What are your leaves telling you? Before adding any additional nutrients ensure the deficiency isn’t caused by environmental issues such as pH, which should ideally be between 5.8 – 6.2. If your pH is outside of this range adding extra nutrients will not fix deficiency and could do further damage.

All about lighting Lighting set-up – the stuff you need to know You already know that plants need light, but a hydroponic grow lighting set-up is more complex than just sticking a light over your plants. Here’s what you need to know…

The Equipment You can choose a complete lighting fixture which includes all of the below or you can pick your own set-up. Whichever option you choose here’s what a lighting set-up consists of: 1. Lamp – either CFL or HID

2. Ballast – to control the energy needed to power the light if using HID lamps

3. Reflector – to guide the light produced down to your plants

4. Contactor with timer – to protect against power surges and to time the light on/off periods (if using CFL, just a timer is fine)

Lamps

Ballasts

For larger, energy-hungry flowering plants choose HID lights. For smaller plants, seedlings, or clones choose CFL lights and for propagation and supplementary lighting, choose LEDs.

If you’re using an HID light you need a ballast. Basically the light won't start without one! The ballast provides the ramped up voltage to power the light up and keeps the light running. Without a ballast to limit its current, an HID lamp would rapidly increase its current draw. How to use a ballast

CFL Lamps

CFL lamps are great for beginners, propagation and smaller vegetative plants. They are efficient and emit very little heat. This means you won’t need much ventilation to keep the room cool. On the downside they aren’t very bright so you’ll need several lights side by side, and you’ll need to place them close to the top of the plants (10-15 cm) to provide sufficient light for photosynthesis. You won’t need a ballast or contactor but you will need a reflector and a timer.

Hang your reflector and connect your lamp into the reflector socket. Plug the reflector lead into the socket on the ballast. Connect the power lead of the ballast into the ballast and the 3-pin plug into your contactor socket. We recommend the Gavita DigiStar Digital Ballast

Why we recommend digital ballasts Digital Ballasts are superior to magnetic ballasts. They are:

High Intensity Discharge (HID)

Most indoor growers choose HID lights. They produce a very powerful glow which produces photosynthesis. You can choose a Dual Spectrum light or switch between the blue spectrum MH lights for the vegetative stage and the HPS lights for flowering and fruiting. Because HID lights are very powerful, ventilation must be used with HID lighting in order to remove excess heat. You will need a ballast, reflector and contactor with timer.

• Silent • Produce a greater lumen output • Lose less power between the ballast and lamp • Remain in full working order for much longer than magnetic ballasts.

Reflectors maximize the amount of light reaching your plants instead of shining onto the walls and ceilings.

If you’re using an HID light you’ll also need to plug the ballast into a contactor with a timer to switch your lighting on and off at the correct times and to prevent power surges from blowing your lights. You can manage several lights from one Contactor.

If you choose a complete lighting fixture it will include a Reflector, otherwise we recommend Adjust-A-Wings Reflectors and Gavita Reflectors. Choosing a Reflector what to consider Investing a little more in a Reflector can make all the difference to your grow. Here’s what to consider… • Reflection rate – what % of light does the reflector promise to reflect and is this backed up by the design and material of the reflector? Also check whether the reflector has an expected lifespan over which it will maintain its reflection rates. • Adjustability – Can you adjust the reflector wings inwards and outwards to change the light footprint and intensity to suit your space and grow stage? • Open ‘v’ Closed ended – If you’re growing in a smaller space, a space that gets hot or are using expensive bulbs you should opt for open ended reflectors which keep the bulb cooler than closed ended designs.

We recommend Green Power contactors which are made in Britain. If you’re using Gavita DigiStar Ballasts you can choose a Gavita Master Controller instead of a standard Contactor. The Master Controller has lots of great features and can control 80 ballasts!

Ultimate Protection Green Power Contactors are the safer way to control light and fan ‘on’ and ‘off’ periods. Grow Room Ventilation Ventilation is the process of removing hot, humid, CO2 depleted air and replacing it with fresh, CO2 rich air. Odours are also removed in the process. If you don’t ventilate your indoor grow area the hot humid air will result in slow growth and mould and the lack of CO2 will prevent photosynthesis.

EQUIPMENT YOU WILL NEED: • Extractor Fan – pulls the air outside • Carbon Filter – removes particles from the air you are sending outside, so that the air is odour free when it gets outside

• Ducting – connects to the filter • Intake Fan (if needed) – pulls fresh air in • Fan controller – speed fans up if room becomes too hot

WE RECOMMEND RHINO VENTILATION PRODUCTS TIP 1

Fit your extractor fan at the top of your growing area, towards the back of your grow room, on the opposite side of your tent to your intake fan or vent.

TIP 2

Always extract more air than you draw in – otherwise your room or tent will become too full of air and air will seep out before odours have been removed. To extract more than you pull in use an intake fan that's 20% less powerful than your extractor fan. Or run a similar fan at 20% speed.
