OBESIT By most estimates, more than half of all dogs are overweight and 25 percent of all dogs are obese. As with their human counterparts, dogs typically get fat because they eat too much and exercise too little. But unlike their human counterpart, dogs love walks as much as they love cookies – and the former can go a long way toward shedding pounds and reducing the risks associated with extra weight.

Different breeds carry their weight differently, but if you can’t feel your dog’s ribs there is a strong probability it is overweight and this would be a good time to reduce their fat and snack intake. It would also be smart to spread their meals throughout the day as it will level out their metabolism and better manage their glycemic activity reducing the likelihood of digestive disorders.
Dogs of any age can suffer from obesity but it is understandably more common in less active dogs. Obesity-related health problems can include but are not limited to heart disease, a reduced life span, ruptured ligaments, labored breathing, fatigue, risk for heat stroke/heat exhaustion, and osteoarthritis. Feeding dogs smaller meals more often helps dogs burn calories more efficiently. However, no more food per day should be fed. Instead, owners should use measuring cups or break NutraBars to divide their dogs’ daily rations into three or more measured feedings. Feeding dogs less of their regular food per day is another option. If a dog is being overfed (such as when owners don’t measure the amount of food), simply cutting back to a measured amount of food per day can facilitate weight loss, but do not cut back on their dietary protein which is essential for amino acid production and their overall wellness. It's the fats, carbs and fillers we want to limit. Instead of just feeding a dog less, switching them to a low-calorie super premium high protein food will be more effective.

Companionship is the most universal gift that dogs give us. Scientific evidence has proven that many health benefits come along with the pet bond. Dogs help us relax, lower our blood pressure, keep us active and more. Dogs happily work for us, too. Service dogs can assist those with mental or physical disabilities, work as search-and-rescue dogs, guard valuable property and protect us from harm by sniffing out threats and criminal activity. Even our companion dogs can be trained to proudly defend our homes and families.Though dogs can still often survive in the wild, they thrive with the care humans can provide.

PULL TOYS go back to ancient Egypt and Greece and date back to 2000 B.C. Early examples of clay animal toys with wheels attached to the legs were perhaps the first pull toys. The ability to pull the animal along added a dimension of movement not found with other kinds of playthings that GO.

Dogs, particularly those suffering from arthritis or those who have lost the use of one or more of their legs, may benefit from extra support when walking. Support may come in the form of slings or ambulation carts, also known as doggie wheelchairs. Ambulation carts are specifically designed to support a dog who cannot move around due to injury or infirmity of both hind legs or even all four legs. Dogs with paraplegia of the hind legs often are fitted with a two-wheeled cart allowing the dog to move around on his front legs without dragging his tail end along behind. Dogs that are quadriplegic may need a four-wheeled. Keeping the dog active will allow it to have a much more fulfilling life and will make the dog more able to partici-
pate in whatever physical therapy is required so it can move without as much pain when a cart supports all or part of their body weight.

Unlike human diets where carbohydrates provide on demand dietary energy, fats provide the dietary energy best suited for dogs. The more active your dog, the more fat and protein will be needed in its daily diet to thrive and perform. But not all dogs are workers, or sporting dogs or heavy into play. Some of our pet children are happy couch potatoes or retiring seniors and so they need fewer dietary calories from fats. NutraBar Low Fat contains the same super premium 27% protein as the Original and the Senior Bars, but has 30% few fat calories.

OVER FED, BUT UNDERNOURISHED The majority of dogs in America sadly, are overweight. A significant percentage is morbidly obese. They got that way because we over feed and under exercise the dogs we love. There are consequences. A dog carrying excess weight will stress its joints, its heart, lungs and vital organs shortening its life by years. See video >
