WINTER ESCAPES

1. Monument Valley is known for its majestic beauty and imposing sandstone. If you don’t mind colder temperatures, Monument Valley offers dazzling landscapes with smaller crowds. This would be a smart strategy if you want to avoid long lines, delays, and reservations associated with more populated tourist areas. And as an additional benefit, there are fewer insects in winter.

2. Havana Cuba is a warm weather option if you are considering a vacation this winter. The best time to visit is during January and February as the winter brings a drier climate and sunnier skies to the island. Relax on the beautiful pristine beaches and enjoy the clear waters of this tropical Caribbean paradise. 3. Quebec City is a good choice if you are looking for a Christmas vacation. Ranked as one of the 15 best cities in the world and one of the best Christmas destinations, this beautiful city offers plenty of winter activities and holiday programs for all tastes and ages. Quebec City combines snow, lights, and excellent shopping with a historical charm that makes you feel like you are in old world Europe. 6

JESSICA LOWNDES Music, acting and writing are some of the many talents of the beautiful Jessica Lowndes. The Canadian actress tells us about her new movie, “Over The Moon” in which she wrote, produced and starred in. She also shares some of her beauty routines with us!

“Over the Moon” tells the story of a Matchmaker (Lowndes) who agrees to set up her best friend (Wes Brown) in hopes of furthering her career but as she comes closer to her goal she realizes he has been her perfect match all along and struggles with the right way to tell him how she feels. The film’s original songs and score are also written by Lowndes along with esteemed music producer Evan White from Vandelux. Wes Brown stars opposite Lowndes. The two actors previously worked together on the CW TV series 90210.

9

-How did the idea of writing Over the moon begin? I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember but really started focusing on writing my own screenplays two years ago. I wrote the musically inspired romantic comedy “Over the Moon” last year. I remember seeing the production of Cyrano De Bergerac when I was in high school and being blown away by its complexity. I love how the playwright, Edmond Rostand, tackles the concept of love in such an interesting way. At it’s core, it’s about a “physical, surface” love versus a “pure, intellectual” love. This film is a modern take on that set in the world of matchmaking and dating apps, with a musical twist. I couldn’t write a film without adding some sort of musical element to it. I can definitely identify with the lead character in certain ways. I have always loved love. I’m probably one of the biggest hopeless romantics you will ever meet. I have also been known to play matchmaker with my friends and I’ve been pretty successful at setting them up!

-How long did it take since you had the idea of writing the movie until its creation? Two years ago, I had one of these pilot seasons where I kept getting callbacks and getting down to the final two or getting so close but not booking it. After that, I thought to myself; I need to go home and start writing roles that I'm inspired by and something that I love to do. I thought it should focus on stories that need to be told. It took over a year to get this movie made and was incredibly difficult at times because there were so many moving parts but when I finally got on set, the feeling was so overwhelming and rewarding. -What was the most challenging aspect of the creative process of the movie? The filming was probably the hardest part for me if I’m honest because I knew every single word of every single character in the script. I had to take off my writer and producer hat, and really practice on being present and in the moment while I was acting.

Vitamin D Supplementation

2 I recommend testing your vitamin D levels once a year when you get your annual check-up. Most people are Vitamin D deficient, and it’s especially an issue during the winter months when we get less of those warm sun rays. Taking a Vitamin D-3 supplement every day of at least 1,000 IU depending on your blood results and sun exposure will make a big difference in your overall health. This vitamin is essential for many aspects of body functions; symptoms such as weight gain, sleep issues, low energy, among many others can be triggered by a Vitamin D deficiency.

Winter Beaut y Tips

When winter comes, our skin begins to dry out because it is less exposed to the humidity that summer produces and for this reason it is more prone to irritation. Here are some tips for easy and simple routines.

1. Scrub

The excessive tanning of the summer on the beach can cause a buildup of visibly dry skin. The scrub is your best tool to combat the dryness of your skin and reveal a soft skin underneath, the sugar scrub with olive oil is an excellent homemade option for winter.

2. Moisturizer for your body Applying body creams daily as part of your winter skincare is essential to keep the skin hydrated. Body lotions will seal the moisture and prevent the sensation of itchy dry skin. A natural oil such as almond or coconut oil will also do the job.

3. Don't forget your Lips With the decrease in moisture, the lips also suffer. Be sure to choose a good lip balm that you can apply overnight. You can also have one on hand at all times during the day when you feel your lipstick is drying too much. A good idea to make your lips look fuller and healthier is to apply natural oils such as peach oil or almond oil and then take a soft toothbrush and gently rub it for 1 minute.

5. Hair Hair can also dry a lot this time of year. The lack of moisture can cause split ends. Organic shampoos are a good option to maintain the natural shine of your hair. You can make your own shampoo using baking soda and apple cider vinegar to wash your hair. You will find countless stories of people online who say their hair is fuller, healthier and stronger with these two natural ingredients. It can also help people with dandruff.

4. Face

Do not forget to use a daily cream with SPF in the winter as you are still exposed to sunlight. As a natural alternative, you can make your homemade facial moisturizer with SPF. You can find many options online, using red raspberry seed oil or non-nano zinc oxide powder. This last ingredient is the main natural sunscreen ingredient.

E ASY WAYS T O UPDAT E YOUR A P P E A R A N C E I N 20 20 Do you want a small change? Start with your closet. Fashion experts advise adjusting your appearance at least every five years so you can better adapt to the stage of life you’re in.

- Clear a crowded closet, determine what items you are keeping for the wrong reasons and donate them to charity. Makes for a great holiday tradition!

- Don’t be afraid to give an old look new life by adding nothing more than a new accessory or fun jewelry. A funky pair of earings can really make that look pop. - A good way to illuminate your smile is to use baking soda or a little charcoal powder. It is very cheap and the results are brilliant. - What if you change the frames of your reading glasses to a more modern or maybe more classic style? - A simple update to your hairstyle can do wonders. Try moving your part from the middle to the side. You would be surprised at how different you look. - Experiment with your eyeliner. Try playing with different styles while using a thin tip for greater control. Get creative! - Remember that life is short, so don't save your favorite pieces for special occasions. Go ahead, make use of them and have some fun...wear them to the market!

Managing stress through breathing IF YOU FEEL ANXIOUS OR OVERWHELMED, YOU CAN USE YOUR BREATH AND ADD A YOGA POSE TO CALM DOWN AND FIND YOUR CENTER AT ANY TIME.

Nadi Shodhana Nadi = channel shodhana = cleaning, Purifying Traditionally Nadi Shodhana includes breath retention, f xed ratio breathing, and the repetition of certain "seed" mantras.

For many of us, relaxation means zoning out in front of the TV or going to social media at the end of a stressful day. But this does little to reduce the damaging effects of stress. Deep breathing seems unnatural sometimes and a flat stomach is considered attractive, so women and men tend to hold in their stomach muscles. This interferes with deep breathing and gradually makes shallow "chest breathing" seem normal, which increases tension and anxiety. The American Institute of Stress says that "... Deep breathing increases the supply of oxygen to the brain and stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes a state of calm ... " Different breathing techniques help you feel connected to your body and Keep your awareness away from the worries in your head and reassure your mind. These techniques can relax you so much that they can make you very sleepy, especially if it is close to bedtime. You can get better benefits if you practice when you are fully awake and alert. Try not to practice after eating a heavy meal.

CLEAN THE BREATHING CHANNELS

Take a comfortable sitting position, making sure your spine is straight and your heart is open. Relax your left palm comfortably into your lap and bring your right hand just in front of your face. With your right hand, bring your pointer finger and middle finger to rest between your eyebrows, lightly using them as an anchor. The fingers we’ll be actively using are the thumb and ring finger. Close your eyes and take a deep breath in and out through your nose. Close your right nostril with your right thumb. Inhale through the left nostril slowly and steadily. Close the left nostril with your ring finger so both nostrils are held closed; retain your breath at the top of the inhale for a brief pause. Open your right nostril and release the breath slowly through the right side; pause briefly at the bottom of the exhale. Inhale through the right side slowly. Hold both nostrils closed (with ring finger and thumb). Open your left nostril and release the breath slowly through the left side. Pause briefly at the bottom. Repeat 5-10 cycles, allowing your mind to follow yours inhales and exhales.

“Healthy Mindset for the Holidays BY MONICA LOPERA NASSAR

The holidays bring so much love, joy, laughter and…slight madness. It can be challenging to stay in the spirit when we are feeling out of balance and out of alignment. Here's where a healthy mindset can be the biggest gift to yourself this season! We hear a lot about mindset, but what does it really mean? Put simply, our mindset is made up of our habits. Our habits can vary from healthy eating to watching TV to daily physical practice and so on. So if you are looking to remain cool, calm and collected during the chaos of shopping, gift wrapping, school break and family reunions… keep reading as I will give you all you need to make this your best season yet! We often forget to make time for ourselves, to do things that bring us pure happiness, such as visiting a favorite floral shop, making time to sip coffee at your favorite cafe or taking a walk to absorb nature and all of its wonder. So take the time NOW, and create 15-30 minute daily appointments to allow for your favorite act of joy. This is one of my favorite ingredients to maintaining a healthy mindset! Scheduling daily "moments of joy" may sound daunting given our time is so limited with ALL THE THINGS but this is why it is VITAL to our sanity.

The next component to a healthy mindset is to understand the difference between choice and reaction. Many of us allow our circumstance to drive our emotions and choices. Now this is easier said than done during this time of year, but remind yourself that you are always in control. YOU CAN change and choose a different interpretation of a circumstance. Simply put, choose to be happy! When you feel triggered, ask yourself why? Why is this really bothering me? Do you feel off balance and in need of more self care time in your day? Recognizing the source of “the why” will help you to see things differently and create better self care habits throughout the day to help you regain your center. One last thing to consider when aiming to achieve a healthy mindset is to remember that we are energetic beings. Do you ever wonder why there are certain people in your life who seem to be magnetic? This is simple, the energy we possess and radiate is the type of energy we attract or repel. What a great reminder to present our best self so we can attract that in return. When we show up in our lives happy, calm and at peace, people will reflect this back onto us. And best of all, if you have little ones, this is especially true for them as they are our "little mirrors” and will reflect the behaviors we model back to them! If there is a certain mantra or quote that can serve as a gentle reminder, make it your phone screensaver. Here are a few of my favorites: - Choose Happiness every day. - Reflect what you want to see in the world. - I am grateful. I am kind. I am at peace. Smile, Life is supposed to be fun!
