneakers do you have in your collection?

I have about 70 pairs of sneakers... I love not only sneakers but all kind of shoes, so I own more than 100 pairs of shoes, including heels and boots.

What’s your favorite sneaker in your closet?

Hmmm... the hardest question you can ask me... I wear Air Jordan Playoff 12 and Black Cement 3 a lot, so maybe they’re my favorites. Black-and-whiteand-red combinations never go wrong and are easy to match up with an outfit.

Do you see a lot of females in Tokyo wearing sneakers and wearing trendy clothes?

Well...girls in Tokyo are very fashionable, stylish and unique. You might have heard of Harajuku, which is the place for any kind of fashion in Tokyo. The people there have their own style. However, in terms of sneakers, people are on trend in Japan, so yes, a lot of Japanese girls are wearing sneakers. Japanese girls are very quick to catch on to a trend. But unfortunately, they are wearing sneakers because they are on trend, not because they love sneakers, I think...

Like I said before, everybody is trying to buy sneakers. One reason is sneakers are on trend in Japan; another is for resale. You’ll see homeless people hired to wait in line for sneaker raffles. You’ll also see people from other countries getting several pairs of Jordans for resale in their own countries or even in Japan. Japan wasn’t like that before…but that’s just my opinion.

What do you see happening with the Tokyo sneaker culture?

Some new sneaker fans here in Tokyo may get hooked by the allure of sneakers and become sneaker collectors, while others who are fickle will get sick of them after the sneaker trend has passed. When that happens, the true sneaker lover will be happier because that means it’ll be a little easier to buy sneakers again...I hope this happens soon.

Do you rock all your kicks or are there a few that are shelved? Yes, I wear all my sneakers, even the rare ones. Sneakers are for walking.

If you had the opportunity to work with a major brand or designer, who would it be with and why?

I would say Reebok. I love all kinds of sneakers and shoes, but lately Reebok has been releasing awesome collab sneakers with Bape, Keith Haring, Concept—they’re unstoppable. And their ideas are immeasurable. Every time I see their collab sneakers, they make me excited and make me think about how I want to style myself with them. In other words, they make me want to buy them ALL.

Are sneaker expos popular in Tokyo? If so do you attend?

Not as popular as in the States, I guess. A sneaker expo was held here the other day, but I didn’t go because I didn’t think there would be too many girls’ sizes. Plus, I’m a little shy and don’t know what I’d do if my Instagram followers said “hi” to me. Lol.

japanese diva

I’m from Japan. I live in Tokyo now but I’m originally from the southern part of Japan.

Everyone has been wearing sneakers these past few years. It’s a lot easier nowadays for sneaker-lovers like myself to buy sneakers (except for the very rare ones). However, it’s still very hard for us to get what we want because even the people who don’t have a real interest in sneakers are trying to buy them. I guess that’s ok if they are becoming more interested in sneakers. But it’s getting crazy.

Where are you from?

How has the sneaker scene changed these past few years?

WITH

My name is Hiromi. I work for an advertisement company. I’m also a professional backup singer and recording artist. In my free time, I hang out with my friends. Since starting Instagram, I’ve made a lot of new friends who love sneakers as much as I do. Some of them take really good pictures of sneakers, so gradually I got into photography, too. Now, I love taking pictures, as well as being photographed. I can speak English because I studied it for 4 years in college, and after graduation, I lived in Australia for 7 months. While in Australia, I taught Japanese.

interview

WITH

travis singleton Dorchester, Massachusetts-native Travis Singleton currently resides in Oklahoma City, where he works with the Oklahoma City Thunder as a sportswriter. What is the Sneaker Reporter and when did you launch it?

I launched Sneaker Reporter (www.sneakerrepporter.com) in February so it’s coming up on a year—time goes by fast. Sneaker Reporter bridges the sneaker and sports worlds by reporting on the ins and outs of favorite athletes on and off the field or court. It gives fans a real look into who these players are besides what they reveal through social media.

What are your future goals for the brand?

I want to have a Sneaker Reporter in every major city, just like ESPN has a different site in each major city. I know there are people as passionate about sneakers and sports as I am and I want to give them the same opportunity to live their dreams that I’ve had.

Who was the very first athlete you ever interviewed and how was that experience?

The first player I interviewed was Rajon Rondo in 2009. It was crazy because I almost got in big trouble for taking a picture with him after my interview. To this day, I’m the only sportswriter from Boston to get a picture with him. Rondo was very talkative at the time because the Big 3 was getting all the shine. He is very intelligent and gave me great quotes.

What is BlackAthlete.net? Is it connected to Sneaker Reporter in any way? BlackAthlete gave me the opportunity to actually get into sports writing. It believed in me and my drive. It’s separate from Sneaker Reporter, but BlackAthlete will always be a part of me, no matter what, because it changed my life.

What advice would you give to young reporters who want to become successful like you?

You have to be persistent and make sure you have a great following. You also have to make sure that you aren’t nervous or the players and media will eat you alive. You have to think outside the box as a sportswriter and ask questions that make players think. Last but not least, you have to get your news out first to be relevant.

How many kicks do you have in your collection?

I own about 180 pairs of kicks. I started collecting in 2005.

What’s your all time favorite sneaker?

That would have to be the DB4s or the South Beach Lebron 8.

If you were not a reporter, what would you be doing right now?

I would probably be in school or I’d be working in the marketing department of a big corporation. I still want to own my own sneaker store so that would be another thing.
